The local radio stations are already playing Christmas music and everyone is already talking about the “Christmas” season–but it’s not yet Christmas – this Sunday begins Advent, the season for preparing for Christmas.

So what is Advent and why is it important? Advent is a time to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. It has a quasi-penitential theme, and this can be a strong antidote against the consumerism of our nation and time.

I was recently wondering about the origins of Advent and its history. So I did a little research and came up with the Top Ten Things You Need to Know about Advent:

Rejection is something we deal with everyday. Even the people whom we probably think have never been rejected have their own stories to tell. It’s almost annoying when you hear really good-looking celebrities saying how ugly they feel. You almost want to say, “kung kayo pangit, paano na kami?” Hehe…but there’s nothing like rejection to make you feel ugly and unappealing.

I know that most of these picks are fanboy picks, but that’s just the way it goes. I’m a fanboy. Sure I don’t have critically acclaimed films making up my list, but I don’t care. These are the movies I liked the best from the last ten years.

10. Minority Report (2002)

Spielberg really outdid himself with this modern sci-fi classic about a crime unit which uses seers to stop murders before they happen. This is a wonderfully crafted film with some very interesting ideas inside a great chase movie.

9. The Dark Knight (2008)

I know that I see like a fanboy for including this on my list, but my higher choices will make me seem like more of a fanboy, so I’m not bothered by this. Batman Begins was the Batman movie I have always waited for, and The Dark Knight took it up a notch, creating a great atmosphere and wonderful performances along the board.

8. Wall*E (2008)

WallE may be my all-time favourite animated film. I was blown away when I saw this movie. I did not expect to fall in love with these characters and become so engrossed in the story and moral background. But I did. WallE is amazing, through and through.

7. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

Martial arts films have never reached this level of artistic and literary brilliance. This film transcended genres and languages and became one of the most emotionally gripping films of the last ten years. The cinematography was absolutely beautiful, the story was enrapturing, and the over-all style was just incredible.

6. Children of Men (2006)

Its hard for me to pinpoint what I love about this movie so much. It might be the unyielding vision of the director, the fascinating psychological ideas and questions which arise from this situation, or the intensity of the action throughout. What a brilliant film.

5. The Passion of The Christ (2004)

Mel Gibson set out to make a massive, gripping, emotional religious epic, and he succeeded in every way. The Passion tells the story of Jesus’ last day without holding anything back, bringing the full weight of his suffering and sacrifice to the screen.

4. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is a major milestone in movie history. The Tow Towers, as the middle piece, suffers from certain downfalls that the middle has, yet still succeeds on a very epic and visual level. The Battle of Helm’s Deep is one of the great battle scenes, which the ongoing struggles of the fellowship held us to our seats.

3. Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith (2005)

I just can’t justify not having a Star Wars movie on this list. I am too big of a fan for that. Sure I had my problems with the first two prequels, however the third gave me exactly what I hoped for from the final installment of the Star Wars Saga. I was moved visually, cinematically, and emotionally.

2. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

The final piece int he Lord of the Rings trilogy saw all of the story lines come together for one great climax. Sure there were parts which bothered me as an avid fan of the books, but the massive scope of the picture and the hard-hitting emotional punches left me awed.

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

The Lord of the Rings trilogy came onto the screen late 2001 and conquered the movie-going world. The epic scope and huge vision for these films was apparent to all who saw it. The quality of production was at the highest levels that film can reach, and Tolkien’s story and characters entranced audiences everywhere. Fellowship of the Ring is the best of the trilogy and set a new standard for movie-making which in my opinion has yet to be surpassed since its release.

I thought I’d make a Top 20 of what I’m thankful for because being away from everything you know and everything you are accustom to, makes you think about what you are thankful for, the people and things you miss, and your true priorities in life. Of course, I am thankful for God because honestly, despite some things, I am extremely grateful for where I am at right now in my life; ultimately, he has led me up this point in my life, through a series of very interesting and (at the moment) unlikely events.

So, here is a list of things that I am truly grateful for at the moment (in no particular order):

Notre Dame family

New friends, ie, Herlinda, mi compinche

My time in Chile

The noughties has been a decade of many things, but for Fingertips’ Ian Shine it has predomina

The noughties has been a decade of many things, but for Fingertips’ Ian Shine it has predominantly been a decade of lists, lists and more lists…

As the noughties draw to a close, people inevitably try to wrap up the decade in a convenient package, slap a label on it and sell it off as a profitable Christmas book that no one will read.

Summarising 3653 days of news, culture and everything else in processed chunks of bland generalisations is a prospect that many people, mostly journalists, find irresistible.

They make such generalisations at the end of every year, but with the closing of a decade they think have a licence to freak out.

There are endless Top Tens and Top 100s all over the internet and in newspapers that no one in their right mind would either read or pay any serious attention to.

Just do a Google search for “noughties” and any other word, and you will be met with a list of some kind about the decade that almost was.

Even “noughties crap” brings up the highly enlightening Sexiest Women of the Noughties (So Far) on Hecklerspray, with its title which implies a woman may still be born this decade who could oust Jessica Alba from her top spot, despite being only one month old.

Hecklerspray’s list does have some hint of originality about it however, as it contains only 24 entries, rather than a round number.

The Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph and the rest would never dare produce a list that wasn’t made up of ten, 50, or 100 entries, a fact which shows not only how eager they are to fill column inches with this easy-to-produce nonsense, but how generic they are.

It’s not as if there aren’t already more than enough awards ceremonies every year that are desperate to tell us what is the best and what we should be spending our money on.

Take books for example. There are, to name but a few, The Man Booker Prize, The Costa Book Awards, The Guardian First Book Award, The Orwell Prize, and what must be the most eminent of the lot, The Galaxy British Book Awards.

The Times’ recent list, The 100 Best Books of the Decade, is little but an amalgam of the winners and shortlisted books from the last ten years of the aforementioned prizes, from 2008’s Booker winner, Aravind Adiga’s The White Tiger at number 80, to 2003’s Whitbread (now known as Costa) winner, Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, at 25.

What exactly constitutes being “the best” in the eyes of The Times is left open to conjecture. Is it breaking down narrative walls in fiction? Providing insights into unknown areas? Selling the most copies?

No one at The Times seems to know or care, but just to be safe they’ve thrown in some populist numbers – Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code at ten – some political stuff – Naomi Klein’s No Logo at 50 and even some historical stuff – Peter Ackroyd’s London: the Biography at 45.

There really is something for everyone here, and that is why it is so dire. It’s nothing but bookcase facism that tells you what should be on your shelves for everyone to see next time you have a dinner party.

To make a generalisation of my own, if anything the noughties was the decade that spawned the culture of what could be called “Bestism”.

Reality TV gave us Big Brother, The X-Factor, I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and Strictly Come Dancing, all of which are based on the premise of finding out who is “the best” and dimissing everyone else.

The newspapers’ noughties lists are lodged deeply in this vein. What they are saying is that if you don’t own or aren’t familiar with the contents, you’re not suitable to mix it with the rest of us and should be voted off the social, intellectual and hipness circuits.

Or to turn out a phrase that somewhat epitomises noughties exclusionism, “you are the weakest link, goodbye.”

Injuries are a common thing in sports; it’s something that is a concern to every athlete. You have athletes missing games due to torn ACLs, lower body injuries, upper body injuries, cases of the flu and mild body strains to name a few. Then there are some more interesting injuries. Take for example Ottawa Senators’ goalie Pascal Leclaire; he was sitting on the bench during Monday night’s game when the puck was cleared into the Sens’ bench and hit Leclaire in the face. He will be out of action for 4 weeks with a fractured cheekbone, what a shame. With that being said, let’s look back at some of the most bizarre sports injuries that we as fans have been privy to make fun of:

10. Derrick Rose- The Apple Knife

“It was a silly incident,” Rose said. “I was cutting up some food and I laid on a knife getting lazy in bed. I went to go get a bottle of water, came back, forgot the knife was there, then sat down and sliced my arm.”

9. Rickey Henderson -Frost Bite

When an athlete hurts a foot or hand they’ll occasionally use an ice pack. The one problem Rickey had is that he slept with it on his foot and woke up hours later to realize he had frost bite. Oh Rickey!

Rickey Henderson..with a warm foot

8. Plaxico Burris- Shooting One’s Self

We all know the story. Football star. Gun. Bad ending. Plaxico was in a nightclub with a handgun in his pocket. Something happens (we’ll never know the truth) but it’s revealed he shot himself in the leg and due to having an illegal weapon he’s suspended by the league and could face time in jail. Did nobody inform Plaxico of what a holster was?

7. Joel Zumaya- Guitar Hero

The Tigers were entrenched in the 2006 ALCS when relief pitcher Joel Zumaya had to sit a few games due to the inflammation in his wrist and forearm…due to Guitar Hero. Is that what they’re calling it now?

6. Sammy Sosa- Sneezing

We’ve all sneezed. Some have been light sneezes and some have been so hard that they hurt. Well Sammy Sosa had a case of the bad sneezes and was forced to be out of the lineup due to back spasms.

Bless you Sammy

5. John Smoltz- Ironing

Atlanta Braves Pitcher John Smoltz missed a few games due to a burn he caused while ironing his shirt. John denies the report but it’s rumoured he was wearing the shirt in question while ironing it. Seriously what is wrong with athletes?

4. Joe Sakic- Snow Blower

Colorado Avalanche center and captain Joe Sakic was doing what every other Colorado resident does on their property. He was snow blowing. Hopefully the residents are a bit more cautious than Joe who ended up breaking three fingers and causing tendon damage due to his inability to control the snow blower.

3. Jimmie Johnson- Golf Cart

Jimmie Johnson had just won an unprecedented 4th straight NASCAR championship. At a golf tournament, Jimmie thought it would be fun to ride on top of the golf cart. Naturally, he fell off and broke his wrist. Stick to racing the automobiles Jimmie!

Jimmie Johnson inside the Golf Cart...where he should be!

