Sometimes, these are tricky things to write. Other times, stories write themselves. Thanks for Mr Al-Hawasi and Mr Odemwingie for doing the hard work for me.

Biggest Deal of the Day

In terms of Cash, that would be Mario Balotelli to AC Milan for £19 million. However, in terms of what dominates the papers today, David Beckham to Paris Saint-Germain trumps that quite comfortably.

Beckham is an icon in the footballing world, and whilst on the pitch his best days are behind him, off the pitch he’s a massive commercial asset. Plus, Ibrahimovic is probably looking forward to his free kicks and corners for a few more goals.

Bargain of the Day

Stoke City signing Jack Butland takes some beating. For £3.5m, Stoke have signed England’s future number 1. They’ll more than recoup that in Summer when current Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic goes to either Arsenal or Manchester United.

As a bonus for Birmingham, they’ve even had Butland loaned back to them for the rest of the season.

Gamble of the Day

QPR have gone all-or-nothing in a bid to stay up. Having finally ended Jermaine Jenas’ Spurs stay, and signed Andros Townsend for what must now be loan number 87 in his career thus far, they’ve also bought giant centre-half Chris Samba from big-spending Anzhi for £12.5m, with £100k a week wages. Samba is a fine defender, but he’ll need to be a rock to keep QPR afloat.

Deadline Day Comedy 1

Poor Maarten Stekelenburg. The Roma goalkeeper boarded a flight to london at 5.30pm UK time to discuss a move to Fulham. Unbeknownst to him, Roma called the deal off at about 6pm UK time, as the Italian transfer window closed at that time, with Stekelenburg in mid-air and unaware of the events below.

Stekelenburg is 6ft7, so I pity the person who had to tell him when he arrived at Heathrow.

Deadline Day Comedy 2

Nottingham Forest’s owner, Fawi Al-Hawasi, really knows how to make friends.

Having agreed a fee and personal terms with Peterborough United and their star player George Boyd, the player arrived in Nottingham for a medical before signing.

At 10.35pm, Al-Hawasi decided to call off the deal, citing a failed medical with Boyd’s eyesight being the problem.

Funny that, as last month George Boyd scored from the halfway line against Huddersfield, when he spotted the permanently-out-of-position Alex Smithies, um, out of position.

Deadline Day Comedy 3

Ahh, Peter Odemwingie. If his twitter rants weren’t funny enough (an exercise in throwing away any advantage a person may have had in a situation, just read them to see why), then his behaviour yesterday rivals such luminaries as Marco Boogers and Marques Isias in it’s madness.

Odemwingie arrived at QPR to discuss a transfer yesterday. All fine, until it transpires that his current club had rejected the approaches from QPR. Odemwingie then stayed in the car park for the rest of the evening, and as 11pm slowly ticked by, probably realised that he still has to show up at West Brom today. I’m sure he’ll be welcomed straight back.

Thanks for reading – comments welcome as always!

Excerpt:

The 16-year-old Townsend lost to seventh-seeded Ana Konjuh of Croatia 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 Saturday in the semifinals of the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships. But she clinched the top ranking when No. 3 Katerina Siniakova lost in the Orange Bowl doubles quarterfinals. Gretchen Rush was the last American girl to end the year as ITF world junior singles champion in 1982. Townsend, of Stockbridge, Ga. , trains with U.S. Tennis Association national coach Kathy Rinaldi at the player development center in Boca Raton, Fla. Townsend won the 2012 Australian Open singles and doubles titles, along with doubles titles at Wimbledon and the US Open. She plans to turn pro in 2013.

Director Peter Dukes has been making budget short films since 1999. In this piece, Tim and I review

Director Peter Dukes has been making budget short films since 1999. In this piece, Tim and I review two of his more recent efforts. The first is a horror/fantasy werewolf film entitled The Beast starring Bill Oberst, Jr. The other is an award-winning fantasy/science fiction short entitled The New World starring Katy Townsend.

