Hello Friends here we come up with an extension of our previous blog, “Seasonal Index……“Time is Money” Part 2

In previous Blog, we had touched upon the aspect like analysis part of seasonal patterns in predicting the future prices of the commodity.

Seasonal Index - “Time is Money” Final Part

In this Blog, we would read about that how an annual average method can be used to generate a seasonal pattern in predicting the future prices of the commodity and seasonal pattern in the year 2009.

.

Annual Average Method

The annual average method can be used to generate a seasonal pattern as well as predicting the future prices of the commodity.

.

This seasonal price index is derived by calculating the annual average price, and then by expressing the price for each month during the year as a percent of the annual average.

.

Here, the data which is used to derive the seasonal price patterns are the monthly prices taken between the year April’2004 & November’2009.

.

The monthly indexes over the years are averaged to derive a price index that represents those years.

.

An example of the technique is presented in Table 1.

.

.

The seasonal price index table suggests that the index increases from the month of June, the time the buyers enter the market with full potential & reaches the highest till the end of the year.

In The Year 2009

.

The prices movement of this year almost followed the seasonal pattern, except few months.

.

The supply constraints of lower output, as farmers opted for cotton, worked as a high base effect for the futures with a flat production figure of 8.5 lakh tonnes in 2008-09.

.

The recovery in prices was noticed owing to the unforeseen failure of monsoons & comfortable stocks of 25-30 lakh bags from last year for which guar prices traded higher all through-out the year.

.

This commodity created a history as it made a life time high, since the date of launch at national bourse, on reports that the output is estimated at 30-35 lakh quintals, down 62% due to factors like scanty rains in the major growing areas.

.

Stronger Rupee along-with volatile Crude oil prices brought some corrections in export earnings from Guargum markets in Europe/US.

.

However, upcoming demand for by-products such as churi & korma from international markets kept the millers interested in processing guar.

.

In a nutshell, if investors want to spin their money safely & stabilize their net returns, using seasonal Index can prove to be a fair advantage.

.

In a study published on Wednesday in PLoS ONE we found that testosterone had little to do with trading skill. Traders with higher testosterone did indeed do better at this type of trading, because they took more risk. But there was no link between the hormone and their trading skills, as measured by the Sharpe ratio (of which more later). Testosterone alone was not enough.

Volatility is coming back into the currency markets following the news that Dubai World is looking t

Volatility is coming back into the currency markets following the news that Dubai World is looking to default on its debts. Overnight again we see some strength from the Japanese Yen and the US Dollar.

The first setup I noticed this morning was a descending triangle forming on the AUDUSD 5 min chart and this was just above the big number 0.9000. So waited for the line of support to be broken and a close below the 0.9000 level before entering the trade. We got the close below, by 1 point, and the trade was entered but straight away the price rallied and broke back up through the line of resistance and the trade was closed for a loss of 15 points. So the first trade failed, but that is trading we know not every trade will be a winner. So eyes back onto the charts looking for another set up.

Cable was trading in a box pattern and with 7am approaching this is where I would be focusing my eyes for the next trade. We get the close below support at 7am and the trade was entered, but this time I was looking for a target of 50 points based on the box pattern, not the usual 20 points from the 7am break. The 50 point target also tied in with the support 1 (S1) level of the daily pivots. And after 20 minutes the target was hit and the trade closed for 50 points profit.

So one win and one loss this morning but still up 35 points.

Learning Points

1: Understand Risk, what is the most you could lose on the trade if it went against you.

2: A loss is a business expense, you will always get them. Learn to accept them and move on.

Quote of the day from Marty Schwartz

“I’m more concerned about controlling the downside. Learn to take the losses. The most important thing about making money is not to let your losses get out of hand.”

This has cast a shadow on a world only just emerging from the worst economic crisis since the 1930s, knocking markets from Sydney to Sao Paulo and raising questions about Dubai’s reputation as a magnet for international investment.

For India, which has tens of thousands of its citizens living and working in the emirate, the concerns are more direct: thousands of its expats staring at job losses and the economy, sharply reduced trade.

