Mr. Morris has already referenced his love of airplanes several times on this blog, but, for a number of reasons, the time is right for me to share my perspective on the Wright brothers’ great invention. That several of my friends, including Mr. Morris himself, have flown out of the country this month to embark on foreign explorations has really got me thinking about the significance of flight and of travel in general.

To me, flying has always been a symbol of transcendence. It’s about leaving behind everything you have going on at the moment, the good and the bad, and rising above it. It’s that feeling I always got at the airport growing up–the excitement and uncertainty of knowing that you will soon be in the air far away from the comforts and complications of your home life and on your way to a new destination with seemingly infinite possibilities lying ahead.

A spiritual takeoff happens when the time calls for you to board your own metaphorical planes in order to elevate above the maze of your everyday life and become the person you are destined to be. The only way to really transcend the perceived limitations of your everyday life is to set aside a period in which you separate yourself from them. While extended leaves of absence from your routine, like a sabbatical or a month-long retreat, are great practices of separation, there are also smaller retreats you can incorporate into your regular routine. These include things like taking a few minutes to meditate before you start your day, taking a day off from work and your usual routine on the weekend to relax and reflect, or setting aside a time to really enjoy some music or other art forms.

There are times when you have the opportunity take your departure from the realm of the metaphorical to reality. Though changing your geographical location is not the “solution” to this problem of limitation, a physical separation from your environment can often expand your horizons and alter your perspective in ways that cannot be achieved in the comfort of familiar scenery.

William Shedd once said that “a ship is safe in the harbor, but that is not what ships are for.” Airplanes aren’t made to stay at the airport, just as humans aren’t made to stay in their comfort zones their whole lives. So, when the time calls for it, go forth from the comfort and normalcy of your daily routine! You are almost certain to inspire others to look past the veil of their limitations as well. But, there are always going to be those who, for any number of reasons, would like to keep your plane from leaving the runway. All I can say for them is that “they gon’ miss this plane” (c. Wiz Khalifa).

Safe travels!

A good case made for the assertion that we should live much longer than we do. There’s an explosion in groundbreaking discoveries in disease prevention and avoiding premature aging. The next 2 decades are going to change the way we think about health, disease and longevity. Kurzweill/Grossman make a damn good case for the notion that we are dying and aging way too young.

Nanotechnology, biomechanics, and supplementation will likely make most disease, like diabetes, obsolete. The authors might go a little overboard in their reliance on technology. And they don’t seem to fully understand the value of intense exercise. But, their understanding and explanation of what is going on inside our cells that cause aging, and how to avoid it NOW through nutrition and lifestyle and we’ll avoid it LATER through technology and research that is almost complete-makes this damn interesting.

I’ve certainly changed my supplementation and nutritional habits as a result of this book and will likely pick up their recent release, Transcend.

when i think of how this year developed i am amazed! it was a year of spiritual rebirth, of bringing creation into the world. a year of such growth…. i started the year living with my boyfriend in his mother’s garage in van nuys. i remember waking up to the mechanics next door working on cars loudly, the fumes permeating the room, we would huddle together freezing (even with the floor heater and blankets)…the engines and drills would begin around 7 am and we had just gone to bed 3 hours prior from working on the album- which at the time felt would NEVER get finished. i remember the borracho neighbor (who started drinking in the morning) and would put this horrible song on repeat as loud as his stereo could go… one day i got out of bed and walked into his garage (he wasn’t there yet he had left the song on) and turned it down myself. i just didn’t give a fuck anymore! i felt stuck, stagnant in my environment. eeeiiii dios! i could go on… but how the year transitioned!!!!! how i transcended! the affirmations, the prayer, my manifestation group, the love energy i gave brought about so many beautiful manifestations! my debut album was released in july – M. U. S. I. C. (Magnificent Unique Sexy Intelligent Creativity) dre and i put together a phenomenal band, seriously ridiculously gifted musicians who are family. i am beyond grateful for them! we’ve had incredible shows that keep growing in connection, musicianship, inventiveness, passion and energy! we moved to an absolutely beautiful home of our own that i can’t help but feel continuous intense gratitude for. i love love love it! i feel like i’ve developed and spiritually deeped my friendships and relationships with my family. i’m understanding them and myself in new ways. i feel so blessed to be connecting to such amazing souls through my blog. this year was filled with so many challenges and blessings! it was my coming out year musically. and i cannot undo what i’ve done. i cannot go back to life without creation, artistic growth, and self-expression. i had been waiting for this my whole life!!! and it’s happening! and it’s happening for a reason as i know i’m meant to give love and inspiration through music. it always amazes me how everything can change so quickly. how we can be in such a dark place and then soon find the light.

