I love B/W. It inspired from Ansel Adam’s work when he still alive and lived at Yosemite National Park. Actually I want this scene as a color scene, but after I think a bit, I convert them into B/W with couple Photoshop manipulation. This scene is taken from my Office (B&G Tower) around 1 PM. It took that picture before I went to hunting photo. Hope you enjoy it! Chao.

After an epic 45 hour punctuated session of gaming, my journey in Dragon Age has come to an end … for now. It was a bitter-sweet ending — the Archdemon was slain (this surely can’t be a spoiler if you were paying any attention at all), life goes on, my fellowship of NPC companions split up and everyone went their separate ways. I think I did right by them, mostly, but at the end it was just me and my faithful dog, Bitey, and the long open road.

Was my character still the same self-centred but basically well-meaning casteless Carta bruiser that was introduced in the dwarf commoner origin? I think so, but she’d changed. She’d seen the world above, faced horrors underground, faced her inner demons on a religious pilgrimage, and locked horns with some hard bitten political mavens in the Landsmeet. And killed lots of darkspawn, too. A story where the characters have room to change and grow is a good story. My Dragon Age story could easily have been told from the perspective of any one of the companions too, because they also changed and grew and faced their own inner demons.

I enjoyed reading how other peoples’ stories ended in an rpg.net thread setup for the purpose (link is full of spoilers, you’ve been warned). Because rpg.net was originally a community of pen and paper roleplayers, you’ll see a lot of people describe how they RPed their characters, why they made decisions IC, and where that led.

And although there are good endings and less good endings (depending on your point of view), I don’t get the feeling that this is a game that you win or lose. Either way, you have your own story. I’ve also felt strongly while playing Dragon Age that I wanted to talk to people about how their stories were going, what choices they made, and to compare experiences. Even though it’s a single player game, it was an experience I very much wanted to share.

And now, I’m already planning on playing through it again:

I want to try playing on a harder mode now that I understand the mechanics more fully.

I want to play through as different origins and races.

I want to learn more about the lore by playing through the game differently. How does Orzammar treat non-dwarves? Does the Landsmeet treat you differently if you are a human noble?

I want to tinker around with the storyline by trying different options and seeing what happens.

I want to get to know different companions. I only had time to strike up in depth relationships with a handful of them.

My dwarf girl was not the romantic type. (I laughed at Zevran and told him to get lost when he called me a sex goddess.) I’d like to play a more romantic type and see how some of those play out.

I’d like to do more of the sidequests and dragon slaying. In my play through, I decided that stopping the Blight was my first priority so I didn’t want to waste too much time or take too many risks outside hat.

I want to try some of the DLC content – I could do that on my main character but it might be more storywise to run through it on a second one.

So there’s plenty of incentive to keep playing the game, although I think I’ll take a break first. One thing I do note though – I have this notion of ‘playing around with the story’. I’ll be able to go back in and try out some ‘what if’s. There’s no other media than games in which you can approach a story in that way. To rewind and try different choices or different approaches and then see what happens. You can’t do that with a book (barring game books) or a film.

The experience players have with the Dragon Age story isn’t just of going through cut scenes and railroaded platform or combat sequences. You engage with the actual story as a gamer. Your choices drive it, your roleplaying decisions guide it, and although you control the direction, you can’t always predict how the story will go because it drives you too. The story is the keystone of the game, and its emotional heart.

Is it limited? Yes, it’s only a computer game, and what you end up with are variations on a theme rather than radically, utterly different stories. But I think they are different enough and interesting enough to compel me to want to play with the possibilities given.

I dismiss the complaints about lack of originality. The best parts of the game are the less original sections, and all fantasy relies on using existing mythical threads to weave a story that appeals to people on a very instinctive level.

For example, the section where you search for the Ashes of Andraste is very clearly based on the Arthurian grail quest. There are monsters to fight, hardships, moral dilemmas, puzzles, revelations and a strong sense of religious pilgrimage. But even a story so well known as the quest for the grail feels fresh and different when you are experiencing it alongside your character. If the emotional core of the story is present and is appealing and FUN, it really doesn’t matter if it is original or not.

(Conversely, it’s easy to tell an unusual story in a way that’s confusing or fails to grab people.)

Issues and Pacing

I love Dragon Age but the game isn’t perfect. There are ways in which it could be streamlined and better presented, although I think the game does succeed totally in many ways.

