Lifted biceps, triceps, and shoulders. Barbell curls, dumbell curls, french press, tricep pull down, shoulder routine, dips. I also did the triangle marking drill twice for 40 seconds. Tossed for about 10 minutes today and yesterday. Not much, but it’s pretty cold.

Akira and Katta have been longin to find their place in volley. They’re strong, but nobody seems to let them expose the power. They just saw them as naughty and rebellious kids. That’s why they’ll be graduating without any recommendation letter.

But, it doesn’t matter. Akira and Katta can find their own place. First, they try to enter Seiryoh. It’s one of the 4 strongest team in the nation. Akira’s stubborn and Katta’s lack of  emotional restrain don’t fit the team. They are kicked right away.

Akira and Katta, then, choose Johnan, a governmental school club which succeed tackling Seiryoh last year. But, what welcome them here? The team is full of desperate people who had been defeated for 34 times in a row. That’s  sad. But, Akira and Katta are sure they can change everything. However, they have to get along with the rest of team first. Can they do it? Will they find their perfect place?

I love Nishiyama sensei’s work, but this one is too short. Only 3 volumes length. Too bad, she can explore more about this like the way she worked on Dragon Voice.

Back to copying and pasting at last! Commuters Britain-wide will have seen this in the Metro today, about a snake who ate himself. The poor animal was kept in a space that may have been too small, meaning in his desperation he saw his own tail and thought it was another snake. The tail tip was about to be digested by the time the vet unclamped his jaws.

This reminded me with warm feelings of the Darwin Awards, a glorious, wonderful site featuring people who have eliminated themselves from the evolutionary chain. ‘Natural deselection’ it’s called.

Cruel? Try not to to feel a bit of Schadenfreude when reading this one about stupid journalists…

But it got me thinking more generally about animals being put on a par with humans in the press. Animals, we’re told, are not ‘he’ and ’she’ in articles. “THEY DO NOT HAVE SOULS!“, our tutor cries, unless you’re writing for the Guardian about tossing a pigeon, or the Indie on the plight of “one of Britain’s ugliest dogs”.

Ew. But normally I have some issues with this stance. Could be something to do with the childhood lectures around the dinner table. Whatever their effect, I strongly feel animals shouldn’t be paraded around for our entertainment, just because they can’t speak for themselves.

Well – usually. I think in a case like this, an animal which knows that little of its arse from its elbow(!) shouldn’t really need to complain. And it’s only being paraded as much as a human who would do the same thing. Just look at world’s heaviest man Paul Mason in the Sun.

In fact, in my opinion, the real discrimination would be if poor Loopy Reggie wasn’t allowed to enter the Darwin awards. Not that it would win. People have done far stupider things than a snake ever could.

You don’t have the time or the resources to evaluate every applicant who strolls in. to guide your work, you should develop a profile of your “ideal” candidate. You may never find your ideal, but you will establish a basic framework that outlines the person you are looking for.

Developing an ideal candidate profile is similar to viewing a lineup of suspects after you’ve witnessed a bank robbery. The individual you pick out may not be the actual bank robber, but chances are the real criminal is strongly similar. Often, a lineup helps police establish the silhouette or basic framework of the person being sought. The police is clear even if the details are not. Likewise, your ideal candidate profile will give you a sharper idea of what you are really looking for, so that you can increase your odds of finding him or her.

Use the following outline to develop of profile of your ideal candidate:

Be specific when you draft your outline. If you want someone with strong follow-up skills, say so. If you want an assertive person who can handle high stress, say so. To create a good match between job and candidate, you need to define the person as closely as you define the job.

Keep your company culture in mind, too. If your company is team-oriented and flexible, you want a candidate who is comfortable with teamwork—and not everyone is. If your department is highly structured, you want someone who works well in a structured situation. Describe the qualities that your company values so that you can find compatible candidates.

Just remember that defining the candidate is a lot like shopping for groceries: the more you toss into your shopping cart, the more you’ll pay. The cost of filling a job is influenced by two factors: how long it takes to find the candidate, and the supply of qualified candidates. The greater the number of must have items on your list, the longer it’s going to take to find that person. The greater the experience, skills, or education requirements, the smaller the supply of candidates and the larger the compensation package required to hire the person.

