The “Fourth Screen” market is a sector of the technology industry that includes digital photo frames, and Internet appliances. A new ABI Research study called Connected Home Devices (Fourth Screen) takes a look at this market and what it will look like for remainder of this year up until 2014, covering the geographic areas of North America, Asia Pacific, European and RoW.

Out of the fourth screen market the fastest-growing device type is the media phone. Media phones are expected to generate a market value above US$5 billion by 2014. In 2014 alone, it is expected that 30 million media phones will be shipped. That’s pretty good growth considering the first media phones only began to show up late last year in the U.S.

Get ready for your Pre-Crime units and point your phone in the direction of the police station, it will surely take you there so you can make an arrest!

The CellScope project focuses on the development of a modular, high-magnification microscope attachment for cell phones. Due to its portability, affordability and functionality, the CellScope will enable health workers in remote areas to take high-resolution images of a patient’s blood cells using the mobile phone’s camera, and then transmit the photos to experts at medical centers. This device can reduce both the cost and time of performing critical disease diagnoses, as well as provide early warning of outbreaks in poverty-stricken regions in the world.

The Cellscope is designed to help the 247 million cases of malaria in 2006 and more than 9 million new cases of tuberculosis in 2007, with African countries bearing most of the burden in both cases. The Cellscope, with a simple attachment that clips onto the back of an ordinary camera phone and turns it into a portable and easy-to-use microscope capable of visualizing single-celled pathogens like malaria parasites or tuberculosis bacteria—no laboratory required.

CellScope users will be able to take diagnostic images of blood or sputum samples and then either send them off for further analysis using the phone’s wireless connectivity, or analyze them independently using image-analysis software that could be installed on the cell phone. In addition to being more portable, the CellScope may prove to be more valuable for diagnosis than basic compound microscopes. That’s because the device is capable of fluorescence microscopy, which produces images that are much easier for a layperson to decipher.

The United States Marine Corps has decided to immediately and unilaterally ban all social networking sites from its network. This is a  first move in a complete reassessment of the way the Pentagon and troops are engaging with an increasingly open web.

This ban will commence immediatly and goes after Facebook and Twitter and will last for a minimum one year. “These internet sites in general are a proven haven for malicious actors and content and are particularly high-risk due to information exposure, user generated content and targeting by adversaries,” the Marine Corps said in a statement.

Andy Sernovitz, the chief executive of the Blog Council, has said “the ban on social media was a bad idea, and bound to fail. You’ve got 5,000 people on an aircraft carrier, mostly 20-year-olds, who are stuck at sea for five months with no contact with friends or family,” Sernovitz said. “Getting an occasional e-mail is not enough when the baby pictures are on Facebook. This is like telling the troops in 1942 there would be no more letters from home,” Sernovitz said. “If you ban social media, you guarantee it goes underground and you increase the security risk.”

Good job USMC and Pentegon. Instead of figuring out way for the soldiers fighting in your wars to communicate with their family more effectively, you idiots decide to completely cut them off from everything that matters, family. What a morale booster! FAIL!

The lucky fellows over at The Inquirer were able to get their hands on what is supposed to be Windows Mobile 6.5 in it’s (almost) final version. The version looks very similar to AT&T Warhawk phone that was found over at WMPowerUser, see the image below. A good portion of the video ais devoted to My Phone syncing and QR codes. The UI seems to be nice, but A LOT slower than the TouchWiz we’ve seen in the past. If HTC has any say, there is a good chance they are already building a UI interface for 6.5. By the time that comes out, WinMo 7.0 will be ready for launch. With so many exciting phones coming out here shortly, are consumers going to flock to a tired old OS like Windows Mobile? De HTC Touch Diamond II is zoals de naam al zegt de opvolger van de Touch Diamond;. Een telefoon die al velen veel gebruiksgemak heeft gegeven. Met name het 3D-TouchFlo bedieningspaneel maakt de telefoon zeer gemakkelijk te besturen. Het enige echte nadeel aan de Touch Diamond was dat de achterkant niet vlak was, waardoor je hem niet makkelijk op zijn rug op tafel kon leggen. Dat probleem is verholpen in de 2e versie van dit toestel.