2. Bill Gramatica- Field Goal

One thing the Gramatica brothers (Bill and Martin) and fellow NFL kickers do is over exagerate the celebrations. Bill Gramatica kicked a 46 yard field goal in the first half for the Arizona Cardinals in 2001 to give his team a 3-0 lead. Gramatica jumped up in celebration (like he just won a Super Bowl) and tore his ACL upon landing . He missed the rest of the season

10. The West Wing
“What Kind of Day Has It Been?”

The first season of the West Wing was a show full of spirit and good-hearted drama. Sure, it was somber at times and dealt withsome heavy themes, but it was also full of fast-paced energy and witty dialgue. Therefore, we were all surprised to see the season end in such a vilent and dramatic manner as a group of white supremecists opened fire on the president and his staff. We were left pondering all summer; who was hit? And who survived?

9. Friends
“The One With Ross’s Wedding”

The on-again, off-again love story between Ross and Rachel in the hit comedy Friends has become a legendary staple on network television. And just when audiences thought it way have died down and that the story arc may be over as Ross prepares to marry his new girlfriend Emily, they hit us with a bombshell: Ross says Rachel’s name instead of Emily’s during the wedding vows.

8. The Office
“Casino Night”

But enough about Ross and Rachel. They’re old news. Lets get on to the new wave of will-they wont-they TV couples, Jim and Pam. In the original British The Office, Tim and Dawn went striaght to the bitter end with their sexual tension. We assumed that the Jim-Pam relationship would be much the same, until Jim took matters into his own hands. He kissed Pam outside and expressed his true feelings, shocking viewers everywhere. But the real cliffhanger would come a few minutes later when he kissed her again…

7. 24
“Day 1: 11:00 pm – 12:00am”

When 24 aired in 2001, it was stretching the barriers of TV, and so the ending of their first season was no different. In the last few mintes of the last hour, Jack Bauer finds that his wife has been murdered. At this point, fans of the show knew that the producers of the show, from taht moment on, would not be afraid to take bold chances. What would happen with Jack now? How is his wife’s death going to change the fabric of the show?

This shocking conclusion is a cliffhanger for these reasons,, yet it is also, strangely, a resolution to the season as a whole.

6. Lost
“Through the Looking Glass”

Lost has always used flashbacks as a way to tell its character’s stories, and in their third season finale, Lost used this staple storytelling device to give us the show’s best cliffhanger. DUring the two-hour seaon finale we follow the cahracters’ exploits to get off the island, while following Jack’s flashbacks intercut throughout the show. It isn’t until the very end, when Kate appears in Jack’s flashback, that we realize thatwe were never watching a flashback, but that it was in fact a flash forward. Jack and Kate had made it off the island! But how? When? What about everyone else? This revelation shocked Lost viewers and gave them a plethora of questions to ponder over the summer months.

5. The Simpsons
“Who Shot Mr. Burns? Part 1″

No one is better at homaging and spoofing great movie and televison moments better than The Simpsons. And so who better to do a spoof of the infamous “Who Shot JR” moment? This time, Mr. Burns was the gunshot victim, and everyone in town was a suspect. The producers also played up the mystery by giving clues throughout the summer and having cans write in their thoughts on who was the guilty culprit. This was the only time in the SImpsons twenty year run that theyended their season on a cliffhanger, and it was a good one. (even though it just turned out to be Maggie, but oh well)

4. Star Trek: The Next Generation
“The Best of Both Worlds: Part 1″

Usually the best cliffhangers are the ones that hit us with something completely unexpected. Something like the main characters becoming one of the enemy. That is what happened at the end of TNG’s third season, where Picard is not only captured by the Borg, but is made to be one of them. And when Picard turns toward his former crew and says “I am Locutus of the Borg”, geeks everywhere were on the edge of their seats.

3. Alias
“The Telling”

Alias was a show which seemed to end every episode with a cliffhanger. Therefore, when it came time for their season finales, they had to find ways to step up their game and bring those cliffhangers to the next level. The first season finale was okay; she was captured by who turned out to be her mother after years of believing she was dead. But the second season finale was when the producers of Alias really outdid themselves.

After all o fthe events of the final episode transpired, Sydney found herself exhausted after a fight with the agent who was doubling as her best friend, passing out onto the floor. When she awoke, however, she was in an entirely different city; Hong Kong. It was only until after she contacted the CIA and Vaughn that she, and we the audience, discover that she has been missing for two years.

2. The Sopranos
“Made in America”

Here we have a unique sort of cliffhanger; a cliff hanger in the final episode of a TV shows run (a purposeful cliffhanger, as opposed to a show which just got canceled. David Chase ended the Sopranos’ 6 season run with a scene where Tony and his family meet for dinner. Against the backdrop of an old Journey tune, a shady figure comes out of the bathroom, looking ready to make a hit. And just when we think something is about to happen, the screen cuts to black.

Fans were split on what they thought of this ending; any were angry while others thought it was a brilliant and original way to end the series. We don’t know what happens at the end, and we are never going to find out. It is a cliffhanger without a resolution, and a stroke of genius.

1. Dallas
“A House Divided”

Its hard not to put this one at number 1. Back in the days of Dallas, a season finale was simply the last episode of the airing season. There was nothing really special about them. But suddenly Dallas comes along and has their main character shot in the closing moments of the season, making TV audiences everywhere wait a whole summer to learn who the culprit was. “Who shot JR?” became a cultural phenomenon in 1980 and it built the trend of television cliffhangers which TV audiences now enjoy almost every May.

