Sinopse:

O filme conta a história de Simba, um pequeno leãozinho que é filho de Mufasa, o Rei Leão, e da rainha Sarabi. O recém-nascido recebe a bênção do sábio babuíno Rafiki mas, ao crescer, é envolvido nas artimanhas de seu tio Scar, o invejoso e maquiavélico irmão de Mufasa, que planeja livrar-se do sobrinho e herdar o trono. Quando Simba se vê injustamente acusado pela morte de Mufasa, sua única chance de salvar sua vida é se exilar das Terras do Reino. Ele encontra abrigo junto a outros dois excluídos da sociedade, um javali chamado Pumba e um suricate chamado Timão, que lhe ensinam a filosofia do "Hakuna Matata" (sem preocupações). Anos depois, ao ser descoberto por Nala, sua amiga de infância, Simba tem que decidir se deve assumir suas responsabilidades como rei ou seguir com seu estilo de vida despreocupado.

Este filme merece ser o primeiro nesta lista, scar continua sendo o mais malvad vilão de todos os tempos, e sinto uma pontada no coração ao ver morrendo, grande filme, grande roteiro, grandes musicas, sem palavras!

Após um incidente em que acerta um homem com sua bengala, Carl é considerado uma ameaça pública e forçado a ser internado em um asilo. Para evitar que isto aconteça, ele enche milhares de balões em sua casa, fazendo com que ela levante vôo. O objetivo de Carl é viajar para uma floresta na América do Sul, um local onde ele e Ellie sempre desejaram morar. Só que, após o início da aventura, ele descobre que seu pior pesadelo embarcou junto: Russell (Jordan Nagai), um menino de 8 anos.

Os primeiros 10 minutos são tão lindos que me fazem chorar como um bebê sentir uma leve pontada no coração em todas as vezes que assisto, além disso o filme é uma obra-prima.

Since it opened on May 1, 1989 as the third major theme park at Walt Disney World(r) Resort, Disney-MGM Studios has celebrated the golden age of Hollywood with such classic attractions as The Great Movie Ride, Magic of Disney Animation and the fascinating Backlot Tour. Block Party Bash
An all-new Disney-Pixar inspired parade, Block Party Bash, will enable guests to sing and dance along with their favorite characters from such hit Disney animated films as A Bug’s Life, Cars, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Monsters, Inc., Ratatouille and Toy Story. The Block Party Bash also features high-flying acrobatics and is a must-see for guests visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios starting in the spring of 2008 (replacing the Disney Stars and Motor Cars Parade). .

High School Musical 2: School’s Out!
The interactive High School Musical 2: School’s Out show makes it debut at Disney’s Hollywood Studios with a lively cast that dances and sings to hit songs from the wildly successful Disney Channel original film, “High School Musical 2: School’s Out!” Catch “Wildcat fever” at the High School Musical 2: School’s Out show, which will be presented multiple times daily at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Jedi Training Academy
Based on the incredibly popular Star Wars films, the Jedi Training Academy at Star Tours features an intergalactic entertainment experience that gives young Jedi students the opportunity to learn the “ways of the force” in order to battle and defeat the evil Darth Vader and his minions. The Jedi Training Academy will take place multiple times daily at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Play House Disney-Live on Stage!
A whole new Play House Disney show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will include a host of new Disney Channel characters from such programs as “Handy Manny,” “Little Einsteins” and “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.” Designed for preschoolers, the live Play House Disney show will last approximately 20 minutes and take place multiple times daily at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Playhouse Disney is located on Soundstage 5 in the Animation Courtyard, directly across from The Magic of Disney Animation.

Toy Story Mania!
Toy Story Mania! takes the interactive ride-game experience to infinity . . . and beyond! Inspired by the classic Disney-Pixar animated movie, Toy Story, Toy Story Mania! will make its debut in the summer of 2008 as the newest attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. With state-of-the-art, 3-D technology, this thrilling interactive ride will take guests on a wild adventure through a video game where they use spring-action shooters to toss rings at aliens, throw eggs at barnyard targets and launch darts at balloons (scoring points in the process just like at Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin). Das letzte Kapitel der Toy Story Reihe soll in Deutschland am 23.09.2009 starten und wird auch in 3D gezeigt. Doch nun viel Spaß mit dem internationalen Trailer zu “Toy Story 3″.