India, which gets nearly a quarter of the remittances from the United Arab Emirates and has lakhs of laborers working in the region, could be worse off than most other nations if the crisis escalates into a full-blown one like the Russian or Argentinean crises of the past.

India’s exports to the UAE stood at $23.92 billion in FY09.

It is very likely that we may see one more leg of job losses in Dubai.

The only consolation for the region is that Abu Dhabi is booming.

Indian shares and the rupee fell in sync with other global markets where investors are fleeing for safety after Dubai debt trap concerns.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty dropped by 140.50 points to 4865.05 points.

Brokers said the selling focus was more on banking and realty stocks after Dubai’s debt problems revived concerns about the global financial system and rattled markets across Europe and Asia.

Indian rupee fell 24 paisa to 46.55 against the dollar. The MSCI Emerging Markets Index lost 1.4%.

Most European indices were about 2% lower after Asia tumbled.

The Shanghai Composite Index slumped 3.6%, its biggest drop since August, and Brazil’s Bovespa Index slipped 1.1%.
Credit-default swaps tied to debt sold by Dubai rose as much as 131 basis points to 571.

Today is US Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving to all my US friends! And a nod to the markets (that

Today is US Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving to all my US friends!

And a nod to the markets (that were open) as well. With much of North America closed for the holiday, I still managed a decent gain today as the Canadian dollar was trading somewhere, and it took a beating. On the news that Dubai might blow up. Not as in terrorist blow up; but as in I-can’t-meet-my-payments blow up. Who would have thought? A year or two ago Dubai was the great new happening place – the new jewel of the Middle East, and now its the new Argentina of a decade ago. That spooked the Asian markets overnight, but really spooked the European markets later on in the day. The big ones all closed down over 3%. This sent commodities down, (except for natural gas, go figure), currencies down (against the dollar), and appears to have set up a potentially nasty morning for U.S. Thanksgiving revellers – especially with potentially thin (probably thicker now) trading tomorrow. It will be worth watching Asia tonight.

I’m covered; still have lots of short ETFs. To me, equities and oil have have had a decidly soggy tone over the past couple of weeks despite trading near the rally high, and I’ve had the sense that any bad news out of left field could pop this balloon. This Dubai thing might be it. Real-estate and unemployment are still major boat anchors, and I don’t think it will take too much more weight (a feather perhaps?) to push this market down again. This rally has felt surreal all along. It’s been long, powerful, and persistent, but against a backdrop of such bizarre economic dysfunction.

But, whatever. We’ll trade what comes. And speaking of trading …

I sold the HNU because I missed a signal early last week, and this kind of evens everything out. A bit more cash in the kitty if we go down, but lots of shares left to get profitable fast if we go up.

It’s interesting that my co-Scouter Steve’s best friend Brian, who flew 777’s for Emirates Airlines and was based in Dubai, left and came back to Canada a couple of weeks ago. His decision may have been fortuitous in retrospect. (I’m now trying to recruit him into Scouts; from the cockpit to the fire pit, as it were.)

Again, Happy Thanksgiving and a hearty Du-bye bye …

Update: $0 -$1500 to the monthly goal.

Overall to date: $0, not even close.

Time Left: Over 11 months. Give or take a day.

—————————————

We’re off! Well, sorta. See, today is Thanksgiving (Happy Thanksgiving), and the blog-a-roo is getting the benefit of the holiday rate here. Two posts–which is for a reason because Im stuck at some holiday party and I need to act busy. Already this blog is paying off in spades.

So the new site is up (obviously) and it took till about 1:30am to bang out the final dings. Like, a last-minute template change. Yes, I was ready to unveil when I pulled a “you-know-what?-that-just-sucks” with what I was looking at (many of you are thinking that now despite the change) and went searching for a new look. I saw this one is very customizable so it was the winner.

One thing I want to pass along to you if you want to really task yourself and start your own online gab-fest–make sure you reeeaallyy think about your profile name. See, it cannot be changed. So, when my “test blog” name could not be changed, well…I was left with starting over with copy and paste or simply waiting till someone noticed.

I chose the second, and sure enough it took only about seven hours for someone to notice.