Take risks. Nothing can substitute experience.” I absolutely agree. I love the Brazilians, the way they live, the way they celebrate, the passion, the enthusiasm, the smiles, the sensuality, the pride, the diversity, the culture, the history, the food, the view from your hotel room, the optimism against all odds, and most of all- the beauty. Have I mention the enthusiasm and passion? When the star of the latest blockbuster The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) Robert Pattinson was asked in Jimmy Kimmel Live! in LA “Where in the world are the craziest (passionate) fans you’ve ever met while promoting New Moon?” the 23 yr old actor replied without hesitation “Brazil!”, and I wouldn’t be surprised. Have I mentioned the enthusiasm and passion?

The largest country in South America, the 55 yr old Peruvian fashion/celebrity photographer Mario Testino’s favorite destination to shoot his photo books, the world’s fifth largest country by geographical area, the world’s eighth largest economy, the world’s fifth most populous country, and the world’s largest population of fashion models and supermodels working today. The sultry brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima said in an interview “If you look around Brazil you see pregnant women everywhere. Here you don’t see that as much. There the only thing they do is babies, babies, babies! Especially the poor families.” Yes, Brazil is the home to a diversity of culture and wildlife, the home of the supermodels, and the home of the most photogenic landscapes and getaways in the world, my friend Antonio Bezerra (the blogosphere have known as Didio), my favorite São Paulo-based photographer is sharing NAIVEBOY.COM readers a slice of how he view this exotic wonderland through his lens. The Top Ten Most Beautiful Brazilian Men and Ten Most Beautiful Brazilian Locations where he photographed them.

#10 My Chucks Those of you who know me know that I take pics of my feet. Where have my feet been to

#10 My Chucks

Those of you who know me know that I take pics of my feet. Where have my feet been today? And those adventures have been marvelous. For over two years my Chucks have been in so many pictures in so many places doing so many things. I look at my poor shoes – dirty (afraid to wash them as they may disintegrate in the dryer), the sides tearing away from the material, missing part of the stripes – and I think, you are my favoritest pair of shoes ever! They walked me to a shark tank, they walked me past a shrine of a Saint, they walked me across the Bk Bridge for the first time, they walked me through an Impact Zone…. Thank you Chucks for being there to share in the adventure of my life. (giggle)

#9 Windows and the Art of Imagination

I think I am, without a doubt, the most imaginative 41 year old you will ever meet. It gets away from me sometimes. I love to Imagine (almost as much as I love to Wish for things). When I am on the train and a wonderfully depressing song plays on my MP3, I imagine that I am an ice skater gliding around the rink, arms extended, jumps perfect. When walking somewhere with Amanda I will imagine that “if this were a scary movie, we would come back past this cliff to find those climbers dangling from their two carabineers” (sick, I know). I imagine Alex standing in front of a class of students, white shirt sleeves rolled up, explaining a complicated equation to a future scientist or musician. So why mention windows – because some of my best imagining has occurred while looking out a window – on a train, sitting at the house, in the car.

#8 Sharing

Some of the best things have happened in my life while sharing with someone else. How much brighter a day is when you can share it with someone you love. How much funnier is a silly thought if you share it with a friend. How much easier it is to bear the weight of life if shared with another set of shoulders. How much tastier is a new dish when you can discuss it over the table with someone who appreciates it as much as you. What fun is your life if it is not shared with others?

#7 Books/Movies/Music

I grouped these three together and sit here for a moment and sigh. What a boring life this would be without these three. And I know that pioneers and cavemen survived without them…. I think that our ability to continue learning way beyond the years of our youth is one of the greatest things in life and I think Books, Movies and Music helps us further our education whether we realize it or not. I tear through books trying to soak in the story like a sponge. They open my eyes to other ways of thought, other ways of life. Movies transport me to places I can only dream of visiting someday. They take us to different times that have long passed and which we will never be able experience first hand. Movies aid my #9 on this list. And then there is Music – I hate when people ask my favorite song. That is like asking me to pick my favorite child. Impossible. They are all so different and have brought different things to me at different times in my life. My life is richer because of these three. Oooohhhh – AC/DC is playing in my memory and I am dancing on a desk with Laura Elliott in Brockman Hall… yes, music makes the memories sweeter.

#6 Laughter

Rhonda told me recently if she had to choose one thing that she had to do for the rest of her life and could do nothing else, she would choose laughing. I pondered that a bit and thought that that would be an amazing life if all you did was laugh. Yesterday evening I sat on the phone with Erin while we played Lexulous (remotely yet together) and laughed as she belted out her favorite 80s tunes. What a great way to end a workday. But my favorite laughter is that of a child. This past Halloween hearing Bella laugh in my backseat reinforced that. Over my birthday weekend hearing Ethan, Mercedes, Austin and Own giggle as Chris chased them reinforced that. I can remember one time when Amanda and Alex were playing in the living room at our old house on Kelly Avenue. I was washing dishes, it was a warm day, the windows were open and whatever mischief they were into made them burst into a fit of giggles that tickled my ears and made me put down my chores and go join in on the fun. Some fifteen years later I was listening from my bedroom on Atlantic Avenue, Alex was home on break and the two of them were talking about something in the living room. They broke into laughter and my ears were just as happy. A child’s laugh, my child’s laugh…nothing is sweeter.