Entre las cintas de animación, la que es sin duda la más esperada para el 2010 es Toy Story 3, que trae de regreso al grupo de personajes más reconocidos de Pixar. El trailer contiene básicamente las mismas escenas que tuvimos oportunidad de ver en el anterior, aunque si hay algunas nuevas. La cinta ha estado dando a conocer su material mercadológico por cuentagotas, pero aún así, ha sido lo suficiente como para captar el interés de los espectadores potenciales.

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen reprise their roles as Woody and Buzz Lightyear, and so does Joan Cusack as Jessie the Cowgirl.

I like the direction Pixar have gone with the third film with Andy off to college, they could have kept him as a child, but they have made it exciting by him moving away and leaving his toys with a crazy toddler nursery.

Release date is 23rd July in the UK, and like most new Disney films, it is presented in 3D

Just hearing that familiar music was enough to bring back dozens of fond memories when I saw the Toy Story 3 trailer a couple months back. If you don’t remember it or missed it the first time around, then here’s a look.

I can’t wait. The original cast returns, with the sad exception of the late Jim Varney, whose character Slinky Dog will instead be voiced by actor Blake Clark. And joining the cast are the likes of Timothy Dalton, Jeff Garlin, Whoopi Goldberg, Bonnie Hunt and a few other notable names.

With Clash of the Titans, the Wolf Man, The A-Team, Kick-Ass and now Toy Story 3, 2010 is already shaping up to be a banner year at the movies!

   Meine Meinung: Wall-E ist eine wundervolle Symbiose aus Romanze und Gesellschaftskritik, die mit einem wundervoll subtilen Humor gespickt ist.

   Meine Meinung: Neben Prinzessin Mononoke der stärkste Miyazaki Film. Die Neuinterpretation der klassischen Geschichte von Alice im Wunderland ist fabelhaft gelungen und bietet darüber hinaus genug eigene Elemente, um dem Zuschauer eine völlig neue Erfahrung zu bieten.

3. Oben (2009, Disney/Pixar)
   Meine Meinung: Für mich bisher der beste Film 2009 und genau so tiefgründig und faszinierend wie “Wall-E”. Pixar beweist mit den neusten Filmen, dass man neben eher albernen Filmen auch wirklich tiefgründige Kost bieten kann.

4. Der König der Löwen (1994, Disney)
   Meine Meinung: Für viele Menschen meiner Generation ist dieser Film einer der Schlüsselmomente der Kindheit. Der Film hat zwar inzwischen 15 Jahre auf dem Buckel, ist aber immer noch genau so faszinierend und wird noch über Jahrzehnte hinweg Kinder und Erwachsene begeistern. Aber meiner Ansicht nach ist der Film schwächer als “Die Schöne und das Biest”.
5. Persepolis (2007, Universal)
   Info zum Film: Ein Film über die Geschichte einer Familie im Iran, die über alle Grenzen und Generationen hinweg zusammenhält.

6. Die Schöne und das Biest (1991, Disney)
   Meine Meinung: Für mich der schönste Disney Film der 90er Jahre, welcher zurecht als bester Film des Jahres für den Oscar nominiert wurde. Der Film ist für mich ein zeitloser Klassiker und einer der ganz großen Würfe von Disney. Im Herbst 2010 wird dieses Meisterwerk endlich wieder  neu auf DVD und Blu-ray aufgelegt.
7. Die Unglaublichen (2004, Disney/Pixar)
   Meine Meinung: Vor allem humortechnisch weiß der Film voll und ganz zu überzeugen. In meine persönliche Top 3 der Pixar Filme schafft es dieser Film zwar nicht, aber dennoch ist er meiner Meinung nach ein wundervoller Film, welcher gekonnt Superheldenklischees bedient ohne dabei lächerlich zu wirken.