Pluspunt van de Touch Diamond II is vele mogelijkheden om snel verbinding te leggen met andere mobiele telefoons en met het internet. De Touch Diamond II is een quad-band toestel met bluetooth 2.0 (met A2DP) en WiFi ondersteuning. De 3G ondersteuning geeft je ook zonder WiFi-spot de mogelijkheid snel te kunnen internetten. Gebruikers geven slechts één nadeel: de batterij schijnt snel leeg te gaan bij langdurig gebruik van de GPS functie. Het echte navigatiesysteem zal dit toestel dus niet gaan vervangen. Nearly all HTC smartphones running Windows Mobile 6 and 6.1 are affected by a bug in the OBEX bluetooth driver that may give an attacker access to private folders like contacts, email, and pictures. Since the flaw in the HTC obexfile.dll driver, this bug only affects HTC phones.

HTC has issued a hotfix for this flaw but models other than the Touch Pro, Touch Diamond, and Touch HD may still be affected. Until a hotfix issued for your particular model, disabling Bluetooth altogether should mitigate the vulnerability.

Since the HTC Touch Diamond launched we have been conducting a long term test by using the phone every day. In short, we love this phone.

Available for free on most contracts with Orange this is a serious competitor to the iPhone and surprisingly it’s quite a bit smaller and 23 grams lighter too.

Connectivity on the HTC Touch Diamond is much more advanced than the iPhone with 7.2Mb/s HSDPA. Also included is an FM radio, WiFi and GPS (we thought a Micro SD slot would be useful to store maps without eating into the main phones memory, most GPS devices have this).

As you can see from the image the phone looks great and has a very minimalist appearance. The screen looks fantastic with colour rendering and sharpness a huge improvement on previous HTC Touch handsets we’ve seen. We loved the TouchFlo 3D control interface which brings a much more interactive method of browsing the menu than normal phones. Graphically the icons and menu screens are simply stunning.

Software wise it runs Windows Mobile Professional 6.1 which offers an excellent user experience.

Mittlerweile habe ich das Handy seit ein paar Tagen im Gebrauch. Der grösste Kritikpunkt ist ganz klar der Akku.
Wenn man alle 5 Minuten automatisch die E-Mails checkt, ist der Akku innert einem Tag leer. Da ich nur eine 50MB Flat habe, habe ich das automatische Überprüfen gestoppt, denn ich hab nur noch 11MB für den Rest des Monats
Das Einrichten ging sehr flott von der Hand, ich habe nur die Gmail-E-Mail-Adresse und das PW angeben müssen, alles andere wurde wie von Zauberhand durch das Handy erledigt, super Sache.

Das GPS reagiert ziemlich schnell, ich habe mir dazu eine Software installiert mit der man die Geschwindigkeit sehr gut dargestellt bekommt und zudem noch die g-Beschleunigung. Da das Handy bei mir im Auto aber nicht waagrecht ist, funktioniert das mit der g-Beschleunigung nicht richtig. Die Tachofunktion werde ich aber vermissen wenn ich das Handy wieder abgeben muss
SMS konnte ich mit dem Nokia 5800 viel schneller schreiben, aber vielleicht hab ich einfach den Dreh noch nicht so raus.

Ich habe gerade die Möglichkeit das Touch Diamond zu testen.
Ich weiss, eigentlich ist ja schon der Nachfolger, das Touch Diamond 2 (TD2), erhältlich. Die ersten Geräte wurden gestern per Post von den Bestellern in Empfang genommen. Allerdings hat sich erst jetzt die Chance ergeben dass ich ein Touch Diamond (TD) zum testen bekomme.

Eigentlich ist das Touch Diamond 2 der Favorit für mein nächstes Handy, aber ich warte lieber noch ein bisschen das Geschehen (und die Preisgestaltung der Swisscom…) ab.

HTC Touch Diamond does justice to its name and introduces some wonderful and unique features. This high end gadget retains the dimensions of 102mm x 51mm x 11.4mm with the overall weight of 110 grams. This mobile phone augments the factor of communication and comfort of users in real sense.

A couple of days back, I got my first Apple product, iPod Touch 2G. After playing with the free apps there in the appstore, I found that in order to install some really awesome apps that there for the iPhone/iPod Touch, one needs to jailbreak his device.

Being a pro Windows Mobile user (check my website Gadgetmix.com and Windowsphonemix.com), I was way too used to the openess and freedom of the Windows Mobile OS. In WM, you can do anything you want and you can access anything you want.

In iPod Touch, everything feels so closed.

