Design

According to Jean Nouvel, the shape of the Torre Agbar was inspired by Montserrat, a mountain near Barcelona, and by the shape of a geyser rising into the air. Jean Nouvel, in an interview, described it as having a phallic character.[6][7] As a result of its unusual shape, the building is known by several nicknames, such as “el supositori” (the suppository), “l’obús” (the shell) and some more scatological ones.[6] It is also somewhat similar in shape to Sir Norman Foster’s 30 St. Mary Axe in London, often called “the Gherkin”. The Agbar Tower measures 144.4 m (473.75 ft) in height[8] and consists of 38 storeys, including four underground levels.

(I just moved into the new room and it seems to me like a good topic as an inaugurating post of my new day-to-day blog.)

The new room in the old dorm. I waited 4 years before it was my turn to get one of the rooms with this size/floor plan. (There are six in the dorm, and mine is on the 8th floor, or 6th in the local way of counting.)

From the entrance, the bathroom is on the right (left in the foto), followed by the kitchenette. What I am most glad about is the last window. I prefer my kitchen to have a lot of light. The blue drape is covering the shelf I store food stuffs. The shelf is quite an eyesore when looking from a bed, hence the drape (so that I won’t feel like I am sleeping in a kitchen.)

The sleeping quarter is much larger than the previous room. After 4 years of blue-dominated interior, I am in need of an anti-blue (red+pink).

The working quarter get a lot of light too with windows on both sides.

The window on the right overlooks the corner of the main BCN’s park, Parc Cuitadella. Too bad autumns here do not come with fireworks of red/yellow/orange folliage.

The large window mentioned earlier is my “breakfast area” where I sit eating cereals and having morning tea.

Though the view is nothing exciting. Jean Nouvel’s Agbar Tower can be seen not too far away. The building looks nicer at night.

2005 was declared the year of Physics by the UNESCP, the Microcredit Year by the European Union, the year of Eucharist by the Catholic Church and the Rooster’s Year of Chinese horoscope .

Not safe for work, in ieder geval.

E poi c’è quella forma, tanto criticata.

Ma a me piace».

                                                                                                                                          The Hills

                                                                                                                                        12-05-09.

U,

Greetings from India. Hope everything is going great in the land of Hercules and Hannibal. Yes, of course your regular updates on Facebook have kept us informed about your stay in Catalonia. Having said that, I would like to bring to your notice some important things that seem to be missing on your Facebook updates. But first, some news from the Hills.

These days, the Hills are blazing hot. No wonder, it doesn’t matter how much beer you gulp to appreciate the art of the Creator! On the other hand, I have to tell you that we have missed quite a lot of things earlier on in our lives. Despite our stay in the Hills for a long while, we have completely ignored a certain sizeable population which seem to be a breed apart. Our lives took a different turn the moment we decided that we have to go THE FARM. Afterall, despite all these years, I still feel alien here. The only saving grace is that I speak their language. But desperate situations demand desperate attempts. Although, I am far from being a celeb of the Hills, I am just a common man who has come to terms with something which he hadn’t noticed, but only had heard legends about it. It’s not a legend anymore, but a deeper sense of mysticism prevails. No matter, how hard you try, you can’t break into the cordon. You can’t break the code. The only wise thing to do is to be the New Guy! Crazy Eyes! (Just Kidding!)

Coming back to your updates on Facebook, I can empathize and sympathise with your situation of your office building!..:P. But that doesn’t give you an excuse to ignore the larger picture. You have less than a month to go, and all you can think of is Football, Grand Prix and Rock Concerts!!! Come On!!! I know that you don’t take much interest in arts and literature, but you have a brilliant opportunity to explore the country side of the land which inspired some of the greatest artists like Piccaso. ‘Am talking about the Bison on the Walls deep in the mountains near Santander. It’s just 7 hour drive from where you stay. Coming back to your own city, I am pretty sure, you haven’t visited all the major works of Gaudi! And for a moment stop using the camera!!..:P We know it takes some wonderful pics, but am sure the naked eye captures a more graphic representation of heavenly creations. You have to be full of stories of things you have seen, certainly you can’t carry your photo album/laptop everywhere you go to!

Oh, Yes! How can I forget this! A distant cousin of Salsa called Flamenco is very very popular there! We expect you to come back with some cool moves!..;). You have stopped telling me the news about “ics”!! Arrrgh! And DO something in the coming few days. Time is running out and then USandA beckons you! You are probably coming back to The Hills at the right time. There are so many movies in the next 2 months that you will have to watch atleast 2 per day to cover everything. Hope you make enough time sometime in July for a trip to the Orient! I wanna hear to all your stories and 2-3 hours @ The Hills is not gonna be enough.

Seeya Soon. Write to me sometime.

Hastala Vista,

Hemanth

P.S: By the way, did you look around the Sagrada Familia Church and Torre Agbar?!!

P.P.S: For more details, please refer to Wikipedia!..Hehehe…:)

Barcelona offers a full range of options for saying “out with the old and in with the new.” If you feel like an evening out of doors you have the area around the Torre Agbar. This bullet-shaped tower, the last word in architectural modernity, has aroused quite a polemic and inspired not a few jokes due to its form which to many is reminiscent of a giant…well check out the attached Youtube and judge for yourself. And on New Year´s Eve there is a full sound and light show.
La Plaza Catalunya and the area around the Cathedral are more traditional places to gather, sing, shout and eat the twelve “uvas de la suerte”. You traditionally gulp down one grape with each of the twelve bells of midnight. If you get all twelve down in the allotted time you will have good luck for all twelve months. Eleven grapes, eleven months, and so on. And all is washed down with copious quantities of cava (Spanish champagne). The atmosphere is very “animado”: warm, friendly, and a bit raucus. Or you can go to “El pueblo español”, an open-air space with reproductions of iconic Spanish buildings, restaurants, bars of all kinds, and a huge party in la Plaza Central.
For those who prefer a quiet dinner most of Barcelona´s best restaurants such as old favorites Can Culleretes and Els Quatre Gats offer special menus which traditionally include two courses, various wines and cava as well as the usual New Year´s paraphernalia: paper hats, comfetti…
But for Catalans midnight is just the start of New Year´s Eve. The discos and bars are open all night long full of those wanting to keep the party going.
