Singer, teacher, director, producer, impresario, musician…each of these words describes Guillermo Silva-Marin and sometimes he is all these in a single day.

It’s hard to hit a moving target, but I managed to persuade Silva-Marin, or “Bill” as he’s known to his friends, to consent to an interview, because I believe people need to know more about this self-effacing powerhouse.  He’s an oxymoron, because he’s dynamic without being an egomaniac, effective without cracking a whip or raising his voice (except perhaps when he sings).  I was fortunate to meet him relatively early on, when he was an up and coming baritone, then later a tenor.  I recall his charming presence as Scaramuccio in Lotfi Mansouri’s production of Ariadne auf Naxos at the COC, a role which he would also cover at the Met.

Stuart Hamilton chose to pass the torch – leadership of Opera in Concert (OiC), one of the artistic treasures of this city– to Silva-Marin.  It’s scary to imagine what this city might be like if he hadn’t chosen to settle here, as Bill went on to found another important company in this city, namely Toronto Operetta Theatre(TOT); and he’s the driving force behind Summer Opera Lyric Theatre (SOLT).  These three institutions are key stepping stones for singers learning their craft, undertaking new roles, and showcasing their talents.

The Opera In Concert season has just ended, and now it’s on to La Vie Parisienne from TOT. And then it’s on to SOLT’s 2013 opera workshop, which culminates in a series of public performances at the Robert Gill Theatre, University of Toronto to showcase the artists and their work.

I ask Guillermo Silva-Marin ten questions: five about himself, and five about his roles as General Director of Opera in Concert, Toronto Operetta Theatre and Summer Opera Lyric Theatre

1) Which one of your parents do you most look like (what is your nationality / ethnic background)?

Guillermo (“Bill”) Silva-Marin (click for more about SOLT)

I look like my father Juan Osvaldo – very Hispanic look with a 50% Spanish blood.

2) What is the best thing or worst thing about being an impresario presenting opera & operetta?

Best thing has always been working with Canadian talent at the height of their powers and young emerging ones with their great enthusiasm and energy.

Worst thing, not having enough time to do it all. I need 24 hours extra a day.

3) Who do you like to listen to or watch?

I listen to music, any kind. I watch documentaries, the news and TVO/PBS (anything)

4) What ability or skill do you wish you had, that you don’t have? –

Foresight, I wish I could tell the future but I am resigned.

5) When you’re just relaxing and not working what is your favourite thing to do?

Reading – philosophy, murder mysteries, the classics, religions

Five Questions about work with Opera in Concert, Toronto Operetta Theatre and Summer Opera Lyric Theatre (SOLT):

1) How does being the General Director of Opera in Concert challenge you?

The company is small and works under financial restrictions. This spills over into the ability to safeguard the artistic process and complement what the artists bring to the table.

The greatest challenge is to provide a forum that is supportive to the creative process within a limited time span. We solve this with accurate timetables, tight schedules and open discussion of objectives. We try to make sure everyone understands the challenge, artistic, musical, dramatic, financial and managerial.

2) What do you love about presenting operas & operettas in Toronto? 

We deal in innovation and daring artistic programming. Every day there is discovery, a Pandora’s box environment – surprises. I thrive and love the challenges and so do the artists working under my guidance.

3) Out of the complex planning and development cycle, what’s your favourite moment when you mount an opera or operetta? 

There are no specific moments but a process that evolves as you face new and fresh developments. The process is organic and unpredictable to a point but never inflexible or static.

4) How do you relate to the opera community as a 21^st century man? 

I have the privilege to introduce new works to our community and our artists. There lies the beauty of my position among the tapestry of arts organizations in Canada.  I wish there were more resources to do more.

There are many teachers but Stuart Hamilton comes to mind and the late Dixie Ross Neill.