#5 Cell Phone Technology

Yeah, I know I bitch about having to hear Mr. I Cannot Wait Five Minutes Till I Get To The Office To Make This Call Guy. HOWEVER – cell phones, what wonderful things they can be if used properly. How many snapshots have I taken and sent with my phone (one in particular gives me giggles – trying to sneak a pic of some creeper staring at me on the train to send to Erin and Mel and not realizing the sound was NOT muted and as the camera sound echoed through our section of seats the guy looked me in the eye with a most perplexed look…ha! who is the creeper now?!?). So many great bits of news have I shared with family over the cell. So many times have I been relieved to receive information quickly from a text. So many smiles have I enjoyed from a simple text received. (the best text ever I have saved on my SIM card says – “I am on my way. I love U!” – Amanda was heading to prom). So, yeah – just for today I will be thankful for the cell phone technology – I still have some hours till my commute home to change my mind….lol

#4 New York

I moved to New York April 2002. I was supposed to move in September 2001 but we all know what happened then and for that reason my plans were put on hold. As I approach my eighth anniversary as a New Yorker I am thankful for all of the opportunities I have been afforded by living here. This phase of my life has been amazingly rich in experiences. The people I have met, the things I have seen, the food I have tasted – all because of NY. I do not know why but the image of “Lou Gossett Jr” in his mini skirt walking down the platform of the A Train as Melissa and I stared with mouths hanging open comes to mind. Oh, how many times have I said, “Only in NY”.

#3 Kisses

Who doesn’t like a great kiss? Sigh. Ok, well, there are other types of kisses too. Kissing the crown of a newborn’s head as the doctor tells you they are healthy. Kissing my Mommy hello when I see her after a long period of time. In New York, everyone kisses you whether you want it or not…THAT I had to get used to. But how about that “first kiss”? Watching him walk across the street to you, smiling, eyes twinkling… grabbing you up and kissing you and right then you realize that this kiss, this one right here, could possibly be the sweetest kiss you have ever tasted. Sigh. Yeah, he made me a girl.

#2 Snapshots/Stories/Memories

Yeah I love to take pictures and tell stories about my memories. I like to write my stories out so I can remember the details of them later. I have journals that can make me cry, laugh or be pissed just with the flip of a page. Documentation is elemental in my life. My greatest fear in life is the loss of my memories. So all these blogs, stories, pictures – they all are like my own little security blanket. I love to have an audience that is enjoying the story that I am telling, I am animated and boisterous. I love to make them laugh or be amazed right along with me. I love it when people enjoy the pictures I take. I am a ham. And you love it, you know you do….. lol

#1 Loved Ones

This encompasses all of you – my friends, my family, my kids, my Christopher. How sweet my life is because of all of you. How great it is that I can make this list and think of stories that involve at least one of you for each and every number on here. How blessed I am that we travel along the same path in life. How very thankful I am that you are in my life…

For these things I am Thankful on this Thanksgiving….now pass the damn turkey! Ha!

To take a break from all the torturous aspects of roof-filling builders, burning pains and no internet, here is a little list of what I deem the top ten best feelings/things in life. Do note I’m not going to include the obvious (so that’s sex, the lottery and asking someone out for the best feeling out of the question). I hope you enjoy what I’d call a unique list of best feelings in life:

Best feelings

10. Finishing homework

Its a puny little thing, but its a good one. One of the biggest banes of a teenager’s life is undoubtedly homework. Finishing homework gives you a little pat on the back, and even allows for a little gloating. “Have you finished your homework? Because I have. So yeaaah.

9. Finding a song you like on Youtube

When your ears have a first listen to the tune of your life, you feel like you’ve found a gem. You’ll listen to it once. Then twice. Then you’ll stuff it in your favourites, just so you can listen to it the next day after you come home from school/work. A great tune brings a great feeling.

8. Drinking something when you’re extremely thirsty/hot

Your throat is as dry as my sense of humour, your thoughts are plagued with thirst, and all you can speak is the words “drink, water, and possibly goose.” As soon as your lips touch that water you’ve been craving for, you feel like you’ve just fell into an ocean of your temporary favourite thing ever. Your body feels cool again, and everything goes calm. Simply bliss.

7. Catching up with a friend you haven’t spoken to ages

Catching up with someone you haven’t talked to in a while can be a massive relief; you feel like you’ve retrieved a lost connection. It’s rather satisfying to just sit on a computer, when suddenly an instant message from someone you haven’t talked to a while crops up.

6. Falling asleep after a hard day’s work

Need sleep? When your hands have worked so hard they’ve broken, and your mind is searing from all that effort you’ve had to put in today, the calm, welcoming feeling of a warm bed really does break the barrier. You’ll fall asleep instantly, and from there, it’s all simple bliss.

5. Having a shower in the morning

The positive feeling of warm water while you’re half-awake and cold is ridiculous. The feeling is so good its almost mind-numbing. Waking up cold, only to be relieved by a rain of warmness, is probably the most relaxing thing on this entire list. Trust me, there is little better then a refreshing shower in the morning; it definitely does set the standard for a good day.

