Yes, that is the word guano in the title of this post.  As in bat excrement…as in what is in our attic!  Now, you might be asking, how do I know about the guano in the attic?  What seemed to only be a simple DIY project of replacing a light fixture, turned into 4 hours of laborious work in a cramped area in the attic that only I could fit in.  My husband guided me along the way with everything as he couldn’t crouch down to fit in the small area.  I replaced the bathroom light/ fan unit!  Hey, at least now I know how to wire a bathroom light.  Once I was in the attic to remove the old unit, I saw that it was never attached to the ductwork leading to the vent outside.  When I located the old ductwork laying under the insulation, it had multiple tears and holes and was full of insulation and nut hulls.  Squirrels?  I then had to go out to buy new ductwork to install.

Back to the guano. While I was in the attic, I checked out the vent on the side of the house at the gable to make sure it was intact before I went to Lowe’s.  I didn’t want to buy ductwork and then come back to find that the vent needed replacing as well.  It all looked fine, but then I smelled something and I shined my light over to what appeared to be black pellets on the insulation in an area of about 2 feet by 4 feet.  Somehow the inspector missed seeing this in the corner of the attic.  After talking with my husband and remembering the bats that were removed from the attic, we realized it was guano.  Fortunately, I had the receipt from the pest control company in our closing documents, and I called to inquire about the bat exclusion from back in August.  I was told that the agent representing the shyster investors said they only wanted to pay for the bats to be removed, not for the removal of guano, insulation or to replace the screen over the gable.  How disgusting!  Now it is out of our pocket to get all of this removed and repaired.  

On top of all the house repairs we are coming across from a negligent previous owner and shyster investors who wanted to cut costs, our dog was hit and suffered a broken leg, displaced hip, and pelvic fractures.  Last Saturday morning, I was on my way to an amusement park with my son.  It was raining and I was reluctant to continue the trip.  I changed my mind about going, and I called my husband to tell him we were going to come back home.  My husband had been out that morning already.  Then, I got a call from him saying he had hit our dog, Bodie, when he pulled in the driveway.  Bodie just came out of nowhere and went under his back truck wheel.  He rushed Bodie to the Vet and he remained there over the weekend.  His surgery was Monday, and I picked him up today.  He will have a couple of months of recovery.  We will have to carrying him until he can learn to use his back good leg to walk on.  He is in a lot of pain, but is still his sweet old self until I try to move him or he takes his Tramadol.  Then he growls at me.

We are praying our money pit woes will soon come to an end and that our dog will heal quickly. Picking up a growling 30 pound beagle (even with a muzzle on) really stinks.

Under siege and grappling with joblessness, factional violence and the aftermath of war, Gazans are turning to pills as they seek to escape reality. Donald Macintyre speaks to a mental health group struggling to help addicts

Abu Ahmed lived through last winter’s Gaza war in a daze. Though the district where he lives was invaded by Israeli ground forces and came under heavy fire, including the use of white phosphorus shells, he felt little fear. For by then, the 45-year-old unemployed father of 10 was popping tablets of the painkiller Tramadol to feed an ever more dangerous habit.”Of course you care about the children but [with the drugs] you forget about yourself,” he explains. “You feel less frightened.”

Manufacturers warn the maximum daily dose of the synthetic opioid should be no more 300mg per day; Abu Ahmed was taking as much as 800mg – in the grip of an addiction which has rapidly spread throughout Gaza over the last two years. As the population struggles to cope with Israel closing their home to the outside world, the sometimes violent power struggles between Fatah and Hamas, and then the aftermath of Operation Cast Lead, the Tramadol pills – smuggled in through tunnels from Egypt – have provided a welcome escape from reality.

Mental health professionals say there has been a rise in the drug’s usage in Gaza since the war. The Hamas authorities have tried to crack down on it, but the drug’s severe withdrawal symptoms means it is a seriously hard habit to break. Hasan Shaban Zeyada, a senior psychologist at the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (GCMHP) is convinced that many of the psychological problems underlying the addiction are “the consequence of living in this situation: the siege, internal division and the war”.

Abu Ahmed used to have a good job as a driver. But like an estimated 100,000 other Gazans he lost it when Israel imposed its blockade after Hamas seized control of the strip from Fatah in June 2007. “Before the war the situation was so hard. There was no work, plus I had to take care of 11 people, including my wife. All people could do was sit around in the street and drink tea or coffee.”