The guild I’m in is called Sinners (dreadfully manly, I know), and we have a lovely set of guys who love to look after me. Who am I kidding, they all take the mickey out of my Midlands accent!!! We have only recently started raiding properly, but almost always have to PUG someone as we are only casual and really, we just want to have a bit of fun. (I say ‘we’ as a royal we here!). As a result of this, it often takes a few attempts at clearing a boss due to the poor PUGs getting used to our way of working so progress is slow and steady.

However, this last week our progression has been, frankly, exceptional (Syntar maintains that he carried us through by repeatedly ‘facebutting’ the boss whilst we watched…). Until last week, we had 6/6 on MSV and 1 boss down in HoF and ToES. However, this last week we finally managed to get Wind Lord down, making it 3/6 in HoF, and… we completed ToES! /happydance

I know Lei Shi is a nightmare (harder than Sha I thought), but that was the encounter I enjoyed most in ToES.

We finished with a wonderful success against the first boss in ToT, Jinroch. Needless-to-say, we all started the week with rather large egos.

The Milton Spring and Summer 2013 Community Services Guide is here!

It’s funny what things excite me these days, and getting the guide is one of them.  Although it is no longer delivered, it can be viewed online or picked up from various community locations.

Now that my son is 15 months old, I was excited to start seeing what activities he can do.  At the same time, staying at home means a loss of income to our house, so I also need to find the most affordable activities for my son and daughter, who is almost 3.

3 years old is a magic number when it comes to activities.  This seems to be the common age where kids are able to join activities on their own, no more Parent and Tot!

Although, I am signing my daughter and I up for one more Parent and Tot swimming class.  We are almost finished the winter session and I find that she’s just starting to get it.  I’d like to continue her excitement for swimming, which will also lead to her swimming on her own in the Summer session.

However, my son has done two Parent and Tots, and that was one too many.  Everyone has their own preference, but I feel that doing one Parent and Tot early on is fun, but the classes are the exact same so after doing one, waiting until they’re over 2 years old is a good idea.  I also don’t think I’ll do anymore Saturday morning classes.  It is so chaotic and I wasn’t happy at the amount of parents on the pool deck.  Now that I have seen the quietness of lessons during the day I don’t think I could ever go back.

I am still thinking about signing my daughter up for the Kindercamp.  Because she is at home with me every day, I am thinking going to a structured event without me might be good for her.  I’m hoping it doesn’t fill up right away and I’ll decided in a couple of months.

As for my son, no luck.  Unfortunately he is at an in-between age.  There are activities for 18 months and up, so I’ll wait a few more months.  Ideally I’d like to find something that both kids can go to together, but I don’t think will happen until my son is 2 years old.  But I am glad to see that the Preschool Gym Time hasn’t changed; that’s one of our favourite weekly activities.

With just swimming to register for, I have my alarm clock set for bright and early Tuesday March 26.  Fingers crossed that the day time swimming lessons aren’t as popular

What Spring and Summer activities are you looking at?

For the fourth year, we will have the opportunity to thank the staff and volunteers of the Fairview Family Resource Centre/Parent ‘n’ Tot for their work in our community, and support their efforts by helping with their main fundraiser.

The community is lucky to be home to this Resource Centre.  The work the staff is doing to promote literacy, skills development, public health, mental health and early education is vital to the health and success of our friends and neighbours.

As a not-for-profit organization, they need your support to be able to continue to provide these services to families in the Fairview area.  YOU can help to make a difference by participating in 3 ways:

1. PUT A TEAM TOGETHER! It is great for workplace morale, or gather your family and friends for a couple of hours of fun. There will be PRIZES. Just ask for team sponsors or pledges for your participation.

By contrast, imports to the northeast of conventional gasoline for blending have risen from 319,000 barrels a day in 2007 to 430,000 barrels a day in 2012. The lack of refining capacity in the northeast means that the country’s most populous region needs to get its gasoline from somewhere, and for now that means the U.K., the Netherlands, Spain, Norway, and France, as well as India and Canada.

According to MarketWatch, Goldman Sachs released a note to clients today citing excess European refining capacity and higher costs are slashing margins for European-based refiners and concludes that the Europeans should cut their output in order to get prices back up.