The second reason why I went with the let-it-be is because in a year it’s going to be a hoot to look back and see the name still there. Like Im a trainee (“Earning My Ears” under our nametags at Disney) or the Student Copy of the report. You know–the goldenrod carbon copy you peel away from the top with the word “STUDENT” written diagonally in gray along the entire sheet. That’s jstestblognov.

So think it through.

Now, for our first skit.

I was doing some research, and see that the less celebrity-celebrity you have, the more access you have to the celebrity. Now most talk shows have guests who appear on their show, and I thought, hey, WHY RE-INVENT THE WHEEL, eh? So, I intended to have actual guests appear on the blaaaaagh.

The only (only?) problem is, well, this isnt exactly Letterman. My blog show here has a total viewership of about 40 (which is exciting, dammit–so, sincerely, thank you for checking it out) , so getting Tom Hanks may be tough.

Because of this, I had to be creative. So what we are going to do is reach out to four celebrities each month and see who gets back to us first. In exchange for coming on the blog I will send them three cans of Progresso soup and $7.00 in various coupons.

Now, who are the celebrities and how are we reaching out to them?

Tell you after the turkey. (wink) Enjoy your day with your (Addams) family and check in later or tomorrow. (thumbs up)

This Thanksgiving morning and for the rest of the week for that matter I had intended to post nothing on this blog. However, I had one of those “looks like more than a mere coincidence” moments as I cracked open some of my usual morning news:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/banksandfinance/6660618/More-than-1000-bankers-in-the-City-earn-over-1m-a-year-Sir-David-Walker-says.html

More than 1,000 workers in the City [London] earn over £1m a year, Sir David Walker said as he published a review that will force banks to disclose how many of their staff are on such pay.

He said that forcing financial institutions to publish the salary and bonuses of top earners would enable investors – the ultimate owners of a business – to raise questions about why remuneration is so high.
….
The report, and the Government’s swift endorsement, will alarm the City where there has already been a barrage of complaints that Sir David’s original proposals on pay were too strict and would prompt an exodus of talent from investment banks to smaller firms.

Chancellor Alistair Darling said in a statement: “Sir David’s proposals are the blueprint for how banks must be run in the future… The Government strongly supports his recommendations and will take steps to implement them as soon as possible.”

Sir David’s review was commissioned by the Government in February to explore failures of corporate governance and management of banks and other financial firms. The draft version in July proposed 39 recommendations, most of which have been retained in the final draft. However, as well as the changes to the pay proposals, Sir David’s final review has sprung a surprise on boards with the suggestion that they put all the directors up for annual election, as well as the chairman.

In addition, Sir David has remained firm on his proposals to impose tougher demands on bank shareholders designed to make them more accountable owners.
….
Similarly, the recommendation that the regulator should quiz investors who sell big stakes in the banks has also been ditched. It was criticised as being beyond the remit of the Financial Services Authority.

Other proposals include the appointment of a powerful Chief Risk Officer to the board of all banks.

There is an American version of this story as well:

The report from David Walker, former chairman of Morgan Stanley International, also proposed other measures to rein in risky activities at banks. It recommended strengthening the role of non-executives to give them new responsibilities to assess risk and payment and said active investors should sign up for stewardship duty so that they can play a more active role as owners of businesses.

“Institutional investors should be less passive and prepared to engage earlier if they suspect weaknesses in governance,” Walker said in the report. “Early preventive medicine through shareholder engagement can save everyone substantial time and money later on.”

So what has happened on the British market this morning? Just another badly timed coincidence?:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/markets/6660832/Technical-glitch-halts-share-trading-on-London-Stock-Exchange.html

Share trading on the London Stock Exchange has been halted by technical difficulties, a spokesman for the bourse operator said on Thursday.

As a result, all order-driven securities were placed in an auction call period at 1038 GMT, with all share prices currently to be considered indicative, he added.

The FTSE 100 index was frozen at 5,264.97, down 99.84 points, or 1.9pc, and while the FTSE 250 value is changing, this is due to exchange rate movements rather than price changes, the LSE said in a service alert.

In addition, the distribution of all FTSE UK Series real-time index values is also affected, the bourse operator said.

The length of the auction call period has not yet been decided, however, a minimum of 30 minutes notice will be provided ahead of the scheduled uncrossing time, LSE added.