Depressed and suffering from headaches, he was offered a Tramadol pill by one of his friends. Several of them were using the drug for its supposed power to improve sexual performance, but for Abu Ahmed it was just a way of relieving the strain of life. “When I took it, I felt very relaxed,” he says.

But Abu Ahmed soon became hooked. Supplies of Tramadol had surged after Hamas militants blew a breach in the southern wall between Gaza and Egypt in January 2008. “You could get it at pharmacies and there were people selling it on the street,” he says. He quickly graduated from taking one pill a day, to three or four and then, though he could ill afford it, as many as eight.

A combination of a doubling in price to around £3.40 for a strip of 10 tablets and a Hamas edict (belated and far from effective) that pharmacies should not sell the drug without a prescription persuaded Abu Ahmed that he had to stop. “I tried to get away from it but I couldn’t. I had a headache, pain in every part of my body. I had to go the bathroom every 10 minutes. I was sweating. Then you take one pill and you feel better of course.”

It was about six weeks after that that Abu Ahmed– who has a history of drug abuse with hashish – turned, on the advice of a friend, to the GCMHP, the pioneering Palestinian organisation started in 1990 and still directed by the territory’s leading psychiatrist and civil society spokesman Dr Eyad Sarraj. With the help of counselling from the group’s trained therapists, as well as controlled and decreasing doses of alternative drugs like Avitan, he has stopped taking Tramadol. At the height of his addiction, Abu Ahmed was going without eating for up to three days and his weight dropped to 58 kilos (just over nine stone). Now it is back up to 85.

“They [the GCMHP] made me feel I was in safe hands,” explains a grateful Abu Ahmed, adding that the agency arranged for food aid for his family while he was recovering. “They showed respect. And they came to my house to tell my family how they should cope with me when I became nervous and angry.”

Yet for all its high professional standards, the organisation cannot help more than a minority of addicts. Although some unofficial estimates put the number of drug addicts as high as many thousands, the GCMHP’s Mr Zeyada, who trained in Tel Aviv University, will not, as a scientist, hazard a figure. But he says there is a shortage of mental health provision in Gaza and that “GCMHP cannot take responsibility for the whole community”.

Although there has been improvement in mental health awareness in the territory, many residents in socially conservative Gaza baulk at the idea of seeking treatment for psychological problems. “The level of stigma is so high,” he explains. Instead, many patients go to their GPs reporting physical problems like headaches, back or abdominal pain, and the doctors, “because of a lack of knowledge about psychological disorder,” simply prescribe analgesic drugs – of which Tramadol is a prime example – and “after a while the patients become addicts or abusers”.

Operation Cast Lead has been over for nine months, but the return to a state of siege, with unemployment at a record 45 per cent, has left a sense of “helplessness and powerlessness” among residents, compounded by the fact that there is no guarantee the war will not be repeated.

For women, the sense that they exist only to serve their children and husbands makes them especially vulnerable to depression – and use of medication like valium and xanax. For men, the feelings of powerlessness and loss of masculinity are all too often caused by an inability to protect their children in war or provide for them in relative peace. “For a father who cannot fulfil the basic needs of his children it is not easy, especially in a society like Palestinian society,” says Mr Zeyada.

Many young people, he adds, are also vulnerable. “They don’t have hope, they cannot do anything for the future. They are disappointed, depressed, helpless and powerless. They can’t find a job, they can’t plan for the future, or [afford to] get married.”

Until three weeks ago 21-year-old university student Mohammed, who had first taken the occasional Tramadol pill in 2006 after failing his high school exams, was on a daily dose of 1,000mg per day, increasingly alarming his family as he sat at his computer all night and slept all day. “You are in another world,” he says. “Even when people keep criticising you, you don’t feel angry.”

In his first month of rehab, Mohammed explains that his addiction reached crisis point when his father, who used to work in Israel and is a passionate believer in university education for his children, was tipped off about his habit. There followed a climactic row last month in which his father threw him out of the family house in northern Gaza, telling him: “If you want to go back to study, and be committed to Islam, then I will help you get out of this problem. If you don’t want to be helped, then I will take you to the [Hamas] police and that’s it.”

