Working a booth at a trade show seems like an art. There are some people who are really good at it.

Working a booth at a trade show seems like an art. There are some people who are really good at it. But is this an art? Or can these skills be learned? When I started out in the product management profession, like most people, I too believed that it was an art. However, over time, I have realized that it is something that can be easily learned and with practice can be the art that you are known to be very good at. So, what does this skill entail and how do you get good at it? Here are some things that I have learned.

Know the audience: Each trade show is different. A banking show is different from a healthcare one. Even within technology – a virtualization show is different from a storage one. It is good to know more about the people who will be attending the show. A show that attracts CEOs and CIOs is very different from the one that attracts more operational technology talent. Knowing who is going to be there at the show can help you prepare to make your pitch in the right way.

Learn to speak the language: Because people in each of these different areas have their own jargon, being good at trade shows entails being able to learn these different business dialects quickly and being able to speak them. You can learn them by attending sessions and seminars at the events and by speaking with people who work in that space. Prepare in advance and you’ll do great.

Take strides: Don’t just stand at the booth waiting for people to walk by. Instead, go out into the aisle and say hello to people. Smile at them and wish them. Ask them an innocuous question that may get them to stop. Pay someone a compliment. Get them to notice you and want to talk to you. Don’t be a creep and scare people off. But be approachable, friendly, and encourage connections.

Have a conversation: Just talking about technology or only about your product turns people off. Instead be folksy and talk about other things. Ask questions about where people are from, what brings them to the conference and hold their attention by listening. They will oblige you by asking you questions about your booth eventually. But make conversation. Don’t push for a sale.

Know your stuff: Nothing turns people off as much as not getting an answer to a basic question. So, know your product well. You may not have all the answers to all the questions. That is fine. If you don’t know the answer to any question, take the persons contact information down and offer to send him an answer. And if you do make the offer, make sure that you keep to it.

Be prepared to be rebuffed: Not everyone will stop by, listen to you or reciprocate your best gestures. And that is fine. Don’t be put off, offended or affected by anything. If someone has been having a bad day or is in a vile mood, there is very little that you can do. Don’t let them get to you. Carry on your work with a smile.

These are small tips that I can give you based on my own experiences. I am still learning with every trade show that I attend and hope to add to this list as I learn new things. In the meantime, if you think you have something to tell me about the topic, how about you leave me a quick comment?

One of the biggest mistakes when a fashion brand goes to the USA is to believe that he can be focused on one thing only: “just give me a buyer” or “just give me an agent” or worse ” I don’t have time for training”.

What is it? There seems to be a whole range of lighting software on the market that you can use to c

What is it?

There seems to be a whole range of lighting software on the market that you can use to control your lighting system with by just connecting a DMX dongle between your PC and a bunch of dimmers or movers. Some of this software is free and you just purchase a dongle from the relevant Software Company. Now a lot of the software is wonderful and you can control a multitude of moving lights from a whole host of manufacturers. Supposing you only want to drive dimmer racks and the occasional DMX intelligent light. Most of the software out there is really geared to the moving light market but there is one piece of software that I have been using over the last 2 years that should fit the bill for those that want to control dimmers as their primary focus. The software in question is called PCStage . This is a PC lighting software solution that works with its own USB to DMX device, the software is designed to work only with its own device. The software is available online for free. So once you have downloaded you can give it a try it out, and if you like it you can then purchase a PCStage USB to DMX Device that outputs a single universe of DMX.

Now some of you may have heard of this software, as it has been around for a while. There is also a large group of people that are active in supporting the software and writing a variety of plug-ins to make the software even more versatile. This software does not require much in the way of resources from your pc. It runs on most windows platforms. It has a very simple install and auto detects the device. If you are using a 64-bit system you will need to download additional drivers for the dmx device to be recognised. Now once you have installed the software you will notice that it is rather old fashioned looking and The software is in fact quite versatile and the more you explore it the more you realise how powerful it is. One of the neat features of this lighting program is that you can also get it to play all of your shows audio files. In fact you can play up to four sound files simultaneously. Great for those shows with only one operator.

So how does it perform?

Well once you have got your head around how it operates it actually works quite well. The major huddle that might crop up if you are coming from MAXIM style lighting is desk is that when you have set up the lighting state that you want it stores the information as a cue and a preset. The preset is essentially a snapshot of the desk output and the cue recalls that and adds things like timing, audio triggering and any other function you may want to control. Now the benefit of this becomes more apparent the more you use it. With some shows you are likely to re-use a lighting state, well with this software that is really a very easy thing to do. All you need to do is tell it. When making a cue you even have the ability to make complex split cues. You can also record chases, have sub-masters do your normal soft-patch functions. It has all of the features of a normal lighting desk.

