Pink tourmaline cabochons are so appealing to me. Beautiful jelly colors, with inclusions like tiny mysteries frozen inside. So different from their faceted tourmaline counterparts; gentle and charmingly winsome to their faceted sisters’ flash and fire.

This is a 12 x 9 mm stone, and a faceted stone of this size might be a bit much, don’t you think?

A large, faceted stone might only be dragged out of the jewelry box for the dressiest of dress-ups, but a large cab has a quiet beauty easily paired with everything from jeans to silk blouses. Worn all the time, it can become a signature piece.

I can’t quite decide what to call this color, as every change in light brings out a different tone.

Hi Guys and Dolls. I know I said I’d have some more information on the flat iron, but really any information about tourmaline flat irons can be found on google, yahoo, dogpile, bing, whatever your search engine of choice is , and more information on this one in particular can be found at Beautychoice.com. I’m sorry I’m not providing some additional info for your guys, but really I’m no expert, so i’d need to do quite a bit of research, and I just started a new job, so I’m really tired. I know it sounds like excuses, but cut me some slack on this one, eh?

Tourmaline occurs in many colours and also in combinations of two or three different colours. The colours can be at different ends of the crystal or together in the heart of it. Tourmaline with a pink centre and a green border is known as Watermelon Tourmaline.

Another interesting fact is that an electrical charge can be induced in some Tourmaline crystals and this effect has found many uses in pressure measuring equipment and other scientific applications.  Tourmaline was subsequently used in the production of pressure sensitive gauges for submarine instrumentation and other wartime equipment. The pressure gauges that measured the power of the first atomic bomb blasts were made with slices of Tourmaline.

Tourmaline can be easily confused with many other gemstones and this has in the past caused much confusion. Many gemstones in the Russian Crown jewels from the 17th Century once thought to be Rubies are in fact Tourmalines.

In South America Green Tourmaline is still referred to as the ‘Brazilian Emerald’. The exact quantity of green stones which were mined in the early days of the Portuguese colonization and sent to Portugal as Emeralds will probably never really be known.

Tourmaline was a prized gemstone throughout history. In particular the Dowager Empress of China who was the last Empress of China loved it so much that she bought enormous quantities when a new mine opened in California. It was used for carving purposes and for fashioning toggles or buttons on the jackets worn by the royal court and by other wealthy individuals.

Tourmaline is said by healers to enhance one’s understanding, increase self-confidence and amplify one’s psychic energies and aid concentration and communication. It is also believed to neutralize negative energies and dispel fear and grief. Tourmaline can also aid relaxation of both mind and body as well as being able to help with the treatment of many different conditions and diseases including anxiety, blood poisoning, arthritis and heart disease.

Tourmaline has been found throughout history in Africa, the Ural Mountains of Russia and other European locations. Some of the most exciting finds have been in North and South America. Beautiful gemstones were discovered early in the 19th century in the United States and in 1972 a mine in Maine established itself as one of the largest finds on record ever. For a brief period it became a world source for superior quality red and green Tourmaline.

The first Pink Tourmaline was found in the 1860’s in San Diego. Today the largest mines are in the Minas Gerais state of Brazil. It is also mined in Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, Mozambique, Myanmar, Russia, Namibia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Tourmaline and Opal are the birthstones for October. Tourmaline is also the anniversary gemstone for the 8th year of marriage. It is graded 7 to 7.5 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness

Tourmaline Tales

Some deep, rich colors of tourmaline are achieved with extra effort from man. Through the use of irradiation and/or heat, we have a more plentiful selection of deep pinks, reds, and even yellow. There’s no residual radiation to be wary of – if you are purchasing from a knowledgeable jeweler. The colors are stable; however, they could fade if exposed to heat.

Why would you expose them to heat? It could be a simple ring sizing. Your jeweler should caution you before any repairs are made – and know if the gemstone can be protected from the heat, or else removed from the setting and reset after the repairs are made.