Mr Zeyada says another factor is the deep split between Fatah and Hamas, which there appears, once again, little hope of healing. Not only does it divide individual families, but for many Gazans it compromises their proud Palestinian national identity with a divisive factional one which makes them especially sensitive to criticism and hostility from political opponents. There are even cases from school playgrounds of conflict breaking out between children favouring (for non-political reasons) a particular colour T-shirt: yellow (Fatah) or green (Hamas).

Abu Ahmed agrees: “Even in one home you have Fatah and Hamas. That is a big problem.” But now that he feels much better, he looks back on the depression that he believes turned him to Tramadol. “Look,” he says. “Even if a person kills someone, he can still sleep at night. If he goes out and steals something, he will still sleep. But if you have children and you can’t find work to give them what they need, then you can’t sleep.”

This blog is about my feet. They hurt like hell. Det var först på åttio- nittiotalet som man på allvar insåg att de kunde missbrukas, och att de faktiskt missbrukades ganska friskt. Men slut på skrivklådan fick man inte. Nej, för de nya ofarliga antidepressiva medicinerna kom till marknaden i början och mitten av 90-talet, och samma glädje, samma barnsliga upprymdhet drabbade läkarkåren. Nu jäklar ska folk bli friska!

Idag sitter vi här lite snopna, sorgsna och desillusionerade. För att inte säga deprimerade. De antidepressiva läkemedlen hade sina aber. Biverkningar som inte var riktigt genomtänkta. Läkarna har väl vid det här taget observerat detta, men skriver ut det glatt ändå – för nu sitter de väl själva och äter zoloft till morgontidningen och kaffet. Och det är ju bra. Men vad som inte uppmärksammas på samma sätt är de människor som upplever att de mår sämre av läkemedlet. Eller är det verkligen läkemedlet som gör att man mår sämre? frågar man sig. Det kan man förstås inte veta, det kan man ju inte vara riktigt säker på, eftersom man inte vet hur man hade mått utan. Ja, men om man nu vill sluta så uppkommer vissa såkallade ”utsättningssymtom”. Ja, man säger inte ”abstinens”, för då får man doktorerna på sig, och säkert Gud också, för man får inte svära i kyrkan. Men dessa utsättningssymtom är bevisbara, och ser i sin helhet värre ut än abstinenssymtomen för de narkotikaklassade preparaten.

”Försämrat stämningsläge, irritabilitet, upprördhet, yrsel, förvirring, huvudvärk, nervositet, gråt, trötthet, känslomässig instabilitet, sömnsvårigheter, ilska, illamående och kräkningar, minnesstörning, svettningar, depersonalisation, muskelvärk, orolig tarm, panik, ögonirritation, diarré, skakningar, muskelspänningar, rysningar.”Detta är bara några av utsättningssymtomen, det finns fler. Men det är ju så, menar läkemedelsindustrin att hur kan man bevisa att en orolig tarm skulle vara ett resultat av utsättningen? Ja, det kan man kanske inte. Men som sagt, vissa saker går att bevisa. Läkemedelsindustrin accepterar vissa uppenbara utsättningssymtom, men beskyller varandra i en lång och ytterligt tråkig dialog om att ”vårt” läkemedel har mindre utsättningssymtom än ”ert” etc.. Fruktansvärt meningslöst.

Forskningen kring läkemedlens negativa verkningar står ofinansierad. För sådan är kapitalismen. Men om man bortser från abstinensen, förlåt – utsättningssymtomen, och istället fokuserar på biverkningarna, så kan man konstatera att vissa preparat har direkt livsfarliga biverkningar.

Serotonergt syndrom, är en biverkning som är konstaterad även i små doser. Hjärnan får en serotoninchock, man får feber och dör. Väldigt ovanligt förvisso, men risken finns där. (Stor risk i kombination med den ökände Tramadolen.) Betydligt vanligare är viktuppgång, vilket i längden, med tiden kan leda till hjärt- och kärlsjukdomar, och andra tråkigheter, ständig hunger, frosseri, och att bli kallad tjock för första gången i sitt liv. Andra biverkningar som är direkt livsfarliga är avtrubbning, glömska, eller att stå helt oberörd inför livet och döden, självmordstankar, självmordsplaner, självmord.