Did Rishi Vatsyayana physically explore all that in kama sutra before creating the text ?

Did the sculptors of various sensual sculptures in india, have people standing in such pose before them, while they created such sculptures ?

The difference between a creation that is produced as a result of physical experience and that which is produced as a result of intuitive experience is that in the former, the focus is on, and remains on, the physical aspects as experienced through the senses while the latter transcends limitations of physical senses and inspires experience of the essence.

The difference is similar to that between a dead body and a living body- the vital living aspect. Howsoever perfect the dead body is, and imperfect the living body may be, the latter has a vitality that makes it engaging which the other lacks.

This is the reason the realisation aham brahmasmi cannot be experienced purely through experience from physical senses.

This origin of kama sutra, through intuitive experience in the mind of a realized sage, makes it much more than a manual on sex. It is a tool aiding in living dharmically, while experiencing life, assisting in fostering awareness and intuition, leading up towards realization.
So are the other texts, sculptures, dance forms and music of bhArat. They have the quality of rasa- that which inspires experience of the vital, by the discerning viewer/listener/reader.

bharatiya samskriti, comprising of such texts, scuptures, dance forms, music, thought and spiritual outlook, derivative of intuitive experiences, aids in sustaining dharma in society and inspires people to realise themselves.

By Sridhar *
(This Article is cross-Posted at Sridharsmusic.com)

A commonly used, but yet misunderstood concept is Compression.

Compression is a necessary aspect in a good mix. In subtle amounts, it adds punch, depth, and even ‘feel’ to a mix. When overused, you can end up with a stale, lifeless, squashy mix. Here I’m going to run through the basics of compression, using a lovely Tama snare track as our waveform. Compression has four main parameters.

So, what’s Attack/Release/Threshold/Ratio? I had talked about this in my previous post on Mixing drums.

But now, let’s look at it visually.

Here’s the original waveform. A beautiful transient at the start, and fades out nice and clean. Ahhhh. Click to enlarge.

uncompressed tama waveform

Now, let’s compress it. Here’s how it looks after using the following settings, with a threshold low enough to trigger the compressor right at the start. The white line shows the moment when the compressor starts (estimated attack), and the red line shows when the compressor ‘releases’, which means it stops acting on the waveform.

Attack: 100ms (white line) Release: 500ms (red line), Ratio 2:1

Now, let’s try different settings.

Attack: 50ms (white line) Release: 1ms (red line), Ratio 2:1

Notice how the red lines kick in almost immediately after the white lines ‘attack’ the waveform. This is because the release is set at a very low setting of 1ms. What does this mean to the audio? It means that the compression takes place almost throughout the whole waveform after the first attack since as soon as the compressor ‘releases’, the audio is ‘attacked’ immediately. Of course, threshold will determine when the compressor will stop attacking, based on the shape of the waveform.

Next example.

Attack: 1ms (white line) Release: 500ms (red line), Ratio 2:1

Makes sense now? Compare this to the original waveform and notice how the shapes are different.

Attack: 1ms (white line) Release: 1ms (red line), Ratio 2:1

Straightforward again?

Ok, now you have a better grasp of how compressors work. But, how does it affect the sound of the waveform? Let’s take the snare drum as the example.

