In Japan’s early history, a serious disregard for manners could be punishable by death, and any samu

In Japan’s early history, a serious disregard for manners could be punishable by death, and any samurai could kill any common person who failed to show him proper respect. The Japanese were required to behave in precisely prescribed ways—wearing permitted clothing, walking only a certain way, sleeping with their heads pointing in a certain direction and legs arranged a particular way. Eating, greeting, gesturing with hands, opening doors and many work tasks had to be done in assigned ways without deviation. Conduct became a measure of morality, and virtue in manners was visible for all to see. Even today, the code of conduct plays a significant role in the lives of the Japanese. Many societies, not Japan alone, have a prescribed form and manner for every familiar situation that might arise. Unforeseen situations can cause intense embarrassment or discomfort. Throughout East Asia, actions are judged by the manner in which they are performed. More important than the accomplishment of a task is the question of how someone went about trying to complete the task: Did he act sincerely? More important than winning the race is the grace of the runner. More important than expertise is the way one gets along with others. More important than profits is harmony. In contrast, Westerners and particularly Americans are more concerned with the principles of things, hard “measures” and objective facts. Although rules of ethics are extremely important, we are more goal oriented than method-conscious, we say “a good loser is a loser.”

One aspect of form is the concept of “face.” Much has been written about “face-saving” in Japan and China, but face-saving is important absolutely everywhere. The difference is only a matter of degree and nuance. Where an American might feel a little guilty or inadequate, an Asian, Arab or South American may feel deep shame and humiliation. What an American might see as a little honest and constructive criticism, the foreigner may take as a devastating blow to pride and dignity. A foreigner is likely to be sensitive to feelings of others in transactions that an American would consider strictly impersonal, such as returning a defective product or switching hairdressers. The traveler simply must be more conscious of saying things or behaving in ways that cannot be taken as disrespect, criticism or humiliation. In some countries it seems just about anything can be taken personally, even such indirect affronts as not taking your shoes off in a mosque or complaining about the heat.

Harmony with the environment can be as important as sensitivity to people in some cultures. In Japan a woman wears a soft pastel dress to a flower show so as not to take away from the beauty of the flowers. In countries where people believe in reincarnation they are careful about all forms of life. In India, for example, people are careful not to swallow gnats or step on ants—one might be a relative.

When selecting the right merchant account services, you need to consider some important aspects.

Monthly fees: Find out upfront what your monthly fees and transaction charges will be. Some companies will lure you in with low fees only to hit you with outrageous charges later. Credit Card Processor (CCP) offers the lowest fees in the industry with no hidden costs and no surprises

Processing time: Ask about processing time and application start up time. Any delay in processing transactions and payments will have a serious affect on your business. Credit Card Processor (CCP) can get your merchant account service set up and running smoothly within a few days.

Reliable customer Service: Accessibility to the help you need is important. You should be able to receive assistance when you need it. The helpful and friendly staff at Credit Card Processor (CCP) are always ready and willing to help.

Terminals: Not all equipment is right for all situations. Find out if there are more than one type of card reader, virtual terminal, or payment gateways for different types of point of sale. The more suitable a terminal is to your particular business, the more useful it will be.

By selecting merchant account services and equipment from Credit Card Processor (CCP), all of your credit card processing needs will be met.

Cloud Computing and its impact Cloud computing is essentially a method of accessing resources and se

Cloud Computing and its impact

Cloud computing is essentially a method of accessing resources and services hosted on a network, used by PCs or other devices. When the business uses the computer resources , they pay a fee depending upon the amount of time and computing resources they have consumed. Cloud computing is seen as a good facilitator of technology in business as data does not require to be physically stored, as it is stored online. Cloud computing is not only used in ecommerce sites but everyday websites such as Gmail and Google Maps.

The use of cloud computing in ecommerce gives the firm a real advantage. The speed of this method offers a great benefit in that it saves time, which provides the opportunity for work and improvement elsewhere. It also puts the focus back on the customer and caters to their requirements. Running an online business within a computing cloud aids business interactions with the customer. It also saves money in this area by cutting down on transaction costs.

A further benefit is the virtualisation and independence of the company. Considering resources and data can be shared, the business can provide their services to different clients regardless of location. This also applies to customers and visitors to the website, whose location is not relevant, as they can still utilise and obtain the same data and service. Cloud computing also provides something which guarantees customer satisfaction-reliability. This is done by performance monitoring provided by the computing firm, which ensures consistency and optimum performance for the end user and customers.