Läkemedlen har olika biverkningar från person till person, vissa kan bli hyperaktiva, andra lugna och beskedliga, ja om detta kan man läsa om i Fass, om man vill, vilken ibland blir tragikomisk i sin långtråkighet. Att ett antidepressivt läkemedel kan ha depression som biverkning är ju banalt… Och om man har stora problem får man stora problempiller, och man sitter och slutar sitt liv dregglandes på en stol inom slutenvården. Inom detta område finns det väldigt lite forskning. Hur är det med hjärnskador, kan man fråga sig? Nervskador? Vem vet? Vem vill veta? Inte industrin och därmed inte forskningen och därmed inte läkarna och slutligen inte patienterna, som sitter hjärnskadade, dregglande, på varsin stol, någonstans i Sverige.

Det främsta motivet för att använda antidepressiva och antipsykotiska preparat som behandling tycks vara att de är kostnadseffektiva. Men hur kostnadseffektiva är de egentligen?

Om man tar mig som exempel, vilket går bra, från odräglig unge till nervös yngling på Ransäters Folkhögskola i slutet av nittiotalet. Jag mådde dåligt, var deprimerad – det är ju det folkhögskolor är till för. Så jag gick till en allmänläkare och efter en kvart stod jag i apotekskön för att hämta ut ett för mig helt okänt läkemedel: Seroxat. Harmlöst och bra trodde jag. Men två år senare (2001) lanserade Uppsala Monitoring Centre ut följande femton i topp-lista på de läkemedel som har fått flest rapporter om utsättningssymtom i världen: Namnet på verksamt ämne, Rapporter om patenterat namn och kategori. Utsättningssymtom (se listan längst ner) Ja, så satt jag där med en medicin som en allmänläkare på vårdcentralen i Munkfors skrivit ut, som är världens svåraste medicin att sluta med, 2001, och med flest inrapporterade biverkningar. Några år senare ville jag avsluta min paroxetinbehandling på grund av just biverkningarna och fick Efexor istället, samtidigt som jag i mina utsättningssymtom fick Xanor mot ångesten och en 100-burk stilnoct till natten (1tb tn vb).

Så kontentan är att när man efter att ha mått dåligt av en medicin, ska avsluta sin behandling, får man utsättningssymtom som gör att man tvingas äta narkotikaklassad
medicin, som sedan i sin tur har abstinensproblematik, och att man slutar tillslut i en virvel av ångest och depression och orolig tarm. Tack för den, sjukvården! Ett, två, tre, på listan.

Min syster är ett annat exempel, som led av depression, generaliserad oro och panikångest. Hon fick Efexor, som hjälpte henne fantastiskt bra, ja faktiskt så bra att hon till och med blev gravid. Och där började problemen. Givetvis ville hon sluta med Efexorn för lilla Tovas skull, men Efexorn ville annat. Nedtrappningen gick bra, men när hon slutade helt kom utsättningssymtomen enligt ovan. Hon fick tillbaka ångesten tiofalt, och fick yrsel, illamående och kräkningar och svimningskänslor. Om man antar att ingångsdosen är 75 mg, och normaldosen 150 – 225mg, så stod min syster och delade tabletten från 75 till 37,5 till 18,75 och från det till en liten liten smula. Då gick det bra, men sluta kunde hon inte, det var helt omöjligt, och hon står på det än, 18,75 mg. Glömmer hon ta sina 18,75 mg så går det åt skogen. Och så är det för mig också, som står på 300. Skulle jag glömma ta en tablett enligt klockslaget, så märker jag av det och vill kräkas. Det känns som att se allt i slowmotion, fast snabbt. Lite svårt att förklara.

Min mamma går på Seroxat nu. Och min pappa på Zoloft. Hela min familj har alltså tvingats in på ovanstående lista. Och man frågar sig tillslut vem fan är jag? Och vem skulle jag blivit? Frågan är lika menlös som läkemedelsföretagens pinsamheter, men man håller på ändå, precis som de. Och samtidigt har medicinen räddat mig, och räddar otroligt många människor världen över. Det här är en väldigt svår fråga, och det gäller att vara nyanserad. Vilket jag inte tänker vara, för efter att ha sett listan ovan, där antidepressiva medel kommer ett, två, fyra och sju på listan, så måste man ifrågasätta vad som egentligen händer. Ifrågasätter man egentligen vad som sker?

Förskrivningen av antidepressiva medel ökar, främst bland unga. Väldigt unga. Dina egna barn. På ett forum läste jag att Efexor och Seroxat är lika svåra att sluta med som heroin. Kan vi inte bara stanna upp lite? Det här går för fort.