As with any software it takes time to get familiar with how it works, but the more you use it and experiment with the more you can achieve. This software is ideal for those productions that only have one operator, as they can at least control audio and lighting with the press of the space bar. Ideal for touring type shows. There is support available from the manufacturer and there is an active community of users willing to help.

There is also a range of plugins that are available that extend the capability of the software. Plug-ins that can control CD-audio, ASIO sound cards, multi-track playback, and executable commands for PowerPoint shows. So with a little bit of work this software package is very suited to small venues, schools, touring shows and the like. In fact you are more and more likely to see this system being used in professional situations, Bob Weatherly, Production Manager, for Patch theatre (internationally recognised children’s theatre company) uses this system for all of their shows, whether touring Australia or the rest of the world. They are not the only ones using this software professionally.

Would I recommend it?

Yes I would. It is very reliable and does not a very powerful pc to run the software. It takes some time to get familiar but it works well. Great for schools(every student can have a copy to learn on), community theatre groups, and even professional companies. The average lighting techie should be able to get a show up and running in no time, and the beauty of this software is that you can play with it without having the DMX box.

We had a great time at the show and met so many fun new people, as well as had a chance to catch up with old friends & our sales rep force. We look forward to seeing you again next year, and thank you National Restaurant Association for another great show!

What a great few days for Marian Heath!! Our booth has been packed through the entire show and the aisles of the Javits Center are filled with our one of a kind tote bag. The buzz about the bag was out there and attendees were not shy, I was approached several times with “That’s the bag I’ve been looking for!”, “Can I please have one?”, ”I’m so happy I found this bag!!” Everyone is loving it and all that we have to offer at our booth. If today is your day to attend the show, don’t forget to grab your tote and remember if you aren’t able to attend, visit our Facebook page and let us know how you would use the tote for your chance to win 2!

To make things even better, Edible Arrangements, who is a vendor partner of ours, has been delivering a beautiful fruit bouquet and a platter of chocolate covered strawberries for the crowds to pick at while roaming the booth…and I might have picked at it myself while I was there (shh!). FTD Flowers, another vendor partner of ours, helped us find a local florist who delivered us the most beautiful bouquet that is making for a great statement piece in our booth.

After opening day at the show, our team headed to Chelsea Piers for the 25th Annual LOUIE Awards Gala. We were up for 5 awards and we brought home a LOUIE in the Friendship/Encouragement $3.50 and Below category!! It was really exciting to see our name on the screen waiting to see if we had won, and you better believe that when our name was announced our table was cheering louder than any other table in there! Congratulations to our entire team and to all of the other LOUIE Award winners this year!

All in all this entire weekend was a really great experience for me, and I am so happy I was able to join my team at the National Stationery Show. What an incredible time!

Until next time, New York,

Welcome one and all to the wrap up of the ASTD international conference and expo. It was an exciting

Welcome one and all to the wrap up of the ASTD international conference and expo. It was an exciting first day, with lots of vendors hitting the entire training spectrum.

Please note that the text might be squished since I am writing from the WordPress app.

First day cool product of the show

Leapfactor

Ideal for sales training and point of sales

It’s a mobile app, that comes as a shell

You add your content, drag and drop, add video, images, etc.

The look and feel sort of reminds me of an online magazine

Your app has your name on it and works with iOS, Android and Blackberry, both smartphones and tablets

Comes with online/offline synch

You can track number of times people open it, use it and even add folks to it

Frustration Factor

Why hasn’t ASTD figured out how to do things right. Gripes abound in this year’s show. Here are my favorites:

Numerous vendors were unhappy that they had to pay $700 a day for Wi-Fi, that didn’t work most of the time or was slow. One vendor who spent $5,000 on their booth, thought the $700 a day fee was obscene and declined. Smart move.

They ended up synching their computer to their 3G smartphone. Other vendors weren’t so lucky. As noted those who did Wi-Fi complained of slow speeds and issues with it working inside the expo floor

Bar code blues. Some people, including myself, had an e-mail with a bar code you could scan at the badge booth pick up. Supposedly it was to speed up the process. I heard from plenty of people that the barcode didn’t work. I can attest to that.