In September last year [2008] the LSE suffered its worst systems failure in eight years, causing the share market to suspend trading for about seven hours and infuriating its users.

“Trading has been inoperative for over an hour. It has also affected platforms such as Chi-X, and Project Turquoise, leaving the entire market moribund,” David Buik, senior trader at BGC Partners said.

At least the Brits didn’t immediately resort to the “Squirrels chewed through the wires” story like the Americans did back in 1994:

What gives at Nasdaq? First it was bugs of the electronic sort, then a mammal of the squirrel variety. And now securities traders are wondering just how secure things really are on the nation’s second-largest stock market.

Technical breakdowns have caused three Nasdaq trading interruptions in the last few weeks. The most recent interruption lasted 34 minutes on Monday afternoon after a squirrel chewed through an electric company’s power line and the stock exchange’s own backup power system in Trumbull, Conn., failed to kick in.

Do you think I digress? How many times do people buy this stuff? How short are their memories?

Do you still remember Fall 2008 and the run up to the banker bail-out beginning here in the USA by Oct 2008? I can’t see this as just a coincidence today and I didn’t back in Oct 2008 when “The Common Chump” was posted. It’s happening again, people, and it may be weeks before you smell what the dogs have left for you on the floor under the kitchen table.

The factions don’t take holidays. But, the dangerous question I will ask today is: Why isn’t someone at the Telegraph actively connecting these dots for the public?

With the US traders away from their desks for the next two days I was expecting few trading opportunities due to the reduced volume. Oh how wrong was I, trade what you see and not what you think was spot on today.

Overnight the Japanese Yen pairs had put in some big moves, GBPJPY and EURJPY both falling 200 points and USDJPY falling 100 points. Noticed at 6am on the 5 min chart a double bottom forming on the JPY pairs and quickly placed a trade on USDJPY. Price action ran into the big number of 87.00 and started to roll over, so closed the trade for 30 pips profit.

The 7am trade on GBPUSD was then next thing on my radar, but with the two big seller candles just before 7am I was THINKING that the move had already started. But then we had some buyers entering the market giving a temporary lift to the price, but with the sellers still winning the battle of this candle, it left a gravestone doji indicating some more downward pressure ahead. So the trade was entered on the break of this candle and it fell quickly to the 20 pip target level.

The GBPUSD started to consolidate on the 5 min chart, offering another trading opportunity. Waited for the candle to close below the support level and entered the trade. Price quickly fell through my target of the big number at 1.6600 and closed the trade for 30 pips of profit.

7:35 my daily target hit and I am done for the day.

Learning Points

1: Trade what you see and not what you think.

2: The price action is the most up to date information available to traders.

Quote of the day from Warren Buffett

Wall Street is the only place that people ride to in a Rolls Royse to get advice from those who take the subway.

Hence I’m curious to know if anyone is using Microsoft OLAP for a real-time risk? – his white paper provides some performance figures for rows updated per second (“1 million rows per second”) – bit its a serious bit of hardware to achieve those performance numbers, and I suspect and order of magnitude over what the vector database chaps need.

There are a lot of money making opportunities available, but most people don’t bother to think outsi

There are a lot of money making opportunities available, but most people don’t bother to think outside the box. Instead of finding a niche market that isn’t saturated, individuals choose to follow in the footsteps of others. Whatever money making opportunity has the most information in Google, they will most likely try to pursue. Of course, chasing a profit in a market that is saturated simply isn’t the right way to go about things.
Instead, why not take the time to research markets that are not as saturated, and offer profits that exceed those of the smaller markets. So where are we going with this? Start a Forex Trading company!

Forex Trading is one of the best ways to make a huge profit in the world. It suppasses the likes of any internet marketing opportunities and is definitely a lot easier to run than the likes of an ecommerce website. Better still, as long as you offer a great incentive program, you can have people promoting your business for you. Of course, the good thing about the incentive program or affiliate scheme is that you won’t even need to pay the people marketing your business until they make a sale. This represents a low risk high reward business model.