The Beast

One criterion on which to judge a short is its ability to make the viewer forget that he or she isn’t watching a feature-length film, and Peter Dukes’ The Beast succeeds in doing precisely that. Generally speaking short horror films are marred by lazy camera work, weak storylines and even worse acting. The Beast avoids all of these pitfalls. Both the acting and cinematography are excellent, invoking a timeless vibe reminiscent of many films from the 50s and 60s.

Since The Beast is a short film I’m hesitant to get into plot details, lest I give away the entire thing. But I will say that it’s a werewolf movie and a darn good one for that matter; the film runs only 12 minutes long, and yet it is significantly better than all of the Twilight films. It’s really quite a shame that we don’t see feature length films like this anymore – it’s a lost art.

You can (and should) watch The Beast on Youtube.

Verdict: #Winning
RT Score: 90%

~ Tim

The New World

The New World is a brightly-colored silent fantasy adventure that follows the Wandering Fairy (Katy Townsend) as she explores the strange world of modern human civilization. Supported by excellent but minimal special effects, director Peter Dukes makes good use of his tools as he crafts a convincing dichotomy between the innocent nature of the film’s protagonist and the industrial world we all live in. The movie even manages to pose an interesting (but vague) question about both the beauty of simple life goals and the peril of accepting mundanity as a mode of existence.

Not everything is sunshine and rainbows with The New World, of course. While I’m a big fan of silent filmmaking, one of my biggest pet peeves is soundless dialogue. Short of the on-screen titles common in films from the beginning of the 20th century, I believe most conflict, exposition, and action can be expressed through facial expression, body language, and music. As such, the scene between the Wandering Fairy and the Fairy Queen felt a little forced to me. It is a minor quibble, but it did briefly take me out of the film.

Ultimately The New World is a light, fun adventure that brings up some interesting questions without ever cementing a concrete thesis. If you have some time, I recommend you check out the short on Youtube.

Verdict: Win
RT Score: 80%

She recently had her 4th baby girl and I had the special opportunity to take her first baby portraits!
Arriyanna was so interested in everything I was doing she did not want to sleep much. We got adorable photos all the way around. Here’s a quick preview of what we captured:

I’ve already mentioned that Foothills Parkway is my favorite sunrise spot in the Smokies. This image is more evidence as to why I love it so much. Shortly after sunrise, the morning light spills over the landscape illuminating the ridges, valleys, fog, and foliage of the southwestern corner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With the sun low on the horizon and the fall colors nearing their peak, the conditions can be spectacular. In this image you can see that the color is consistently vibrant from the valley floor to this location several hundred feet higher.

The fog was already dissipating at this time, but for a few glorious moments all the elements came together to create a beautiful scene. Enjoy.

In lieu of a major fall trip to a remote location, I decided to take two three-day weekends in the southern Appalachians to satisfy my unquenchable thirst for new images. Fall is my favorite time of the year and I enjoy every minute I can looking for great images in beautiful locations. The first trip was to western North Carolina through Asheville and Boone. The second trip was to Townsend, Tennessee near the southwestern part of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

I’ve visited Townsend often for several different reasons. First of all Townsend is not Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, or Cherokee. I’m sure there are great people who live in those towns, but the traffic in the fall is unbearable and competes with the peace and solitude found in the park itself. Second, Townsend is literally on the park’s doorstep. I can be in the park from any hotel in Townsend in less than ten minutes. My favorite stream in the park can be reached two minutes after entering the park. Finally, the drive from my home to Townsend can be done in less than four hours and there are a variety of ways to travel. Other than the interstate route, virtually all of those drives can be as beautiful as the park itself.

Ironically, this image isn’t from Townsend or from the park. It is *of* the park though. About twenty minutes west of Townsend, you can access Foothills Parkway. A short way up the parkway there are two pull-outs that offer magnificent views of the park to the east. It is the best sunrise spot I know of in the area. It’s common to see dozens of photographers lined up at the pull-out waiting for the sun to rise. Fortunately, the pull-out is quite long and can accommodate that number of photographers and even a few more.