• You cannot modify OS files.
• Heck, you do not even know where they are.
• You have no freedom what to store where

True, Apple made it simple for the dumb user because they do not care what is being stored where. Now, I understand why the Windows  users make fun of the Apple platform. It is such a  CLOSED environment. Although I’ve never used a Mac and don’t even plan to use it, I’ve heard it is too a closed OS, where the users have no idea of what is going in the background.

From the past 2 days, I am still searching for an all-in-one file explorer (like the one found on Windows Mobile, Resco File Explorer), which would provide me encryption, zip file support, sorting files, viewing of simple txt files in a single package.

Finally, Experia is landed in Korea. One of the best smartphone developed by Sony Ericsson. Sony Ericsson opened their local office to launch it to Korean market and many of members hired from Sony Korea. It¡¯s good, since Sony Korea also squeeze their size of human resources in Korea by recent their HQ¡¯s situation.

Xperia is 2nd smartphone which came from overseas in 2009. HTC just launched their year old model ¡°Touch Diamond¡¯ a week ago. What are bed move from HTC or SKT mobile phone network provider who brings those phones from overseas, because, HTC just released next model of Touch Diamond at the MWC 2009.

Korean market was not a target market to those major mobile phone manufacturers until last year by WiPi restriction. But, this restriction going to be terminated from April, which great time to entering Korean market with their old smartphones since Smartphone market in Korea just generated and got consumers attention too. Big deal is there isn¡¯t many competitors even Korea has Samsung, LG and Pantech which known as giant mobile phone manufacturers in the world. However, they didn¡¯t really focused smartphones in Korea.

Samsung only released Blackjack, M470, Mirage and T-Omnia models in last 3 years and finally get some good feedbacks from market by T-Omnia. LG just joined this smartphone competition with mid-end model LG-KU2000 (Known as incite).

KTF another mobile phone network provider in Korea also planning to import iPhone (for years now¡¦).

Funny part is Korea always known as paradise of IT products especially portable IT gadgets lately but in Smartphone industry I have to say we are really get behind like a year at least.

All the overseas models which coming into Korea recently or ready to is year old or next model already been introduced from recent exhibitions. This is situation that I hate to be describe but, it¡¯s true and I guess those network providers let this happens to be come. They keep try to avoid WiFi features from those mobile phones and try to lack the network with their one infra¡¯s all the time. They start to change their mind after iPhone hit the markets and customer start to asking about the iPhone and smartphone it is.

Now, MID also start to picking up from customers in Korea and Smartphones also introducing at similar time frame here. What is the difference between those devices¡¦? I guess it will be the size of LCD and Operating Systems. Korean MID¡¯s based on X486 like WinXP but Smartphones are various ones. Let¡¯s see which device going to be live out in 2010.

Personally, smartphones will be going down in Korea or mixed with high-end feature phones in Korea and MIDs will take over that market in Korea.

“Better late than never,” so they say. Perhaps — but with Sprint’s version of this in the rear view mirror for half a year now, just how relevant is a Touch Diamond on Verizon these days? Odds are we’ll find out next month — or, at least, that’s where the latest rumors have it lined up for launch — but in the meantime, we’ve got one floating around in the wilds looking pretty much like any other Touch Diamond you’ve seen in the past. Like its Touch Pro, it seems Verizon went ahead and nerfed the Diamond’s memory down to 128MB of RAM and 256MB of ROM (why is anybody’s guess), which only serves to reinforce our concerns that this thing is being launched months too late. We love you HTC, seriously — but with the Omnia at $99 on contract right now, we’re not exactly seeing the line starting to form at 8PM the night before release, if you know what we’re saying.

Ungewöhnlich das so schnell ein neues kommt. Hoffentlich funktioniert dann bei mir das hinzufügen eines Empfängers  zu einer SMS nun ohne Absturz. Wie gut das ich das letzte mal kaum Software installiert habe.

basically, Samsung and HTC came out with improved versions of their hot selling WM6 phones.
Enter the Omnia HD and Touch Diamond2!

from what i see, they come with better camera resolutions.
omnia HD comes with 8MP, and Diamond2 comes with 5MP.
and they look much better in terms of designs than their predecessors.

speaking of WM6 phones, SE has a really nice phone up.
it’s called the idou and the one by far, with the highest camera resolution for a phone in singapore.