Have your jeweler explain the proper care of any gemstone you purchase. There’s a tale for every one of them. Have a great weekend…   Dii

Carla and Jenny agreed with me without even knowing they were doing so. Which is my favorite kind of agreeing with me. It allows me to sit back and pretend I thought of things first, and say, with an air of self-satisfaction, “Ah, yes. That is exactly what I already said, and now I see that everyone agrees with me.” Y’all should try it. But I really was feeling the tourmaline pendant was very Teletubby, very Dipsy-esque. That’s exactly what I thought it looked like. I promise. Seriously. No, really.

Before I posted about the pendant, I told the boys I thought it looked like a Teletubby. Having said that, of course they saw the resemblance, and so I stopped offering that idea up for consideration; I wanted to see if anyone else saw the similarity without prompting.

As I spoke to my friends throughout the day, I asked if they would take a look and tell me what they thought.

“Why,” they all asked, ” you’re not sure if you like it?”

“I like it, ” I’d say, “but once I shot it and looked at the images….well, now it reminds me of something else, and I can’t get it out of my head. Go look?”

“Ooooh,” they’d say, as if my concern was one common to me, “does it look phallic?”

No, it doesn’t look phallic. I don’t make phallic jewelry! At least not under my real name. I use my Mom’s.

On Friday night I took the pendant with me to Riley’s soccer practice. Here, none of my soccer-parent friends mentioned phalluses before seeing it. Only afterwards.

“If you take off the granules,” Bob said, “then it would look just like a penis!”

Another parent added, helpfully, “And if you put another tourmaline up top it would really look like…… that.”

The adults snickered like twelve year olds, and looked at me with a mixture of admiration and amusement: here is a woman obsessed with sex.

My friends, every single one of them married or living with long-time partners, seem to have penis on the brain; seem to think that I, as the only single one among them, must be oversexed and overly focused upon penises. And as they point their penis-pointing fingers at me, I think we all need to ask ourselves, “Who owns this problem?”

Tourmaline, Titanium, Ionic what does it mean?!

Flat iron, hair dryer, and curling iron technology terms have gone through the roof! “This dryer has ionpialia technology” or “Get the latest in timonia torque” is what it all sounds to me. Gibberish! So I did a quick investigation of these hair appliance terms to help expose the true meaning! Guess what I found – this stuff really means something and can do wonders for your hair.

What is Tourmaline and why is it important in a styling product?
Tourmaline is a precious gemstone. When heated, it naturally releases negative ions and far-infrared heat, both of which benefit hair by reducing static and frizz to increase shine. Far-infrared heat is gentle and eliminates potential heat damage to hair. This is definitely good!

What is Titanium and why is it important in a styling product?
Titanium is a unique metal, as strong as steel but 40% lighter! It’s the smoothest surface available in a styling tool, retains higher heat longer and distributes temperatures consistently across surfaces. The end result is less styling time and healthier hair. I have been using a titianium plate flat iron and think it is definitely better than its ceramic counterpart. Quicker styling time, higher heat, and a very smooth surface.

What is Ionic and why is it important in a styling product?
Ions close the hair cuticle and reduce the static electricity that dulls hair and causes fly-away frizzies. During dry winter months this is key! Ions also break water molecules into tiny, micronized clusters for deeper moisture penetration into hair, and hold the moisture longer for silkier and shinier hair.

Buried Treasures

Gary Freeman aims his flashlight at the cavern wall, illuminating a cavity big enough to hold a child playing hide-and-seek. A yellowish prism angling out of the hollow’s floor is briefly but excitingly disorienting. That quartz crystal was locked in this rocky cell for three hundred million years, unseen by man until now. It’s as if we’re gazing through a portal to the past.