The use of this methodology, however, certainly carries various risks. One downside of cloud computing within an online business is that there are serious security considerations. The safety and custody of data transferred and stored on the site is a concern to a business like Clinique. Business, personal and financial data (credit details), can be hosted on a server elsewhere. There could be major implications to the business if this data is compromised. Customer trust would be lost, and certainly the online platform of the business would fail.

Another concern is the performance of this technology in high demand circumstances. Many networks and customers connecting at the same time can reduce the overall performance of the website, slowing down processes such as browsing, and the most important transaction to the company, the purchase of the item. The impact of this is the customer locating services elsewhere from another company, effectively leading to a reduction of profit and sales.

Credit card processors promote their service by offering discounted rates. These rates often have different tiered models which fall into three categories: qualified, mid qualified and unqualified.

Qualified : Qualified transactions attract the minimum fees

Mid-qualified and downgrades: These transactions generally cost more.

Overall the discount rates are offered based on the timeliness and the quality of the information that is being provided to the credit card processing company. Research shows that more than one third of the total volume is, most of the time, mid-qualified and downgrades. Most of these transactions are international and are from rewards cards. In order to reduce the downgrades and mid-qualified transactions, Merchant account providers should make sure that correct information, with all of the relevant data is passed on for authorization and verification.

Important data such as address verification, and CVV should be passed on for the transaction to be qualified. Also, the credit card processing records should be submitted within stipulated time frames. It is therefore, important to work in close association with your credit card service provider to make sure that the proper information and settlement standards are applied to the sales and transaction processes.

The sheer number of sites that allow a reader to rate nonprofits has my mouse trigger happy, my head

The sheer number of sites that allow a reader to rate nonprofits has my mouse trigger happy, my head spinning, and my brain questioning the openness of the internet.

I started this soul searching recently after speaking to a nonprofit founder/CEO about the current (and extended)GreatNonprofits: Jewish Choice Awards 2009 campaign. After the conversation I was left with questions that have led me to believe that these types on online contests are not the best strategies for spreading the word about great charities nor are these polls a fair judge of the world’s organizations. Allow me to elaborate:

1) Adding to the Noise

Todays donors are bombarded with advertisements and requests from every type of media known to man. Nonprofits should be trying to enhance a donors calm, not add to the uproar. I read recently an article entitled “In Fundraising, Sometimes Less is More” by Beaconfire Consultants that dealt with this very question.

Fundraising is a fine balancing act. On one hand, you want to make a strong push. On the other hand, at some point you get diminishing returns. At the same time, its a fair bet that their inboxes are being flooded by fundraising messages from other non-profits; you want to stand out from the crowd, but not be part of the noise. Sometimes, less is more. Whats one way to strike a healthy balance? Send fewer messages, but make them count more.

I myself have gotten three emails and countless tweets asking me to vote for my “GreatNonprofit.” I would definitely categorize this as noise.

2) Ineffective Donor Encounters

The purpose of every interaction between an organization and its donor should be to increase the connection between the giver and the recipient. Turning to a donor to vote for his favorite charity does not do this. The reason why not is described very well by consultant and author Steve Yastrow. In his book We, The Ideal Customer Relationship, Yastrow divides all interactions between a seller and a customer (and make no mistake about it, fundraisers are selling something that they hope donors are buying) into two categories, transactions and encounters. A transaction is any interaction that either damages the relationship or keeps the relationship status quo; encounters, however, are interactions that improve the relationship. Yastrow elaborate that encounters can only happen when the seller is engaging the buyer, totally focused on the moment.

I have trouble believing that these generic, masses-enlisted, charity popularity-contests are engaging constituents and endearing them to a charitys cause. Asking a donor to participate in this type of poll is not an encounter.

Additional proofs of the transaction-nature of the surveys are the generic, non-personal five “tips for gathering reviews” listed on the GreatNonprofits site:

Are you a nonprofit? Tips for gathering reviews:

Send an email to your volunteers, clients, donors, and board members (for an email template, click here)

Post to your facebook status

Tweet out a link asking people to post reviews

Post a link in a prominent place on your Web site

Put a link in your email newsletter asking people to post reviews

Furthermore, when a nonprofit can turn to its supporters only a limited amount of times before seeming overbearing, why waste one of these limited opportunities on a transaction-like survey?