4. Making a speech in front of a crowd of friends

Making a speech takes guts. Reading it all takes even more guts. But a speech can be incredibly heart-warming. Not only to you, but to everyone you read it to. Your friends will be rooting for you, and there’s nothing that can stop the fact that everyone’s eyes are on you. Unless your speech is boring, of course. That’s when you should scroll to the top ten worst things in life. But when you finish the speech, and you see all of your friends staring on proud, you almost feel the urge to smile for the rest of your life. And that is a golden feeling. A feeling that has allowed this to rank to #4.

3. Having a lucid dream

Literally the only way you can do everything you’ve ever imagined, lucid dreaming is perhaps the best way to live your wildest fantasies. Ever wanted to see a Pokemon? Ever felt like flying? In a lucid dream, you can do all of that. And much more. And the scene in a lucid dream can become almost as vivid as real life- its scary. But the best part of a lucid is the first part: knowing you can do anything. The freedom in a lucid dream is ridiculous- I can barely describe it in words. Freedom so powerful lucid dreaming has managed to rank 3rd in the top ten best things/feelings of life.

2. Finishing something you’ve worked on for years

Sure, it requires a ton of effort, but the satisfaction gained from finishing a project is bewildering. It does more then make up for the effort- it brings success. A project that you’ve given a fraction of life to complete is almost always guaranteed to be a great one, provided you know what you’re doing. However, it’s only worthwhile when you share it with your friends- your beam of glory will have finally lit up, and you’ll feel like life is complete. Then you’ll think its a dream, and when you realize its reality, oh yes.

1. Doing all the previous nine things in one day.

It is possible. Definitely possible. A lucid dream to start the day, and then a shower. After a shower, and a walk to work/school, you get a conversation going with a friend you haven’t talked to in a while. Lessons go past, and you manage to do your homework in the spare hours you have at school. When you go home, you have a party to host to celebrate your biggest project achievement, with a speech all ready. But before you go there, you’ve got a few minutes or so on the internet. You find a good song, add it to your favourites, and then hop off to your location. You get there, make the speech, and there’s uproar in applause. Everyone celebrates your achievement, and you start to get a tad thirsty. After an hour of being thirsty, the water comes in, and you’re in heaven. By the time you go home, you’ve had a hard day’s work, and you fall to your bed happily.

Sure, its incredibly unlikely, but its not impossible. The feeling is so elusive that if you ever get it you’ll feel like the day’s been fixed. But hey, its more likely to happen then winning the lottery, so its much more viable.

And there we have it- the top ten feelings of life (in my opinion). I hope you enjoyed the list- I did… A bit.

Feel free to comment with your personal list, and feel free to share your experiences

November 23, 2009 by Ares-mma.com staff

With Thanksgiving upon us, there is a short lull in mixed martial arts action that gives the opportunity to visit the top 10 pound-for-pound list. Here’s how it breaks down from 10-6. . . .

10. Thiago “Pitbull” Alves

Before Thiago Alves got his title shot against Georges St-Pierre at UFC 100, he was coming off 7 consecutive victories – his last three over contenders Karo Parisyan, Matt Hughes, and Josh Koscheck. Alves is one of the biggest and strongest welterweights in the division. He is known primarily as a striker, and his ground game was considered a weakness before he demonstrated outstanding takedown defense against both Hughes and Koscheck, both former Division I All-American wrestlers. At UFC 100, Alves was able to compete with St-Pierre for all 5 rounds before losing a unanimous decision. Alves has a loss to Jon Fitch, who did not make the cut, but that loss came over 3 years ago, and Alves has improved his game at a faster pace than Fitch since then. Thiago Alves is the #10 mixed martial artist in the world pound-for-pound.

9. Nick Diaz

Nick Diaz might be the most technically sound fighter in mixed martial arts. Diaz has won his last five fights impressively – stopping all 5 opponents. Diaz is a Gracie jiu-jitsu black belt, under Cesar Gracie, and Nick Diaz has outstanding boxing skills; he has been training under former world boxing champion Luisito Espinosa. Diaz has been competing outside of the UFC since November of 2006. There seems to be a personal conflict between Diaz and those in power in the UFC, but in time, maybe MMA fans will get to see a matchup between UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz. Nick Diaz is the #9 mixed martial artist in the world pound-for-pound.

8. Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (UFC Light Heavyweight Champion)

Lyoto Machida is the reigning UFC light heavyweight champion and would be higher on the list, but in the fight business you are only as good as your last fight. Machida was given the decision against Shogun in his last fight, but Shogun controlled that fight. Before his fight with Shogun though, Lyoto Machida was undefeated (15-0) with quality wins over Thiago Silva and Rashad Evans in his previous two fights. Machida’s karate style seemed to be a puzzle that could not be solved. Every fighter who came against Machida was walking directly into a buzz saw. With a convincing win over Shogun in their rematch in May of 2010, Machida could leap directly back into the top 5. Lyoto Machida is the #8 mixed martial artist in the world pound-for-pound.

7. Brian Bowles (WEC Bantamweight Champion)

Brian Bowles is the reigning WEC Bantamweight Champion. Bowles is undefeated (8-0), and his last win came against Miguel Torres at WEC 42. Bowles stopped Torres, and took his title, with a first round knockout. Although Bowles is only 8 fights into his professional mixed martial arts career, the first round knockout of Miguel Torres propels him onto this list. He is the undefeated WEC Bantamweight Champion, and until someone proves otherwise, Bowles is the #7 mixed martial artist in the world pound-for-pound.

