Mytop 5 lists and WHY: Top 5 Kombi of all time: 1. Tunnels 2. Downtown 3. Ninety-nine 4. Taka and To

Mytop 5 lists and WHY:

Top 5 Kombi of all time:
1. Tunnels
2. Downtown
3. Ninety-nine
4. Taka and Toshi
5. (Dont have one yet)

Tunnels never did manzai, and started off more as a monomane/gag duo. They were incredibly popular in the 80s and managed to obtain over 30% of the ratings nationwide with their shows (which is incredibly hard, for any show) and having seen their earlier works and Tunnels Mina-san okagedeshita, and Kuwazugirai, I can say I love those shows more than Downtown’s gottsu ee Kanjii and Gaki no tsukai. I love all 4 shows, but somehow I cannot imagine Gaki no tsukai without Matsumoto. Or Hamada. If either left, i dont think i would want to watch the show. That includes Heyx!3, their reliance on each other is amazing (as in a great bond) but it seems to say that we are only good as a team, and not solo. I love how Downtown takes punishments in their shows (theyre always the butt of the joke two, even though these two are incredibly big names in the show business). The second thing is, I love manzai too, but i just havent seen enough / understood enough to like it more than Tunnels work (which is understable without Japanese)

Ninety-nine is there solely because of Morning Musume and their connection with Tsunku, that and Okamura dances funny

Taka and Toshi are incredibly funny! Their manzai skits are…truly hilarious, though they tend to rely on their props to really cause the imagination to stir. But its amazing, Tunnels got to play pranks on them too! You can see Taka and Toshi skits on youtube (I may have linked to them in the past)

Top 5 Comedians of All time
Note: I like Japanese comedians, manzai and owarai above ALL other forms of comedy…which is why this list only has Japanese comedians.

1. Ishibashi Takaaki
2. Hitoshi Matsumoto
3. Masatoshi Hamada
4. Takashi Okamura
5. Tamori

1. Ishibashi Takaaki
I had my first true encounter with Japanese, and I can say hes been the reason why I even like it
Taka-san is outrageously funny, ridiculous at times, yet hes still a very sensible and well respected man. Hard to explain, until at least you watch him at work. Hes INCREDIBLY knowledgeable and smart, frequently citing a lot of western and Japanese references (which is funny when they relate or you can understand where hes coming from). His work in Tunnels (the comedy duo) is legendary, being very naturally funny (more so than Downtown in Gotsu ee Kanjii, to me least least) although he never really did true manzai.

His face expressions are amazing, and basically he can pull off any kind of emotion on his face at any time…he should really be an actor. His dress sense is very conservative, but to me its clean and respectable. And with Taka-san, I feel like Im laughing at his expressions AND his actions/ what he says. He is just so straightforwardly funny, and he is incredibly daring, referring to different things, touching female artists, asking for their numbers, showing the audience his knowledge of the video equipment, etc . His friendships with many famous people such as Nakai-kun, Matsuda Seiko, Tamori, Morning Musume etc are envious and it always seems like many positive things come out of it. His way of life (getting married, then having a child, being a family man, etc has also been positive to me), and hes like 180cm tall.

Even after their Tunnels era ended (in terms of popularity) hes been going well doing solo work, something that I cannot imagine Downtown (and neither can they) going solo. His successful transition is a reflection of his ability

Simply put, I LOVE HIM!!! Hes the best comedian

2. Although Taka-san is very much above everyone else in this list, Matsumoto comes 2nd (though not TOOO close).
Heres where I explain why Taka-san is my #1 vs why Matsumoto is my 2nd. So basing it on their comedic abilities alone, I think Taka-san and Matsumoto are pretty much even and equal. Their quick, their ad-lib skills are amazing and they can think of a reference / retort /challenge (all humourous of course) to anything. The thing that gives Taka the edge is that because of being in Tunnels and doing monomane and ippatsu gags a lot, he has more control of his face and can pull of a billion expressions that Matsumoto cant. So basically, as neither do manzai [anymore] and I see them mostly on Utaban and Heyx!3, Taka-san is the better of the two. This and the above list on Tunnels vs Downtown will explain why. I really do like Matsumoto though, and its hard to say, if I could understand Japanese and manzai, where his position would be (though I would understand Tunnels works more too)

3. Hamada is well respected and I like how hes angry, scary and totally sadistic. hes regarded more as the head of the group for Downtown, for various reasons I can see (such as taking the lead) but he is just not as naturally funny as matsumoto or Taka…even not doing his tsukommi role.