That’s not good news for northeast U.S. drivers who have been paying around $0.30 a gallon more for gasoline than the U.S. average. Because northeast refineries were importing virtually all the crude they refined, as the differential grew between Brent crude and WTI crude these refiners sold their plants when they could or mothballed them. Gasoline exports from Europe filled the gap because the Europeans have cut gasoline consumption even farther and faster than U.S. consumers.

Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE: RDS-A), Total SA (NYSE: TOT), Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM), BP plc (NYSE: BP), Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX), and ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) all have major refining operations in Europe and cutting refining output is easier said than done. Current prices for gasoline on the IntercontinentalExchange are higher now than futures prices in December, which means that if the refineries are going to make any money this year, now is not the time to cut output.

That may not be true in a few months, though, depending on the direction of crude prices. The spread between Brent and WTI fell below $14 a barrel recently and is around $15 a barrel today after rising as high as $20 earlier this year. If that gap narrows to below $12 a barrel on a drop in the price of Brent, the economics of refining in Europe begin to tighten.

Goldman might have pulled the trigger a little early on its call for a cutback in refining output in Europe, but such a cut is certainly possible later this year.

If it’s going to be your first time, too, consider using a DD-character for it and take your time to analyze what’s going on around you. You’ll certainly not have the time to do so while tanking and you might miss important stuff. Ten Ton Hammer has a great LRF Guide to the first two ToT-Instances and even gives a nice, short summary which you can copy and paste into your /raid . (At least, if your server’s language is English – I’ve tried it on a German speaking server and… well, we wiped. Repeatedly. No one read those few lines =/ )

Here are some insights I gained while tanking

Preparation

Get some Flasks of the warm Earth before you set foot into the raid and make sure you have the new Mogu Rune of Fate! That’s the new version of the extra-loot charms used in Mogushan, Hearth of Fear and Terrace of Endless Springs. You can get them from the vendor below the shrine for the usual 90 lesser charms

The entrance

ToT is much harder than the Terrace, keep that in mind when you’re encountering trash. People are probably storming into the first two trash groups right behind the instance’s entrance, thinking “it’s just trash and this is LFR” and you might wipe if you, your fellow tank and the healers don’t pay attention. There are many (semi)patrolling trash groups in ToT, so please, be careful while pulling.

Jin’rokh the Breaker

It’s a rather easy fight. As a Tank, you’ll want to taunt the boss whenever your fellow Tank is hit by “Static Burst”. So far, it works almost like Tsulong on the Terrace. DBM will show you when a Tank suffers from it. The boss is going to pick you up and throw you across the room several times. You’re going to be dazed and unable to move for a few seconds. While you’re dazed, the boss will still cast Static burst, so keep your eyes on DBM or the other Tank will shout about what an awful Tank you are. Oh, and don’t forget to watch your stagger! I don’t know about you, but in the last few weeks of Mogushan and Terrace, I was watching it less and less. In this fight, I had to constantly use Purifying Brew in order to stay alive.
DDs have lots of running to do during this fight. They’ll need to stand in water until the water looks electric, then move on to the next watery area. As soon as the whole room is flooded and electrified, the boss gets into a soft enrage and starts to deal more damage.

The way to Horridon

After Jin’rokh, you’ll be on your way to Horridon and you are going to cross the bridge. I’ve read about it in different blogs before I encountered it for the first time myself and thought: “No, it can’t be that hard. It’s just a bridge, isn’t it?”. Short answer: “It’s even worse.” Remember the winds from the water elemental on the Terrace? They are back and want to kill you.
You’ll easily recognize the bridge when you step on it. There’s an abyss on both sides and the wind is blowing from the left (make sure it really does, I’ve been in there twice and it didn’t change, but maybe it will for you ). There are ghosts crossing the bridge from end to end – they have a blue area all around them – don’t step into it! From time to time, banshees will spawn and you’ll have to kill them (while running against the wind and avoiding the ghosts). There are some seemingly safe spots for healers or people who can mass-resurrect, but I was unable to find one of those spots for myself. Use your Statue of the Ox often to pull the adds together to a relatively safe area!
After crossing the bridge, you’ll find yourself on a round platform with one or two (I don’t remember anymore) mobs to fight, then you’ll have to face the second part of the bridge.
At some point, I got the feeling that there might be pit traps on the bridge, but I didn’t find any That’s a plus, I guess ^^
As a Tank, be prepared to be called names repeatedly =/ It’s hectic on the bridge and there is so much to watch out for that you might miss adds.

