Despite the awful weather in 2012, the annual airshow at Old Buckenham was a great success. A new media partnership with the EDP publicised the show to a much wider audience and hundreds of new visitors were welcomed through the gates to witness fantastic air and aerobatic displays, browse the trade stands, admire the wonderful array of classic cars and military vehicles on show…and even stroke an Alpaca Llama or two.

This has driven the organisers to build on the 2012 success and, for the first time in the show’s history, extend the show to two days; Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June.

In order to run the airshow each year the event organisers are reliant on the generous support of sponsors. Essbee Marcoms has been requested to secure corporate sponsorship for this year’s show. The sponsorship opportunities currently available include the Title sponsor, Platinum and Gold level sponsors.

The previous Old Buckenham Airshow held in 2012 saw over 4,000 visitors, but this year with the Lowestoft Airshow not taking place, and the fact that the airshow is now a two day event, it is certain that these figures will more than double.

The estimated audience demographic is mainly families who are home and car owners based in Norfolk and Suffolk. They are typically mid 20s – mid 50s and aviation enthusiasts 60 – 75 years old, 60% male, med – high disposable income. Interests include aviation, motor vehicles and history. The website http://www.oldbuckenhamairshow.co.uk has had over 32,500 visitors with social media covering Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages. In addition to press and video coverage the organisers will be producing thousands of posters and leaflets for local distribution and the sponsors’ logos will go on all literature produced.

The media partnership with the EDP, guarantees both editorial and advertorial coverage within the newspaper and online, and as part of their partnership agreement they are producing a 56 page event programme; all sponsors will receive free advertising within this programme.

A huge coup for this year is that there will be two world record attempts on the Sunday, by O’Brien’s Flying Circus, where Brendan O’Brien, who has more than 13,000 flying hours under his belt, will attempt the shortest trailer top touch and go. The Guinness Book of Records has confirmed their adjudicator will be in attendance.

Brainchild of three Norwich businessmen, Kevin Foley, who runs two McDonalds franchises in Norwich, Devin Grosse, general manger of the Holiday Inn Norwich-North and Shawn Taylor of Shawn Taylor Racing in Norwich, The Charity Experience Race Day raised over £20,000 on November 26 2011 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC).

Following last year’s success, which was marketed via LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, the organisers felt it essential to design a new website for potential visitors and sponsors providing them with a definitive information guide to the event.

Organiser Devin Grosse, general manager of the Holiday Inn Norwich-North said: “Last year’s fundraising total was amazing considering that this event all started from a discussion about charity efforts posted on the EDP business network on LinkedIn.

The Charity Race Experience Day proved such a success that we are expecting it to be a much larger event this year and raise even more money, so it was essential a website was created to cope with the volume of enquiries.”

The website has been designed and built by another local company, Norwich based The UIM Group, who have donated all their design and programming time for free. Alex Pond of The UIM Group said: “ We liked the unusual take on a charity fund raising day and were keen to be involved to raise money for such a worthy cause. The website will make the administration processes of the day much easier and become a focal point for pre-event news.”

Held at Snetterton Race Circuit, visitors to the event will be able to purchase thrilling passenger rides around the racetrack from an impressive line up of classic cars, performance cars, racing cars and supercars. All proceeds of the passenger rides go to RMHC.

The aim of the event is to raise vital funds for RMHC, which provides free accommodation in or close to hospitals and hospices throughout the UK so families of seriously ill children can stay together while their child is being treated.

The Charity Race Experience Day 2012 will take place at Snetterton Race Circuit on Sunday 18 November 2012 from 9am – 4pm. Entry is £5 per vehicle. It will cost between £10 and £90 for anyone over 12 years of age and 4ft 10in tall. For further details please visit www.charityraceexperience.com

The Lincolnshire Show

This years Lincolnshire Show  was a roaring success, celebrating its 127th Show at the Grange de Lings Showground Lincoln.  The show took place over two consecutive days in June.  As a Lincolnshire born lass or a ‘Yellow Belly’ as some may say, it is a somewhat tradition to attend the big annual event.

THE EVENT

The event is known for it agriculture with farmers from across the country collectively bringing their best livestock to compete for best categories. Along with livestock the show is appreciated by the equestrian world with equine events from show-jumping, dressage and cross-country. With over 600 trade stands to suit all walks of life selling everything from exercise equipment to rubber wellies! A favourite attraction to the Lincolnshire is the food stalls, with lots of home-made mouth-watering food to taste and purchase. I especially enjoyed a spot of shopping in the ‘Mews’ as well as the craft, home interior tents and I even Celebrated the launch of my friends new business ‘Unreal Gardens’ Below is just a collection of pictures of my own adventures at the 2011 Lincolnshire Show ENJOY!

Public Transport

Leytonstone Methodist Church is at the junction of Leytonstone High Road and Lister Road which is 5-10 minutes walk from Leytonstone Tube Station (Central Line) and Leytonstone High Road BR Station (London Overground).

Sometimes the line-up for departure at the end of each day of a Great Vintage Flying Weekend could get rather interesting. Here we can see Air Unique’s Lithuanian-registered, LY-BIG, An-2 ‘Baltic Bear’ in front of Air Atlantique’s Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer Srs 3, G-APRS, in Empire Test Pilots’ School livery, getting ready for departure from Hullavington, Wiltshire. The de Havilland DH 85 Leopard Moth in the background belongs to Mr and Mrs Gammons, and is kept in beautiful working order. It was built in 1934, and its DH Gipsy Major 1c has kept it flying for more than 3,300 hours, a distance in excess of 400,000 miles – or 15 times around the Earth!

Why the R.E.M song title? Well, that just about sums up the Great Vintage Flying Weekend, I’m afraid. The event will (apparantly) continue in some form or other, but without any of the management structure, or personnel, which made it so unique.

I used to be drawn back each year to the UK, to whichever venue had been selected (or that Defence Estates would let GVFWE hire) just to play a small part in this unique aviation event. Terry, Peter, Chris, Col. Mike, ‘M25′, ‘Chiggers’, Julian, David and I, Ken of ‘Air Supply’, and dozens of the ‘pressed men and volunteers’ (as Terry Booker used to address us)  simply made GVFWE what it was. You could say that the whole GVFWE crew tried to live up to the motto of No. 60 Squadron, Royal Air Force, ‘Per ardua ad aethera tendo’ – ‘I strive through difficulties to the sky’.
