Aahh, I sprained my ankle! See, it was my brother’s birthday today, (Happy b-day, Andrew!) so

Aahh, I sprained my ankle!

See, it was my brother’s birthday today, (Happy b-day, Andrew!) so he and three of his buddies and I and our parents and my mom’s dad all went to a place called Sky High Sports. Basically it’s a bunch of trampolines connected to each other, with a separate foam pit and dodgeball area. you jump on the trampolines and play for an hour or so.

I took my shoes off and jumped on the trampoline arena for a good three minutes (:D) before I fell and hurt my ankle. I’m not exactly sure what happened, but i think it had something to do with the yellow pads in between the trampolines. I might have tripped over one, or jumped on one accidentally, or something like that.

So I went down, and my ankle hurt really bad, and my dad and this staff person came over to help me up and get off onto a bench. My ankle swelled a lot, and I cried, and I got an ice pack, and I sat out for the rest of the hour.

Yah, it looks like my knee. But that round oval thing on the side of my foot is actually a swollen ankle…and the white thing is my sock…

So I was asking my parents all kinds of questions. “How am I going to sing on Sunday with my choir?” “How am I going to go to school on Monday?” And the most pressing, “How will I get to the car?” Mom answered, “You have a big daddy. He’ll help you.”

And I thought, ‘I’ve got an even bigger Daddy too, and I know he’s gonna help me.’ Why does it take hardship for us to recognize and appreciate things we often take for granted? Thank you, God, that it wasn’t broken or anything worse.

So I got a piggyback ride out of Sky High, and afterwards we went to a restaurant, and my ankle was better but I couldn’t put weight on it, and it hurt if I turned it too much. Then Dad made a doctor’s appointment, and at 7:30ish we headed over there.

I hobbled out of the car and a security person asked if I wanted a wheelchair, and Dad said yes. He wheeled me into the waiting room and told the lady @ the desk, “We’re here for the 7:30 showing of ‘Fix My Ankle.’ She laughed, and i did too. Dad’s so funny. He always tries to make me smile.

After five minutes we were shown into the doctor’s office where a nurse got some basic info from us. Then we waited for a while and I read my book. oh-by the way, this sign was on the garbage–

oops, didn’t mean to make it that big.

so then the doctor came in and looked at my ankle, and she said I needed x-rays. Then Dad and I waited some more, and Jeff the X-ray Guy came in. He wheeled me into the x-ray room and told jokes. I asked if I would feel anything, and he said ‘Only as much pain as you feel when you’re talking on the phone. Or standing by the microwave.’

‘Should I take my glasses off?’ I wondered. ‘No, only if your ankle goes up into your head. Then we’d have to take your braces off, too. That would be kinda painful, cuz all I have are some pliers.’

He took 3 x-rays and Dad wheeled me back. Then the doctor came back in and gave us some papers and looked at the pics with us and said I sprained my ankle. Then the nurse came and gave me crutches and a boot/splint/thing.

Now, i’m in good humor and my ankle only hurts a teeny bit.

Night, everybody! Happy Belated Thanksgiving.

ibby out.

Ok, so it’s build up time for Trampoline on Saturday 12th December. As with every month from

Ok, so it’s build up time for Trampoline on Saturday 12th December. As with every month from now on, the Steinberg Principle will be doing a profile on each artist down to play Trampoline each month. First up for the December show is Glasgow’s very own Jill Leighton. This is not an opportunity for me to ramble on and on about an artist, but a brief introduction to them. The onus really is on you lot to take the opportunity to explore them more and see how diverse and eclectic a line up we have put together on the 12th December. I for one cannot wait. Here we go.

Jill Leighton’s pedigree is there for all to see. Having spent time in the United States singing with such people as Ryan Adams backing band The Cardinals among others, she is an obvious talent. Upon hearing her country tinged tunes, you’d be forgiven for wondering if she’s really from Glasgow, but then the same could be said about local favourites Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers. However, similar to those raggamuffins, there is a distinctive Scottishness to Jill’s bluesy, folksy songs, which I really can’t wait to see in a live setting. Perhaps, it’s not the kind of music that we’re used to or expect here in Edinburgh, or indeed Scotland. Perhaps, it is more suited for the US of A? Or perhaps we need to accept that good country music, with an American tinge can, and does, come out of Scotland. Anyways, there’s a lovely feel to the music that actually, as I listen to it again tonight, makes me glad I’m inside on this wet and windy evening. It’s homely. And comforting. And perfect for this time of year. Blessed with a gorgeous voice and songs to match hopefully 2010 will be a big year for her whether that is on our shores or further afield. Another find thanks to the guys at Glasgow Podcart, Jill will be opening the Trampoline All Day Event on the 12th December. Loaded with a whole bag of new tunes, so I am lead to believe, she is the perfect opening act for a day I hope is going to be magic. Keep an eye out for her work here and come along on 12th to get the live experience.