8. Toy Story 2 (1999, Disney/Pixar)
   Meine Meinung: Ein weiterer Pixar Film und ein weitere Meisterleistung der Schmiede. Es gelingt zwar selten, aber der zweite Teil von Toy Story übertrumpft das Original deutlich und bietet Familienunterhaltung auf höchstem Niveau. Da kann man sich definitiv auf den dritten Teil nächstes Jahr freuen.
9. Bambi (1942, Disney)
   Meine Meinung: Bambi gehört zweifellos in diese Liste, da es Disney hier gelungen ist einen Familienfilm zu veröffentlichen, der sowohl die Kleinen als auch die Großen zu Tränen rührt. Eine wundervolle Pioniersarbeit für zukünftige Werke.
10. Coraline (2009, Universal)
    Meine Meinung: Für mich ist der Film einerseits ein grandioser 3D Film und zugleich ein wundervoll gruseliges Märchen mit grandiosen Ideen und einer starken Bildsprache. Der Film richtet sich eher an Erwachsene und wird für die meisten Kinder zu grausam sein, was dem Film aber nicht schadet.

11. Dumbo (1941, Disney)
    Meine Meinung: Ein weiterer zeitloser Klassiker aus dem Hause Disney, welcher wichtige Werte vermittelt. Kommendes Frühjahr erhält der Film eine Neuveröffentlichung auf DVD und Blu-ray, worauf sich alle Disney Fans freuen dürfen.
12. Das große Rennen von Belleville (2003, Les Amateurs)
    Infos zum Film: Ein skuriller Film rund um die Tour de France und alte Damen, die versuchen den entführten Champion zu retten. War 2003 sogar als bester Animationsfilm für einen Oscar nominiert.

13. Chicken Run (2000, Aardman)
    Meine Meinung: Für mich zwar nicht so stark wie “Wallace & Gromit”,  aber dennoch eine gelungene Komödie. Für mich bleiben aber “Wallace & Gromit” und “Flutsch und weg” führend in Sachen Aardman.

14. AKIRA (1988, Toho/Bandai)
    Infos zum Film: Für viele Leute der Inbegriff des Steampunk Anime und einer der ersten Animes, der auch in westlichen Gefilden Erfolg feiern konnte.
15. Der Gigant aus dem All (1999, Warner Bros.)
    Meine Meinung: Der beste Film von Brad Bird, der heute fast ausschließlich für Pixar arbeitet. Es ist wirklich Schade, dass der Film so unerfolgreich war, was aber wohl an der ernsten Thematik des Filmes liegt. Der Film hat alles: Humor, Dramatik, Spannung, Atmosphäre und Anspruch.

16. South Park der Film (1999, Warner Bros./Paramount)
    Meine Meinung: Der Film ist einfach nur grandios und bietet bitterbösen Humor. Kein Film für Kinder, aber ein Meisterwerk für Erwachsene. Matt Stone und Trey Parker haben die TV-Serie wirklich grandios auf die Kinoleinwand adaptiert.
17. Kikis kleiner Lieferservice (1989, Studio Ghibli)
    Meine Meinung: Ein wundervolles Feel-Good Movie aus dem Hause Studio Ghibli. Der Film ist zwar an sich nicht spektakulär, macht aber dank der sympathischen Charaktere sehr viel Spaß. Gehört definitiv in meine Top 5 der Ghibli Filme.

18. Pinochio (1940, Disney)
    Meine Meinung: Pinochio darf natürlich nicht fehlen, da er wie Dumbo oder Bambi ein Meilenstein des Animationfilmes ist und zahlreiche wichtige Werte vermittelt.

19. Waltz with Bashir (2008, Arte)
    Infos zum Film: Ein animierter Dokumentarfilm über die Erinnerungen von Soldaten an den Libanon Krieg.