Freeman and I are perched atop a mound of fresh blast debris deep inside Mount Mica, the United States’ oldest gemstone mine, located about a mile east of the western Maine village of Paris Hill. We walked here by way of a two hundred-foot tunnel dimly lit by lights strung along a sloping floor of parchment-colored stone and glinting mica. The air is cool and damp. Overhead, ninety feet of schist lies between us and sunlight. The daunting layer of metamorphic rock is the reason Freeman abandoned quarrying in favor of burrowing into the hill to find the tourmaline and other rare minerals that unfailingly give him “a rush” each time he chips into one of the rockbound jewelry boxes rockhounds call “pockets.” The one that has our interest now is the latest of scores that Freeman, 61, has exposed since he bought the mine in 2003.

By Mount Mica standards, the cavity is a dud. It yields only a tiny bit of green tourmaline, and that prehistoric hunk of quartz is, Freeman says, “pretty beat up,” not worth the effort required to extract it.

That’s the way it goes sometimes. “It’s hard to find a pocket,” explains Freeman, wearing a hard hat and a heavy-duty back brace buckled over dirty jeans, “and harder still to find one with good material in it, but we haven’t had a dull day here yet. We don’t always find great gems, but we always find something to keep us interested. At Mount Mica, you don’t have to be smart. You just have to dig up rocks.”

Freeman is being modest. A few years ago, Mount Mica was believed by some to have been mined out. Under Freeman’s direction, it is giving up world-class green, blue, and pink tourmaline crystals that are as good, and often better, than any found here in the past. Freeman has found unusual blue apatites, giant smoky quartz crystals, and extremely rare crystallized pink quartz reminiscent of a splendid Brazilian specimen that made news forty years ago. The owner with his wife, Mary Freeman, of a Florida-based clinical laboratory instrumentation company, Gary Freeman spends $150,000 a year, “plus or minus,” on his avocation, which he pursues with the discipline of a shrewd businessman, except that he keeps much of the best product for himself.

“Most of us are amazed by Gary’s consistent success,” says Woodrow Thompson, a mineralogy specialist at the Maine Geological Survey. “He’s found pocket after pocket. He is very systematic and thorough. He’s going end to end and top to bottom and has a far more serious gem-mining operation than anyone has done in the past. He’s also very lucky.”

Tourmaline and Seaglass-Updated

I went into my studio to work on the square ruby, and by mistake I made other things, instead. This happens a lot. I find if I just stay in my studio long enough, most of my ideas come to fruition…..at some point.

Of the pieces I made this week, first up for show and tell is this seaglass and tourmaline pendant.

I picked up this tourmaline early this year, and I’ve been sitting on it while I mulled a setting which would really make it sing.

Tourmaline has become one of my favorite go-to stones; it comes in a wide range of colors, and is a tough 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale. While it’s pricey, it’s affordably pricey, with good stones in reach for most buyers.

I’ve paired the deep forest green tourmaline with a cool, frosty piece of Maine seaglass and rubbed the gold to a soft, satin finish.    The end result? Medieval-gone-contemporary-casual chic.

Update:

It occurred to me that this pendant looks like something familiar. I’m not going to tell you what it reminds me of, because then you’ll see it, too.

What if I took all the granules off, except for the one on the bail? Thoughts?

Babyliss Hair Appliances - Irons, Dryers and More.

I figured to start this blog about my favorite hair appliance company I would do an overview of what Babyliss is and what they sell and then where you can buy Babyliss on sale as they are just a bit out of my price range on the normal salon sites and retail sites. Soo anyways, I suffered from hair that did not want to style, it was frizzy and always got competely out of hand.

It does get curly but more wavy if anything, which sounds nice, but it also frizzes like crazy and I needed a way to help keep t under control. I do like to have straight hair a lot of the time, however my hair never wanted to stay that way. I don’t have a ton of money so although it would have been nice to be able to go to a salon, unfortunately I had to keep on going by myself. I tried all kinds of cheap straighteners and dryers and products from CVS and other stores and sure, it would take a while but I could get straight hair, however it never held all day. I did however find a good hairspray called Sebsatian at CVS which I enjoyed a lot and still use, except I buy it on other sites now becuase you can get it cheaper.