Det är ingen som vet vilka skadeverkningar antidepressiva medel har i längden. Vi har agerat försökskaniner. Kanske sitter jag här med ett anpassat autonomt nervsystem och en potentiell svår hjärnskada. Det skulle förklara mycket. Biverkningar som är livsfarliga. Själv gick upp 30 kilo på nio månader när jag testade den då nya, fantastiska antidepressiva medicinen Remeron (Mirtazapin). Från en ranglig student, till en uppblåst gubbe – hungerkänslorna skapade chips, som jag satt och åt i min ensamhet.

Kanske en samtalskontakt hade hjälpt mig. I Munkfors. Och kanske hade jag fått kraft att rädda mig själv. Om inte, så är det helt korrekt att göra mig beroende. En rättegång mot Seroxats tillverkare för alla utsättningsproblem är på gång i Kanada. Man varnar också särskilt för Efexor. Cipramil, som är Sveriges vanligaste läkemedel mot depression finns inte med på listan, inte för att den saknar utsättningssymtom, för det har den, men Cipramil är ett litet märke lokaliserat kring Norden, och syns därmed inte i statistiken, vilket är en smart strategi.

Så vad är det då som skiljer problematiken med benzodiazepiner och antidepressiva läkemedel? Varför är läkarna så ohyggligt rädda att skriva ut lite Stesolid till en människa med svår ångest, och så ohyggligt glada att sätta in Efexor?

Båda medicinerna är beroendeframkallande. Den ena ger abstinenssymtom, den andra utsättningssymtom. En läkare jag pratad med menade på att benzodiazepiner även ger kroppslig abstinens, och att man bygger upp en tolerans. Ja men så uppträder ju antidepressiva läkemedel också, kroppen anpassar sig, och man måste höja dosen, sen sitter man och kräks och svimmar och vill döda sig själv när man sätter ut medicinen, dessutom med en orolig tarm, jag menar – är inte det kroppslig abstinens? Jag tror att den enda anledningen är att benzodiazepiner används i missbrukskretsar. Men ska verkligen en människa med svår ångest nekas en gnutta lugn på grund av det? Ska hon få betala priset?

Ja det ska hon tydligen, och istället höjer man den antidepressiva dosen på en icke färdigutvecklad medicin där hon, i läkemedelsindustrins giriga krav på snabba miljardsprofiter, och läkarnas trögflytande klistriga okunskap, och samhällets och politikernas kortsiktiga syn på sjukvården – tvingas in i ett annat, ibland svårare beroende, och sedan får leva med biverkningarna och utsättningssymtomen; och på Apoteket säger man: varsågod! Tack ska du ha, svarar man mekaniskt och går hem och kräker ut ångesten. Sedan slänger man i sig en stor dos av sitt Seroxat, som har en långsiktig verkan. Och en långsiktig verkan genererar biljoner till en kortsiktig och omänsklig läkemedelsindustri.

Spoiler Line: No spoilers

This is the story of how last night, c. 9 PM, I pretty much Gave In to my inner tramadol demon. It went down like this:

Starting around Sunday evening, when I got back from a long, tiresome (and sober) weekend, I experienced a familiar tramadol-jonesing that went along the lines of “Boy, it sure would be nice to unwind with some Vitamin T right now.” No biggie, right? Typical craving stuff.

This time, however, it went from a basic craving to an elaborate and exhaustive process of rationalization. I started wandering down a dark twisted spider-hole of equivocation, the details of which I’ll spare you. But it ended at this: I was convinced that there would be nothing wrong with re-entering into a relationship with tramadol, provided that the relationship was strictly governed by an iron-clad written contract meant to enforce moderation and restraint. The contract, as I envisioned it, would stipulate that I would indulge in tramadol no more than once a week, and no more than 100 mgs. at a time. I couched my thoughts in a lot of over-intellectualized bullshit about things like ebb and flow and tension and release, and how it’s only natural and human to partake in a little edge-bevelling from time to time, under tightly-controlled circumstances.

My spider and I talked this over for several days in excruciating detail.