Here’s gymnast Oli Lemieux KICKING ASS in rehearsals for Cirque du Soleil’s show Dralion. Basically this guy can fly, and I’m so jealous I can barely handle it. But also, when he drops off the highest level of the wall, my hands sweat with terror. I am not cut out for free-fall. Lucky for us, Oli is, and you should watch him, it’s a beautiful thing.

Via Woosk.

Fun fact: I worked for Dralion when they were in Toronto years ago. That’s where I learned to juggle. Oh no, I wasn’t in the show, ha ha ha. I was the assistant shift-leader of the popcorn stand. I got to wear a hairnet and everything! In addition to popcorn, overpriced pop, and cotton candy, we also sold juggling balls, so I had lots of time to practice. Well, after I’d shined up the napkin dispensers and the sweeping was done for the day.

One evening a very handsome mid 40s man with a thick shock of dark hair, sporting huge, black-rimmed nerd glasses (this was long before hipsters existed and nerd glasses became cool), came to my concession station and ordered snacks for his stunning blonde wife and their daughter. They really had presence, this family. After I served them and they walked away, someone told me why: I’d just handed a tray of Cokes to Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger.

Experimentation – Silhouettes When starting out in photography it’s always good to exper

Experimentation – Silhouettes

When starting out in photography it’s always good to experiment with creative ideas. Experimentation is a great way to learn about exposure, lighting, posing, etc. You discover what works and doesn’t work and will certainly retain that knowledge better than if you had just read about those things in a book. You will also refine your own style as you try out ideas and develop a knack for particular things.

One great thing to experiment with is silhouettes. You don’t need fancy equipment — the sun, a lamp, or a flash can be used to create a silhouette. Soft, reflected light combined with shorter exposures often creates striking silhouettes in images. You might try posing someone under (or near) a streetlamp at night and then get down on the ground to shoot the silhouette. Another element you can vary is how much the silhouetted subject is exposed (as you increase the exposure you eventually lose the “silhouette” effect of course).

Here are a couple of images which I created on a whim to experiment with silhouettes. I created the first while out catching the sunrise in Rockport, TX (see some of my Rockport images here). My daughter happened to show up on the scene so I asked out her to stretch out her hand roughly in front of the sun. Not a great overall composition but it’s useful as an illustration here.

Rockport Sunrise Silhouette

This silhouette of my son jumping on the trampoline was just an idea I had while sitting on the porch watching him jump. I got underneath the edge of the trampoline (be especially careful with larger children or you’ll end up with a concussion!) and fired away. The shot I set out to make was one of him jumping high in the air with his arms stretched out (I did get some of those). However, the way the sun flared out from my son’s hand in the following photo made this a favorite.

Doing His Tricks

Have some fun and experiment with silhouettes. You’ll get some great shots, and hopefully learn a few tricks which will become a useful part of your photoshoot arsenal.

Why does my child need to see a Chiropractor? He/she does not have headaches, neck pain or back pai

Why does my child need to see a Chiropractor? He/she does not have headaches, neck pain or back pain. They are just a “normal” kid running around, experiencing and living life to its fullest.

If this is your thought on Chiropractic care and your child or even yourself, please just open your mind for a few minutes to take in some information.

I would like to open with a true story of a girl age 14 who one day was jumping on her trampoline not unlike any other day. All of a sudden she jumps too far and falls off and hits a bird bath. This fall that she sustained fractured her lower arm, strained her shoulder and caused trauma to her cervical spine (neck). She would undergo treatments at the orthopedist for her elbow getting a cast. She would make what seemed to be a full recovery until one day playing basketball she fell and hit her shoulder (which was already weak) and she would have to undergo therapy to help regain strength and mobility. The therapy seemed to be working, until one day in class she was doing school work and a guy fell into her shoulder. This caused her extreme pain and left her right arm and first three fingers numb. Is this numbness due to the guy hitting the shoulder, the basketball fall or the fall off the trampoline? What would have been the outcome if she had seen a Chiropractor after the trauma to her body falling off the trampoline? She is now under Chiropractic care to correct the misalignments/Subluxations in her spine and get her on the road to recovery.

Take a look at some FAQ available at International Chiropractic Pediatric Association – Research Foundation.

Let’s face it. I don’t really care if The Last Battle are the best new act in the world

Let’s face it. I don’t really care if The Last Battle are the best new act in the world or the worst new act in the world, their head wear is fucking sensational and I cannot wait to see them live! It’s about time a band came along to challenge The Kays in the wooly hat stakes and from the looks of the picture above it looks like the Last Battle are well up for the challenge!