It is a long game. Sections like the Mage Tower and the Deep Roads can drag, especially if you try to play them through in a single session. But it also simulates a long and difficult journey very well. The sense of ‘oh no, not another set of darkspawn’ is part of the story being told.

From a gameplay point of view, it’s open to discussion whether some segments are too drawn out. (It would be slicker to have decided what the optimal length of game session was and to design the sub-quests around that baseline.) But that decision is an artistic storytelling decision on pacing, not a gameplay one on ‘how many mobs should be in that pack to challenge the player?’

I enjoyed the sense of the long and drawn out journeys in my quests so I don’t have an issue with the pacing there. But as I say, that’s a subjective opinion, others may differ or might have wanted an option to let the game know that you wanted things sped up.

The end game doesn’t allow enough time to tie up loose ends emotionally with the rest of the NPC companions. If you’ve gotten very close to any of them, it would have been nice to have some extended conversation options on the night before the last battle, it would have given a better sense of closure. Tamarind discusses his story here (spoilers behind the link) and explains why he really needed to have words with Alistair … if the game had allowed it.

The DLC is handled awkwardly at the end. The problem here with the storytelling is that this game definitely has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The DLC should logistically happen in the middle while your character is out adventuring and before the final battle. But clearly players are going to finish the story and Bioware still wants to sell DLC to them. So after the final set of cut scenes and ‘this is what happened to your companions afterwards’, you’re left back in camp and told that for the purpose of ‘continuing your adventures’ you can assume you’re back in the midgame.

I don’t have the heart to really complain about this. I’m glad I had my neat ending and wouldn’t have wanted to skip that just to leave my character in a convenient spot storywise for DLC. A story that was designed at the start to have up to two years of optional but available DLC wouldn’t be able to have that neat ending, it would be more MMO like. Maybe in future games, they’ll have better ideas for how to make this gel more neatly.

Anyway, I’m back to Lothering with my new mage-in-search-of-a-husband. Instead of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, it’ll be like Pride and Prejudice with Darkspawn.

And thank you Bioware, for restoring my faith in storytelling in computer games.

Jesus Christ during his suffering in Gethsemane asked his apostles to “Watch and Pray…

Jesus Christ during his suffering in Gethsemane asked his apostles to “Watch and Pray…” with him, “that ye enter not into temptation” (KJV Matt. 26:41).

During the ratification process for the Constitution an author to the Daily Advertiser in September 24, 1787 offered the following:

Let difficulties, if any unhappily arise, be no longer laid to our charge –and let us all, who are friends to order and good government, in the language of the scriptural injunction, “watch and pray.” — Watch, and, with open front, manfully oppose every ambitious demagogue, however high in office, who may attempt to form combinations, with a wicked intent to destroy the labors of those distinguished worthies; and pray to the Governor of the world to avert, and finally disappoint there nefarious purposes. — If the change, which genius and patriotism has presented to us, as the most advisable to be received, should be rejected, and if (which God avert) such evil minded men should prevail, what is the alternative? Gorgon-headed anarchy, or a miserable aristocratic domination; all the wretchedness and wickedness of an aristrocracy, without a single particle of its dignity.

What are some things we need to watch for?

Representatives who don’t.
Representatives who line their pockets and base decisions on the interests of their party or a lobbyist rather than the concerns of their constituents.
Representatives who seek to destroy the work of those who chose to work and enrich themselves for those who do not wish to avail themselves of opportunities.
Representatives who manipulate an overly-complex tax code to help their friends gain positions of power.
Representatives who actively strive to destroy the fabric of society, even the family unit.
Representatives who undermine our security by weakening and demoralizing those who have chosen to protect us and the Constitution.
The list could go on and on.

The second part of that directive is to pray. I do not care if you pray to God, Allah, or any of the other host of deities worshiped by people in this country. I do not even care if you are an atheist. We need to be praying.
Praying for what?

Pray that our elected leaders will have the wisdom and guidance that they need to govern properly this country.
Pray that our representatives will remember those whom they have gotten their positions from.
Pray that the family can survive.
Pray that the efforts of those who have shed blood for the freedoms which we take for granted will not be in vain.
Pray that the nefarious efforts of wicked men will be thwarted.
Pray that true leaders and true patriots will arise from the masses to help lead us.
Pray for the men and women who everyday place themselves in harms way to protect our Constitution.

I am thankful for this country. I am thankful for the freedoms which we have. I am ashamed that for so long I have taken for granted those freedoms. I am thankful that I had a chance to serve my country.