Anyways, I got tired of products that took forever to use and completely tired of products that would break, would straighten my hair but also leave it seriously damaged and that just wasn’t ok with me. I finally said screw it and went to a salon and asked what am I doing wrong. They walked me through a couple of brands of hair appliances like CHI and Babyliss as well as products to repair damage and when I was ready to buy them, they also showed me the price. My mouth dropped and I lost it. Walking out of there I was depressed that they had what I needed but I couldn’t afford $200 hair dryers and $200 irons, even though I spend close to that on the crap convenience store ones, but I also wrote down the list of products that the stylist recommended.

When I got home I started searching Google for these products and luckily found a store called hair care discounters and to my surprise they had all of the products that the stylist had shown me and they were not really in my price range but they were seriously marked down about half the retail cost so I said it is time to buy them and see if they work.

When I finnaly got my products in the mail a few days later I quickly unwrapped my Babyliss Pro Nano Titanium 1 1/4″ flat hair iron, My Babyliss Tourmaline Hairdryer and because I did actually have a little more money I also bought a set of their Hairsetters, the cheaper Babyliss Jumbo Ceramic Hairsetter Rollers of course and immediately was excited to try them. However I had already done my hair that moring so I wasn’t about to damage it more by going twice in one day so I help off until the next morning.

So when I woke up, I washed my hair, put in a repair treatment and then plugged in my new Babyliss Appliances to heat up while I dried my hair and started my make up.

Luckily hair dryers don’t need to heat up so that one I plugged in and started to go right away, because who wants to try putting on make up with wet hair when it will smear your makeup and face. As I began using this dryer I noticed that the heat felt a little bit different and I also noticed it working on my hair to dry it but when it was drying it it didn’t feel like it was damaging my hair any more. I know that no tools will not damage your hair, but this felt better on my hair than most other products so it was probably my imagination, but one thing I did see when my hair was just about dry, no frizz. Now I know frizz comes later normally but my hair really sucked.

While I was drying my hair with my new Babyliss Tourmaline hair dryer, I did actually notice something else kind of shocking, my flat iron had already heated up, this was crazy since my old irons took forever to heat to 300 and since I think this one goes to 450 or something I thought it would be longer. Anyways I was kind of shocked but also excited because so far the Babyliss products were working. I used the hair iron and started to straighten my hair with it section by section. I wish I had taken pictures that day for this blog because it was unbelievable how well this iron worked and after just two passes when I normally needed 4 or 5 passes to get my hair the way I like it I only did half my hair and looked at the mirror and it was amazing how great my new straight hair looked. Again it was probably my imagination, but my hair actually looked healthier too…or maybe it did because I was using a better product.

Although I didn’t use the jumbo hairsetters that day because I just wanted straight hair, I did look online again and try to find out why these products worked better than the ones I had been using. I went to Wikipedia and read about everything and the reasons I think that these products worked better for my hair are that the Tourmaline Gemstones in the hair dryer actually have ions or something that help to prevent frizz and capture infrared heat and then use that to also help your hair somehow helping to get rid of my frizz and do less damage to my hair. The iron I bought worked because I found out about heat differences (which I still dont completely understand) and because the new hair iron I was using had ceramic plates and the shapes of them not only spread the heat more evenly but actually worked with my hair and distributed the heat better to my hair so it would do less damage and let me style with less passes.   What I loved even more was that it heated seriously fast and cooled down in no time at all.

I love Babyliss and am seriously lucky that I not only found where I can buy Babyliss cheap and be able to now treat my hair better and create styles that can hold.

The company has been in business since 1959 and continues to thrive. Because they make the product lines like Babyliss and Rusk that I love and because they sell them at sites like hair care discounters I know they will be in business for a long time,,,,as long as people want and continue to buy and use quality products to treat their hair better.