20. Ghost in the Shell (1995, Production I.G.)
    Meine Meinung: Ein weiterer Meilenstein des erwachsenen Animationfilmes, welcher eine düstere Zukunftsvision zeigt und dabei neben den zahlreichen Actionsequenzen auch genügend Anspruch bietet.

Eine Liste die natürlich nicht Vollständig ist und an vielen Stellen sehr überrascht. So ist es erstaunlich, dass es kein einziger DreamWorks Animation Film in die Top 20 geschafft hat. Gebt einfach einen Kommentar ab und sagt eure Meinung zur Liste.

10. Toy Story (1995)

To be honest, most of the reason that Toy Story is in this top ten is its status as a milestone of animation. Toy Story truly is the most influential animated film since Snow White, ringing in the new trend of computer animation. However, that is not the only reason it made the list. Toy Story is really a delightful movie with colourful characters and a timeless essence which I believe will preserve this movie as a classic for kids of all ages.

9. Spirited Away (2001)

Hayao Miyazaki is the master of animation, and Spirited Away is one of his masterpieces. Spirited Away proves that there are things that can be done with animation which probably could never be pulled off in live-action movie making. Spirited away is pure, unadulterated child’s imagination laid out for us on screen, and it blew audiences away, even becoming the highest grossing film in Japanese history.

8. The Iron Giant (1999)

Over the past decade, non-Disney animated films have really taken hold and found a niche of their own. However, before this explosion of new animation, non-Disney cartoon movies were few and far between. And really good non-Disney animated movies were even harder to find. However, hidden between the Toy Storys and Lion Kings and Shreks is a wonderful little movie called The Iron Giant.
The Iron Giant may seem like a simple tale, but it is handled brilliantly, complete with real character relationships, themes which may be a little hard-edged, and a wonderful emotional core. If you have not yet seen The Iron Giant, do yourself a favour and watch it.

7. Shrek (2001)

Now, lets be straight here: I am not talking about the ridiculously over-commercialized sequels. I truly believe that the very name of Shrek has been muddied by the greed of the studio and filmmakers involved, and that the magic of this original first movie has been hidden from view.
Shrek was a movie which defied the regular story tale approach that most animated movies (Disney especially) had been taking. The computer animation itself was very refreshing at the time, and the sharp humour mixed with the emotional impact made for one fantastic film. Its too bad that when we see the lovable green ogre we no longer see this great movie, but instead we see the dollar signs of greed, the Burger King promotions, and the terrible sequels riddled with pop culture junk. Just don’t forget; Shrek at one time did mean something.

6. Wall*E (2008)

It may seem presumptuous to put a movie which is still so new onto this list. However, Pixar has been the powerhouse of animation over this last decade, and this story of a funny little robot who would find the lost human race is their absolute masterpiece. Fro the nearly-silent and brilliant opening to the exciting conclusion, WallE has some really deep themes sinking in, which remaining very light-hearted at its center. An absolutely brilliant piece of work.

5. Fantasia (1940)

Fantasia seems like it was really an experiment on the blending of animation with music, with audio and visual swirling together in one harmoniously package. Well, it worked. And now Disney’s cartoon opera has a firm hold in the history of film-making and is a landmark in animated feature films.

4. Princess Mononoke (1997)

Perhaps the most inventive country in animation is Japan, and there is none greater than Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki hand draws each frame by himself, an incredible feat in this age of production-lines. Princess Mononoke is Miyazaki’s masterpiece; an epic full of adventure, romance, fantasy, heroes and villains. It has a heavy theme involving the conflict of the industrial age and the need for ecological balance with nature. It is a brilliant film in almost every regard, and perhaps the greatest from the most imaginative and daring country in animation today.

3. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1938)

Snow White is the Birth of a Nation for animated films. Walt Disney’s landmark film brought full-scale, feature-length animation to the forefront, and he then reigned on the animation throne for many decades to come. Snow White is beloved by many and has a unique place in the annals of film history. It was a spectacular achievement of its time, opening to doors to what animation can truly do to the movies.