6. Brock Lesnar (UFC Heavyweight Champion)

Mixed martial arts had never before seen anyone like Brock Lesnar. He is an athletic 6′3” and 280 lbs (has to sweat down to make the UFC’s 265 lb heavyweight limit). Lesnar was the 2000 NCAA Division I National Champion in wrestling, and those skills have begun to translate to mixed martial arts in a way that has have become scary to the rest of the UFC’s heavyweight division. Lesnar’s dominating performance at UFC 100 over Frank Mir has quickly become a thing of legend. Frank Mir is a big, strong heavyweight, who is skillful on the ground, and Lesnar was able to take him down and force him into a completely helpless position before landing devastating punches over and over again. Lesnar currently has a serious illness that has rendered him unable to defend his UFC heavyweight title. Until there is an official announcement that Lesnar will no longer be able to compete, he will remain on this list. Brock Lesnar is the #6 mixed martial artist in the world pound-for-pound.

I first read this article on one of my favorite homeschool blogs on WordPress, Spotty Banana Homeschool. This article encompasses some of the main reasons why I homeschool, also. (Note: #8 does not apply to our family; however, I respect that reason just the same.) Please enjoy…

Top 10 Reasons to Homeschool

As I approach this topic, I realize how ridiculous it is to assume that I can write about “THE” Top 10 reasons to homeschool. One of the main reasons to homeschool your children is that you can be at the helm. You can do it for whatever reason you want in whatever way you want, so for me to assume that I could come up with the definitive top ten reasons seems kind of silly. My top 10 reasons are top ten for me. There are many homeschooling families I know whose reasons are vastly different from mine. There are, undoubtedly, similar veins and similar convictions behind the reasons that people choose to homeschool but if you took a moment to do the math on all the different reasons, it could get quite staggering. Though there is no way to know the number of homeschoolers (even in the U.S. alone), we can safely assume that there are hundreds of thousands of great reasons to homeschool even if we all only have one thing in common on our top 10 list.

In order to lend a voice other than my own to the subject at hand, I decided to gather a bit of information from other sources. During a recent field trip, I did an informal survey of some of my fellow homeschooling mothers (on a pontoon boat of all places — we were on a nature cruise, of course!) and I asked them why it was that they had decided to homeschool. Some of their answers were funny. Some were sober. The common thread however was that all of them were passionate about why they were walking this road. We talked at length but here are ten of the reasons that stuck with me from our conversation:

“I want to be the one who sees the “aha” moments in my children. I don’t want to have to hear about what they learned in school that day (if they even remember to tell me). I want to be a part of that, witness and encourage it. I can’t outsource those moments. I’m selfish like that.”

“I didn’t want my kid standing in line all day! We went and visited several schools before we made the decision to homeschool and I noticed something that all of them had in common. Everywhere I went, I saw endless lines of kids! They were waiting in line for their teacher to pick them up from one class and go to another. They were waiting in line to eat lunch. They were waiting in line to go to the bathroom. I started to wonder, ‘How much time a day did they spend standing in lines?’ I also heard the hauntingly familiar ‘We’re not going anywhere until everyone is in line quiet and is standing still!’ and I was instantly taken back to my own school experience. Standing in line was one of my least favorite things to do when I was in school, I didn’t want my kid having to do that all day!

“I’ve been in the teaching world. I know how the school system works. I know how it takes an act of congress to get curriculum changed if something’s not working. I wanted have the authority to say, ‘You know what, this is not working for you, is it? Let’s do something different’ and not have to wait until failure upon failure revealed that this was not the route to go. If we see that something is not speaking to our homeschooled children, we have the freedom to go another route. I think that’s huge.”

“If anyone’s going to be indoctrinating my children, it’s gonna be ME.”

“I want my children to grow up together. I want to provide an environment in which our family was not separated for the majority of the day, 5 days a week, 9 months out of the year. Homeschooling allows my children to grow up together. That’s important to us.”

“I want to be the one to answer my child’s questions about life and about the world. I want to know their thoughts, their worries, their big ideas. My children are my greatest treasure and I want to cherish the time I have with them.”

“I want to know what my children are being taught and the perspective from which they are being taught and I don’t want to feel like I have to go and un-do things that they’ve learned. Children spend 14,000 seat hours in schools. FOURTEEN THOUSAND. How on earth could I really be involved and aware of what’s being poured into their hearts and minds when they’re gone from me and under the influence of hundreds (even thousands) of others? It’s implausible to think that even if I were the president of the PTA or room mother of the year that I would be as involved as I want to be so instead, I teach them at home.”

“I am an adoptive parent. We went halfway around the world to get these children home. Something about sending them away for the majority of their childhood just didn’t seem right.”

“The school systems here are not to our satisfaction and private school is not economically feasible for our family.”

