Last week, we blogged about the Idlewlyd Inn’s Dickens Dinner, Bayview Wildwood’s family Christmas plans, a Pillar and Post’s icewine lovers’ getaway and a Shamrock Lodge snowmobile package that’s close to OFSC trails.  This week’s post brings you holiday news from five more Resorts of Ontario: Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls, the Little Inn of Bayfield on Lake Huron, Pine Vista Resort in the Kawarthas, The Briars on Lake Simcoe, and the Millcroft Inn in Caledon Hills.

Holiday time in Niagara Falls is the season to combine waterslides and Niagara’s Winter Festival of Lights. From December 1-24 Great Wolf Lodge, an indoor waterpark resort, has tons of family things to do. There’s a gingerbread house so big you can eat in it. Santa pays a visit on December 5th. Family scavenger hunts and family dances will be held on Saturdays up to December 18th and Winter Friends Story Time is on every night at 8pm. Best of all, a one night stay gets you two days of water park play. Combine all of this with a visit to Niagara Falls’  Winter Festival of Lights and you’ve got yourself a great Niagara getaway. How about a bit of stargazing with your family in a big outdoor hot tub? You’ll find one at Pine Vista Resort. It’s on Stoney Lake in the Kawarthas, 90 minutes northeast of Toronto. Each of Pine Vista’s cottages and townhouses come with a fully equipped kitchen so you can cook your own Christmas turkey. They also  have jacuzzi tubs, TVs, DVD players, woodburning fireplaces and decks with BBQs. Over Christmas, a mini winter carnival is planned with face painting, movie nights, outdoor games, maple toffee-making, campfire, and crafts. There will be horse-drawn sleigh rides too, along with skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and  tobogganing. We visited The Briars earlier this year and blogged about its fascinating new history room. The resort is in Jackson’s Point,  Ontario’s first cottage country, an hour north of  Toronto. People used to travel to this little Lake Simcoe community from Toronto by radial railway (somehow that sounds incredibly civilized!). Two and three-night Christmas packages are available.  If you’re a crowd,  look into their lakeside family lodges. They sleep up to twelve comfortably. Highlights of a Briars holiday itinerary include a mulled cider welcome, an Irish Coffee party, a champagne breakfast followed by guided country walks or horse-drawn sleigh ride. They’ve even got a treat-making workshop for winter birdwatchers. On Christmas Eve, a festive buffet dinner with  live entertainment and a visit from Santa is planned. Christmas Day includes the resort’s annual snow golf tournament followed by a punch party and a Christmas feast with all the trimmings. The Little Inn of Bayfield, 45 minutes west of Stratford on Lake Huron, is Ontario’s oldest hostelry. In the 1830s it operated as a stagecoach stop. Today it caters to those with a nose for fine food and wine. Cooking class weekends and winemaker’s dinners are held every month. Positive reviews have come from a long line of respected Canadian and US food writers. Every year, the Little Inn posts its Christmas menus on its website. A quick peek by yours truly made my mouth water. All  Christmas meals will be paired with outstanding Ontario VQA wines and depending on the meal, meal prices range between $45 and $100 per person. If you and your significant other or the family want to make an overnight of it, check the Little Inn’s selection of one to four-night Christmas packages.

In early September, I blogged about my visit to the Millcroft Inn & Spa with a Canwest food writer. Roberto Fracchioni is the well-loved chef here. He hosts monthly cooking sessions that always draw a crowd. This holiday season Chef Fracchioni has planned a  Christmas Day Dinner menu as well as two Christmas menus suitable for larger family gatherings.  Lots of house delicacies are on all three menus. Dinners run between $56 and $65 per person. Chef  Fracchioni and Pastry Chef Enrico Schulze will also create a customized menu experience if you want your own holiday event. Now, that would be a treatl!  The Millcroft has a spa that is one of the largest in Ontario. Its spa menu for men has received a lot of attention. A Winter Bliss getaway ties this inn’s spa and culinary together nicely. It includes a three-course dinner for two, breakfasts, a $100 spa credit, and an ovennight at the inn. When we talk about green building materials, we mean that they are eco-friendly, designed to not create a negative impact on the environment. Lots of people think that green building materials only do things such as conserve energy or are recyclable, or are made from recycled raw material, but that is only a small part of it. Green building materials also help to reduce maintenance costs over the total life of the structure; they help to improve the health of the people living and using the building, and they also lower the costs you have to bear when making renovations to the building.

The Importance of Green Building Materials

Several of the key factors in green building materials are: do they emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs)? Do they need VOCs for maintenance and/or cleaning? These are chemicals such as paint thinner, dry cleaning solvents, formaldehyde etc. Many building materials have these chemicals in them. Over time, they vaporize into the air. If they can then get into areas inhabited by people, sickness can be the result. Also, if the building material needs VOCs for routine cleaning, that will put still more of them into the atmosphere. Many of these volatile organic compounds are also greenhouse gases. Given the current state of the environment, we don’t need to be putting any more of them into the air!

