 This weeks top 5 was a little harder than usual but in the end I got my top 5. Still Janet’s “Make Me” is at the top of my list but this time the vocal club remix by DJ Dan, the space like rhythms along with  Janet’s catchy lines has me hooked as I can only think of her dancing while I listen. I also think and hope she performs a club remix of “Make Me” on the X-Factor next week to add an extra bit of buzz and exclusivity for the UK

Coming in 2nd is Rihanna’s “Rockstar 101” featuring none other than the legendary Slash as guitarist, it’s RiRi’s bad girl lyrics like ”6 inch walker, big sh*t talker” and ” baby frisk me good check my panties and my bra” which has got me playing this day and night.

back again with another oldie of the week. this time I was very inspired by the jazzy stuff coming from labels like ninjatune, mo-wax and wall of sound records and the allover smooth n relaxed vibes from releases of f.e. luke vibert, amon tobin, funki porcini, clifford gilberto, etc.

one example of my jazzy experiments is the 1998 tune ‘allthatjazz’ – a lush groovy swingtune flavoured with livedrums. I sampled a lot of fragments from old jazz records, like trumpets, trombones, bass, etc. – enjoy and have a chilled sunday!

I got contacted By Ira a couple of days ago about his new Lp coming out 1st December. At the beginning of his professional music career Ira has a whole lot more to look forward to, and hopefully he keeps making good tracks that we can publish. DIY albums have always been and are still, more than ever, the way forward.

Tune-Yards’ is Merrill Garbus. Her debut album, Bird Brains, was recorded on a digital tape recorder and then mixed on Garageband and is easily one of the best albums released this year. No slick production needed. And guess what – she’s just finished touring with the wonderfully incredible Dirty Projectors. Our sources tell us that she is a joy to witness live.

The leaked singles from Cold War Kids and Yeasayer get me really excited about their upcoming albums. I know in ‘blog time,’ I’m really late on this one. The tracks, Audience of One and Ambling Alp have both been around for a few weeks. But I don’t really care — they’re really fucking good.

Cold War Kids’ last album felt a little like a sophomore slump. While their first effort, Robbers and Cowards put them on the map in 2006, the follow-up, Loyalty to Loyalty, didn’t really work out. If Audience of One is any indication of the quality of their upcoming album, they should be back on the right track.

Yeasayer is recording their new album, Odd Blood, in upstate New York. Apparently the album is named for the number of rodents they’ve had to kill in their rural studio. Nasty. Anyway, they released a single on their site about a month ago called Ambling Alp and it’s scary good. While I’m a really big fan of their first album, All Hour Symbals, Ambling Alp fires on all cylinders and is a testament to how much potential Yeasayer really has.

It’s never good to get your hopes up for an album (especially if it’s Detox), but the early cuts from these two show a ton of promise.

As I’ve noted a million times before, the fall of 1970 is where time really begins for me—when the record charts first became the calendar of my life. I heard the season like the 10-year-old I was, gravitating toward my generation’s answer to the Jonas Brothers or Hannah Montana—the Partridge Family and Dawn. But while I was buying that stuff, I was also buying “Love the One You’re With” and “Domino,” and digging “Tears of a Clown” and “Share the Land” and “Immigrant Song.” And in the lifetime since, I’ve discovered the context in which those first beloved records appeared. And there’s context aplenty on the survey from WIXY in Cleveland, dated November 27, 1970:

3. “Back to the River”/The Damnation of Adam Blessing (up from 4). A Cleveland band from the same scene that produced the James Gang and the Raspberries, the Damnation of Adam Blessing made three albums between 1969 and 1971 before renaming itself Glory and eventually disbanding. The group’s bassist, Ray Benich, has an extensive website covering his and the group’s history, in which he mentions that he did nearly 18 years in prison (1982-2000) for a domestic shooting, “despite having no prior criminal record (except for that Glory album).” You gotta respect a man able to retain his sense of humor after all that. I’ve cooked up and discarded a whole string of metaphors describing what “Back to the River” sounds like (crappy example: “like ‘Run Through the Jungle’ done by Iron Butterfly, only without the organ”), so click the link, see if you can do better, and share in the comments

10. “No Matter What”/Badfinger (up from 15). Here’s a record that loses something in pristine stereo sound. It’s meant to be processed for AM radio and blasted, preferably from a few hundred miles away, into a little speaker you can hold in your hand. It was produced by Beatles’ road manager Mal Evans, and it should have made Phil Spector proud (although it more likely made him envious and bitter).

12. “Only Love Can Break Your Heart”/Neil Young (down from . According to Young’s biographer, the After the Gold Rush album, from which this comes, was Young’s attempt to merge the sounds of Crazy Horse with Crosby Stills Nash and Young. If so, “Only Love” comes pretty close. Here’s Young with Graham Nash and David Crosby performing it live in 1970:

Plus, it’s a waltz, which you hardly ever got on the Top 40.

13. “You Better Think Twice”/Poco (down from 10). The clip below is from a TV series called Something Else, hosted by comedian/impressionist John Byner that ran in the early 70s. It featured an impressive array of then-current stars, many of whom didn’t appear on television much, including the Flying Burrito Brothers, Canned Heat, the Ides of March, Richie Havens, Melanie, the Turtles, CCR, Taj Mahal, and others. I’ve been able to find precious little about this show online, but I intend to keep looking.

19. “Be My Baby”/Andy Kim (up from 27). This is one of the greatest made-for-AM-radio productions of all time—the echo, the ringing piano chords, and the skittering bass guitar, and that’s just the first 10 seconds. And whatever’s playing the instrumental break before the final refrain—string section? Theremin?—came sizzling out of your little speaker and straight into your brain. I can’t hear it without thinking about how WLS sounded at night—or about the 10-year-old me, listening on one little speaker, 135 miles away.

I finally got around to picking up and really giving …Endtroducing a listen after I found it Black Friday’d at Best Buy for $6.99. I finally had time to just plow through it on my drive back to school today. My highlight of the album is still the same one jamesob used to get me into DJ Shadow in the first place, Midnight in a Perfect World, which if you haven’t gathered at this point is posted above.