“What if you were looking at a brochure for a school that claimed it offered: ‘Class ratios as low as 1:1, individualized education plans tailored to the strengths, needs and preferences of each child in the program. Weekly field trips to nature centers, state parks, art museums, historical sites. Classroom instruction that is in line with your family’s world view and core values. A flexible schedule that allows for family cohesiveness.’ Would you jump at the chance to put your children there? I know I would and that’s exactly what we did. Homeschooling lives up to all of those claims.”

So there you have it. Not necessarily “THE TOP TEN”, but very wonderful reasons nonetheless. Are you thinking of homeschooling? What are YOUR reasons?

I’ve always heard people say things like: “Why don’t they cast real people in movi

I’ve always heard people say things like: “Why don’t they cast real people in movies?” or “That model’s not real!” or “Wow, I was surprised to meet (insert celebrity name here) and learn that (insert proper celebrity gender pronoun here) was a real person, just like me!”

And I’ve always thought, “Uh, yeah, they’re real people who just happen to be more attractive and talented than you. What, do you think Hollywood makes these people?”

But lately, I’ve thought, “Hey, what if Hollywood does make these people?”

So I’ve compiled a list of 10 celebrities who are probably not androids, but totally could be maybe.

1. Angelina Jolie.

It's the lips. I swear to God, those lips are unnatural.

Why she could be an android: Seriously, the woman looks like she was created in a lab. Full, pouting lips. Luxurious hair. Other womanly parts. All slightly off. Like the scientists were like, “here’s all the ingredients for sexy!”, put them together and were like, “errrrr….”

Why she’s actually not an android: Man, I don’t care how mad those scientists are, nobody’s going to make an android that makes out with its brother. That’s breaking all sorts of Asimov’s rules of robotics (or whatever).

2. Tom Cruise.

Why he could be an android: Seriously, do you think that Tom Cruise is a real, actual human? Really?

Why he’s actually not an android: If Hollywood could make movie stars, they wouldn’t make them shorter than their wives.

Sooooo much shorter than his wife.

3. Veronica Mars, aka Kristen Bell.

Why she could be an android: Because Veronica Mars, aka Kristen Bell, is the perfect nerd fantasy. She’s snarky but sweet. She’s beautiful but a bit of a geek. She has the voiceover prowess of a god! This girl was clearly made in the dungeon lab (read as: parents’ basement) of a supra-nerd.

And when I'm done with the modifications, she will cosplay with me!

Why she’s actually not an android: Yeah, right, do you think Mr. Supra-nerd would have let his creation out into the public once he was finished?

"Franky, honey, whatcha doin' down there?" "Nothing, Ma!"

4. Takeshi Kaneshiro.

Why he could be an android: He speaks four languages … fluently. He is an actor and a model. He does a great action scene and a pretty good romance scene. Obviously, these traits were programmed into him.

Why he’s actually not an android: Because only the hand of the Almighty could create something that beautiful. (Man’s prettier than a sunset, is what I’m saying.)

Dear God, thank you for giving us this man and also the idea to cream butter with sugar. Both are delicious.

5. Miley Cyrus.

Why she could be an android: You know that Disney’s got a tween-star production line, churning out that perfect combination of sexy milquetoast that the kids love and the parents feel a little bit wrong about.

Why she’s actually not an android: I’m not sure she’s not.

But not the cool kind of android. The DISNEY kind of android.

6. Zac Efron.

Why he could be an android: Another perfect example of the Disney production line, hard at work. The floppy (but not too floppy) hair! The blue (but not too blue) eyes! The pouty (but not too … OK, you get it, fine) lips! Etc.! Etc. to the nth degree!

Short but not too ... wait, never mind.

Why he’s actually not an android: If Disney had made this boy, they would have implanted a Disney loyalty chip, and if he tried to expand his acting horizons, he would destruct like a Mission Impossible message.

Android Zac Efron! Noooooo!

7. Kate Hudson.

Why she could be an android: Because if she wasn’t an android, wouldn’t she be funny in rom-coms, like her mom Goldie Hawn? “Funny” is genetic, right?

Why she’s actually not an android: Probably Hollywood would have programmed her to be funny in rom-coms.

Your mom is really funny. What the hell happened to you?

8. Robin Williams.

Why he could be an android: One of Hollywood’s early attempts at the perfect acting unit, he was programmed to start out edgy and gradually fall into a dark hole of suckitude.

Why he’s actually not an android: I think I’ve seen him bleed before. But that could’ve been oil.

Fiction or SECRET BIOGRAPHY???

9. Megan Fox.

Why she could be an android: Often called “the poor man’s Angelina Jolie,” Fox got her start “acting” with a bunch of giant robots. Unfortunately, that only emphasized how much she had in common with them.

Shown here: Megan Fox, displaying her "talents."

Why she’s actually not an android: Because if Michael Bay was going to make the perfect movie girl, he wouldn’t have made her be such an asshole.

10. Keanu Reeves.

Why he could be an android: The woodenness. The dead eyes. The gaping-mouthed stare. Nothing about this man says “human.”

I was really shocked to find this photo of Reeves, where he has what could be mistaken for "a different expression" on his face.

Why he’s actually not an android: Because he is just not cool enough to be an android, that’s why. Yes, my logic here is that I hate Keanu Reeves but I love androids, so clearly he is not an android. And you know what? My logic stands. Go to hell, non-android Keanu Reeves.
