China says it will cut the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of gross domestic product in 2020 by 40- 45% from 2005 levels, says state media.

The “carbon intensity” measurement is unique to China and analysts say it will not necessarily cut emissions.

It came ahead of December’s UN climate change summit in Copenhagen, which Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will attend.

Hazardous Chemicals are an integral part of our lives. Whether we are talking about the workplace or the home, hazardous chemicals and substances are present. If you’ve ever had to childproof your home, you were probably suddenly made aware of how many harmful chemicals you actually had in your home. From cleaning supplies to hair care and personal hygiene products, the home is full of chemicals that have the potential to harm anyone who does not take the necessary precautions.

The workplace is often much, much worse with all types of chemicals that could have adverse health effects, or even be fatal if ingested, that could burn if it came in contact with the skin or harmful if inhaled. It is important to be aware of the nature of chemical hazards, both at home and in the workplace, in order to make sure that they are handled safely.

Toxicity vs. Hazardous

The toxicity of a substance is determined by the amount of harm that it can cause to the body. Thus, if it takes a large quantity of a certain substance to have adverse effects, the chemical is considered to have a low toxicity.

Additionally, three factors are used to determine the toxicity of a substance:

1. The chemical structure of the substance
2. The extent to which the body absorbs it
3. The extent to which the body can detoxify or purge the substance

The effects may be local (at chemical burn to a small area of the skin, for example) or widespread throughout the whole body.

A chemical is considered hazardous based on several factors. The toxicity of the substance is just one of the factors used to evaluate how hazardous a chemical is.

A chemical is considered hazardous based on:

1. The toxicity (see above)
2. The route of exposure (how the substance enters the body)
3. The dose (how much of the substance entered the body)
4. The duration or length of the exposure
5. The reaction and interaction with other substances (exposure to other substances at the same time may reduce or increase the effect of the initial chemical)
6. The sensitivity of the individual (different people react differently)

” One goal of the Clean Water Act of 1972 was to upgrade the nation’s sewer systems, many of them built more than a century ago, to handle growing populations and increasing runoff of rainwater and waste. During the 1970s and 1980s, Congress distributed more than $60 billion to cities to make sure that what goes into toilets, industrial drains and street grates would not endanger human health.

But despite those upgrades, many sewer systems are still frequently overwhelmed, according to a New York Times analysis of environmental data. As a result, sewage is spilling into waterways. “

Due to playing the waiting game in my PhD while I await ethics clearance, I’m employing my dormant brain power in the direction of new non-PhD learning by revisiting some old interests. Namely, sugar and the chemicals that we consume in our daily lives. I started by re-reading the 70’s classic ‘The Sugar Blues’ (Dufty, 1975) and I’ve now moved on to a new book titled ‘Slow Death by Rubber Duck’ (Smith & Lourie, 2009). The result is another good hard look at the secrets added to my food, cleaning and personal hygeine products. Scary stuff. Given that I’m a fairly wholesome kind of animal, there’s no soft drink, lollies or otherwise obvious sugar culprits in my pantry – I’ve learnt over the years that this stuff isn’t food. However, a stock take of my kitchen did reveal some unlikely culprits which have now found themselves relegated to the bin. Gone is the Indian Korma paste, mint sauce and pasta sauce. Given that in Australia we consume over 50 kg of sugar per person per year (a lot of this is added to our food without our knowledge) and that sugar has no nutritional value at all and is identified as a poison, I think it’s reasonable to avoid it (Dufty, 1975). The same goes for toxic substances added to cleaning and personal hygeine products. Consider that it’s estimated that by the time the average woman grabs her morning coffee, she has applied 126 different chemicals in 12 different products to her face, body and hair (Smith & Lourie, 2009). I know humans are hardy and all, but that can’t be good for you long term.

So, while I await the long tortured journey that is ethical clearance for my PhD research, I’m going to document my journey to purity. I’ve begun by throwing out the kitchen products with added sugar, discovered that the soy milk that I order my coffee with has added sugar and therefore have pledged to make the switch to drinking long blacks (sigh) and am about to consume the last half of a home made biscuit that contains soy choc chips with added sugar. Here goes.

