Yesterday night we watched a movie, “Heroes of Iwo Jima.” It is an excellent movie and describes how the Marines fought and won the battle of Iwo Jima on their way to victory in WWII. A focus of the movie is the famous photograph of the Marines raising the larger flag on Iwo Jima, after another group of Marines raised a smaller flag first. It is a movie I would suggest our troops, politicians, generals and other officers should watch today, especially before they go to Afghanistan.

The movie even mentions the Marine Raiders and it reminded me of the vital role they played in securing victory. I have written Pres. Obama and my senators and representatives, along with select members of the Senate and House Armed Services committee and told them that to win the war in Afghanistan, and to win the war against the Somali pirates, we need to start up again the Marine Raiders.

The United States needs to focus on victory, especially the generals who are kept on although in eight years they have not won the war. God bless our troops and may they be led by winners when they go into battle.

2.) Marine Commandant Conway, who was previously worried about the Marines’ global carbon footprint, makes quite a big carbon footprint it seems, with Marine Brig. Gen. Larry Nicholson, and Marine Sgt. Major Carlton Kent in travels by Osprey throughout Afghansitan to Marine outposts. I don’t know why all three rode in the same helicopter or if there were security concerns. I hope the Marines they visited received a morale boost at least for all the fuel used on the flight. Anyway, here’s the story, make your own conclusions:

Many stories abound about Afghanistan with Pres. Obama getting near an announcement of his second tr

Many stories abound about Afghanistan with Pres. Obama getting near an announcement of his second troop surge to Afghanistan. He sent 21,000 troops after his 3-27-09 strategy speech. These troops are currently rotating out, at least the Marines who serve 7-month tours, and they ARE being replaced. This has been reported in the media.

The leaked news is that 34,000 troops will be sent in this second surge. With the first surge being replaced, the total surge troops for first and second surge is 21,000 + 34,000 = 55,000. I think I read that in addition to the 55,000 troops for the first and second surges; there are 68,000 troops already in Afghanistan. This is 55,000 troop surge troops from first and second surge, and the 68,000 already there. This will total 123,000 U.S. troops.

If the strategy announced is going to be the nation-building proposed by Gen.McChrystal rather than killing the enemy, the counter-insurgency manual by Gen. Petraeus states that 600,000 troops will be needed for that.

So, we will see how it all is worked out, and whether we are going into Afghanistan to nation-build (built clinics, schools, roads, etc.) or to win by killing the enemy. I don’t see how the U.S. can nation build before the enemy is killed and victory declared. I propose VICTORY before nation-building.

Links from around the Global War on Terror, the GWOT:

1.) Are there too many hired guns in Afghanistan? Excellent figures and charts:

All who love God, freedom, the Constitution, their children and those who come after, MUST do EVERYTHING it takes to stop them!

The story about Rajinder Singh in the daily papers has awoken Cllr Paul “I know everything about every religion” Crofts from his hibernation. For someone who professes to be so knowledgeable about every religion, I find it odd that he should attack Rajinder on when he chooses wears a Turban or not. Mr Crofts should be aware that a Sikh’s relationship to Sikhism and to the Guru are their own and many people have found spiritual contentment practicing Sikhism without wearing a turban.

Cllr Crofts castigates Rajinder for his dislike of Muslims. I have no doubt that had Cllr Crofts lived in India and seen his father brutally murdered and his country raped and pillaged by murderous barbarians, his own view of Muslims may be somewhat different. The reason Cllr Crofts cannot understand, feels no emotion and has no attachment on items like this is because he has no sense of home, or belonging. He does not have a patriotic bone in his body. He does not love his county, if he did he would not be encouraging its destruction and downfall.

Contrary to Cllr Crofts claims, the BNP do not hate anyone, we do not wish to eliminate anyone, far from it, we just want our country to remain British. He is the one encouraging elimination, elimination of the British way of life, our Identity, History and Culture.

CNN showed an excellent show tonight with Anderson Cooper, “Killings at the Canal”. It shows the impossible situation U.S. troops are put in when they arrest enemy fighters, then they are released shortly thereafter right back on the street to kill US troops.

The CNN reporters presented the position the American troops face in a fair manner, in my opinion. In reference to the catch and release situation, reporter Abbie Boudreau even asked a general, why US troops are in Iraq at all if this is all they do?