The directive to “watch and pray” is still applicable as it was 200 years ago and 2000 years ago.

Watching means more than simply looking out for irregularities. It also means that we take action. A neighborhood watch program is only effective if the people watching also call authorities to action should the need arise. This places a responsibility on us.
We need to know what our rights our. We need to know what our Constitution says. We need to be able to think critically. We also need to be turn that knowledge into a watch. Then by watching we will know if something is amiss, and with our vote take action.

We also need to rely on whichever Creator we worship and through prayer ask for his divine help. This means not only relying on our own merits, but realizing that without divine help we are nothing. This means not relying on the arm of flesh, but on the divine arm of God to help and direct the leaders of our country.

For too long, we as Americans have been asleep on the tower. Enemies have and our infiltrating the ranks of our representatives. We need to find them and root them out.

WAKE UP! Stand tall, watch and pray.

Shocking pictures have emerged of a stark naked couple having sex on clock tower in the middle of a busy shopping centre. The Australian couple were snapped after startled onlookers noticed them clinching in the precarious, and extremely public, position on the edge of the balcony. The photos were taken in the heart of Sydney on Friday afternoon, at the historic clock tower opposite the bustling Broadway Shopping Centre.

Squirrel mother goes nuts and attacks dog trying to eat her baby

They have a bit of a reputation for a vicious streak, but this dog certainly got more than it bargained for after pouncing on a baby squirrel it found on the ground.Moments before the hapless baby would have been torn apart, these images show its mother appearing to leap off a nearby tree and attacking the surprised dog.

The squirrel gets ready to leap off the tree and its terrified baby is pounced on by the dog

Using its sharp teeth and claws, the squirrel tore into its canine opponent and distracted it so the baby could escape to freedom. It is unclear if the images have been edited, but the startled dog appears in considerable pain as the squirrel bites into its flank. The surprise assault gives the baby squirrel just enough time to climb back up the nearby tree before its mother is thrown clear and escapes from the dog.The baby squirrel appears to have fallen to the ground as it was being helped up the tree.

The dog snarls in pain as the squirrel leaps in to attack it – and the baby makes a leap for the safety of the tree

Spotting the helpless creature on the ground, the dog pounces and traps it underneath its front paws as it closes for the kill. But it appears to have underestimated its diminutive opponent, as the brave mother squirrel clearly has no intention of letting her baby become dinner and rushes to its aid by jumping on the dog’s head. After the whirlwind attack the mother squirrel springs free of the dog and rushes her baby back up into the safety of the tree. The frustrated dog is left sitting forlornly at the base of the tree as its prey escapes into the upper branches. The images appeared on a website that was set up solely to promote them using Weebly, a website creation programme.

Tonight is my 2nd-last night in Japan. I’m not really sure what to say to this besides “

Tonight is my 2nd-last night in Japan. I’m not really sure what to say to this besides “wow.” Not “wow, already,” because the act of returning to Tokyo made it clear to me in advance that the trip was almost over. Also not “wow, finally,” because apart from the odd disappointing destination, things have been pretty good. Anyway, the last two days.

Yesterday I went to Akihabara Electric Town, aptly nicknamed nerdvana by someone I know online. In my last post, I said “I’m under budget, so maybe I can catch up by buying geeky things.” Akihabara had no problem supplying me with enough geeky things, but I restrained myself and didn’t buy some things I saw, for reasons of “I’ll never use/wear this.” If my PS2 could play NTSC-J games, believe me I would have bought the International versions of several Square Enix games. And God Hand. When I get back I’ll probably just buy the NTSC-U/C version.

Also in Akihabara, I found English instructions for the Gundam game I previously mentioned, Kidō Senshi Gundam: Senjō no Kizuna. I forked out some money and played a few rounds, it’s crazy fun 4v4 action in the original Gundam setting. Virtual On’s got nothing on this. I dominated my first couple newbie matches but once I got to players closer to my level I started losing hard. I seem to have always had the high score on my team though. How about that?

I never found any Mega Man figures, but I did get a Mega Man Zero 3 strategy guide, which is written with furigana, so I think I’ll try to translate it in my spare time, develop my language skills. I’ve always learned best by doing. The furigana is important, as trying to decipher kanji I’ve never seen before would be an exercise in inefficiency at best.

On the way back from Akihabara, I stopped at a noodle place within Suidōbashi station for dinner, it was yummy and as often I burned my tongue by trying to eat too fast.