If you enjoy juggling balls you might have had the urge to start juggling clubs but do not want to spend the money on a set until you have gotten the hang of it a bit. Or you do have a nice set but would like to have a set that can get beat up from practicing or lending out to people who wan to try it. There are inexpensive sets out there that are not comfortable on the hands but work fine. But if you have the time to construct  your own, you can get several sets for the price of even the inexpensive clubs. Also, you can customize them to look how you want. They work well and are not too terribly harsh on the hands. You can adjust the balance and how they look too.

These clubs are called Green Clubs by the person who came up with them because your can recycle old soda bottles and use items that may be around the house (tennis balls, dowel rods, electrical tape, duct tape, and a few others items). I did not come up with the Green Clubs. But I have made a set and they work pretty good. I think it is worth the time if you are on a budget.

Here I will follow his instructions and just provide pictures of the more difficult step, creating the handle.  Here is how I did it.

Making the Handle

1. This is the beginning of making the club. The white paper is the template for the handle wrap you will cut from a 2 littler bottle. You should have downloaded this from the above link.

Here the bottle will be on the left end of the dowel.

2. I used masking tape to secure the bottle but I used a little duct tape to hold the beginning of the green plastic (from a 2 litter bottle). Duct tape held it very secure and it will be covered later but something better looking.You will already have secured the other end of the rod inside of the bottle and attached half of a tennis ball to the top as directed by the Green Club instructions.

The plastic around the dowel provides some cushion for your hand. Plain dowel smacking your hands when you catch these hurt more.

3. Here is the first wrap over. I took the green plastic you see above and just wrapped it over once. You can see the duct tape better here. Duct tape was used in place of the suggested nails.

Notice the green plastic is covering the end of the bottle below (above?) where the bottle nozzle flares out.

4. Continue wrapping in a spiral down the handle until it reaches the tip. Wrap tight. Secure with little bits of duct tape here and there if you hare having trouble holding it.

5. Here it is almost to the end. Just need the last bit. You will need to hold this tight to tape down.

6. Here I have it taped down with duct tape securing it. Again, the duct tape will be covered. The tip is ready for its cover.

7. Here the handle is finished with electrical tape. There are many bright colors you can get. This color was what I had on hand. Just spiral wrap the tape down the handle tight. The tip has not been added here. Decorate the bottle part how you like. Do not get too carried away though or it will be too top heavy.

I was observed this morning by my University Supervisor. After the lesson, I felt like I bombed… and honestly it was the worst teaching job I’ve done with my 9th graders so far (out of about 10 days). But here’s what my professor wrote:

You did a nice job and I like the confidence and commanding voice that you use in front of the classroom…. You did a great job of trying to solicit class participation and trying to make the atmosphere more student-centered, but I can tell that this is not what they are accustomed to. Your lesson was creative and I enjoyed it. Keep up the good work….

I didn’t think of as many phrases as I thought I would, so I’m sure there are more out there. Toss and turn just came to me a few minutes ago, for example.

The first day of the Teaching Open Source Summit (TOSS) was great. I tried catching up with what other folks at the Free Software and Open Source (FSOSS) symposium were doing, but it was not what I thought it would be. Really, I had earlier thought I would be able to do both.  But I missed out on a couple of interesting workshops at the FSOSS.  However, TOSS was awesome. I met with great people – Greg from Red Hat, Frank from Mozilla, Karlie from Webpath, Mel, Dave, Fardad and Chris from Seneca, to mention a few.

There were a lot discussions on what has been happening in teaching open source around the globe. In addition, how Mozilla and Red Hat, as Open Source Software Companies, have been promoting Open Source Education was also discussed. At the end, we came up with a list of what we would like to have in TOS.

Our Needs at TeachingOpenSource (TOS)

No doubt, it was a great experience. For once, I could see the difference between a College/Polytechnic/Univ. of Technology and the conventional academia. And now, I am asking myself some questions – Where do I belong?, Where do I want to be?, Can I find a linkage between the two? I will be brainstorming on these questions in the next few days or weeks. For now,  I look forward to another great day today – FSOSS Presentations.

This week my family is participating in the Colin Beavan’s No Impact Experiment. Each day we’re focusing on a different aspect of our consumption and today is Trash Day.

Trash Day is an opportunity for us to think about the trash we create and make an effort to reduce our waste. So today I moved our trash can from the kitchen to the garage. Now throwing things away will take extra effort, and with that effort I hope a heightened awareness of what we’re throwing away.