4. Okamura is only here because of the morning musume relations and acts he has done, otherwise I would of liked to put Sanma here (though I havent really understood what he was talking about)

5. Tamori is here for his amazing ability to renact a lizard and freak out Matsuda Seiko and Tunnels!

X Japan. Quite possibly the most famous name in Jrock and Visual Kei. And with good reason. As far as the world of Visual Kei is concerned, X Japan is The Godfather. Founded in Chiba, Japan, in 1982, originally under the name X, by drummer Hayashi Yoshiki and vocalist “Toshi” (Deyama Toshimitsu), the band shredded the Japanese indie rock scene with their huge glam-rock hair, androgynous glamor, and balladic, whiny, speed-metal sound.

Although the band started in ‘82, founders Yoshiki and Toshi were both attending high-school at the time, and the band didn’t really get going with lives until ‘85, which were performed with support musicians. In 1986 Yoshiki founded the independent record label Extasy Records as a surefire way of releasing music and supporting their dream. By ‘87 the band had completed its first formal lineup, settling in with Hide (Matsumoto Hideto) on guitar, and Sawada Taiji on bass, and “Pata” as a support guitarist.

The band released its debut album, Vanishing Vision, in ‘88 through Extasy Records, and toured extensively throughout Japan. In ‘89 the band made a big break with the ultra-popular album Blue Blood, which incited the release of several singles, including the all-time favorites Kurenai and Endless Rain. In 1991 the band performed for the first time in the prestigious Tokyo Dome.

By ‘92 the band had become so successful not only in Japan, but worldwide, that they were required to adopt the name X Japan in order to distinguish themselves as a separate entity from the American punk band X. In the same year, bassist Taiji was replaced with bassist Heath.

In 1996 the album Dahlia was released– which would mark the end of X Japan as a band. Vocalist Toshi had already decided to leave the band, and without him, X Japan could hardly continue with dignity, so they decided to split up and pursue their solo activities. They performed for the last time on New Year’s Eve at the Tokyo Dome.

hide ~ December 13th, 1964- May 2nd 1998

Guitarist and sometimes-composer of the band, hide (not to be confused with Hyde of L’arc~En~Ciel/Vamps) was a figurehead for X Japan. As the band progressed and developed, the other members steadily let go of the original Visual Kei emphasis in favor of a more casual, straight rock style. The exception to this rule was hide, whose bright pink hair and ultra-flashy style became a trademark fans would, and will, never forget.

Along with his work for X Japan, hide worked on solo projects (and released several albums and singles), including hide with Spread Beaver and Zilch (based in the US).

Like all of the members of X Japan, hide had become, by their disbandment in ‘97, a rock’n'roll icon. Japan was, then, utterly crushed when his sudden death was announced one year after the band broke up. hide was discovered in his Tokyo apartment, hung from the bathroom doorknob by a towel. His funeral was held in Tsukiji Hongan-ji (a Buddhist temple in the Tsukiji district of Tokyo), and was attended by 50,000 people, 60 of which were hospitalized during the event, and 200 of which were tended to in first-aid tents. Three fans died in copy-cat suicides.

There remains some speculation as to whether hide’s death was an accident or a suicide. Members of X Japan commented that they had often utilized a technique involving a towel and a doorknob/handle as a way of relieving back-pain caused by constant use of a guitar-strap. Former bassist Sawada Taiji suggests that hide may have been attempting to implement this technique and, drunk, passed out and gotten tangled up in the towel.

On May 1st 1999, almost exactly a year following hide’s death, a memorial album was released under the title Tribute Spirits. The album featured covers of hide songs by illustrious names such as fellow first-generation Visual Kei bands Luna Sea and BUCK-TICK. A Hide Memorial Summit concert was held at the Ajinomoto Stadium, where many bands, including X Japan, performed hide’s songs.

