I’M FULL OF GOOD IDEAS

Are you one of those people who saves every little bit of fabric?  I know many people must save scraps because most of my scrap fabrics came to me as scraps.  They came in bags and boxes with sewing notions and unfinished quilts.  The other day I was so fed up with having so many bits and pieces that I decided to do something about it.  I decided to make a simple crazy patchwork quilt.

I was feeling rebellious, so I decided to just lay the fabric out and sew it with the raw edges showing.  It seems simple.  I think it may be just as much work to hide the raw edges as to leave them exposed.  Luckily I really like the look of exposed raw edges.  I was sort of disappointed that I didn’t have many showing.

I had Wonder Under, some scrappy canvas and loads of fabric scraps.  I figured someone else loved them enough to save them, so mixing up all those pretty pieces had to be good.  I just grabbed a bunch of fabric scraps from my collection, ironed them and attached them to my canvas.

I did a lot sewing. I tried out most of the stitches available on my sewing machine. I made sure the pieces of fabric were very securely attached to my canvas. I put as many bits of lace and trim as I could find. On the front I put a toggle button.

On the back I attached a loop of grosgrain ribbon by zigzagging over the two ends of the ribbon.

I knew I was done when I emptied all but one of my sewing bobbins.

I had to save some thread for sewing the lining in my scrappy bag.  I used fabric from my eldest first (and only) quilt.

It’s quite a large bag.  I’m still trying to decide whether to save it or give it away.  I can always make a few more.  I still have quite the fabric stash in boxes under the bed.  I think I’ll do a bit of experiment…maybe a few smaller bags would be nice?

For all you vinyl lovers out there!!! This tote bag is made to hold up to 40 records inside the proportionally correct canvas bag. Quadruple studded leather straps allow for easy handling and security carrying what will be a heavy load of wax.

3. What is the difference between the $99 Consultant Kit and the $149 Consultant Kit?

The same products are offered in each kit and most of the products can be personalized, regardless of which kit you choose.  The difference is that with the $149 kit, you can choose your fabrics for each of the items.

4.  What are the benefits of being a Thirty-One Consultant?

5. What is a “Skirt Purse”?

Some of you may remember the wooden-handled purses with interchangeable covers that buttoned on (well, if you were alive in the 70s that is).  The skirt purse is a much more modern and classy version of this purse.  The top of the purse is leather and folds over to hide the top of the skirt that is attached to the purse body by multiple metal fasteners.  The skirts are very easy to replace making it a snap to change the look of your purse as often as you need to without having to transport all your “stuff” from one bag to another.  The skirt purse comes in black or brown and is made with a high quality material that allows you to carry the bag without a skirt as well.  The skirt purse is $42 and comes with a free skirt of your choice.  You can then purchase additional skirts for only $15 – it’s like getting a new purse for only $15!

8. Can Thirty-One help me with my fundraiser?

Absolutely!  I would be happy to talk to you about putting together a fundraiser for your non-profit group!  As a director of a non-profit child care center, I know how important fundraising is and I will be glad to help in any way that I can!

9. What is required of me if I sign up to be a Consultant?

First of all, you must be at least 18 years old and a US citizen (or permanent resident) with a valid social security card or green card. When you sign up to be a consultant, you are agreeing that you will have  at least $1000 in sales.   You are required to uphold the reputation of Thirty-One and to present the products in an honest manner.  You are not required to purchase any other products or business supplies (although these are essential to your success!)

10.  What is the “fine print”, you know, the “hidden details” they don’t tell you until you sign up?

There are none.  Truly.  Thirty-One is a faith-based company and there are no surprises, no schemes, no new requirements you discover only after signing up.  I am sometimes a little too honest and will truly tell you like it is so if you have a question, please ask!  Please don’t let the fear of the unknown hold you back from realizing your dreams!

11.  I want to be a consultant, how do I get started?

The first thing I advise you to do is book parties!  The first party you should book is for yourself!  Host an Open House to introduce Thirty-One and all we have to offer to your family and friends.  Not only does this give you an opportunity to have people book more parties, but you can use the hostess benefits to get more products to add to your display!  It is highly encouraged for you to book parties even before your kit arrives because there are great incentives and freebies if you meet certain goals during your first few months.  If you join my team, you will receive party tips from both myself and our team director.  Thirty-One also has tons of training and resource materials on its consultant-only website.  In addition, there is a yahoo forum for consultants that has an overwhelming amount of files, advice, photos, peer support and more!

12. Is there a minimum I have to sell to stay a consultant?

In order to remain an active consultant, you must submit a qualifying show or cumulative sales of $200 within a 3 month consecutive period.

13. Do I have to recruit new consultants?

You have no obligation to recruit new consultants.  However, once you reach the Senior Consultant level, you start to earn commission on the sales of your recruits.  I hope you will find that as a consultant, you are so excited about the company and the products that you will be thrilled to share the opportunity with others – but that is completely your choice!

14. What kind of support do consultants get from the Home Office?

Consultants receive an unbelievable amount of support from the Home Office.  The consultants-only web site is packed with party, business, and recruiting tools.  There are regular trainings, tips for success and more!  The Home Office also offers incentives and rewards for consultants throughout the year.