Sound crazy? Maybe, but it’s completely doable. We already compost kitchen scraps; we have a kitchen compost bucket that we dump into our yard waste can (thank you Seattle for making composting easy). So the messy bits don’t go into our trash.

What does go into our trash? I think mostly bits of plastic that can’t be recycled – or bits I don’t think can be recycled. Soon I’ll know exactly what we throw away because in addition to moving the trash can to the garage, I’ll be looking through the trash at week’s end with my kids. I hope to make the experience a fun and interesting family activity (and if not, a funny story for my kids to share).

The goal? By knowing what we throw away, we can make reductions in the amount of trash we create each week.

It’s Food Waste Friday once again. Time to document the food I wasted this week, so that I can work to reduce my food waste.

Why do such a silly thing? Because I like silliness. And because what you focus on improves, and I’m interested in reducing my food waste. 

Food wasted this week: 

This week I wasted some leftover Indian takeout, some broccoli and some wilted chard. I’m currently trying to perk up some chard using a revival technique I found on Farm Fresh to You.

Submerge the wilted greens in cold water by placing them in a dish, filling it with water, and putting it in the refrigerator overnight. The next day the greens will be revived.

Greens revival? Sounds good to me.

To avoid broccoli waste in the future, I can blanch the broccoli and freeze the results for stir-fries. Blanching is great for vegetables like asparagus, green beans, spinach, cauliflower and broccoli. All too often I forget about using my friend Mr. Freezer when I have too much produce.

I wasted a bounty of broccoli and a red pepper that looks alright, but tasted mold-like (bleech - you know ‘that grossed out feeling, like you have slugs in your mouth’).

Why account for food waste? Americans typically waste 25% to 35% of the food they purchase, and I’m trying to be atypical (I’m a classic middle child). Documenting my weekly food waste, helps with my tendency to overbuy and forget about food at the back of my fridge.

While writing about slimy cucumbers this week I pondered the temperature of my fridge. My fridge was set to 38 degrees, which most web sites say is safe and appropriate. However, most sites suggest you can go as high as 40 or 41.

Setting your refrigerator between 37°F and 40°F will keep your food stored at a safe temperature without wasting energy. The optimal temperature for your freezer is 0-5°F.

So I changed my fridge temperature to 41. My freezer which was set to -4°, is now set to 2°F.

These small changes may not deter food waste, but should have an impact on my energy consumption.

Avete mai sentito parlare di “camera toss” ?

E’ una tecnica fotografica… cioè volevo dire, è pura follia.

Si tratta di effettuare scatti a lunga esposizione… e durante questa esposizione la fotocamera deve “volare libera in aria”. Si avete capito bene, va tirata in aria, facendole possibilmente inquadrare qualcosa di particolare e magari facendole fare una traiettoria rotatoria che in qualche modo realizzi  un’immagine interessante.

A parte analizzarne gli aspetti psichiatrici, la tecnica è per certi versi divertente. Inutile dire che l’unica possibilità di “non farsi veramente male” è quella di utilizzare una fotocamera di basso valore ed a cui non siete affezionati perchè le probabilità che dopo il “decollo”, l’atterraggio non sia proprio perfetto non sono da trascurare.

Dunque. Si prende la macchina e la si imposta in modo che il tempo di esposizione sia di almeno mezzo secondo/un secondo. Questa cosa può essere di qualche difficoltà se la vostra povera macchinetta-volante è di basso livello ed ovviamente tutta automatica. In genere è comunque presente qualche regolazione per fare foto negli interni, in caso scegliete quella. Poi va stabilito il soggetto che è meglio abbia una buona caratterizzazione luminosa su sfondo il più scuro possibile. Evidentemente condizioni di scarsa illuminazione aiutano anche ad ottenere tempi di posa un po’ più lunghi su macchine automatiche.

Non resta che impostare l’autoscatto e prendere il tempo… la macchinetta va lanciata cercando di sincronizzarsi in modo da far si che l’esposizione avvenga durante il volo. Inutile dire che l’abilità sta nel dare la giusta “impostazione” al volo, in modo che l’obiettivo non perda di vista il soggetto. L’arte poi sta tutta nel dare la giusta “rotazione”, il giusto movimento insomma per fare un vero scatto d’autore….

Eccovi la mia perosnale versione di questa follia. Lo scatto del cruscotto della mia auto. La macchinetta una Canon Powershot impostata in manuale a mezzo secondo di esposizione…