You never know what actual sunrise conditions will be. Low lying clouds or the mountains can block the sun as it hovers over the horizon. Or, a clear day can yield a flat, bright sunrise that is totally uninteresting photographically speaking.

On this morning the actual sunrise wasn’t particularly colorful. However, it was cool enough that a bit of fog had formed in the valleys below. Although the fog dissipated quickly after the sun’s rays reached the valley floor, the fog moved through and up the valleys enough to make for some interesting images. This image was taken before sunrise or at least before the sun rose over the mountains. The sun had risen far enough to create some interesting color in the morning sky. It also created enough reflected light that the fog was illuminated against the still dark mountain ridges. Even though I like to capture riotous color and grand landscapes something about the subtlety of this image conveys peace and tranquility to me. I hope it does to you as well. Enjoy.

A game which will be remembered more for ITV’s 31-second highlights than anything of note in the game, but still, here goes, a match report:

Spurs beat Coventry by 3 goals to nil in the 3rd round of the FA Cup, however, crucially it marked the return to fitness of midfield stalwart Scott Parker and popular full back Benoit Assou-Ekotto. Clint Dempsey scored twice and Gareth Bale once as Spurs ran out comfortable winners in the end, seemingly treating it like a training exercise at some points (or for Ade, the whole game).

AVB chose to field a weakened XI, making eight changes from the side that beat Reading 3-1 on Tuesday, to face Coventry, correctly thinking that we could win even with a few of the reserves in the side. Spurs started well, dominating the first half and notching up 3 goals – including a goal from a corner! Our first goal came when Clint slotted home a Bale flick on from a Gylfi free kick in the 14th minute, and 19 minutes later we made it two when Bale himself tapped in a deflected Dempsey strike – shortly after beating 5 players in an incredible run before firing wide. And just 5 minutes before half time, 2 became 3 when Dempsey looped a seemingly-weak header over everyone and into the near post of the Coventry goal from a Bale corner.

The second half seemed to be more about giving squad players game time and giving Scotty a standing ovation than anything else. Townsend came on for Bale – saving him for the crucial league match away at Loftus Road (now moved to Saturday) – before Carroll came on for the lively Gylfi Sigurdsson and Mousa Dembele further completed his gradual return to fitness with a 10 minute cameo at the expense of Scott Parker – who had an excellent game. It was great to see him back in the side and his leadership and commitment qualities will be crucial to Spurs over the next 5 months, one thinks.

A good performance against an admittedly poor Coventry side, but into the 4th round we march, with the draw at 3.30 this afternoon.

When I was in Middle School, I learned that it was easier for me to concentrate on my homework if I had music playing. Just prior to the invention/popularization of iPods, YouTube, and internet radio stations, my selection was limited to whatever chrome Benny Goodman disk I found lying around. But now, thousands of hours of mind boggling sounds and shapes are at my fingertips.

I would like to suggest that writers are often influenced by music. Read any Stephen King novel if you don’t believe me. For my style in particular, I find that certain sounds get me into the mindset of what I am trying to write. Furthermore, I try to experiment; I don’t listen to the same artist over and over, and I attempt to find sounds that make me think.

Some say you should listen to music before you write, some say during, and some say after. I say that it is all up to you. Anyway, I will post a few songs that put me in different mindsets.

1. Danko Jones – “Baby Hates Me.”

2. Falling Up – “Contact”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4UyP0pkfeY

3. Coheed and Cambria – “Domino”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0ogODyzUNM

4. Devin Townsend – “Ghost”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmGpVN7xag0

So this is just a sample of the diversity of music I have found, but all of it helps me create moods of characters, and think in a different way than I may have before. And some of it is just fun to listen to.