As is obvious, the snare waveform consists of two major parts – The initial hit of the snare, and then the decay of the snare. When you have a very small attack setting, of about 1ms, the compressor acts on the initial ‘hit’ of the snare, and affects the dB based on your ratio.

What does it do to the sound again? You get a ‘crack’ sound. Yet, it sounds tiny. Why? This is because the initial transient or hit of the snare is important in giving the snare some beef as well as snap. Now, slowly increase the attack to 5ms and gradually to 15ms. You will notice more and more of the snare’s initial transient goes through uncompressed, which inturn makes the snare more present in the mix. I leave it to you to experiment with the release settings and figure out how that affects the sound.

Happy compressing!

Briggs & Riley Transcend 21″ Carry-On Expandable Upright Review My old Briggs & Riley

Briggs & Riley Transcend 21″ Carry-On Expandable Upright Review

My old Briggs & Riley carry on finally began to look very sad and frayed after years of use and I hated to part with it. But it always was a little heavy and the light weight of this design was appealing. I travel a lot and use this exclusively for business travel. The following comments are based on at least ten trips with it. First, it is very light and the telescoping handle is typical Briggs & Riley: very solid and functional. The construction of the zippers is very solid also. The bag is slightly larger than my last one and on some planes it is a very tight fit in the overhead bin. This is one of those bags that fits better if you push it in handle-first with the wheels toward you. There is a handle between the wheels that will let you pull it out easily. It is not a great bag for a suit although there is a folding garment section that will hold one if you don’t mind doing a little restoration at your destination- i.e. steaming it in the bathroom. I think this would be the ideal bag for people traveling light and casual on trips lasting a few days. Not a vacation bag and not an ideal business bag. Of course, B&R make a more expensive bag that would probably meet all my business needs, but it is much heavier.

Feature

Simple as That Lifetime Warranty: Briggs amp; Riley will repair or replace this bag if damaged, no matter what the cause of damage

Made of Tuff-Lite material that is lightweight, water repellent and resistant to abrasions, tears, and punctures

Easy pack main compartment allows you to organize the bag with incredible ease

Zip around expansion provides 3 additional packing space

Garment securing panels keep clothes in place minimizing wrinkling

Overview
Briggs Riley’s Transcend 21 Carry-On Expandable Upright luggage piece offers 3 additional packing space and has room for 2-3 hanging items. The great reviews synonymous with Briggs Riley tell the story of this piece. Perfect for a 2-3 day trip.

•

Under the darkness of a rather cold night, I wonder just how much of the world I see when my eyes are open, and what are the things that I usually focus on? Do I have a natural proclivity to just look at the same objects and sites that come into my awareness, do I follow conditioned patterns, do my eyes have visual rail tracks that it normally runs on, or blinders to things on the periphery? It’s impossible to observe everything with two eyes, or perhaps that just happens when the eyes are closed? How blind am I really, and is that the reason I like to walk around with a camera, challenging myself to see things differently, framing the world to the size of a viewfinder, allowing myself to look in new directions, searching for the visual that usually gets passed by. Perhaps that’s why I keep shooting images, obsessively observing, letting attention flow free, allowing light into the unconsciousness blindness that often inhabits my sight. In many ways, the camera has become my guide dog to the everyday visual world I inhabit, leading me down roads that I would naturally not take, like water cascading down a hilly incline, always taking the path of least resistance.

When I see the blind, I wonder just how much of the world they are missing, yet perhaps the other senses compensate and allow sounds, smells and temperatures to form internal visuals that no camera will ever be able to capture. We need camera’s of the mind, image processors for the brain, ways of seeing the unseen … or is that simply what we call art?

By Sridhar * (This article is cross-posted at Sridharsmusic.com) A lot of people have come up to me

By Sridhar *
(This article is cross-posted at Sridharsmusic.com)

A lot of people have come up to me and asked me how I can get the almost-commercial sound on myMelakartha recordings.

It is no dark art, but it did take me quite a while to get there. I’m going to share some simple ideas and concepts that can make your mix (and thereby song) a lot more appealing, and complete. When was the last time you wrote a great song in your head, but which turned out to sound like nails on a blackboard by the time you had finished recording it?