3) One-Way Street

Modern philanthropists do not want to merely mail a check or click the “donate now” button on a website. Today’s donor/charity relationship is all about the “you scratch my back, I scratch your back” relationship. Or in other words, the donor supplies the cash and the organization supplies an inclusive and sometimes tangible experience. Supporters are rolling up their sleeves to get dirty and those nonprofits that can adapt to this new donor are reaping the benefits. Recent case studies, articles, and blogs have been examining this new trend seemingly to no end. A great example of this win-win giving philosophy is “Table to Table” that offered vacationers in Israel an enriching way to fill their holiday by harvesting vegetables for Israel’s less-fortunate. With this in mind, these kinds of contests seem to serve a totally non-experiential, unidirectional purpose that only benefits the organization.

4) Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth

Getting back to the paragraph that got this blog started. In the past year we have seen an outbreak of sites that host reviews of charities so the public can benefit from authentic experiences. In theory, this is a great idea but practically it appears that with so many sites in existence we have lost any industry standard. There seems to be much duplication and overlap, but with no clear winner as to which site is the most trustworthy or comprehensive. I’m still uncertain as to which sites specialize in what areas and if these sites don’t have their own agendas. Or for that matter, I wonder if these contests only crop up so one site can gain popularity over others, but without offering any real advantages.

5) Survey Participants are not Heterogeneous

The demographics of the people filling out online surveys are not evenly spread out among ages and locations. The 45+ age category is a good example of this. While Facebook might be having an increase in this group, the same cannot be said of other social media networks. It goes without saying that even for people who are internet savvy, filling out an online survey is not the same as keeping your friends updated with 140 characters or less. The results, then, are not fair and somewhat misleading.

I have lots more to say but I would like to open the discussion and hear what others think. I look forward to continuing the conversation.

October is the time to do my semi-annual purchase of funds. My asset allocation plan shows that I need to top up two asset classes:

Europe equity

Japan equity

No top up for REITs as the current holdings in my portfolio is over the target allocation already, because I have accepted a number of rights issues offered by some of the REITs.

For Europe equity and Japan equity, the funds that I will use remain the same: iShares MSCI Europe ETF and Lyxor Japan (TOPIX) ETF respectively. There is an alternative to Europe equity: Lyxor MSCI Europe ETF that was listed in SGX a week ago. The broker fee to buy this ETF is cheaper than iShares MSCI Europe ETF, which is listed in London Stock Exchange. But for now, I will give Lyxor MSCI Europe ETF a miss because it is quite new and the asset under management is only slightly more than USD 6 million.

I have made the transaction for Lyxor Japan (TOPIX) ETF and will buy iShares MSCI Europe ETF next week, after its ex-date on 28-Oct-2009.

One is the real time and the other is the virtual terminal. Let us explore both the ways in more detail.

Real time: This enables the processing of credit card payments on your website automatically. The customer visits your website, includes the service or product in the shopping card, fills the relevant details and sends the information form for further processing. This transaction is then sent to the bank for further processing and the authorized amount is then deposited into your merchant account in the span of two to three business days. If you are in need of a process that does not require manual intervention then the real time processing is the ideal choice for you.

Virtual terminal: This requires you to manually enter the transaction details on to a secure website. This ensures security since the transactions are done off line by an authenticate person. It is also possible to use both the processes together. If you receive product or service orders through phone, mail or fax then an off line batch system is a very good idea. This requires you to login to a safe virtual terminal directed by your merchant account.

When dealing with transactions, whether it be a database SQL transaction or Client/Server Transactio

When dealing with transactions, whether it be a database SQL transaction or Client/Server Transaction etc. it is important to make sure that strive to uphold an ACID state. ACID is an acronym for:

Atomicity – This property refers the ability of a transaction to be fully processed and completed or canceled and rolled back. This property should always be put in place to ensure data integrity.

Consistency – For a transaction to be consistent the data which is being modified in the transaction must be left in a continuous stable state until the transaction successfully completes or is rolled back.

Isolation – The isolation of a transaction must be ensured while it is processing ie. it can not be interrupted or modified in any way by other transactions, processes etc. Upon completion of the current transaction another can be started.

Durability – The Durability of a transaction means that once a transaction has been completed it will persist and cannot be undone, this is important for problems such as hardware failure, crashing etc. although the durability of a transaction does not stop other transactions from altering the processed date.