2. Beauty and the Beat (1991)

In the late 80s/ early 90s, Disney was undergoing a new renaissance. They had found new life in a series of high quality stories amidst great-looking animation. The Little Mermaid kicked off this new golden era, but it was Beauty and the Beast where it hit its peak. The art in this movie looked amazing, while the characters were fully realized and the story flowed perfectly. Beauty and the Beast was the first, and so far still the only, animated movie to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, and for good reason.

1. Pinocchio (1940)

Snow White may have started off Disney’s reign on the throne of animation, but Pinocchio was his crowning achievement. Many film critics around the world recognize this movie as the best that animated feature films has to offer. It was able to take what worked from Snow White and fix everything that didn’t work. And think about how iconic some of the themes and parts of that movie are now, especially the song “When you wish upon a star” and Jiminy Cricket, the physical representation of Pinocchio’s conscience which has become a song of inspiration for many people over the years. The tale is a classic morality tale played out through wonderful storytelling and fantasy.

Once, when waiting in line for the Tower of Terror at Disney World, a young child in a carriage was crying.  The child’s parents and older brother (who was about 6 and in a Woody costume from “Toy Story”) were attempting to comfort him.  In a dick move on my part, I went up to the child and said “What are you so afraid of, it’s only the Tower of Terror!”  The kid cried louder.

 It was at this moment that I noticed the child I had just scared shitless had Downs Syndrome.  As the entire family stared at me, I suddenly felt extremely awkward and felt the best thing to do was walk away.  Quickly.

Não conheço o Luwig pessoalmente, mas acompanho seu blog há anos. Ele costuma escrever verdadeiras epopéias, pois todos os seus posts são fundamentados até a última gota. Fazer chamada oral com o cara seria perda de tempo: é perguntar e já ouvir a resposta. Enfim, apesar de não ser um apreciador constante de quadrinhos dá gosto ler o que o cara escreve, porque dá pra sentir a saliva escorrendo pelo canto da boca e caindo no teclado. Ele não é freqüente, mas quando decide escrever, escreve mesmo.

E um de seus últimos posts ele me convidou a participar de um Meme, coisa que não acontecia há tempos e vale muito a pena. O último Meme que participei foi excelente e liberou um monte de filmes interessantes que estão desaparecidos. Precisamos fazer mais disso.

O fato é que na cabeça do Luwig apareceu um post sobre mulheres. Não sei se foi influência de sua musa inspiradora, ou se o cara é um romântico mesmo, sei que, pra variar, destrinchou como ninguém o assunto. E cá estou eu, na encruzilhada.

Como o tema é aberto, não acredito que escreva bem sobre quadrinhos como o Dogg (afinal, nem é tanto a minha praia), portanto decidi desmembrar minhas cinco mulheres no segmento de cinema, mais especificamente mulheres da Pixar. Por que escolhi os filmes da Pixar? Porque os conceitos e roteiros mais interessantes em animações para grande público apareceram de lá, e o tratamento dado à tridimensionalização dos personagens não fica apenas na esfera gráfica. Há personalidade, carisma, vida em cada um deles, sem exceção. A Pixar nivela por cima: se vai fazer um filme, vai fazer um puta filme. E a cada lançamento perdemos o rumo de onde a Pixar vai (ou pode) parar. E as mulheres da Pixar não são diferentes. Deixando de lado qualquer estereótipo, elas tem relevância similar a qualquer personagem principal masculino, o que já é um diferencial. Elas são fortes, respeitáveis e, principalmente, imprescindíveis para o homem, como uma força motriz, um ímã de certa maneira, um elemento chave para o bom andamento da trama. Por isso e por mais centenas de motivos, apresento aqui as minha 5 mulheres da Pixar.

