It not only is an amazing way to reach many families, but it can be an amazing way to generate a substantial income

Tips for School Portrait Photographers

1.       Be Organized

If you are doing this for the first time, make sure you plan and check everything before you go in action. Use a calendar to design your work schedule. Since you will be interacting with a lot of parents, teachers and students, there are chances of lot of confusions. Be sure to prepare a work flow of which you will intimidate all the parties before you work. You can conduct an informal meeting where you discuss your entire plan and service to avoid any confusion.

 2.       Do not OVERBOOK

It may be very tempting to add on more schools to your client list. But this will lead to nothing but trouble. School photography is a time consuming process and you need to give the school 110%.

 3.       Pricing

Pricing is a very sensitive topic and you do not want to lose out on business due to lack of communication. Make sure you tell your clients that this is a special project that you are taking and required special investment of your time, money and resources.

 4.       Each Child Differently

Make sure to do something creative in the photoshoot of every child that you shoot. This will ensure complete dedication from both the parties. Even parents will not mind shelling out extra to get a one of a kind portrait of their child.

 5.       Make a Story

Get them to giggle, dance and move around. Parents will purchase more when you have a sequence of shots that show their children having an awesome time.  It creates higher sales and makes people talk about you! That is the goal: make some money and get your name out there!

 6.       Friend, not a Hindrance

Obviously you will be working within the school premises a lot, so make sure to maintain good relations with the staff, parents and children. They are the ones who will provide you with something that you need as well as give you company between shoots.

 7.       Be sure to come back next year

There is nothing better than assurance that you will be returning the next year too to have a photo session. You want families to feel a sense of gratitude that you came to their school. You want them to be excited each year that you are coming back. When I say different, think of all the things that the typical school portrait photographer is and do the opposite—use awesome backdrops, take many different shots from different angles, let parents view before they order, and offer a few products that school portrait photographers don’t offer… Keep it simple, yet different!

 8.       Manage the Quality

Keep the quality high, but not as high as your other portrait sessions. At the same time, do not do a poor job on the pictures either. You need to understand the essence of the shoot and bring the props accordingly. Instead of taking all your high end props that you use in your studio, take props that are fun, colorful and will allow the child to relate to. Make sure the props are cute and fun and chronicle the child’s age and personality.

 9.       Create your Magic

Be true to you! Do not conform to what you think families will want.  Be true to your style as a portrait photographer. If you like deep, rich tones and colors then make sure your school portraiture looks the same. If you like light, bright colors then do that same thing when photographing a school. You do not want a huge disconnect from what you do in a full session and what you do at schools. If people loved what you did at the school enough to call and hire you for a full session, they are going to expect close to the same style.

 10.   Retouch your Photos

Make sure to give your photographs to professional retouching agencies. By doing this, you will have time to take more pictures without worrying about retouching them. Also, giving it to experts ensures best quality.

 11.   Keep  the Contacts

Since you have worked so hard with them, make sure all your hard work does not go in vain. Add parents to your mailing list and makes sure to include a little thank you note with your contact details in the final pictures. Send them offers from time to time to keep the communication open.

There has been a big buzz in the Honda Ruckus community this past week about a new toy coming to join the ranks of the Ruckus. That toy is the Honda Grom. Known as the Honda MSX 125 elsewhere worldwide this bike is reminiscent of a smaller motorcycle.

The Grom packs a 125cc, 4 speed transmission with clutch, which is great for new riders and a fuel injected engine that pushes about 10hp.

Front and rear disc brakes on twelve inch wheels will help stop its weight of about 225lbs. The seat sits off the ground at about 30 inches and the rear sits on a single shock. The Grom will be available sometime in August in either your choice of red or black. Two videos are attached below for your viewing pleasure. One featuring stunt rider Nick Apex Brocha and one of an RPM dual exhaust. Yes, I smell plenty o’ mods a coming.

I might not be sewing this according to the directions but how I am sewing it makes sense  to me and all the steps will get done the right way even if it’s not in the correct order. I don’t know how many times I have modified the directions and done stuff in a different order or completely different way but still had my projects turn out.

I started by sewing the yoke piece to the bra front.

Then I sewed in the bra cups with a zig zag stitch. I bought the bra cups at a craft store, but did read (in a sewing forum) that you could also cut up old bras, or use pads from old swimsuits or ask at a fitting room counter for “spare bra cups” .(how much you pay will probably vary by store)

I probably should have switch to white thread, but it will be on the inside and no one will see it anyway. The placement does look a little off in the pictures but it is placed correctly.

Then I sewed the bra front to the bra back.

I forgot to buy the elastic for the step I was planning to do next. (the bra band) But I did try it on anyway. With the adjustments I made after making the tank top muslin with this pattern. The adjustments weren’t noticeable once it was sewn. (I took in the top of the front, back and bra pieces to better fit my bust) Best of all it fit perfectly!! Well, as perfect as it can fit at this point in the sewing process.

The Barely There case, also offers a soft microfibre material attached onto the inside of the shell to make sure that the case will not scratch your beloved HTC One’s full aluminium back. Alike the ‘Samsung Galaxy S4 Flip Cover’ the ‘Double Dip Flip Case’ offers protection for both sides of your device, with a hard plastic polycarbonate  shell attached to the rear of your device, which offers access to all of the ports necessary, and a soft, cushioned micro suede lining covers the screen, attached to the rear shell. However this case also boasts a few cool features, such as the ability to be propped up into a landscape viewing mode, for viewing movies or video calling. In conclusion I think that the HTC Double Dip Flip Case deservedly takes poll position in my top 5 HTC One cases, it makes sure no harm will get to your device with protection to the front, back, and side of your device, however also offering quick access to the device itself, and luckily for you the Flip Case is reasonably priced at only $22.99 / £17.99!

