by Salim Abraham .

I happened to visit a strange place last night. There I saw a beautiful house at a distance and walked towards it. I found that the doors to the house were left open. Curiosity got the better of me and I went inside. Inside, I saw a man, he saw me too but walked past ignoring me, patting me on the shoulder, as though I was just a visitor at a hotel. I tried to ask him where I was, but he walked away without responding. So I decided to explore further. Inside that house, I saw something similar to a swimming pool. Also I noticed there were no trees in sight but the weather was very pleasant.

I left that house and continued walking. I found 2 people working with red mud. I noticed that this red mud was obtained by grinding sand stone. They were using this red mud to fill in gaps between the tiles of a small house they were building. The end result of the tile work was beautiful.
I tried asking these workers my doubts as well, but they too did not respond. As I walked further, I came to yet another house. I entered the house and found a woman in European attire. When I tried to speak with her, she called a man, who tried to explain something to me, which I could not understand. I left the house and came to something that resembled a shore. Inside the water, I could see the huge stumps of six palm trees… Well, I suppose they were huge palm trees a long time back. But now all that was left were the dried out stumps. I saw around 3 people trying to pull out the stumps. They succeeded in pulling out one of those stumps neatly and started working on the next. Seeing this, I felt that this stump would be best suited as a show piece. These people too wouldn’t answer me. So I walked on further and came upon a spectacular sight. A glorious sunset….or a sunrise…whichever it was…it was surely breathtaking. But even stranger was the fact that there was not only a single sun, but four suns in the four directions. Very very far, appearing to be only half the size of the sun one usually sees. It was all so strange. No roads or trees in sight. No greenery. The people were strange too. None of the people seemed happy…nor did they seem to be sad. They were not hurrying about either. Just working at their own pace, concentrating on nothing other than their work. I started to feel like a helpless tourist. I wanted to get away from here. I tried asking the people working near the shore how I could leave the place, where the nearest bus stop was. But again no one seemed to care. I started to realize I was no longer seeing our planet. I was on some strange planet, part of a different galaxy perhaps, and did not know how to leave. Perhaps, this planet was on its way to its end with its few inhabitants. As the desire to escape from this place became more intense, I came out of my trance.

Regards.
Praise God.
Praise God.

In order for atheism to be true, an atheist must be able to give a clear and coherent explanation fo

In order for atheism to be true, an atheist must be able to give a clear and coherent explanation for the universe without borrowing from the Christian worldview. Atheists delight in saying that the evidence supporting God’s existence is not sufficient, therefore, they do not believe. However, what they fail to realize is that their very insistence on the use of empirical evidence and logic is actually self-defeating because they are borrowing from my Christian worldview in order to attack it.

The laws of science and the laws of logic cannot be accounted for by someone holding a naturalistic worldview. First, you have no explanation for uniformity and yet science cannot exist without uniformity. Second, the laws of logic are universally used and accepted by humanity and yet they are immaterial and cannot be explained by a naturalistic worldview. Unlike an atheistic worldview, my Christian worldview accounts for the existence for the laws of science and logic. It is God who created and sustains all things and the world reflects the uniformity that He imposed on it (Gen 1-2; John 1:3; Acts 17:25,28; Rom 11:36; Col. 1:17; 2:16-17) and the way we think reflects the same logic that is in God’s thinking because we were made in His image (Gen. 1:27).

Another problem for atheists is that they appeal to universal moral absolutes when they attack Christians for “immoral” events that took place in the name of the Christian God. They also attack the God of the Old Testament for doing certain things that they believe are immoral. However, if God does not exist then where do the universal moral absolutes that atheists are appealing to come from? Without God there would be no uniform source of moral absolutes because any morality that we have would be individual or cultural. How then can a 21st Century atheist judge the morality of the Old Testament God or the followers of Christ many centuries ago? Besides, if atheists only believe in material then an atheistic worldview has no way to account for the existence of immaterial moral absolutes anyway. According to my Christian worldview, God made the universe and everything in it, therefore, God is the measure of morality and He determines right and wrong (Is. 45:19).

The fact that atheists need to borrow from the Christian worldview on all three accounts shows that their own position is untenable and must be rejected! At best, atheists can no longer use the laws of nature, the laws of logic, or moral law to attack the Christian faith. At worst, atheism is self-refuting because it cannot exist as a worldview without borrowing from Christianity. The truth is that it is impossible for God not to exist because without Him it would be impossible to prove anything.