5) Dory / Procurando Nemo

Procurando Nemo nem é meu filme favorito da Pixar, mas é inegável o respeito que ele exala. É uma história moderna, tocante e ágil sobre a busca da paternidade e da amizade. Mas Marlim não conseguiria atingir seu objetivo sem Dory, a peixe com perda de memória recente. E como ela embarcou nessa parceria? Simplesmente falando sim a uma necessidade. Assim, na bucha, confiando plenamente. Alguém precisava de ajuda e ela fez o possível para ajudar. Confiança é algo que, apesar da prudência, deve ser ensinada desde cedo, pois é através dela que conquistamos os melhores amigos, fazemos os melhores trabalhos em grupo e estruturamos nossa família. E Dory foi até o fim para ajudar Marlin a encontrar Nemo, independente do que ele pudesse dizer ou pensar. Com seu bom humor e fé, ela mostrou que tudo dá certo no final. E o final poderia ter sido muito diferente sem ela. Compre aqui.

4) Jessie / Toy Story 2

Jessie é obstinada o suficiente pra roubar o papel de todo mundo em Toy Story 2. Sua história triste nos fez pensar nos inúmeros bonecos que deixamos pra trás no processo de crescimento. E ela fez isso sem nem ao menos pestanejar na alegria e na vontade de continuar, o que fez com que até Woody pensasse melhor sobre o que seria mais certo. Jessie leva o quarto lugar por ser o que qualquer mulher precisa ser pra deixar um homem bem: ser feliz.

3) Boo / Monstros S.A.

E quem diria que a pequena Boo deixaria o praticamente impecável Monstros S.A. muito melhor do que ele já era? Boo é a mais tridimensional das crianças já desenvolvidas na história do cinema, e ela nem existe. Toda a alegria, versatilidade e amizade estão ali, expressas nos olhinhos redondos e no sorriso gigante que ela expõe no rosto. Sem ela, Mike e Sulley nunca teriam se aventurado a enfrentar seus medos e a entender que não há melhor remédio contra o medo que a felicidade. Um filme excepcional, com um desenvolvimento de personalidades indefectível. Compre aqui.

2) Helena Pera / Os Incríveis

E não dá pra falar de mulheres da Pixar sem citar a mulher do Sr. Incrível. Helena Pera deixou de ser uma super-heroína por amor, para se dedicar a uma família, o que não é demérito nenhum, ao contrário, mostra-se uma tarefa até mais complicada do que o combate ao crime. Além disso, é ela que segura as brigas, os desânimos e as dificuldades. Literalmente, sem ela o Sr. Incrível provavelmente estaria morto. E é por isso, pela singularidade e por ser mulher, mãe, esposa e amiga que Helena Pera leva a medalha de prata. Compre aqui.

1)     Ellie / UP

Mas ninguém tira o primeiro lugar de Ellie. Os primeiros 20 minutos de UP são só dela. Tá ali, na telona, sem falar quase nada, mas expressando o suficiente para entendermos os motivos que levaram Carl Frederikson a se apaixonar e viver um vida feliz, sonhadora e cheia de esperança. Uma mulher que soube se dedicar ao marido, a passar por cima das adversidades e a cultivar uma vida nobre e feliz, inclusive surpreende (e comove muito) até em suas últimas atitudes.

E é isso. Se todos os estúdios de animação se dedicassem ao conteúdo tanto quanto ao visual, teríamos muitos outros motivos para ir ao cinema. Infelizmente, o que a Pixar faz nenhum conseguiu ainda, o que é muito triste, pois ver excelentes animações sofrerem do sentimento de “foi legal, mas poderia ser muito mais…” frustra. E as mulheres da Pixar são tão fundamentadas e coerentes quanto o possível. Não são ideais, mas tem defeitos e virtudes na dose correta.

E todo Meme tem a passada de bastão. E convido os sensacionais Vini, do Submundo Mamão, para a Cecília do Cenas de Cinema e para o Queiroz, do Escritos Malditos.

The Princess and the Frog represents Disney’s return to their filmmaking roots – the animated musical. We’ve already had a teaser trailer:

And I think all look very promising indeed. It’s obviously not a traditional retelling (though it seems not to be quite as subversive of fairy tale conventions as Shrek or Enchanted, which is a good thing to my mind).