Today I went to check out the Sony building. It wasn’t open when I arrived at Ginza station, so I wandered towards Hibiya Park and the Imperial Palace grounds. Since the Imperial Family resides there, very little of it was accessible to the public but what I saw was all very well kept and pretty. Across the street was a park full of fountains that put on various shows of water, it was nice to sit and watch the waterworks for a while.

Finally I made my way back to the Sony building after a brief arcade stop. It was basically a several floor showroom of Sony products, not really worth the time for me to go since I had no plans to bring a new TV, camera, or PSP back to Canada with me.

So, off to Tokyo Tower. At the base of the tower is a four level building with shops, restaurants, and entertainment. The tower itself has two observatories, both with different and interesting views. It was pretty busy though, and hyperactive kids abounded. Still good times.

For lunch/dinner I had pizza and for dessert, a cool waffle/ice cream combo. Check it out in the photos, it was delicious. I would have gotten another crepe (there was a crepe place nearby) but that waffle bowl just looked too good not to try.

Tomorrow’s my last sightseeing day. What to do?

G1…

You lifted me from my fears,

Said go! when I said no!

Lent a shoulder through my tears,

You wouldn’t let my spirit go low,

I miss those days oh so.

.

My mentors, my companions, my guide,

Words not fit enough for all of you

For my troubles no use to hide,

Visible to you without giving any clue.

I miss you all by my side.

.

2 years together a memory…

Of tears and laughter,

Our dictionary, we knew no ‘weary’

In building our fine ‘tower’.

.

Obstacles didn’t stop us,

For fiLLAH was all we carried.

Grasping that our ‘tower’ is a must,

The maintenance of it we worried,

For amar makruf nahi mungkar is only just,

In our arena would we have rallied.

.

For two years had we built the base,

In hope the forthcomings provide the excess.

.

Mentors, companions, guides…

My heart releases you to progress to the next phase,

With du’as that you all will achieve success.

In this arena, I stay as G1, to carry on to the next pace,

Without you all, I feel brittle, I confess.

.

Yet,

Bringing the spirit you all taught me,

That fiLLAH is all I need,

To bring Islam in this arena I be,

My fret will gradually fade indeed.

.

I know things will never be the same,

Yet your support is not afar.

Remembering ALLAH is by side, I claim,

Wherever I am, wherever you all are.

.

Mentors, companions, guides…

What I request is nothing much,

Shanghai is China’s most cosmopolitan city. What was once a fishing town is now one of the country’s commercial centers (the other is Hong Kong). With impressive architecture including futuristic skyscrapers, and endless shopping opportunities, it’s a must for every tourist.

The city, situated in the east of China at the banks of the Yangtze river delta, has a roaring past. For a long time it was the largest port of the Chinese Empire, but in the early 19th Century it fell in British hands. Later Americans, the French and the Japanese controlled parts of the city.

Many migrants from Europe and America came to Shanghai and the city became the biggest financial center in the Far East. In 1949 the Communist Party of China took control. Foreign companies left and went to Hong Kong, but with the reforms in 1992 the city regained its economic force.

There are now 18.6 million people living in the municipality. The city is divided into many districts. The nine disricts at the west bank of the Huangpu river govern Puxi, the part of the city that is often called the old town.

Most residents live in Puxi. If you are searching for shopping, entertainment and culture, you should go to Puxi. People have nicknamed the city the “Paris of the East” and you will find this no surprise once you’ve been to Puxi. The newer part at the east bank is Pudong. It’s Shanghai’s commercial and financial hub, with an impressive skyline, dominated by the Oriental Pearl Tower (a 468 meters high TV tower) and the Jin Mao Tower (420 m).

Thanks to its history, this city will get you a taste of “east meets west”. With modern architectural marvels among traditional Chinese buildings, it’s no wonder why many around the world are flocking to this busy metropolis to enjoy every bits of the action.

Some tips:

Walk along the Bund, the city’s most popular boulevard, at the end of the Nanjing East Road at night and get a good view of Pudong, across the Huangpu River.

Shopping is likely to occupy most of your time and the most interesting shops are around Xintiandi and the French Concession.

Hang out in the narrow alleys and shopping mall of Xintiandi, known as “Yesterday meets tomorrow in Shanghai today” and you can see well-heeled expats and locals hang out.

Stroll along Dongtai Lu Antique Market, an open air street market which is the best place to take home memories of your Shanghai trip.

