Sometimes it’s not the big articles that hide great stuff. On Heise newsticker Ulrike Kuhlmann wrote a short notice about “technology to touch”, saying that T-Mobile shows a big, big touchscreen wall screen in Berlin at the IFA fair (consumer electronics show). Great toy for public places, fairs, company halls etc.

After the blogger panel with Robert Scoble I walked to the T-Mobile hall and had the opportunity to talk to Hans-Joachim Stolzmann, the head behind the touch wall screen from the “Mediafaktur” q-bus. They use publicly available software, setup infrared cameras behind the nine 2 meter wide and 1.5 meter high glasses, several beamer and a Mac Pro for computing.

Manchmal sind es die kleinen Nachrichten, hinter denen sich Großes verbirgt, Ulrike Kuhlmann, Monitor-Expertin der c’t, hat am Freitag in einer Ein-Absatz-Meldung auf dem Heise-Newsticker auf eine 15 Meter breite Touchscreen-Wand hingewiesen. Da ich am Samstag ja zum Blogger-Plenum mit Robert Scoble, Robert Basic und Thomas Knüwer wollte, passte das hervorragend in meinen Besuchsplan.

Zum Glück war gerade Hans-Joachim Stolzmann von der “Mediafaktur” q-bus vor Ort, der mir ein wenig zu der Technologie und dem Aufbau erzählen konnte. Ich habe das Video hier zusammengefasst (wmv-Datei).

In Kürze: Mehrere Infrarotkameras hinter den neun 2 Meter breiten und eineinhalb Meter hohen Glasscheiben, Tracking-Software, Rendering, Beamer und ein Mac Pro.

18 Meter Touchscreen Wall

En la presentación, Ballmer y Gates recalcaron las revolucionarias funciones del interfaz sensible al tacto que serán incorporadas en el próximo sistema operativo de Microsoft, que relevará a Windows Vista en 2010.

A juzgar por las imágenes distribuidas, la pantalla sensible al tacto es un capítulo aparte, aunque en realidad no se trata de una función nueva en el contexto de Windows. Tablet PC ha tenido por años tales características.

Sin embargo, todo indica que Microsoft asignará mucha más relevancia a este tipo de interfaz, especialmente debido a que ha avanzado considerablemente en el desarrollo de su tecnología de cursor Surface y su superficie sensible Touch Wall.

Windows 7 incorporará cuantiosas novedades relacionadas con Surface y Touch Wall. Algunas de ellas son:

1. Función de efecto “genio de la lámpara” (inicio de programas mediante grandes símbolos situados en la base del monitor.

2. Programa de dibujo Paint, con función “multi-touch”, que permite dibujar con todos los dedos.

3. Programa de piano donde es posible tocar el piano directamente en la pantalla.

4. Programa avanzado de navegación/mapa que recoge datos directamente desde Microsoft Live Maps y Microsoft Virtual Earth.

Na redovnom godišnjem sastanku rukovodilaca velikih američkih tehnoloških kompanija, koji je održan u sedištu kompanije Microsoft u Redmondu, Microsoft je predstavio novi prototip računara budućnosti pod nazivom TouchWall.

Zvanično, TouchWall je predstavljen kao vertikalni ekran osetljiv na dodir, koji radi bez spoljnih kablova i miša, zahvaljujući tome što laserski i infracrveni senzori reaguju na dodir prsta korisnika. Dokumenti, fotografije ili video datoteke jednostavno se pomeraju rukama po ekranu, a omogućene su i razne operacije sa slikama, uključujući i okretanje, prikaz iz različitih uglova i zumiranje.

TouchWall pokreće softver Plex koji se oslanja na Vistinu platformu. Tokom prezentacije korišćen je običan računar sa Vistom odnosno Plexom, 120 x 180 cm širok pleksiglas kao ekran, pozadinski projektor, infracrvena kamera i tri infracrvena lasera. S obzirom da je tek reč o prototipu vertikalnog računara, funkcionalnost je došla do karakteristika “pametne” prezentacione table i tu stala. Medjutim, sigurni smo da se neće tu i zadržati.

Gates je obećao da TouchWall neće zahtevati velika ulaganja, odnosno da njegova upotreba neće biti skupa.

pues bastantes años antes de lo que manejan en esa pelicula, no es descabellado pensar que ya tenemos esa clase de tecnologia a nuestro alcance, y si, si bien es cierto que todavia no puedo ir yo a comprarme dos de estas en office depot, es solo cuestion de tiempo para que las computadoras qeu ya utilizamos vayan integrando poco a poco, y si, soy un friki pero me entusiasma el mundo de posibilidades que tendremos de manejar nuestros programas comunes (photoshop, illustrator, flash) con las manos *.* jaja (adios maldito mouse, nunca nos entendimos!), pero en fin, microsoft presento su touch wall, y hace unos meses estaba en boca de todos el microsoft surface, eh aqui unos videitos de estas dos tecnologias:

During his last Microsoft CEO Summit Bill Gates pulled of a Steve Jobs’s like presentation (minus the presentation skills – notice how he has his back to the audience all the time) and introduced Microsoft’s Touch Wall, a huge interactive screen that let’s you browse through vast amounts of information by just using a huge screen with cameras and your hands as an input device. It’s like the iPhone on steroids! Although still in development this might be the future of corporate and educational presentations. To watch Bill Gates’ presentation, follow this link.

Microsoft has announced Touch Wall, Engadget reports, a touchable electronic device mounted on a wall. It will be a great piece of hardware for web applications like Google Maps. It looks like it’s going to be used for the public and not private. It looks pretty neat, but is it worth the money? I say no, it’s a big piece of flash that costs too much for too little. Microsoft isn’t making the right choices so far. Vista is a failure, they’re trying to copy Apple with their ’simplicity’ with the new Office Suite, the Zune, and this new TouchWall that they just announced, and quite frankly, it’s not doing too well. Well that’s my take on it, for now goodbye.