So instead of being the person promoting the products and services, set up the products and services and let others battle it out. The affiliate markets are literally dripping with people ready to promote your products. What does this mean for you? Well, it means that you’ll never be short of people promoting your business and all you need to do is focus on the day to day running of your Forex Trading Company.
Better still; the more people that promote your products and services, the better coverage it will get. This means other affiliates will find your business and before you know it you’ll have a huge network of affiliates across the world fighting to get a sale for your company. Essentially you have a sales workforce disposable at your finger tips, constantly introducing your Forex Trading Company to new clients – what could be easier?

The great thing about setting up a Forex Trading Company is that everyone else thinks it is too complicated. For this reason they will steer clear of this money making opportunity and go for much more viable options. What they don’t know is that there are plenty of companies that specialize in the formation of these specific companies. You pay them all the basic fees and they will literally do all the work for you.
So to sum up everything we have mentioned above. If you want to be the one doing the least work and making the most money, then you should look at setting up a Forex Trading Company. There are companies that will quite happily take care of the setup. Once it is setup you need to produce an affiliate scheme, which means you won’t even have to focus on getting clients!

Mouths appear to have dropped open everywhere at the decision of the law lords on bank charges. Cert

Mouths appear to have dropped open everywhere at the decision of the law lords on bank charges. Certainly it is difficult to understand on what basis the decision was made.First let us be clear what they – appear, anyway – to have said. This is only that the Office of Fair Trading does not have legal power to investigate value for money.

What they have NOT said is whether the charges were, or were not, value for money. Nor whether the charges were fair or unfair.

Indeed, their decision is correctly being described as a technicality. In other words, no matter what the case itself is about, the manner of conducting either the case, or the matters contributing to the case, were incorrect on procedural grounds. At least their opinion is that it is incorrect in that way.

I am not a law lord; evident as it may already be to you, I want it to be clear!

But I have great difficulty in seeing how the Office of Fair Trading is not empowered to investigate value for money. This has been at the heart of trading rules and laws for as long as recorded history.

From the standards for weights and money itself, to the arcane details of contract, value for money has been at the heart of legislative process. How can fairness be expressed without reference to value for money?

I am not even sure this is in keeping with the new Lending Code!

My advice is to move your accounts away from the big banks. Many of the building societies have much more reasonable approaches. And the Co-op Bank may be another good repository for your current account. Certainly you are going to have to spend time and though reading the terms and conditions.

Perhaps we should look to a funny little comment by a correspondent on TV tonight. This was to the effect that the cost to the banks would be billions of pounds, and that was concerning the highest ranks of government.

Perhaps once again we are seeing the unreasoned triumph of the banks over the people. Welcome to the new feudalism.

Hello Friends here we come up with an extension of our previous blog, “Seasonal Index……“Time is Money” Part 1

In previous Blog, we had touched upon the aspect like what is seasonal pattern and reasons for studying seasonal variation.

Seasonal Index……“Time is Money”

Now we would see the analysis part of seasonal patterns in predicting the future prices of the commodity.

The Analysis

Crop prices tend to follow a general seasonal pattern of their own, identifying the major turning points in prices, setting their seasonal low at harvest followed by a post-harvest rally, where the supply of the crop is fixed and consumption gradually takes that supply, causing prices to rise.

However, major market shocks or powerful influencing factors like monsoon, production figures, stock levels & demand may significantly alter seasonal patterns & the prices may experience the special condition.

This is what happened with the Guar prices.

The ‘Guar’ legume plant is rain-fed monsoon crop.

Monsoon has been the decisive factor for the trend in guar futures.

The sowing period is July and August right after the first shower of the monsoon and the harvesting period is September and November.

Fresh arrivals of the crop from Haryana and Punjab begin immediately after the first week of September and continue till the month of December.

One example would be redeploying capital in Guar futures in two phases by taking selling positions from April as monsoon sets in – boosting the production levels, and buying in the month of June when the rally begins.

If we follow the price index & compare it with the actual, then it is seen that the prices have followed the path of the seasonal trend many times in this year & have given their best highs from month of June to August.

The seasonality shown in the below graphs depicts that the positive wave has given a satisfying return on investment in both of these commodities, & the strategy adopted of “Sell in April” makes this clear.