I remember when I first heard that The Princess and the Frog would replace The Frog Princess, the original working title of the film, I was a bit skeptical. I felt it was a bit bulky (clunky – ?) and perhaps less effective, as the film is a kind of riff on the end of the original fairy tale and now that reference is lost. I also feel its too obvious a ploy to tap into the “Beauty and the Beast” dichotomy that is inherent to the content of the film and is therefore, perhaps, a bit too spot on – a bit too academic, if you will – and I suppose that is what caused my uncertainty about it. But… it’s grown on me, especially after seeing the publicity material.

Of course, this will also mark the first African American princess from the Disney studios and the as yet unreleased film has been followed with controversy in this regard. Take, for example, this article in the New York Times: “Her Prince Has Come. Critics, Too” by Brookes Barnes.

The article says, “For years, Disney has been lambasted by some parents for not having a black princess. Now, some of those same voices are taking aim at the company without seeing the finished product.” Some of the criticism is just ridiculous; one of the most damning comments seems to be this one, from Angela Bronner Helm at Black Voices:

Disney obviously doesn’t think a black man is worthy of the title of prince. His hair and features are decidedly non-black. This has left many in the community shaking their head in befuddlement and even rage.

The New York Times goes on to report that “Prince Naveen hails from the fictional land of Maldonia and is voiced by a Brazilian actor; Disney says that he is not white.” They also say that there has been some backlash against the backlash. This quotation from Levi Roberts:

This is one of those situations where I am ashamed of the black community. Are we being racist ourselves by saying this movie shouldn’t have a white prince?

That just brings us full circle, doesn’t it?

Poor Disney seems to be in a “damned if they do, damned if they don’t” position with this film. I understand that people would like something like this to be racially sensitive, but some of the points raised just lack any kind of perspective. Thank goodness there seem to be some rational people in the middle ground too.

Lastly – the score, by Randy Newman. Newman had an interview in Variety yesterday in which he discussed the film:

New Orleans in the early part of the 20th century – the setting of Disney’s animated The Princess and the Frog – is territory that composer Randy Newman has trod before. “I’ve been dredging those 30 months I spent in New Orleans for all I could in my life,” he quips, referring to the summers of his youth.

I’m very interested to hear what the full score is like, especially as it seems to offer an alternative to the kind of songs Newman has created for the Pixar films.

I think what Randy Newman has done for the Pixar films – created a score and one song that epitomizes the thematic core of the film – really works for those films, which are all fish-out-of-water cum coming-of-age films told in a fairly loose, comedic style. Of course, there are slight variations to the ‘Newman formula’ – Toy Story, for example, has three songs but still focuses on one big thematic number, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”. Toy Story 2 of course featured “When She Loved Me”, which is a very moving song, not least because of the vocal performance by Sarah McLachlan. But it’s still a voice-over reflection on an event long after the it has passed.

While I think that Newman’s Pixar scores (for Toy Story, Toy Story 2, A Bug’s Life, Monsters, Inc and Cars) have largely served those films and the mode in which those films tell their respective stories, I feel that they are more obviously functional as scores – serving the action on screen literally without delving too deeply into the metaphorical, emotional core of what’s going on, in the way that Alan Menken did particularly well in his scores for The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. I don’t really have any problems with this, as I think the kind of scoring created for these projects is appropriate to the films, although, as some have mentioned around these boards before, there tends to be certain sameness that has characterizes the songs, which was also evident in Disney’s part-live action part-stop motion version of James and the Giant Peach, which also featured songs by Newman. The only songs that really came anywhere close to working in that film were “My Name is James” and “Family” but even these weren’t consistent in the quality of their lyrics. The rest of the score was disposable. My reaction mainly was – nice tunes. But I think an animated musical needs something more than that, score that is a truly intrinsic element of the film as a whole.

But I’m glad that Newman has had to shift his mode into a different style of scoring for The Princess and the Frog and that John Lasseter (as the “big boss”) or the directors, Ron Clements and John Musker chose not to reflect something of that Pixar tone and style in this film.

I’m really looking forward to it.