(Video: At the 2008 Hide Memorial Summit, X Japan performing together with Luna Sea)

But enough history!

These guys rock, and sorting them neatly into the pages of Jrock text-books would be doing their 15 years of rebellion a vast disservice.

Aside from deciding that Visual Kei was to be crazy and image-driven, X Japan had a massive impact on the music and composition styles. Although classified as a speed/power metal and progressive rock band, they made generous use of balladry, piano, and orchestration. Vocalist Toshi supplied unique vocals characterized by a high-pitched, whiny timbre. Several songs, including the all-time-famous ballad Tears (from the album Dahlia) were written with all-English lyrics, and sung boldly by the iconic vocalist.

Many of their songs passed the 10 minute length, climaxing with the album Art of Life, which contained only the title song, running a whopping 29 minutes. (1993. Art of Life was composed and written by Yoshiki, and performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. It was only performed live for three audiences.)

In the 15 years that X Japan was active, the band released 5 studio albums, 6 live albums, 10 compilation albums, 19 singles, and 15 video releases.

Autumn is my favorite time of the year, for many reasons. It involves many things, some tangible, some intangible. This most-alive atmosphere that is Autumn is a ripe womb for inspiration and memories. It is wet, the cold enticing, the smells pungent and earthy. It is a junction of past and present, of idealism and hope for the future.

Autumn also reminds me of high school. Today it struck me how my approach to love, while it has developed many new levels as I’ve poorly navigated adulthood, used to embody some sort of purity and naivety, even when occasionally laced with the bittersweet loneliness of youth, uncertainty, desire, perfection, and how it was all too much to make sense of, but you knew it when you felt it.

Listen, before mortgages and constantly-due bills, before 20 years of being ground down in the machinery of the western, industrial, military economy, the scars of your physical labor mere tattoos of your ever-growing cynicism, I once was young and loved fiercely and completely the ideals of perfection and possibility, only sensing the slightest shade of shivering love course through me. But what a rush of nature that nevertheless was.

Something about Autumn reminds me of Toshi, my first girlfriend…hell, my first love. I was 15, riding my bike to her house, trying many things for the first time…no, not THAT…but many things. We listened to a lot of Bob Marley. We read comics of The Fabulous Freak Brothers. We worshipped Debby Harry. We would sneak martinis in shampoo bottles to the loft in her house; they always tasted a bit…soapy. She was mischievous and I greedily followed her lead. We thrilled to getting into “Risky Business”, our first R-rated movie. We tie-dyed white sheets green-and-gold for Homecoming. She was intelligent, full of sunshine, her brown hair naturally framing her freckled face. I absolutely adored her.

Alas, that didn’t last, and it was a hard lesson. And this isn’t a post specifically about Toshi. It is a long stroll through the fallen leaves, memories I’m not sure still have life…well, they have life, but do they still hold the breath of possibility? Toshi colored everything for me for a long time, any girl I met thereafter was from that mold in some way.

I was 15 at that time. I count the crushes I had back in that time by one simple parameter; did I write a song or poem about them? Did they feed my desire and inspiration? You see, my point is, if you haven’t figured it out by now, is that love, when new, fills you with possibilities. I have faith that love can feel new for me again; it’s a matter of time, place and circumstance. I’m sick of beating myself up for lacking love right now. The poems and music seem a false pill, I’m sick of the art that supposedly soothes the lonely heart. It’s a bad habit of mine to long too much for a place, a time, a person, a right situation, instead of working towards that day. Art, in the case of my current love life, is just spitting in the wind, laced with regret and narcissism. Today, I want reality.

But 20 years ago, I knew nothing of reality, of credit cards, of accountability, that living up to your potential was required for the cultural success that is “The American Dream”. All I knew as a teenager was the intoxicating air of possibility surrounding these amazing promises of femininity, themselves trying to figure out their path.

So I’d give TJ shoulder rubs and straighten her hair in choir, nearly faint at being so close to her. Many of you know her, she was and is beautiful in heart and mind.