Fear not though, they have real ability and substance to equal their excellent head wear! They describe themselves rather beautifully on their myspace page:

It was only a mere 3 months ago that THE LAST BATTLE began writing, recording and rehearsing in each other’s front rooms. With some of the boys and girls having never even played an instrument before let alone take to a stage, the 8-piece alt folksters have already played a handful of shows and are busy putting the finishing touches to their as-of-yet-untitled debut album. Through their boy/girl duets, sweeping cello and well arranged use of traditional instruments they create songs of death, love and longing.

I for one cannot wait to hear these guys live. There is a lot of talk about them in Edinburgh. A lot of positive murmers. From what I’ve heard on their myspace and the positive reviews I’ve heard from others to date this is one band that definitely should not be missed. I think I am most excited about these guys on 14th. I do love it when a band come on the radar who seem to tick all your boxes. It’s going to be lovely to see if they live up to my expectations.

The Last Battle play Trampoline on Saturday 14th November at the Wee Red Bar, Edinburgh College of Art. Doors 7pm. Entry £5 or £3 with a valid student card.

Well here’s another artist I discovered via Glasgow Podcart and their wonderful weekly show on Radio Magnetic. I hope those guys don’t get tired of me whoring their show all the time! I haven’t actually heard it for a few weeks now due to business at work, where I normally tune in, so I’ve not kept up to date with what they’ve been calling me. You see, normally if they mention me I take dogs abuse from Sean and Ally. I know it’s in jest of course (I hope!) but it’s been nice not to hear my name taken in vain the past few weeks. Cue them reading this and an onslaught of abuse occuring on the next podcart I expect!

Anyways, that’s beside the point. The point is that thanks to their wonderful show I’ve stumbled across a few gems that I’ve managed to get along to Trampoline. Beerjacket being the one that sticks out most in my mind. But then there’s John B McKenna. When I heard him on their show I instantly fell in love with the song and felt compelled to check him out a little bit more and ask him along to Trampoline. As always, as we only do a monthly show, it’s taken a little longer than I’d have liked to get him here. But here he will be on the 14th November to play some of his lovely songs. And I’m lead to believe he’s started to play with a band now as well so we could be in for a real treat. Expect some hushed quiet beauty for sure, but with a band onboard I am intrigued to see what will be on offer. That’s if he brings them. He might fly solo. Either way you’re in for a treat. Check him out here.

In a new feature here at the The Steinberg Principle, I have decided that to help promote Trampoline I’m going to start writing a feature on all the artists playing each month prior to them playing. Therefore, please sit back and enjoy the first of my profile pieces on the wonderful Panda Su. Two more for November to follow shortly.

Panda Su is a woman crossed with a Panda. Simple as that. A while ago some scientists, with nothing better to do than try and cross breed animals decided to see what would happen if they took a Panda and a human and bred them. The results are really quite fantastic. As you can see from the picture above what was created was a rather wonderful little musician from Fife called Su. I’m sure at the time the scientists never expected to create a woman who was so musically gifted. Still, sometimes science just throws you these wonderful little curve balls and……wham……you have a half human, half panda, folk musician………….

……………..Of course, none of this is true. I wish it were! Well apart from the cross breeding part. That’s just weird. Actually, I take it back, there is some truth in the story above, which is that Panda Su is an exceptionally talented girl. Her Panda powers have nothing to do with it. Of course the story is simple:

Panda Su hails from the sunny shores of St Andrews, Fife. Su (full name Suzanne Isabel Ferreira Shaw) released her debut EP Sticks and Bricks’ in September of last year which was produced by the enigmatic Steve Mason (King Biscuit Time/Black Affair/ex-Beta Band). On stage Su is joined by South African born JaxAdam – a percussionist who specialises in the playing of toy accordions, children’s glockenspiels and an array of other hand-held instruments. Together they play “gentle, melodic, colourful songs which curl up in your head” – an acclaim which has earned them gigs alongside Frightened Rabbit, Withered Hand and a slot at the Fence Collective’s Homegame festival in Anstruther and at Hinterland in Glasgow. Last year they embarked on a 22-date tour of the USA and Canada. Panda Su’s track ‘Moviegoer’ was Track of The Month in the Scotsman newspaper for the month of April. – Tentracks.

Simples. Right? Wrong. That’s a hell of a lot to achieve in such a short space of time. The fact that Steve Mason produced her EP in the first place is something pretty special that most of us musicians would like to be able say! She’s a real talent and Trampoline is delighted that she’ll be playing for us on Saturday 14th November. Do make sure you come along and check her out, it will be well worth the trip and money.

Panda Su plays Trampoline on Saturday 14th November, Wee Red Bar, Edinburgh College of Art. Doors 7pm. Entry £5 or £3 with a valid student card.