In my kitchen, there’s a small, odd-looking drawer under the counter. It looks like something you’d see in an apothecary shop or a hobbit-house or something. It contains various multi-vitamins and supplements and also happens to be the drawer I used to keep the tramadol in. I don’t think I need to tell you that because of this fact, this drawer has always had and always will have a certain numinous aura attached to it, for me. The only thing remotely pharmacological in there now is a bottle of fioricet, which is a low-octane barbituate that my partner has a legit prescription from an actual doctor for, and which my partner has occasional recourse to when experiencing one of those tornado-in-the-eyeball headaches that Hal talks about in Infinite Jest.

This fioricet stuff has never rung any addictive bells for me — it pretty much feels like a burlier version of benadryl. But here’s the thing. I’m in the midst of a multi-day arachnoid dialogue in which I’m ironing out the terms and clauses of this hypothetical tramadol contract, which contract I feel is necessary because I feel I’ve got some psychic edges that could really use an occasional beveling. And while there’s no tramadol in the magic hobbit-drawer, there does happen to be another edge-beveling substance that comes in a white-capped orange bottle.

Furtively, secretly, without telling my partner, I help myself to a fioricet on Tuesday night.

Another one on Wednesday night. Also in secret.

But look, the fioricet doesn’t do shit for me. It’s not what I’m after. It’s working as kind of a stop-gap measure while my spider and I hammer out contractual terms (which we’ve been busy at, believe you me). During this period I experience some quibbles, some qualms. I’m a little conflicted by it but I’ve convinced myself that I’m thinking and acting rationally, that I have, in fact, lit upon a laudably pragmatic middle-ground between total enslavement and Puritanical abstinence. In all honesty, I didn’t put up much of a fight at all.

At this point it’s Wednesday night. Yesterday. The original contract, as envisioned on Sunday night, would have taken effect after I return from overseas at the end of September. But by Wednesday, the contract has been amended to become active this Friday. I decided Friday would be a good day for it because I have edges that need beveling, and Wednesday night is the latest I can order the drugs and be sure that the nice Fedex lady brings them to my door in a conspicuously-rattling package before the weekend. Funny how these things have a way of escalating.

My own personal goose is roasting nicely and I’m cookin’ up some fixins to serve on the side. In my head, I’m drafting the blog post that will explain to you all my new contractual arrangement and I’m trying to arrive at a happy medium between contrition and resoluteness. The draft begins like this:

“This is going to be difficult for all of us.”

However.

Before I can order the drugs, thereby basically signing the contract with my spider, in blood, I need to run this by my partner. Note that I don’t want to run this by my partner. No sir. But we share bank accounts and credit cards and all that shit, and fioricet-incidents aside I’m generally not a fan of secrecy in our partnership. Also, I’m looking for even the slightest glimmer of like, benediction from my partner. I want my partner to agree, just a little bit, a little teeny-tiny bit, that yes there are edges in life that need to be beveled and that I’m making a rational decision to resume a course of pragmatic, rational and controlled edge-beveling whose moderation is guaranteed by contract.

After a lot of hemming and hawing and passive-aggressively forcing my partner to draw this all out of me (because it’s not like I want to come right out and say all this), instead of benediction what I get (although in not quite so many words), is this:

“Are you out of your fucking mind?”

Obviously not the response I’d been hoping for. This is at around 9:30 last night. A long process of inter-partner hashing-shit-out begins. Again, I’ll spare the details.

What happened last night, kind of magically, is that through careful talking and consideration and reasoning my partner was able to dispel the madness that had descended upon me Sunday night. I became able, finally, to take that crucial step outside of my equivocations and intellectualized horseshit, so that I was no longer trapped within those thoughts but observing them as they truly were from a position outside of them. I would not have been able to do this by myself. As I mentioned in the first line of this post, I had given in. I was at the precipice, ready to leap, and it took somebody else — a power completely external to me — to pull me back.

I fessed up to the purloined fioricet (it’s now gone, out of the house and in a secure location unknown to me). And as it turns out a contract was drawn up last night, on the back of a spare piece of paper. This contract is between me and my partner, and not me and my spider. I’m going to reproduce the text of it here because quite frankly, the more witnesses the better. Note that in the course of conversation last night certain metaphysical edicts were made w/r/t tramadol. Some of these edicts made their way into the contract and may not seem to make sense. The important thing is they’re crystal-clear to me.

Important Contract !!!