What to Look for

Overall, green building materials should have five features. First, resource efficiency; that is, they’re made from recycled materials, or materials that are natural, plentiful or renewable. The manufacturing process should also be efficient, and the materials available locally; that way nothing is wasted in transportation. Then the material should be durable, so that it lasts a long time, and also be able to be re-used/recycled.

Next is the issue of indoor air quality. Green building materials are designed to insure that the air quality inside is as good as possible, to insure the best possible health of the people who live in/use the building. Then there’s energy efficiency. Green materials help to reduce energy consumption in buildings. Along with that is water conservation; these materials also help to reduce the building’s water consumption.

You want your home to look as good as possible. So, clean up the yard, repair any bare patches of sod, clean out any flowerbeds, etc. If your house is in need of a paint job, you may want to invest in that. This may cost some money, but think of it as a business investment. You don’t want people to cringe at their first look at your home. It takes work to sell your home like a pro.

Next is the interior. Clean your house and arrange the furniture to make it look nice. That may mean removing some things to make your home seem less cluttered, or painting or fixing things, but it’s well worth it. The two most important rooms in the house are the kitchen and bathroom; work at making them look nice. That may mean changing a sink or painting some cabinets, but the investment can pay big dividends in the end.

So, cast aside sentimentality. Selling your home like a pro is a business and it takes time, effort and money.

High list price for these 15 sold homes was $240,000, Low list price was $29,900, Average list price $139,043, Median list price was $139,900, and total list price volume was $2,085,645.

High sold price for these 15 listings was $230,000, Low sold price was $23,000, Average sold price was $131,456, Median sold price was $139,650, and total sold volume was $1,971,840. High Days on Market (DOM) was 248 days, Low DOM was 0 days, Average DOM was 69 days, and Median DOM was 52 days.

There were also 2 homes that went under a Pending or Contingency contract status in Easley. High list price for these homes was $156,990, Low list price was $84,900, Average list price was $120,945, Median list price was $120,945, and total volume for these homes that went under Pending or Contingent contract status was $241,890. Halloween was tons of fun, if a little subdued. Yours truly and the Zoologists recruited a couple of girls and went out on the town as the Spice Girls. While researching our costumes, we ran across this gem. This was made a little before Ginger Spice (never trust a ginger kid) left the band, which forms the running theory why this video is made sans actual Spice Girls. I think this wins the “Most Fucked Up and Written-While-On-Acid Music Video Concept” award. Whatever, the Spice Girls were awesome and the 90s is probably the greatest decade in the history of mankind. Enjoy!

OLD TOWNHOUSES usually come with big ‘buts,’ points out Ingrid Abramovitch in the intro to her new book, Restoring a House in the City: A Comprehensive Owner’s Guide to Renovating Town Houses, Brownstones and Row Houses With Great Style (Artisan). They may have “charmingly anachronistic grace notes, from imposing classical entrances to parlors straight out of Edith Wharton novels,” she writes, BUT, less charmingly, they also tend to have roof leaks, slanty floors, and ominous cracks in the wall.

Never mind. IMO, as readers of this blog know, those are mere annoyances, no contest at all compared to the many pluses of living in a house built in the 19th century, when houses really were built. This book offers abundant proof that antique houses are worth the effort.

It features 21 exceptional dwellings, from a Boston Brahmin to a double-wide brownstone in Troy, N.Y., a Greek Revival in Charleston, and a San Francisco Edwardian that survived the 1906 earthquake. The projects closest to my heart, of course, are those in Brooklyn, which is well-represented with six envy-inducing houses.

Some are restored, some extensively remodeled. Some are furnished with antiques, others done up in a modern mix. There’s nothing cookie-cutter about any of them. A couple are a bit over-the-top for my taste: too much clutter, too much color. But most ooze warmth and livability.

It’s no surprise that the book’s interiors are impeccably styled and photographed. The author, a resident of Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, is a veteran design journalist and former editor at House & Garden and Martha Stewart Living.

(CFD.net.au – Contract for Difference, Share, Forex, ETFs, Commodities Traders) – A home-made bomb has been detonated in Sydney’s south-west overnight, smashing the windows of two townhouses.

The explosive was placed on the bonnet of a car on Market Street at Condell Park and blown up at about 1.30am.

Firefighters and police arrived to find the car alight, and broken windows in two nearby townhouses.

Inspector Mark Smith says it is not clear if the device was intended to damage the homes as well as the car.

“[It was] only probably 10-15 metres where the actual townhouses were from the device itself,” he said.

Shrapnel from the blast was found embedded in the lounge room wall of one of the damaged homes, and the roller doors of both the garages.

People were home at the time, but no one was injured.

Police say that so far there is no indication of a possible motive.

Construction costs have fallen so low that you’d think everyone and their mother would be lining to building something. So far, only the government is biting. And that’s done little to spur the construction sector and offset its job losses.