This experiment will document my reactions to detoxifying and purifying my body and the environment I live in. Stay tuned……

DAY ONE

Did you know that there’s most likely sugar in your bread? Yes, even the fancy ones have it. And forget about trying to find a pre-packaged cereal without it. You might be able to find one with honey, but if you’re vegan, these are out. And it’s there in your healthy soy yogurt as well. Sugar sugar everywhere. I’ve just done the grocery shopping and clearly, I’m going to need to forgo much of the pre-packaged stuff. Later on today, I’ll be switching from my soy flat white (the vitasoy soy milk that cafe’s use has the equivalent of 2 teaspoons of sugar if you order a large coffee), to a long black, which I’ll sweeten with my stevia powder, lovingly concealed in my bag. I’m also going to make peanut butter cookies sweetened with agave, to help me through the sweet cravings. Stay tuned…..

Nuclear waste stays harmful for an incredibly long time; the signs at the United States’ Carlsbad disposal facility warn people not to dig or drill there until at least 12 000 AD. This leads to a considerable problem. What if the inhabitants of the 210th century don’t know how to read or speak English? They probably won’t understand what a radiation warning symbol means, either.

That makes it rather difficult to find ways to ensure that these radioactive tombs are never opened. Even if they could understand the warnings, are you sure they’d pay attention? Modern archaeologists frequently disturb the tombs of Egyptian Pharohs, despite warnings of a plethora of hideous curses.

The United States Department of Energy has allotted $1M to figure out some sort of acceptable 10 000 year marker system for their waste burial sites. Slate has a fascinating article on it. An exceprt:

During a 2004 cleanup operation at the Hanford nuclear site in Washington state, personnel digging through a trench uncovered a safe containing a glass bottle. And inside the bottle, white sludge. Tests identifying the substance as a type of plutonium gave way to more tests until, in the Spring of 2009, scientists from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory revealed what, exactly, the crew had uncovered: A 1944 artifact from the fledgling nuclear weapons program—the oldest existing sample of bomb-grade plutonium from a nuclear reactor, with a half-life of 24,110 years. Although this sexagenarian sludge isn’t dangerous to touch—its particles are too large to penetrate skin—it’s poisonous if swallowed or inhaled and will be for centuries to come. Yet it was housed in a flimsy receptacle that should rightfully contain nothing more toxic than bleach. In the rush of nuclear discovery, the mid-century scientists never paused to consider that a trespasser might happen upon the safe and crack it open.

Since that time, “deep geological disposal” has replaced shallow trenches as our preferred nuclear-waste-storage technique. But another, more abstract problem—raised by the Hanford message in a bottle—remains unsolved: not how to store waste but how to label it. Not what container to use or where to bury it but how to explain the long-term dangers of what’s inside to a trespasser. This seemingly simple conundrum (just use a radiation hazard symbol!) is complicated by the fact that such a trespass would prove lethal if it took place not only in 60 years but in 10,000 or 100,000. China, the planet’s oldest continuous civilization, stretches back, at most, 5,000 years. And the world’s oldest inscribed clay tablets—the earliest examples of written communication—date only from 3,000 or 3,500 B.C. It’s impossible to say what apocalyptic event might separate 21^st-century Americans from our 210^th-century successors. Successors, mind you, who could live in a vastly more sophisticated society than we do or a vastly more primitive one.

I am posting this link because there are many people out there (including myself) who just bought a big bottle or have been using FOTE Aloe Vera Gel.

Ingerdients: Aloe Vera Gel, Triethanolamine, Tocopheryl Acetate, Carbomer, Tetrasodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Diazolidinyl Urea

This gel works well, but it does contain UREA. (# 3 on the list: “Ureas, formally known as diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, or DMDM hydantoin and sodium hydroxymethyl-glycinate, are preservatives that have the potential to release formaldehyde in very small amounts and are a primary cause of contact dermatitis.”) The FOTE brand has this ingredient last, which means it is in the least amount, but still I don’t want to make my sensitive skin even more sensitive. Do you?

This product also contains #13 on the list. (“Chelators, such as disodium EDTA and tetrasodium EDTA, are used in personal care products to remove impurities from low-quality raw materials. They do not readily biode-grade in the environment.”) Bad for the environment is ultimately bad for you.

Carbomer…not so good either for you or the environment. # 11 on the list (“Synthetic polymers, such as sodium polyacrylate and carbomer, come from petroleum and give viscosity to skincare products. They are highly processed and their manufacture creates toxic by-products.”)

I must admit. I bought this product because it was cheap, and it had Aloe Vera as the 1st ingredient, but I should have put my money where my conscience was, and got the good stuff. Aloe Vera gel is great, but it is best to get it from an organic foods grocery store such as Earth Fare or maybe Whole Foods.
