Love, Lust, Illusion….

Last Bullet?  This one is not a blank either.

The Toronto outfit is causing people to shoot out and purchase the latest record (EP) Love, Lust, Illusion.  Some say that the only thing wrong with this record is the fact that there are not enough songs.  They are really quite observant.  Five new guitar gripped, dangerously drummed pieces, with  the raw grit vocal of Bryan Fontez is a good amount, but two, or even three more would songs have been just right to complete the set.

A Canadian, even North American tour would be right just about now, as would a little more interest from the big guns.

Toronto is showing its greed by hanging on to this rebel rousing, hard-hitting, ballsy band.

The world deserves a shot at the Last Bullet and Last Bullet need to shoot for the world!

Hutz starts things off with “The Love I Was Waiting For,” an enlightening and side-splitting song about what concupiscence can do to one’s worldview. His delivery is clear, tragicomic, and Johnny Cash rich as he declares, “I found my Holy Grail, rubbernecking and chasing tail/ And there’re a few fine arts that I’m mastering/ Grab-assing and finger-blasting in the women’s bathroom.”

Then, a shift in diction. As if in response to Hutz’s libido-driven aspirations, Florendo takes the mic on the heart wrenching “What’s So God Damned Scary About Being Loved For The Rest Of Your Life,” a grungy look at losing his band-mate’s tardy ideal without expecting it.

The two vocalists operate on different wavelengths that intersect and maintain their essential features. Florendo’s verses, constrained by form, offer confessional narratives metaphorically bent, and his raspy tone has a tendency to transpose harmonies, tying them together much like a trombone in a brass band. Meanwhile, Hutz’s preference for explosive riffs and earnest aggression guards an emotional depth his intonations are quick to imply; it’s depth, or the feeling of being young and ahead on mistakes, that runs through Nouveau’s 10 song set.

On “The Archfiend’s Haven” (which opens like an R-rated version of The Lion King), Florendo is poised and contemplative. Over a pointillist battlefield dotted with drumsticks, he describes how “the illusion of endless joy” (as of today a pretty multifaceted commodity) is best applied to someone you can argue with. On “Sleep Is For The Weak,” Hutz argues with himself; whether he wins or not depends more on how he sounds than what he says.

Turning to clairvoyance for a moment, I foresee that some people might call the album disjointed and conclude that what we’re really listening to is a collaboration between two solo artists and a bad ass drummer. Maybe we are. The same people might raise a similar point about Lou Reed and Metallica’s recent effort, Lulu; and while Nouveau isn’t nearly as abstract, the avant-garde is definitely a core value by number of tackled genres alone: punk, pop, rock, grunge, country, indie and an acoustic ballad all find their places on the polycarbonate. Disjointed or not, the album’s alternating structure allows Florendo and Hutz (a great name for a cop drama) to 1) show off their personalities, and 2) embody Wilde’s gem of a notion that you have to be yourself, because everyone else is taken.

Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for…  Miss Holly (nee Anne Elizabeth) Woods and TORONTO!

Lemme tell ya, this chick could sing.  She’s got that kinda voice that makes you sit up and pay attention on hits like “Girls Night Out,” “Start Tellin’ the Truth” and the smash-hit single “Your Daddy Don’t Know (What Your Mama’s Gonna Do Tonight)” from 1982′s Get It on Credit.  But my personal favourite is a keyboard-driven out-of-love ballad called “Enough is Enough” off of their second album, Head On.  Besides the bitchin’ keyboard solo, this tune is most memorable for the venom in such lines as “A postcard will do/If you can spare the dime/Don’t call collect again/I’ll disconnect the line!”  Hear it for yourself…

In fact, I am currently trying to put my own spin on it for my (currently one-man) sludge metal 80′s pop cover band.  Not being able to sing like Holly Woods isn’t really the issue in this case, but reproducing those keyboard sounds has proven to be a challenge, especially since I don’t have a keyboard.  Still looking for other musicians, BTW…

Young Empires are a three piece that formed in October 2009 out of Toronto. They have already played alongside acts like Sleigh Bells & Wave Machines since. They have a sound that you may compare to the likes of Friendly Fires and Cut Copy, two very excellent bands.

-Tyler Armes, bass/keys for Down With Webster.

Down With Webster is a Toronto-based progressive/hip-hop/pop band.  The band consists of seven “musical friends” that came together in grade eight for a school assignment.  Even though they’re not all a part of the original seven, they have all been friends since middle school.

Since then, they have experienced many successes.  Superstar record producer Timbaland was quoted saying that DWW was “the illest group I’ve ever seen live in person, and you know I’m hard to please.  That group is the most amazing and creative, innovative group that’s going to come out in 2010.”

They attribute their gradual growth to determination.  “We’re relentless.”

So who makes up this unique group?

Bucky on vocals is usually the sweatiest of the bunch.  He radiates heart-pounding energy to the audience to make them jump up and rap along.

Cam’s laid-back rapping style confidently allows the spotlight to stray from him.

Marty will typically be found in boxer briefs, sneakers and knee-high socks, banging the drums and rockin’ a fro.

Kap is the little man with big hype.  Toting a backpack and megaphone, he pushes the excitement level of the crowd to the maximum.

Pat works the guitar and vocals.  Known lovingly as Riff-Raff, his messy hair, plaid shirts and smooth singing voice make him a deserving front man.

Tyler’s calm nature lets him multi-task on-stage.  He handles the bass and keys with brooding poise.

Diggy holds down the fort.  While the rest of the band dazzles the crowd with bustling vigor, Diggy deejays in the background.

With seven eclectic guys in a band, you’d think that it would be chaotic.  But the fact they have known each other for such a long time makes them capable of seeing everyone’s strengths and weaknesses.   Plus, they have one rule: No ego!

I didn’t only find myself getting their cd, but also hearing their songs over and over. The simple but catchy tunes are easy to love and the sounds of their guitars make me tap my feet incessantly. I must confess that I haven’t heard ALL of their music, but all of what I have heard is beautiful and highly commendable.