15. How much time does it take to be a consultant?

The amount of time you put into being a consultant is completely up to you.  You can put in as little or as much as you have time for.  I have a full time job, 2 kids, a husband, and church responsibilities.  I have learned to schedule “break” days in advance to ensure that I don’t schedule too many parties so that I can’t be effective or energetic.  I have found that the yahoo forum has really helped me because there are incredibly talented and giving women on there who very generously share their flyers, product tags, incentives, etc. which saves me A LOT of time.  I am so very thankful to these women who make my life so much easier, especially since I know how much time they must put into the things they create and share.

16. Where can I find out about specials?

You can view the monthly customer and hostess specials at www.mythirtyone.com/emilypage. Click on Specials or Hostess Rewards.

17. Is there an extra charge for personalization?

Embroidery is $6 for an initial, monogram, word(s), or name.  Appliques are $5, vinyl letters are $7.   Silver hang-off letters are $5.  For hostess half-price items, the embroidery is half-off as well.

18. Do consultants get commission on personalization?

Yes!  Consultants make commission on personalization, retail orders, hostess retail orders, and hostess credit overage.  Consultants do not make commission on hostess half-price items.

19. What is the Thirty-One outlet?

The Thirty-One outlet at www.thirtyoneoutlet.com is open twice a year and offers HUGE discounts on discontinued Thirty-One products.  All of my customers are added to my email list (unless they request otherwise) and will receive a notification from me when the outlet is open.  Once open, items go quickly so you have to act fast!

20. Do party orders get shipped to the hostess or the consultant?

Party orders can be shipped to the hostess or the consultant.  Unless a hostess objects, I have all party orders come to me which allows me to check the order and then bag the products and label the bags so that all the hostess has to do is hand out the bags!  I have the orders shipped to my office so that the box of products is never left on a porch where it may be stolen.

21. How do friends/relatives from out of town order from a party?

You have the option to set up your party online.  Friends and relatives of your hostess can go online and select the party they wish to shop from.  These orders are not truly placed until the party order is submitted.  NOTE: If they do NOT select the party before placing their order, the order will be submitted immediately to the home office and will not count towards the party total.

22.  How are the orders paid for?  Are they paid when the order is placed or when it is received?

Orders are paid for at the time of purchase.  Customers ordering online must use a debit or credit card.  Orders placed directly to you can be paid by cash, check (made out to you), money order, or credit card.  You must use your personal debit or credit card to pay for any orders that were paid to you by cash, check, or money order.  I highly recommend getting a checking account just for Thirty-One.  You can have your commissions direct deposited into this account and it will make doing your taxes a million times easier than if you use your household checking account.

23. Are my expenses as a consultant tax-deductible?

Certain expenses are tax-deductible but you should speak to a tax advisor or accountant for help in determining your deductions.

24. What is a “qualified” party?

A “qualified” party is a party with $200 in retail sales (not including tax or shipping).

25. What happens if a party order does not get up to $200?

If a party order does not reach the $200 mark, I will work with you to see what we can do to increase your orders.  It is also possible that I may have an individual order from someone else that I can add to your party total.  If all of our efforts fail, there will be a $4 direct-ship charge added to each customer and their order will be shipped directly to the location of their choosing.

26. Does it matter which consultant I go through to sign up for Thirty-One?

You should sign up with the consultant most likely to help you through the process and answers any questions you have prior to your enrollment.  Once you sign up with a consultant, she is your sponsor and will be one of your primary contacts for questions and assistance.  If you live within 2-3 hours of Sanford, NC and you join my team, I will help you with your first party and bring all of my products so that you have more items to introduce to your friends and family.  If you live outside of the area and join my team, I will send you an additional product for your display.  To join my team, log on to www.mythirtyone.com/emilypage and click on “Join my Team.”

27. What is a “catalog party”?

A catalog party is a party where the hostess passes out catalogs to friends, family, and co-workers and takes the orders and payment.  The hostess decides when to end the catalog party and then passes on the orders to me and I enter them online just like a home party.   I will also set the party up online so that people can order directly online and pay by credit or debit card.  I will provide you with emails that you can send out to your potential customers announcing your party and detailing how they can order.

28.  Are consultants allowed to show Thirty-One products at trade shows, craft fairs, etc.?

Absolutely! In fact, you can receive a gift certificate towards the purchase of catalogs by participating in trade shows or fairs.

29. What resources exist for Thirty-One consultants?

Thirty-One’s website for consultants has a tremendous amount of resources which include trainings, files, party tips, ordering guides, and so much more.  As I mentioned earlier, there is a yahoo group of Thirty-One consultants that is a wonderful resources for ideas, support, encouragement, advice, and files that will help you to succeed in your new business! Your sponsor (hopefully me!) and your director are also great resources for you!

30.  I’m ready to make my dreams come true!  How do I sign up to be a  consultant?

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR??