Bear in mind, this is a complete bedroom guide – If you’re the kind who came here looking for suggestions on tweaking that SSL hardware rack, or trying to reduce the noise floor on your mammoth 32-channel tube pre-amp powered mixer that sits on your desk, let me shoo you away before you get disgusted with our primal, budget mixing methods

Bedroom Tracking

A) What you’ll need -

An interface between your instrument/mic and your computer – I’m not going to get into the details on this, there are tons of guides and comparisons on which interface to use. I personally use the Line6 GuitarPort which is an older version of the Pod X3 in the market right now and is discontinued. I’ve had good results with line6 and their products are highly recommended.(OR)

A soundcard

Software DAW – Cubase/ProTools/Logic/Adobe Audition/Ableton Live/Sonar, the list is endless. This is completely dependant on your preference. I really like Adobe Audition 3 for tracking so I will base the rest of this post on that, though the concepts are applicable across all the DAWs.

Headphones/Speakers for monitoring – Highly recommended are the Sennheiser HD650 or, the cheaper Audio Technica ATH-M50

B) Setting up your DAW

Metal has always been about precision, and heaviness. Tightly timed tracks = HEAVY! So I’m assuming that we want to be recording to a click track.

For a bigger sound to your guitars, you MUST double track and pan your guitars. If you’re a tight player, you are most certain to enjoy the sonic results from quad-tracking your guitars as well.

Set your DAW to record at 24 bit audio, at 48 khZ. Warning: Ensure that your interface can do this before you buy it. Refer to this guide here for detailed comparisons of audio interfaces

Set your signal levels on your interface (using the gain feature), or using the ‘Volume’ feature on the POD – to make sure that youre getting the hottest signal possible without clipping. Record a couple sample waveforms to check this, and see that there is not more than 1-2cm of space between the top (clip) areas and your highest signal level.

Make sure your DAW inputs are set to the interface, and get tracking !

Tip : If you’re using an amp modeller for your guitar like the line6 pod, make sure you go easy on the treble and presence knobs – somehow line6 has this tendency to add a horrific amount of those which end up making your tracks sound sterile. Bass is another tricky issue to deal with, but bass is generally more controllable during the mixing stage.

The next article coming up in a couple of days – Bedroom Mixing!

Stay tuned, and leave a comment if you have any feedback, or any questions to be answered. Cheers!

Back in March of 2008, the New York Times correctly identified what they described as the CORE of Barack Obama’s promise to the American people, and they correctly identified why reasonable people should be skeptical:

WASHINGTON — At the core of Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign is a promise that he can transcend the starkly red-and-blue politics of the last 15 years, end the partisan and ideological wars and build a new governing majority.

To achieve the change the country wants, he says, “we need a leader who can finally move beyond the divisive politics of Washington and bring Democrats, independents and Republicans together to get things done.”

But this promise leads, inevitably, to a question: Can such a majority be built and led by Mr. Obama, whose voting record was, by one ranking, the most liberal in the Senate last year?

Anyone who possessed more reason than their dog or cat, of course, should have known that the answer to the last question would be a resounding “NO!” If Obama had wanted to be a “unifier,” he wouldn’t have been the most liberal (and radical) member of the U.S. Senate.

And of course, anyone who truly possessed even a shred of bipartisanship wouldn’t have spent 23 seconds in Jeremiah Wright’s demagogic, racist, anti-American, Marxist church, let alone 23 years.

In other words, any reasonably intelligent person should have known that Obama’s core promise as candidate was in actuality a cynical deception from a fundamentally dishonest politician who was cravenly willing to pass off any deceit to get himself elected.

Did Obama even attempt to live up to his core promise? Not even close.

“Don’t come to the table with the same tired arguments and worn ideas that helped to create this crisis,” he admonished in a speech.