A Transaction processing monitor environment is normally put in place when a system handles many multi-threaded processes, an example of one such system is a distributed client/server system where all transactions must ensure that ACID properties are enforced, otherwise data can be maliciously damaged, altered or lost. A TP monitor can prevent an operating system being overwhelmed by scheduling threads and processes appropriately and evenly distributing the processing load.

Did you start your own company, build it up the way you wanted, handled all the aspects of it, and helped every customer yourself and then decide that you just want to be the boss only? If so, how did you hand off your customers that you had helped personally on a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly basis? Your customers came to depend on your customer service and the way that you interacted with them. You knew their name, their kids name, their wife’s name, maybe even their pets name! They knew some of that stuff about you too. The transaction that occurred at your business wasn’t necessarily a strict business one, but one of a friend buying from a friend. But now you have hired some help, which is a good thing (because you are expanding), and they handle the customers. But do they handle them in the same way you did? You built up that rapport over a long time, they came to trust you, they want to buy from you, not just necessarily from the business. They can get the same product closer to their house or even maybe at a lower price, but they come to YOU! What you need to do is train your new hire in your ways, personally hand off the customer to the new hire with an introduction, and reassure to the customer that they will be taken care of in the same manner that they have been accustom to all those years.

Vas-y mon Bob!

There are several kinds of machines used for the purpose of processing credit cards for purchasing. We at Credit Card Processor .Com sell these machines to credit card merchants who to provide their customers and potential customers with the ease and convenience of processing their orders with credit cards.

The machine that allows merchants to use a high speed internet connection to process their customers’ credit cards is called the IP Compatible terminal. An Ethernet cord is plugged directly into the terminal, which provides the merchant with a quick turnaround on transaction timing. This machine cuts the overall transaction time in half, providing the customer with speed and convenience. The IP Compatible is an ideal solution for companies with a high speed DSL/Cable internet connection.

Wireless credit card machines do the same as the above-mentioned IP Compatible terminal, but they have the added convenience of being wireless. No more of those obnoxious cords!

A PIN pad is a special kind of credit card processor. It encrypts the cardholder’s PIN, or personal identification number. Together with an electronic cash register, the PIN pad is responsible for taking the sale amount and initiating and/or handling the transaction. When the customer’s PIN is inputted into the machine, it’s sent upstream to the customer’s bank, which verifies his or her account, ensures that there are enough funds in the account, and then sends back the necessary information to the merchant account.

Your domain might be complex and rich in variations that need to be supported. Trying to capture all

Your domain might be complex and rich in variations that need to be supported. Trying to capture all the complexity is neither pragmatic nor feasible given the constraints you might be under. Instead, focus on the essential complexity. In addition, it is unlikely that your business supports all the variations in your problem domain. Fortunately most domain variations are expressed as user stories and you can look for patterns across iterations and releases to get a better understanding. Deciding the sub-set of complexity to manage is an art and you will need to continually collaborate with folks on your team on this.

I use a set of simple categories to look for areas that have essential domain complexity. This list is by no means comprehensive but it gives you a sense of what could drive complexity.

Data capture: the system might have multiple user roles and the kind of data, the validations/rules that execute on them all vary

Geography: variations based on geographic regions/countries/states including differences in language, date/time formatting

Combination of product features (also called as bundling): variations to support different product flavors (for instance basic supports features X, Y, and Z, professional supports features X, Y, K, and premium supports A, X, Y, and K).

Entitlements: variations in access to different parts of a system and perform varying tasks. Related to user population and transaction behavior as well.

Transaction behavior: variations in transaction behavior in terms of monetary limits, approvals/validation rules, how business exceptions are handled

Channel (also called as distribution channel or sales channel): product availability, feature availability, security, customer support, frequency and kinds of marketing communications etc.

Next time you examine a user story place it in light of your domain categories. Is it a recurring pattern across iterations? If so, you should add it to your systematic reuse roadmap. Don’t panic if managing domain complexity doesn’t influence your design from day one. Nothing here is about embarking on a big upfront design effort to manage all this complexity. You should differentiate between awareness and action. Your increased awareness of your domain will help you align your systematic reuse efforts with business aspirations and iteration goals. Think of this as your refactoring guide that helps you make surgical changes to your codebase.