Today I finally finished the drawing for a Christmas card design I  started on 3 Christmases ago.  Originally I was going to do what most greeting card companies suggest and cut paper and use that technique to keep the design simple. I even had some brown paper that was just the right color for the camels that I wanted on my card.  So after going to Wetcanvas.com and checked their free reference photo library to refresh my mind on what a camel REALLY looks like, I turned the computer off and got to work drawing some camels on my brown paper and cutting them out with an Exacto knife. The camels turned out really well and there was even one who looked particularly spunky and happy to be traveling to Bethlehem. doing the paper cut outs did help with the composition, because it was then just an easy matter of placing one overlapping the other instead of trying to figure out where one would end and the other begin while I was drawing them. By the time I had gotten the Christmas star as well as some other stars cut out, in addition to my camels, some wise men, the manger, and a concept sketch for Mary and Joseph cut out I decided what I really wanted to do was to PAINT the card rather than work with paper cut outs.  In retrospect I wish I had stayed with the original concept instead of changing in mid stream, because I would have been done a long time ago. It created a lot of extra work to have to trace the things I had already cut out onto another piece of paper.  Then I started a long and tedious process of  drawing on tracing paper  and then tracing what I had drawn onto some heavy duty art paper after having cut it and arranged it in the composition I wanted.  Another thing I wish I had done a little differently would be to make the original drawing larger than the card and then just use the computer to shrink it down. Of course that might just encourage me to add even more detail and make things even more complicated ;/

I love the composition in this card. What I was really going for was the “perfect” Christmas card–something that perfectly expressed my feelings and sentiments about the meaning of Christmas, rather than some of the shallower, albeit fun Christmas messages out there. So in the center of this design is a heart with the Christmas star centered above it and piercing downward into it. Then moving around clockwise like a Mandela three little stars seem to dance in with joy in the night sky with the desire to follow the three wise men to Bethlehem. The three wisemen and their camels curve around the heart , hugging it closely on their journey to see the newborn king. Even one of the camels cannot contain his joy has as with a merry face he saunters jauntily along. Beyond the caravan a shepherd kneels with his sheep in adoration of the Christ Child. The infant Jesus smiles in his sleep in the manger as Joseph lovingly supports a weary, but joyful, Mary on his shoulder.  Moving upward around the second half of the heart, the composition then moves through some of the important events of Christ’s life.  We see the sea of Galilee where the apostles on their ship watch in awe as Christ walks toward them on the water. Next we follow a path past the house where the bedridden man is let down through the roof so that Jesus can heal him. The road continues on towards the mount where the multitude listens to Him teaching the Beatitudes. Next is a portrayal Him pleading with his Father in the Garden of Gethsemane. Beyond the Cross the Resurrected Lord is met by Mary at the tomb.

Right now this is simply a line drawing, but by this time next year I plan on having a full color version available for sale.as for now this design is  also available on a variety of other zazzle products. Within the next couple days it will also be available as a print and greeting card on both Imagekind and RedBubble.

This is one of the three I have most recently finished. And I’m fascinated by the color and texture contrast, even though I paired them together =)

And I just found out that this tote has been featured in an etsy treasury!  Click on the link and check it out!  It’s my first fearture!



The Front, Back, and inside pockets are made from a Beatles t-shirt, with a felt cutout of each member of the band. The side panel is made from left over tapestry and the lining also. But what’s interesting about the lining is that in every yellow stripe is lifted by some sort of filler, so when you run your hand over it, it feels like small mountains =)

And it’s complete with brown straps, and of course it’s fully interfaced for extra stability, even though the inside lining is pretty strong and could stand on it’s own without it.

Each product is made from second hand clothing and is completely one of a kind, I couldn’t duplicate any of these bags even if I wanted too!  It’s my way of going green and staying in style.

I have been aware of the Jack Spade brand for a long time. I just never really warmed up to it for some reason. Maybe cause I lost some style sensibility after being in a college bubble for four years (I wore jeans and a T-shirt to class). Maybe cause I already had a duffel bag in Louis Vuitton and Gucci. Very sturdy, this tote effortlessly balanced a stash of Japanese magazines (my primary in-flight entertainment) on my shoulder.

My sister and I are freaks, and after Thanksgiving dinner last week, we went to Michael’s to take advantage of their 40% off pre-Black Friday deal (our cousin and aunt came too — at least the crafting freak flag is hereditary).

The most beautiful antique canvas salvaged from a turn of the century apple harvesting sack has been transformed into a durable, everyday tote bag.

The material used to construct this bag is over 100 years old but still in the most wonderful condition. Printing from the original bag (the owner's name, his farm, and the town where the farm was located) has been incorporated into this bag to highlight the unique nature of the material. Any discoloration of the fabric is the result of many years of natural wear and aging.

Fully lined with cream colored cotton, this medium tote would be perfect for carrying everything you need during the day – a laptop, library books, groceries, etc. It also makes a wonderful weekend bag! Two good-sized inside pockets can easily hold a wallet, ipod, keys, camera.

Handles and buckle are constructed out of a beautiful, soft leather that was salvaged from a Swiss military backpack from approximately 1930. The hardware comes from the same Swiss backpack.

Tote measures approximately 19 inches wide, 14 inches tall, 4.5 inches deep.