This show dealt with the “catch and release” in Iraq, but I have seen on other shows, a similar “catch and release” (“96-hour rule) is in effect in Afghanistan, where if enemy fighters cannot be charged or go to some legal hearing within 96-hours, they have to be released, potentially to kill or maime more U.S. troops.

The higher ups must take responsibility for this losing policy. Not only will it cause a loss in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is dangerous to our troops we send there to win a war. The policies set by the generals and politicians should be reviewed and those responsible for these terrible policies should face dereliction of duty or other charges for exposing our country to potential defeat, another terrorist attack, and endangering our troops on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I believe generals and those putting out these rules should be the ones going on patrols in Iraq and Afghanistan instead of sitting at Quantico, the Command College, in Florida, or other places not on the battlefield, and still able to make their tee off time on the golf course. Two patrols a week should be mandatory at a minimum, more if they want to get promotions, and there will be demotions or at the very least, no promotions if soldiers or Marines die due to their policies while on patrol.

There should be Quantico-Forward, Command College-Forward, Pentagon-Forward, and these generals and officers should run the patrols day after day for a REAL education, and maybe they will learn how to win a war, and to stop writing restricted rules of engagement, and catch and release policies.

The American people should not stand for catch and release or 96 hour rules on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, restricted rules of engagement, nation building, or policies which endanger our troops and our country’s national security unnecessarily. Our representatives should hear from us loud and clear that only winning policies and winning generals who lead from the front will be tolerated or promoted in this time of war. The road to promotions run through the battlefields, and patrol routes of Iraq and Afghanistan from now on should be the policy.

Video clips of the show and related information can be found at the CNN web site.

1.) Enemy shooter, (accused) Hasan, has first court hearing in his hospital room. I wonder if he will be questioned like the soldiers in the story, “Killing at the Canal?” Note in the “Canal” story the soldiers on video under investigation answered questions and had no lawyer present. Note Hasan already has a lawyer. Link:

It came out in the news that Larry Hutchins, the Marine in Ft. Leavenworth, was denied clemency by S

It came out in the news that Larry Hutchins, the Marine in Ft. Leavenworth, was denied clemency by Sec. of the Navy Mabus. In addition, Sec. Mabus is going to throw out of the Marines, the story reports, four still on active duty because he believes their presence in the Marines dishonors the Corps.

I wrote my representatives AGAIN and requested that for this reason the Secretary of the Army needs to throw out of the Army the accused Maj. Hasan, and stop his pay. I sent them the story of what Sec. Mabus is doing to throw out Marines, and I know the Army can then throw out Hasan as they do other soldiers and Marines. No special treatment for Hasan: if we can throw the four Marines out, the Sec. of the Army can throw Hasan out. It is outrageous if Hasan is even still in the Army. I can only hope he was immediately thrown out and his pay stopped but it just was not reported. So, hopefully, Hasan has already been thrown out by the Sec. of the Army. It will be unreal if he is still receiving pay, and if he was paid when the rest of the military was on Nov, 13th, 2009, he should have the pay taken back.

I can only hope that Sec. Mabus never finds himself in need of clemency or someone in his family as what goes around comes around they say, and he might not find any compassion, as he shows none in this case.

Various links from around the Global War on Terror, the GWOT, which now finds its way back on U.S. soil, where Ft. Hood was the GWOT Hotspot on Nov, 5, 2009. God bless our brave and honorable troops.

4.) Where the wheels fell off the American war effort in Afghanistan. I wrote my reps when the MARSOC Marines were attacked on 3-4-07 in response to related stories. I told them the Marines acted appropriately in a complex ambush. Millions of dollars and over a year later, this is what the first Marine Court of Inquiry in over 50 years ruled, and no criminal charges were filed against the Marines. The problem, as I see it, was that the Army general in charge threw out the entire 120 member company, not just the 30 who were ambushed, in error. This showed ineptness and weakness to the enemy who were emboldened. Since this show of weakness, when the Marines won the battle, but the generals lost the war, nobody has been held accountable for their wrong decisions. Money was paid in error to Afghans by an Army colonel who was later promoted to Brig. Gen., and turbans passed out at two elaborate celebrations with food. This was all in error, as the Marines acted appropriately. But, those who should have faced the Court of Inquiry have yet to be brought before it for justice to be served. With all the talk of “innocent until proven guilty” and “due process” for enemy combatants like the Gitmo terrorists or Ft. Hood terrorist (all accused, not guilty in court of law yet): where was this concern for the MARSOC Marines who were falsely accused and nobody seemed to show concern for their legal rights?