That speech – with that hard core partisan attack – was delivered within less than THREE WEEKS of his taking office. Obama was claiming that Republicans didn’t even have a right to present their ideas, much less have any of their ideas or contributions considered. Some attempt at “bipartisanship.”

It nearly immediately became obvious that Obama’s “transcending the ideological wars” was a cynical marketing gimmick offered by people who had no intention of living up to their campaign rhetoric.

Republicans reacted angrily to the president’s change in tone. Mr. Obama and the Democrats were talking eloquently about bipartisanship, they said, without letting the Republicans have any real influence.

“There is a disconnect between the tone of what I’ve been hearing, from the White House and the Democratic leadership, and the substance of what I’ve been hearing,” Sen. Lamar Alexander (R., Tenn.) said on the Senate floor Friday. “We thought what [bipartisanship] meant is that the president would define an agenda and then we’d sit down together and put forth our best ideas.”

If Republicans such as Lamar Alexander actually thought that way, they were as gullible as the American people who swallowed Obama’s lies much the same way that fish in a pond gobble up obnoxious kids’ spit. Like those disgusting snot-filled lougies, Obama’s core promise of transcending the partisanship was something that the American people were so hungry for that they rushed to thoughtlessly gobble up even the most disgusting substitute.

Here’s what Obama recently said to Democrats, again as reported by the New York Times:

Mr. Obama, during his private pep talk to Democrats, recognized Mr. Owens’s election and then posed a question to the other lawmakers. According to Representative Earl Blumenauer of Oregon, who supports the health care bill, the president asked, “Does anybody think that the teabag, anti-government people are going to support them if they bring down health care? All it will do is confuse and dispirit” Democratic voters “and it will encourage the extremists.”

Note to world: Obama is talking about his own citizens. And his hatred for them drips out like venom.

Not only is this caustic remark in no way close to anything even faintly resembling “bipartisanship,” but it is in fact diving to the bottom of the partisan, idelogical watters where the most loathsome bottom feeders reside.

Obama has demonized George Bush, demonized Wall Street (after having cynically taken more campaign contributions from Wall Street firms than anyone), demonized banks, demonized American citizens for exercising their rights at tea party events, demonized car manufacturers, demonized health insurance companies (whom he demagogued as “filling the airwaves with deceptive and dishonest ads” even as HIS administration and party trotted out lie after lie against them), demonized doctors (whom he claimed amputated diabetics’ feet and yanked out childrens’ tonsils just to pad their fees), repeatedly demonized and attempted to undermine Fox News, demonized the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and demonized anyone else who disagreed with his radical agenda.

George Bush never even came close to being such a demagogue. I frankly don’t believe that even NIXON was such a demagogue.

I have never seen such constant demagogic and demonizing rhetoric – against American citizens and American businesses – from a U.S. president of either political party in my adult lifetime.

That divisive demagoguery, in spite of his many promises to heal the divide and restore bipartisanship, is Obama’s biggest failure. And his biggest lie.

A Few Words On Gender.
What is gender? Who created it? Why has it become such a predominant part of society throughout the years?

Gender is not sex. Gender refers to the social and cultural constructions of masculinity and femininity expected to accompany the biological sex you are born as. Gender is society’s manufactured method of oppression by applying that there is an “appropriate” way for divisions of people to act based on how they were born.

The Purpose/Meaning of The Blog.
*Transcend: to pass beyond the limits of something; to surpass something in intensity or power; to excel. (Thanks, Google.)

This is my preferred definition of transcend. When I use the word transcend, I don’t mean to say I’m going to become superior than any other people, nor is this blog to say that I don’t believe people can or do have gender. I’m never one to judge people for their choices, if that wasn’t yet obvious. I just want to present to those who don’t know, that there is a world outside of those roles and gender itself.

I believe only a select few can transcend, greatly due to the fact that one is not required to push themselves past their limits many times in life. My goal is to be one of those people though. I’m determined to create a genderqueer revolution, an uprising of those willing to shake off the shackles of gender and the roles we have assigned to us from childhood and become something beyond gender. Come with me on my journey to Transcend Gender.