Horridon

It may sound strange, but the most important thing about this boss is to ignore it. It’s a giant dinosaur with a front and back attack – so as a Tank, you might feel lonely in front of him. Your raid should be standing on its sides. From time to time, Horridon will open gates and Trolls will come out. DDs should kill them as fast as possible, turn to the Dinomancer, kill him, click on the orb (and get out of the way! Yes, the orb will stick to you, but Horridon won’t charge the one holding the orb, it will charge the gate) and resume killing the Dino again. As soon as all four gates are closed, Jalak will spawn. Your raid has to kill him and soon after Horridon, since Horridon will get rather angry after killing the Troll.

There seem to be two strategies for Tanks for this fight:
1. Switching after each gate
You’ll have to switch places with your fellow tank as soon as one gate is closed, so he’ll resume tanking the adds. On one try, our LFR group tried it and I found it surprisingly hard to get all those Trolls to come and hit me without accidentally provoking Horridon again >.< I had to re-cast Statue of the Ox in different places so enough Trolls would be affected by provoke. Additionally, while tanking Horridon, it felt kind of confusing which door was open, so I could get him in front of it. It may be a good idea to have someone point/click on the map where the gate is open.
2. One Tank for Horridon, one for the adds
If you want to try this strategy, make sure you are either very fast in killing everything or have a Paladin put you into a bubble at some point. Horridon stacks a debuff on the tank which will increase the damage he takes. Watch out for your Purifying Brew and use it often, if you are tanking the boss. You can easily roll out of his cone attack.
If you are tanking the adds, make sure you try not to step into stuff – totems, bears, differently colored patches of ouch on the ground or the front-and-back-attack of Horridon.

The way to the Council of Elders

After killing a group of mobs, stay there and wait for them to rise again as ghosts or they’ll attack your raid from behind while you’re fighting the next group. If you seem to have the choice of either killing group A or group B: Kill both. We added one of those groups during the boss fight and it didn’t make our fight easier.

Council of Elders

I don’t think I have ever encountered a fight as chaotic as this one. You are going to fight four bosses, each of whom will be possessed by a spirit for about 25% of its health. Try to group the four together as best as possible, so your ways from one boss to the next is short. After losing 25% of the health of one boss, the spirit will switch to another one – look out for the black-blue-lightning one if you’ve missed the DBM-announcement. The other Tank and I just tried to tank the current “most important” boss, but apart from that we didn’t really have any kind of strategy. After a rather long fight, the Council went down. /cheer ^^

Summary

Be prepared for long, tough fights and lots of whining/flaming LFR-members. If you step into the instance for the first time, at least tell the other tank so he might point out different strategies (if he knows any). Apart form that, enjoy the new raid – it is a great one! Good luck with your extra loot rolls ;D

Advantages to considering trash farming Throne of Thunder:

• Trash before first boss can drop 522 items (Unverified list of trash drops here:

  )
• Trash awards a small amount of rep (drop a banner), and will stop just before friendly (just get peeps to do the solo scenario to push it over)
• Raiders are dead-set keen to look-see even if they aren’t up for the boss because your poor guild is incredibly behind /sigh

Trash before 1st Boss: Tank debuff, take two tanks and switch Tanks. Equals easy trash.