I wrote my representatives in 2007 that if this is how we fought a war: throwing Marines out of a war for the first time in U.S. history, then the war in Afghanistan is lost. I said we could not win by showing weakness and going on Victory Through Apology Tours. But, since this time, the weakness shown by the US leaders and the continuation of the Victory Through Apology Tours with Sec. Gates and Gen. McKiernan, now with the restricted rules of engagement in Afghanistan under Gen. McChrystal, I do not know how the USA will win the war there. With these ROE, it seems impossible. God bless our US troops on the ground fighting in this most awful place, Afghanistan, under restricted ROE.

5.) Clemency denied to Larry Hutchins. Is the US giving clemency to any Afghan or Iraqi enemy fighters who may have even killed US troops or citizens? I hope no clemency is shown to them as none was given to Larry Hutchins. Let’s continue to pray for US troops as they face incredible odds in battle in the courtroom and on the battlefield.
“A Bright New Day”

November 17th, 2009

In its first four episodes, V has one of the toughest tasks in network television: it needs to both create a sense of momentum (in order to continue to engage viewers) and also leave viewers wanting more (so that they’ll come back when the show returns in March to finish its first season). What’s been clear thus far for the series is that it is sort of trapped between the two tasks, unwilling to blow its metaphorical load but also unwilling to slow things down to fully pull out the most interesting elements of the show’s mythology. It’s led to a methodical but unfocused start to the series, and unfortunately one which hasn’t yet pulled me in to the degree that it seems to want to.

The problem with “A Bright New Day” isn’t that it is doing anything particularly wrong with this premise, but rather that it feels entirely inorganic when introducing any sort of new developments. There is nothing elegant about this show, and while it (unlike FlashForward) has done well to keep its stories more inherently related to the plot of the series it has done nothing to make some of those inherently relevant stories entertaining (although parts of this episode are on the right path). The show is so desperate to show us certain things, and to have certain characters be in certain situations, that it doesn’t really care how it accomplishes it.

And while a more cheesy, 80s inspired series with some flair could easily get away with this, a show that purports to take itself seriously is going to run into a narrative brick wall, hiatus or no hiatus.

There’s effectively six storylines in this episode, which is more than any show should be forced to juggle and which over time does start to wear on the show’s narrative. What it does right, however, is that all of them eventually end up leading back to the same two sources: the Vs obsessive control of their public relations is the impulse behind both the would-be assassin and the protesting widow, along with Lisa and Tyler’s flirtations, while the rise of the Fifth Column is the result of Father Jack’s interactions with Georgie, Ryan’s interactions with Cyrus, and Joshua’s interrogation of the still alive, but amnesiac, Dale (Alan Tudyk). It allows the episode to, when we reach its conclusion, clearly divide itself between good and evil in an organized fashion, putting the first four members of the resistance together in one room and also setting up how difficult their battle will be when the Vs are proving so adept at infilitrating the hearts and minds of the common folk (represented, without question, by Tyler’s naivete).

However, the various storylines never felt like they individually achieved much of anything, albeit to different degrees. Highlights were certainly the scenes involved Morena Baccarin and Alan Tudyk, who both got some more interesting work in the episode. With Tudyk, the scenes with a once-undercover V relating their experience on Earth to an eager young V (Joshua) who’s trying to jog his memory was a nice bit of exposition (in terms of how long he’d been on Earth, and what his attitude was towards the position) and eventually a nice twist in terms of Joshua being part of the Fifth Column. It’s the first time that I think the show has legitimately surprised me with a twist like this, and while it isn’t a huge deal it does finally show a chink in the V armor – we’ve seen a traitor in the form of Ryan before, but to see them within the Mothership itself helps those scenes have a bit more tension.

And, as is par for the course, Morena Baccarin continues to really relish this role. The nature of the part means that Baccarin gets to be the star of the show even when seen from afar riding a glass elevator, but the scene where she is rehearsing the right level of emotion for her speech to the widow is the kind of sequence that does feel quite elegant. The Vs are supposed to be inorganic, so for them to be controlling things in this nature feels entirel natural, and I thought that the reveal of the entire scenario being one giant hoax demonstrates the sort of tactics they’re willing to use. The show still needs to give us more answers in terms of why they’re going about things this way, not just destroying humanity when they’re capable of doing so, but the episode at least both a) actually had Father Jack ask that question and b) delivered evidence that watching the Vs go through that process could be entertaining.