ID please. Ok let’s add a another worthless level to registration. In order to get your badge you had to show a photo ID.

What genius thought this was a good idea? It was a pain.

Listen I’m not trying to board a plane here. Apparently there must be a huge demand for scalping ASTD badges or hoodwinking ASTD for access into their show.

Get your hot news here

Talk about some interesting tidbits. Here is what I heard and saw from day one.

dominKnow – has come out with a responsive capability, enabling you to create, edit and save a mobile look for your course. You can save it as a template too. I loved this because now you can really see what your end users are seeing with their mobile devices. You can do it all, including add video, images, etc.

SumTotal – Get ready for a new UI for the learning module. I have been told that it should be live sometime in August. It is a mass improvement compared to their current learning UI.

Speaking of SumTotal, as you may or may not be aware any of their modules can be purchased as a standalone or any combination. Talking to a salesperson, he informed me that it is rare for someone to buy all the modules. He says most start off either with learning or performance or both modules.

One huge thing I am really hating about SumTotal is their pricing model for their mobile app. If you access via the web browser on a mobile device, it’s free. But if you want to use their app with on/off synch, you pay per active user, per month. Oh and the mobile module is extra regardless if you choose the mobile app or not.

Let me get this straight. For the privilege of using your mobile app, I get to pay extra per active user every month. So if I have 100 active users in June and of those 50 of the same folks use the mobile app in July, I pay for 50 active users. For the month of June, 100 active user seats. This on top of whatever number of seats I am paying for in the platform.

Jeez, what a great deal. (just kidding).

Gamelearn – Last year’s cool product of the show is back with a new game on negotiation. I’ll be blunt – it’s fun. I love the point accumulation leader board, the multiple modules, the mentor and the graphics.

What is missing to me, is that some of the text was smaller than I would want, and it would be nice to be able to zoom in. You can start and stop anytime you are in the game, which is what I would do, otherwise it is 12 hours straight through. If you are looking for a soft skills learning game this is it.

Quick Hits

This year there are more e-learning vendors than in the past. Lots of traffic on day one, but the expo hall closed at 2:30 and I noticed that many people who had just completed their seminars wanted to come in, but could not.

What was big this year?

Besides mobile it was gamification. From soft skills online gaming to learning games on mobile to gaming in some fashion in a LMS or self contained mobile app.

I’d actually go so far and say mobile was a distant third, with LMS vendors or learning platforms coming in second. Sure many of the learning platforms and LMSs mentioned their mobile capabilities, but if you looked around their marketing placards and immediate copy it wasn’t highly visible.

What your salespeople are really doing on the floor

As usual, some vendors showed up with no demos of any kind. Better yet, the usual let me eat lunch while I am talking to you also appeared.

I also loved the salespeople checking out and reading their smartphone while in their booths. Nothing like seeing your company’s $$$ being flushed down the toilet.

But the best was the carrot principal folks. They were tossing carrot doll like things across their booth and to each other. I will say they gave me three of the carrot doll/toy like things for my dogs. Diego, Cheyanne and Milo thank you via barks.

That’s today’s wrap up. More to come tomorrow with another blog post.

Right now, this phrase is employed in unique contexts. In small business, which is puppy-consume-dog globe, in which competition is prepared to perform dirty tricks to steal your clients, survival depends on many components like brand promotion, product visibility, product USP, sturdiness, selling price, amongst other individuals. Corporations need to devise and apply a very well believed out and planned tactic in purchase to beat lower-throat competition, do brand constructing and raise their market place share.

Participating at trade shows is usually an integral aspect of promotion campaign of both major and small players from any business. Organizations do invest significant amount each year in trade shows for carrying out brand promotion, promoting and promoting goods, advertising new and existing products and construct buyers. Although there are different mediums to market place solutions/companies, trade shows is one of the most powerful strategies to reach your targeted audience and straight talk with them.
Nevertheless, to make optimum response from a trade show, a appropriate planning really should be in location. Before participating, corporations should have a clear reduce objective as to why they are participating at the show and what they want to achieve from it. Correct analysis need to also be carried out to get an insight about the audience going to the fair, are the site visitors your targeted audience, how many exhibitors or your competitors are participating at the show, how substantially response has the honest generated in the past, how a lot of footfalls the fair received in the previous and how several are anticipated in the participating year?