There will be no contracts re: controlled re-entry into a relationship with tramadol. In fact, there will be no re-entry into any relationship with tramadol no matter how much you try to rationalize it to yourself, you asshole. You are done. For all intents and purposes, tramadol does not exist. It is like sex with unicorns. For all eternity!

Once we drew this up, my partner made me go get my copy of Infinite Jest. My partner then made me put one hand on Infinite Jest and the other up in the air, and recite the contract and swear to uphold it. The contract was then folded up neatly and placed between pages 834 and 835 of Volume III of the Oxford English Dictionary (2nd. ed.), which is where you will find the entry for CONTRACT.

The sense of release I felt, when all of this was done, is basically indescribable. Wallace, in I think the Kenyon address, talks about a lost infinite thing that many of us spend our entire lives searching for. For a good long while after the events of last night, I felt the way I imagine I’d feel if I ever found it.

As of this morning I am 40 days tramadol-free and counting.

To my partner: thank you.

Spoiler line: No spoilers! Yay!

Just a general observation: Is there any form of substance-ingestion more simplistic and inherently un-social, and lonely, than pill-popping? There’s no bong or pipe to pass around, no lines to snort off someone’s cute lil’ bottom, no need to have someone else tie off your arm while you shoot up, none of the sudsy conviviality that often accompanies boozing.

I mean, so many other forms of substance abuse have all sorts of cultural (and hence social) rituals associated with the act of ingesting. But I can’t think of anything equivalent to say, drinking games or pipe-etiquette having to do strictly with pills. The pill-popper* is robbed even of the zany intricate methodologies that accompany the preparation of other substances — there are basically whole realms of human knowledge devoted to mixing drinks or rolling the perfect J-bird or, as Wallace taught us, cooking up a batch of freebase cocaine. But with pills it’s down the hatch and you’re done. Just a ruthlessly efficient and inherently solitary mechanism for funneling Substance x into your body.

I don’t think it’s any accident that most of the substance abuse going on at ETA in Infinite Jest is pill-related.

A lot of us Infinite Summerians have done some pissing and moaning over the relentlessly dry pharmaceutical footnotes in IJ that detail things like drug name, street name, chemical structure, manufacturer, etc. I’m pretty sure this dryness is by design. There’s something terribly cold and rational and engineered about a pill: it’s a commodity, for one thing, created by a pharmaceutical company and sold, at least initially, in a legit marketplace. So it’s going to have all this dry impersonal commodified data associated with it. I think there’s an analogy you can draw between pill-commodities and entertainment-commodities (cartridges and the like) in IJ — both created by distant and impersonal corporations, sold on the open market, engineered to deliver maximal benefit from minimal effort, etc. — that you can’t do quite the same way with a drug like weed or coke.

And finally, can it be just a coincidence that the apotheosis of all Infinite Jest substances, DMZ, is a pill?

* When I first typed that it came out “pill-pooper”!

i learned a salutary lesson from u that day… well, that was really more than 2 months ago now… actually the same happened twice, but it was only the second time around that i woke up and realised what i ought to hv seen… still, better later than never…

the first time around, i sent u an urgent message… u told me before to call u if i felt faint and needed help… so i did… the vertigo was coming at me fierce those days, probably becos of all the stress i was going thru at the hands of ur beloved skank… i had a fainting attack while i was trying to clean the airconditioner ledge in my bedroom, and i fell from the ladder… no it was not high, but i did hurt my knees… i cld not get up and i panicked, so i messaged u… but u were too busy fucking ur skank to bother… u just brushed me off, like a mosquito buzzing in ur ear… her dog’s ass was far more important to u…

the second time around, that was when i finally woke up from my somnambulistic naivety… i had overdosed from a half-hearted suicide attempt… tramadol… of course, us privileged few who suffer from lifelong debilitating illnesses always hv a ready store of drugs, dont we?… and i was emailing u… i told u… but all u did was tell me go rest…

what did i learn?… i learned that that was ur measure of friendship – that that was all i was worth to u…

a simple lesson most others wld never take this long to learn… but i m not most others… i m naive and clueless but i love with dogged persistence and give from an ocean store of selflessness… the MOST lethal combination, far more lethal than any drug, is this cocktail of pathetic innocence, dogged persistence and foolish generosity…

i learned tt i m worthy of my own love and care… i learned tt i shd never put myself in such foolish vulnerable situations again… i learned tt i can and shall walk this journey on my own…