How many sugary letters filled with poetry did I write to Martha? I can tell you I still recall the sights, sounds and smells of every mile I’ve ever driven to and from Durand along the winding roads by the Mississippi River. And not just the first trip there, or the last trip there, but every trip there. Every mile full of anticipation, promise, and that word again, possibilities.

Carey and I would read to each other the poetry we’d written by candlelight in her backyard.

I bought Jodi antique teapots and tea balls, amazed how magical her one-room apartment in an Austin basement became simply because she was in the room. I scraped her name in the frost on the back hood of my maroon ’73 Buick Century. Later, Spring came and my mom asked me why the name “Jodi” was scratched in the paint on my car. It was a badge of honor. It was a tangible memento of the blood that screams in my veins.

So today, the air feels timeless and I’ve jumped back 20 years. The possibilities seem pure again. Here’s to the girls of Autumn, shivering in the cold, yet so feverishly alive. I would have treated you like a Queen.

(note: I feel I could have written this better. I may come back and revisit this topic later. The pictures posted with this blog entry are not of the girls mentioned, the pictures are only of random “Autumn Girls” who fit the mold…)

I CANNOT FORGET THE FAN CHORUS. EVER.

Endless Rain :

I’m walking in the rain
yuku ate mo naku kizutsuita karada nurashi
karamitsuku koori no zawameki
koroshi tsuzukete samayou itsu made mo
Until I can forget your love

nemuri wa mayaku tohou ni kureta
kokoro o shizuka ni tokasu
mai agaru ai o odorasete
furueru karada o kioku no bara ni tsutsumu
I keep my love for you to myself

* Endless rain, fall on my heart kokoro no kizu ni
Let me forget all of the hate, all of the sadness

Days of joy, days of sadness slowly pass me by
As I try to hold you, you are vanishing before me
You’re just an illusion
When I’m awaken, my tears have dried in the sand of sleep
I’m a rose blooming in the desert

It’s a dream, I’m in love with you
madoromi dakishimete
* repeat
I awake from my dream
I can’t find my way without you

The dream is over
koe ni naranai kotoba o kurikaeshite mo
takasugiru hai iro no kabe wasugi satta hi no
omoi o yume ni utsusu
Until I can forget you love
* repeat
Endless rain, let me stay
evermore in your heart
Let my heart take in your tears, take in your memories
* repeat *

Endless Rain(English) :

‘m walking in the rain,
though everything seems to be hurting me for some reason.
There is only nothing.
Just kill me now … as I roam forever.
Until I can forget your love.

To me sleep is a confusing, narcotic
that only quiets the beating heart.
All my love seems to flow from my body like a heart felt memory.
I keep my love for you to myself.

*Endless rain, fall on my heart In this wounded soul.
Let me forget, all of the hate, all of the sadness,

Days of joy, days of sadness slowly pass me by.
As I try to hold you, you are vanishing before me.
You’re just an illusion.
When I am awake, my tears have dried in the sands of sleep.
I’m a rose blooming in the desert.

It’s a dream, I’m in love with you.
Hold me warmly in your arms.
I awake from my dream
I can’t find my way without you

The dream is over.
I can no longer hear the voice of your gentle words.
Floating off tear stained walls.
So awakening in the morning, I’ll move into my dreams …
until I can forget your love.

repeat *

Endless rain, fall on my heart, in this wounded soul.
Let me forget, all of the hate, all of the sadness.
Endless rain, let me stay a memory in your heart.
Let me take in your tears, take in your memories.

Although i wanted to post some Owarai and Manzai I havent found any in decent quality/subbed

So i think ill just post some skits that ive found really funny:

First one is by a comedy duo called Unjash, i dont really know anything about them =_=”
Its about them talking on the phone, i think is the best of the lot

Second one is by a comedy duo called t&t (Taka and Toshi)
Its about a drunk man and a conductor on the train (they have conductors in the trains in Japan, they help push people in and are for security i think)

Third one is by Jinnai Tomonori-san hes a genius when it comes to comedy skits (it still feels like manzai),
but he tends to keep repeating things. His formula seems to be start off simple and go crazy and wild