The episode sort of started to fall apart from there, albeit not entirely. I thought Erica’s storyline suffered primarily because her role felt highly random: there was nothing to really tie her to that sequence, and it seemed like it was just an excuse to have her in the V complex in order to see the secret surveillance room (where she discovers the true technology behind their jackets). The same goes for Father Jack, who was insane to run off on his own in search of Georgie and who seemed out of place even looking at the files – yes, the show eventually brought up the former point, but it seemed like it was necessary because Erica was busy fulfilling exposition and so Father Jack was forced to help bring the whole gang together. The end result may be desirable for the show, but the means they took to get there just didn’t make for the smoothest plotting in the world.

And while I find Ryan as a character to be sort of worthless, and his human storyline sort of sucks the life out of the show since we have no reason to care about his wife except for her relationship to him, I thought the introduction of “John May” (as an idea, if not as a person) is a smart one. I’m hoping the show doesn’t rush to show us this mysterious individual, because I really like the idea of the Resistance using his name (which clearly strikes fear in Anna’s right-hand man when he comes across the writing on the back of the door at Cyrus’) without actually knowing whether he’s involved. The Resistance is uniquely situated to exaggerate their numbers using the existing paranoia regarding the Fifth Column, with Ryan offering unique perspective. It’s an element that I actually think is kind of compelling, so I hope that it will be utilized in the future.

And yet, for all of those elements that I enjoy, all of them were a bit clunkily introduced, and more problematic done in combination with yet another element of Tyler and Lisa’s great romance. Even when we learn that Lisa is actually Anna’s daughter, and that she really is part of a ruse to try to take advantage of Tyler in some capacity, the storyline lacks any sort of spark. This is largely because Tyler isn’t the person we should be following in this situation, both because the character is uninteresting and because Lisa is fundamentally more intriguing. The episode demonstrated that seeing a V on the inside is valuable at a level that isn’t Anna, and the idea of focusing on Anna’s daughter as she manipulates (but, of course, eventually falls in love with and considers abandoning the cause in order to save him – give it time) is imminently more compelling. Whether the show is willing to make that switch, to completely depict Tyler as an innocent victim and limit his own angst, will depend on what happens with Scott Rosenbaum takes over, but for now the storyline is just dull.

All in all, I’d consider it a step in the right direction for the show, but one that’s more than a bit rushed in trying to set things up for next week’s fall finale.

Cultural Observations

Tudyk was great and all, but the exposition bit of there being another V in the FBI was a bit on the nose. Also, there were two act breaks that were aggressive statements from Dale, and the similarity didn’t feel thematic in any way.

What did feel thematic was a collection of scenes wherein things were just missed: there were a lot of pans from one person leaving to another arriving, and the episode picked up on it with the predictable scene where Tyler’s image showed up in the wall of screens just as Erica leaves.

Scott Wolf got put into a completely supporting position, and it was interesting how we never saw whether the Vs fed him the widow interview (although it’s certainly implied).

I’m hoping we never have to see the Mother/Son talk: the opening segment was Elizabeth Mitchell’s weakest acting on the night, and I don’t want the show to go back to melodrama after setting itself up for the “finale.”

Senator Susan Collins and Senator Joe Lieberman will investigate Ft. Hood terrorist attack. This is good news. There needs to be a lot of investigating to see how this terrorist attack occurred, and how an infiltrators enemy combatant made it to the rank of Army major. Gen. Casey should be fired for remarks he made on various TV shows and publications stating that the loss of diversity is a greater tragedy than the killings that occurred in the terrorist attack at Ft. Hood. Shameful. Should be fired.

Can any one answer: Are there more enemy combatant infiltrators spies in the ranks of the U.S. Armed Forces?

The Ft. Hood massacre just keeps unfolding in layers, more facts coming out each day and revealing the hearts of grieving Americans as the reality of it really hits us. Today, I was reading this touching post about the 14th victim, and I had not looked at it like this concerning the unborn child that was also killed by Monster Hasan.

While following some links related to the post, I came across this amazing, amazing article about President Bush and Laura and their private visit to Ft. Hood to offer comfort in the midst of this horrific event. It’s been almost a week now, and I think each day another layer is exposed in me as I move from one emotion to another, because honestly it was so hard to believe it was for real, it is taking a while to sink in. I’ve been shocked, numb, angry, and sad, and most of all outraged.