Location at the trade show is an crucial facet which any firm should not disregard. How a lot response your organization wiil get or how numerous guests will take a look at your stall right depends on the place your exhibition stall is situated at the fair. Attempt to get a stall/booth at a location which is frequented by the guests/ targeted audience. Though you may well have to shell out extra income for getting stall /booth at a fantastic location but that cash spent will do justice to your purpose of participating and you will obtain great benefits. There is no want to get a huge stall if you are short on money, even a little one will do. You can also get stall against a barter agreement with trade show organizers.

Also, the stall need to be set up only in your business/country pavilion. Say you are a carpets manufacturer / supplier from India, make absolutely sure that you get area in the pavilion the place other carpet exhibitors from India are displaying their products rather than in some other business pavilion say machinery. While this seldom occurs, but companies should be cautious about this also. New Tradeshow Displays Can Save Your Money and Make Event Marketing Picking The Ideal Trade Show Booth Choice For Your Enterprise At The Up coming Promoting Convention, New Popup Displays Save Your Time and Make Event Marketing Less Stressful, Professional Trade Show Displays Save Your Money and Make Exhibiting Selecting The Very best Trade Show Booth Option For Your Organization At The Upcoming Promoting Convention

Cameron Peron is VP Marketing at Newvem

When was the last time you went to a tradeshow?

How did you measure the impact that the event had on your business or personal goals? Attending tradeshows is more than just cruising the aisles and looking and exhibitor booths. Understanding the inherent mechanics of trade shows, executing a well-defined game plan, and measuring the results in your professional life can make the difference between a useless visit and a game changing trip.

And, of course, going to interesting shows and great places more and more often.

Attending a trade show is an investment

We exhibited at AWS re:Invent in November 2012, making a major investment to meet Amazon Web Services (AWS) users in order to help them improve and optimize their cloud infrastructure.

For an attendee the ticket price cost $1,000 just to set foot in the door. Put airfare, hotel room, and a decent expense budget into the picture and an attendee could easily spend $4,000 – $5,000. For a show attendee justifying an investment like this, both in terms of hard cash and time, is hard if not impossible to achieve. Especially when managers and other staff see an empty desk for a few days.

Or is it?

Break down the expectations from the event and consider an active game plan (both during and after the event) to measure the time and money ROI the event cloud potentially deliver. Let’s take a closer look.

There are two main areas that a trade show can show a valuable impact on the company: knowledge and deals.

Gaining knowledge

Many tradeshows offer breakout sessions to learn from experts in a specific field of work, industry or vertical. Think of an accelerated course to capture knowledge that could improve your ability to solve specific issues, learn best practices, and improve workflow analysis and overcoming issues as they come along.

But breakouts are not limited to your direct line of work.

For example if you’re on the sales and marketing side, attending breakout sessions of an IT, cloud, or IT operations event can help improve your knowledge of the everyday flow your customers and prospect are experience. Leveraging this knowledge cloud have a direct impact on your day to day operations (e.g., improving cloud availability for DevOps) or give you added insights on how to engage your customer base (e.g., understanding what factors are important for DevOps to address when improving availability).

Deals, deals, deals

The objective here is to show measurable value in starting new deal flow, accelerating conversions in the pipe, and improving value from existing business. There are a few methodologies to include in your in-event game plan to ensure you allocate the optimal amount of focused time:

Reach out to everyone related in your industry and start booking meetings
Take an assertive approach and book 15-30 min time slots based on the objective you want to achieve. Don’t stop until you get an answer.Total time investment: 50%

Book sessions with exhibitors in advance
This is important. Randomly cruising show floor booths is not a preferred strategy unless you’re open to discuss partnerships. Consider that each booth potentially represents months of planning and budget negotiation, meaning that each staff member at the booth is focused on building new business themselves. Booking time in advance will ensure a decent amount time to carry out your main objective rather than randomly pulling someone out of their booth.Total time investment: 40%

Cruise the show to understand the landscape.
Some of your time must be invested in cruising the show to better understand the landscape, identifying potential partners, keeping tabs on competitors (both future and current), and staying in touch with associates.Total time investment: 10%

Day one of NSS setup is complete! After 9 long hours and many trips to Starbucks, our booth is almost ready for show day! Our MH crew celebrated day one with a delicious family style Italian meal and a walk through Times Square; we even ended the night with a hair-raising taxi cab ride (would you expect anything different?). Now to settle into bed and wake up to do it all over again!

With sore feet and a full stomach,