When people say GTA clone, it gets tired and old. Calling something a clone of something else makes you seem incredibly lazy as it’s merely a way of waving off any sort of merit the game might have otherwise that either sets it apart or makes it 10 times stronger than GTA3 (the one they’re usually referencing) and somehow allows them to dismiss the game entirely.

The sad fact is these same people would be missing out on otherwise incredible titles that, GTA or not, warrant your undivided attention. Titles such as…

#5 – Saints Row 2

Sometimes it’s all about out-GTAing GTA. That’s not to say Saints Row 2 isn’t its own thing, but it really is San Andreas on crack. So what makes SR2 worth playing and really sets it apart? Well, one thing is it’s absolutely hilarious. While San Andreas had its moments, SR2 never truly takes itself seriously and it really shows.

This was amidst all kinds of people turning their noses up to the SR series and trying to promote GTA4, which was little more than a date sim mixed with bad driving controls and shitty brawling…though I do have to admit the shooting was refined in a very big way. Most people never really hopped on this one because, well, “it’s just San Andreas.”

Except, see…I think San Andreas is the best thing GTA has ever done. SR2 brings so much to the table, though a lot of it is just a refinement of San Andreas. I can understand why people might be quick to dismiss this one as a result, but seriously, if you ever loved San Andreas for any reason, you should at least give it a look.

#4 – Sleeping Dogs

When Sleeping Dogs initially dropped, I didn’t know it was a part of the massively hyped (and consistently falling short) True Crime series. The shooting sections aren’t that great and the karaoke minigames are completely unnecessary…and the game doesn’t explain the control system very well…but virtually everything else is centered around being just plain goddamn fun.

There’s parkour, the brawling system is reminiscent of Arkham City, there are branching experience systems, all kinds of clothes to buy and wear (which give various bonuses), lots of great music that you literally won’t hear anywhere else (most of it’s Hong Kong inspired), an entirely new setting we just really don’t see in games (again, Hong Kong), airjacking, and all kinds of craziness.

Sure, there are a few things that hold this game back from being really great, but when it shines, it really takes center stage. Especially now that the game has gone down in price, there really isn’t any reason to NOT pick it up. If you liked any of the True Crime stuff or if you’re looking for something a little different and you like GTA, you won’t be disappointed.

#3 – Scarface

“So what if Tony Montana DIDN’T die?” This was the premise I constantly asked people before telling them about this game. In Scarface, you play as Tony Montana after his drug empire has been squashed and it plays under the premise that he survived the firefight at the end, laid low, got off the yeyo, and attempted to rebuild his empire with a little good old-fashioned revenge.

This game is absolutely crazy and while there are hints of it not taking itself seriously, it’s mostly a game about rage, selling drugs, and ultra violence. Of course, it’s also about what’s going on under the hood. You get to build up different aspects of your gang, reclaim and rebuild the mansion (and even customize it if you really want), earn respect, and even travel back and forth between Miami and the Caribbean.

At times it can almost feel like an RTS with resource management with all the extra stuff going on under the hood, but ultimately it reminds me most of SR2. It’s trying to outdo GTA without really trying to be GTA, which is one area that it sets itself apart from the SR series in general. Honestly, if you’ve ever wanted to go around fucking people up as Tony Montana (and really, who hasn’t), then you should check this one out.

#2 – Godfather

This is one of the earliest games I recall being shoddily dismissed as little more than a GTA clone. Granted, this was a review in a local newspaper (AKA no credibility whatsoever), but it infuriated me all the same. So Godfather is just GTA, but in the 30s? Are you fucking kidding me? For starters, it takes the movie, lets you play an active part in the chaos, invites you to 30s New York in a very stylish and accurate way, allows you to interact with the characters in the story…I mean damn.

The blackhand fighting system was awesome, the shooting was just right, and while I didn’t think the cars controlled as well as they could or that there was enough variety in cars, THAT was literally the only negative point I could come up with. It even had creative executions, shakedowns, and a backend RPG system that was really nice.

I don’t get where anyone gets off calling this a GTA clone, but there it is. You can carjack people and it’s open world. I guess that’s all it takes, right? This is one of the main reasons I think this mentality is absolutely retarded. That’s like saying if you can jump in the game, it’s clearly a Mario ripoff.

#1 – Saboteur

Saboteur is an absolutely amazing alternate history game that, yes, has been called a GTA clone. Set toward the start of WW2 when Germany was invading France (not sure if that’s accurate because I’m stupid with history, but this IS alternate history), you play as Sean, a hot-blooded Irishman who’s been caught up in the middle of it.

Yes, you can carjack. Yes, it’s open world. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, there’s this awesome effect that lets you know when an area is liberated: color. See, most areas are under nazi control and as a result, there’s this almost Sin City-like effect where it’s black and white with a heavy emphasis on red. However, in any area that’s been liberated, you see beautiful hues that make the colors of this simulated French countryside pop.

You get to blow all kinds of shit up, participate in interesting challenges that unlock all kinds of upgrades, use subterfuge, climb buildings…I mean, it’s ridiculous the amount of stuff you do in this game and I can honestly say it’s ALL done well. Sadly, the dev studio closed shortly after development of this game, so I don’t know if we’ll eve see another like it…but holy shit is this an amazing game.

Conclusion

GTA clone, Skyrim clone, Zelda clone…look, guys, it doesn’t matter. It’s one thing to say a game is LIKE another game. Hell, I do that all the time, especially when an entirely new and different game comes along that I struggle to explain. However, clones? Fuck that noise. Don’t let an otherwise brilliant game slip through your fingers just because you think it will be exactly like another game, one which you probably enjoyed in the first place.

The President could hardly have chosen a worse time.