In the roaming packs (If I recall there were about 3 groups roughly and a couple of patrols) there are the odd casters (1-2). To help out make sure you put some interrupts on these ie your tanks and melee, and focus down the storm-inclined-one then the water-inclined-one.

Honestly people instincts instincts: the usual wow instincts work fine in this case, any mob with spirit/water in the name having a mana bar may of course heal so CC or splat it ASAP and anything storm named with a mana bar is going to cast lightning on your butt… and in a thunder themed instance that’s probably going to hurt so they are the obvious first kills in your kill order.

We pulled things down the stairs into the courtyard to play it safe.

The rub came with one Crazed Storm-Caller. He caused some wipes, about three I think.

How we dealt:

• Heroism/Bloodlust cast immediately
• Stack in and pound on mob (nicknamed mini-boss) – Push DPS
• Then when he powered up (enlarged red troll) spread raid so the thunderpools he drops on players do not over lap (we did not run these anywhere we had the healers heal through them)
• DPS blew healing cooldowns to assist.
• Tanks blew their tanky cooldowns

And he just sort of fell over like proper trash.

… a look in and three pokes at Jin’rokh the Breaker and it looks hopeful with a little LFR gearing up perhaps we can skip clearing the rest of HoF and ToES and come here for current content (well I can dream)

NB: anyone else noticed that their paladin tank is also dishing out healing and DPS almost as good as a MS DPS or healer? O_o Lordie or is ours just special?

Also I have a new posting rule… if I had to google for information about something game-related then I will write a post about that something… 20 hits I feel almost popular pppffft.

Now let’s talk about what I do know. I know how it feels like to start a roar of cheer for the fastest “15 year old” in town that is representing your school. I know what it feels like to shout till your eyes go red and your veins pop out. Studying in a boys school and dancing, centre stage with all the awkward moments as your dressed like a girl [I’m telling you awkward] with the entire school whistling for you [or at you], I know what that’s like too. I know what it’s like to go to school and stand in line with your fingers crossed hoping you would not get pulled up for untidy shoes and run 4 laps around the ground. I know what it feels like to trespass the tennis court and start playing only to go ahead and get caught by the Vice Principal. I so well know the moment when you are gazing out the window and it’s about a minute before for the bell rings, and you get to go home.  And you see the peon walk towards the bell and that makes you so happy. Those 4-5 moments are golden when you see the peon is about to start ringing the bell with a metal stick. Anxious moments are these that shall never be forgotten.

I know what it’s like to walk out of the exam hall and thinking “I’m not going to discuss the paper with anyone” and the moment someone asks you, “Hey, how did it go man?” and you say “You know the 4^th section for paragraph answers, the 2^nd one only asks about “How Toto was a playful monkey right? Nothing more, right?”  And you always get the reply “Dude I left that question in choice.”  I know what it’s like to be neglected and I’m happy to say it gives you experience to build character. I know how happy a kid gets or rather as a kid how happy you get when you ask someone the answer in the exam hall and get the right answer form your friend. And I also know how mad you get when you find that the “friend” was wrong. I know how happy you get when a class gets cancelled or how thrilling it gets when you get 2 periods of physical training.  I so well know the happiness you get when your own school triumphs in sports and your voice is drained in hundreds. I know how happy you get when your friend gets caught in class and the time goes on in finding out the truth. I know what it’s like to be scared of teachers and it’s amazing. I know the efforts and pain that you go through to redecorate the school ground when it rains just one day before. I know what it’s like to be a gentleman as you wear your school name. I know what it’s like to believe in the school motto that says “Non-Quam non Paratus” which means “Never Unprepared.”

Now let’s get back to what I don’t know. I don’t know what it’s like to study all year long to get good grades. I don’t know what it feels like to answer the question your teacher asks when it’s not a test.  By this time guys my age would have let bygones be bygones. I somehow hold on those memories. This is because of one saying that always stays with me when I’m down. You can take me away from the Winner, I repeat by intention “You can take me away from the winner, but you cannot take the Josephite out of me.