Some Hillary supporters here have expressed their admiration for what President Bush did for the country and for the devastated soldiers and their families at Ft. Hood. Here’s an excerpt and a link.

“”If you have been reading us for any length of time, you know that we used to make fun of “Dubya” nearly every day…parroting the same comedic bits we heard in our Democrat circles, where Bush is still, to this day, lampooned as a chimp, a bumbling idiot, and a poor, clumsy public speaker.

[.....]

…..we will always be grateful for what George and Laura Bush did this week, with no media attention, when they very quietly went to Ft. Hood and met personally with the families of the victims of this terrorist attack.

[.....]

The Bushes went and met privately with these families for HOURS, hugging them, holding them, comforting them.

If there are any of you out there with any connection at all to the Bushes, we implore you to give them our thanks…you tell them that a bunch of gay Hillary guys in Boystown, Chicago were wrong about the Bushes…and are deeply, deeply sorry for any jokes we told about them in the past, any bad thoughts we had about these good, good people.”"

See the entire post here. Don’t miss the comments and the Halloween 2009 post.It makes me proud to be an American and so happy to see some genuine bipartisanship, because after all, when push comes to shove, we are “One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Interview: http://www.reuters.com/article/GCA-BarackObama/idUSTRE5A902Q20091110?pageNumber=2&virtualBrandChannel=0

I keep telling people this liar does exactly the opposite of what he says. I think it’s just too hard for him NOT to lie. Here it is again folks… Obama plans to sign away US Sovereignty in Copenhagen…

US President Barack Obama has said in an interview that he may reconsider his decision not to attend the global climate summit in Copenhagen in December.

President Obama is again considering whether to come to Copenhagen in December for the United Nations Climate Summit (COP15) — if there is an indication that his presence would make a difference.

The COP15 meeting takes place between Dec. 7 and Dec 18. Obama plans to be in the Norwegian capital Oslo on December 10 to receive his Nobel Peace Prize and could hop down to Copenhagen afterwards.

“And if I am confident that all the countries involved are bargaining in good faith and we are on the brink of a meaningful agreement and my presence in Copenhagen will make a difference in tipping us over the edge, then certainly that’s something that I would do. But I’ve got to make sure that, over the next three weeks, pressure is continually applied on our teams and everybody else’s teams to actually create a framework that people can sign off on,” Obama says in an interview with Reuters.

Not Every T Is Going to Be Crossed

Asked if there was more he could bring to Copenhagen — apart from what is currently being discussed in Washington — Obama was clear that legislation on climate change would not be ready by then.

“I think everybody understands that the Senate won’t have acted on climate change legislation before Copenhagen. And our key partners, including Prime Minister Rasmussen of Denmark, the host, who’s taken a very constructive and active role on this issue, I think recognizes that not every “t” is going to be crossed and “i” dotted in the next three weeks. I think the question is (whether) we can create a set of principles, building blocks, that allow for ongoing and continuing progress on the issue, and that’s something I’m confident we can achieve,” Obama says.

“And I’m confident that the American people will recognize the enormous opportunity around a clean energy economy and the ability for us to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions,” he adds.

Have you CALLED YOUR REPRESENTATIVES, YET?!?!?!?

So the House of Representatives narrowly voted in favor of the Affordable Health Care for America Act last night. The final vote was 220-215. A real squeaker, if you ask me. The Dems needed 218 votes for the damned thing to pass, and they got 219. GOP Rep. Anh (Joseph) Cao of Louisiana voted “aye” as well. Traitor. The roll call is here.

If they just barely managed to pass this mess in the House, I’m guessing it’ll face bigger obstacles in the Senate.

My representative, Ann Kirkpatrick of District 1 in Arizona, voted “aye.” I wrote her the following this morning:

Representative Kirkpatrick,

Congratulations on your “aye” vote on the Affordable Health Care for America Act. Thank goodness there is a wise mind out there who knows what’s best for everyone in District 1 (especially hopeless, helpless little me).

I hope you’re basking in the warm approbation of President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and your Democrat colleagues in the House. I sure hope it’s worth it for you. I say this because the President, the Speaker and your colleagues in the House will be ineligible to vote for you next November.

I will be eligible to vote for you next November. But I’ll be damned if I will.

Thanks for your time. Good luck with all your future efforts to undermine the United States Constitution.

I hope with all my heart that you fail.

Time for the “Tea Baggers” to get back out on the street.