Also, don’t miss the Shanghai World Financial Tower, a brand new 101-story tower which will measure 492 meters and include a hotel with 175 rooms.

I haven’t written in a while, I think its been fairly obvious that I’ve had a mini melt

I haven’t written in a while, I think its been fairly obvious that I’ve had a mini melt down of sorts. A light hearted one at least, for the most part during the stress I’ve managed to keep smiling. Actually, since finishing my last assignment for the year I haven’t written anything at all. That’s almost a month of no writing.

Another thing I haven’t done for a long time is read my cards. Last night I pulled them out to see what the go is lately, although I had a fairly good idea that it wasn’t going to be pretty. Shall we?

Past and its influence – 8 swords.

Repeating a bad pattern or cycle, being afraid to move from danger for fear of being cut by the swords in front of me. Letting negative opinions influence me and believing in others percieved low opinions of me.

Obstacle – 2 pentacles (reversed).

Blindness with money, living outside of my means and being too passive.

In favour – Tower.

Rude awakenings and a massive upheaval or change. A destruction of bad patterns and rebuilding of new and improved ways. A shocking revelation that leads to a change in direction. Something false will be revealed.

Short term future – 10 swords.

Ruin. Complete and total destruction. Rock bottom, nowhere to go but up. Failure, your worst nightmare coming true.

Long term future – 2 swords (reversed).

Deception and lies around you. Put off making decisions until things become clearer. Being hurt or emotionally shattered by people around you, outside help needed. Inability to rationalise or judge between choices.

End result – 7 cups.

Too many choices, nothing is clear. Are all your needs being met? Wait until things become clear before choosing anything. Things may not be as they seem. Idealising situations and imagining things to be better than they are.

Is there anything positive about this spread at all? Aside from the obvious new direction, ‘its only up from here’ attitude of the Tower and 10 of swords, this all spells out confusion, lies and ruin. Shit is about to get completely fucked up and to be honest I’ve already seen the warning signs. Pretty much every single card is pointing to deception of some sort.

I had a specific question in mind, I was asking about the guy I met a month or so ago who I’m currently seeing. Things were going well, but there were just a few discrepancies here and there that have been making me wonder. It seems like, once again, I have opted for dating someone who is a little bit manipulative and emotionally abusive. But I’m not doing this anymore, I refuse to keep going with this stupid pattern. He hasn’t done anything overt, just little comments from time to time..

I guess what I should do is imagine the worst that could arise from this. If I’ve been played or cheated on, I won’t particularly care, it gives me an easy out. My worst thing isn’t a guy who leaves me to my own devices too much or disappears, I like my alone time. The worst would have to be someone who turns out psycho and won’t leave me alone. Someone who uses everything I’ve told them against me. A person who preys on my compassion to manipulate me.

This is all crazy talk at the moment, he hasn’t done anything too wrong yet, I’m just uneasy with what has been said. They’re only hints at an emotionally abusive person, not concrete behaviours. But if anyone would know, it would be me, right? I can spot a psycho a mile away. Or have I become so cynical that I can’t even date anyone without imagining a way that they will wrong me in the future? Even if in all other ways, they treat me good and these happenings are minor indicators, have I become so disenchanted that I can’t give anyone a chance?

That’s not completely true though, because I enjoy spending time with him. I was relieved to find a nice boy. Until I read the cards I didn’t even want to acknowledge anything bad he’d done. I’m obsessing over something that hasn’t even happened yet, proof that I’ve completely flipped it.

But I know the signs, I know the indicators! Unpredictable mood swings, playing hot and cold, sarcasm and criticism, dominating etc. He does it really sly though, apologises for everything and pretends I’m imagining things. So much that I’m doubting my own judgement, maybe I am being too harsh, maybe I’m overreacting because of my past relationships and experiences. In other ways he’s actually pretty good to me. Attentive and doting, wanting to spend lots of time with me, introducing me to his friends. Plus I’m known for making up excuses not to date people, because I’m so scared of intimacy and all of that. Hesitant to share my life.

If you read the cards, what’s your take on this? If you don’t, tell me what you think anyway. Tarot spreads are fun, huh?

“Say it with your actions

Saying those words to me doesn’t mean anything

I don’t wanna hear it

Baby you can keep those three

Might as well not even speak

Many different times before you were almost out the door

Then you’d say it and I’d forgive everything

But I’m sorry to report

That ain’t workin anymore

Now I gotta see if that’s really what you mean..”