ATHEISM IS UNPROVABLE
Atheists say that Christians have the burden to prove that God exists, but I reject that for two reasons. As I explained in part 1 of this series, atheists are not unbiased judges of truth because they presuppose God’s non-existence by refusing to accept supernatural evidence and they refuse to allow naturalistic evidence to be interpreted supernaturally. Second, atheists cannot account for the laws of science, the laws of logic, or moral laws that they appeal to when attacking Christianity whereas my worldview can account for all. Therefore, since atheists presuppose God’s non-existence before any evidence can be weighed and since their worldview is self-refuting, where do they get a free pass on the burden of proof? As I have already shown, it is impossible for God not to exist, therefore, Christians are wise to presuppose the existence of God and atheists are foolish not to.

The truth is that for a person to say that God does not exist means that they are declaring that they know everything about the earth, our solar system, the Milky Way Galaxy, and the entire universe itself. If they don’t then they are trying to prove a universal negative, based on an infinitesimal amount of information.

In my next installment, “Does God Exist? A Christian Response to Atheism (Part 3): Atheism is Irrational,” I will point out the irrational and unlivable nature of an atheistic worldview.

I was really enjoying this show’s pilot episode until the very last scene, more about that later. The premise: one weekday afternoon all people in the world lose consciousness for a little over 2 minutes. Initially called blackouts, people quickly realize that they all moved forward in time almost 6 months. These dreams were shared so they were not actually dreams but instead flash forwards in time. The main characters are a husband/wife. He is an FBI agent, of course, and she is an ER doctor.

Before turning to some theorizing about the show, a few notes about production. The show seems to have cut some corners, there is a bit of sloppiness throughout. It strikes me as unlikely that the carnage would be as complete as the show depicts. Not to doubt some catastrophes after a 2 minute blackout, but the destruction to downtown LA seems nearly total. And yet there are signs everywhere of poorly placed props as completely demolished cars and corpses are laid next to cars that show no damage, not even a minor collision. When looking through the windshield at the main characters the rear view mirror has been removed yet the mounting bracket remains in place. I cannot help but wish that this was intentional, a statement about the obvious lack of a mirror to track our lives through. As the world is immediately coming to grips with the event, a manager at the FBI asks, “has the Pope chimed in yet?” As though that would be entirely preposterous.

I could not help but groan as we learned the professions of the main characters. The initial premise of the show will eventually be subsumed by the professions and the traditional genres of prime time drama. Given the global nature of the event it would seem the show would not track such well-hewn lines. But, alas, that is the state of TV these days. Of course, there is another reason the show’s producers did choose these occupations: the last scene reveals that instead of an act of divine intervention there is surveillance coverage of some people not losing consciousness like everyone else. An FBI agent will then be able to uncover the mystery. I wish this attack of the airwaves had not occurred. The show, however, helps identify why these genres are so successful: they uncover and also conceal a fundamental anxiety of Americans. These professions all happen while at work because the work never ends. These shows are, fundamentally, about labor and how we do not like to labor. Instead we watch shows about people who have little leisure and yet they love their jobs because it gives them a sense of purpose.

A little bit about the event. It is global. It is a flash forward. It is therefore not technological, it is not the result of a human manipulation. It would instead be the one true miracle. All other supposed miracles are events of interpretation and hence disputable. This event, however, has shared affects. But not only does it represent a true transcendent intervention but it also is an event of representation. During the event people are forward in time looking back upon the event. The remembrance of the backward looking flash forward is then used to propel some people forward into that very leap. The intervention acts back upon itself as not only a signified but also as a signifier. What then do we call a transcendent signifier and signified? I would contend that is the very definition of God.

The main question I am vexed with is about the direction of the show. Will the show remain one of sci-fi/fantasy or will it turn instead into a tale of government conspiracies and become a mystery? I am hoping for a fantasy setting. I want to see people not obsessively grapple with “what happened?” but instead “how do I deal with knowing my future?”. I will give it at least two more episodes.

There is something that many Christians really do not understand. Atheists do not reject Christianit

There is something that many Christians really do not understand. Atheists do not reject Christianity or the existence of God because they have not heard all the arguments offered by apologetics or because they have not heard the proper apologetics yet.

We have heard just about every argument for God’s existence, Jesus’ divinity, the bible’s legitimacy and so on. These arguments do not work. Every single one has failed. Not one of these arguments can bridge the gap between the natural and the supernatural.

What occurs in most Christian apologetics is a presumption of the legitimacy of the bible. So, it fails from the start. Before you can prove that the bible is the word of God you cannot use it as any evidence. The result is a juggling of dogma. Throwing bible verses around does not amount to anything. It is merely circular reasoning.

One of the most troubling things is the claim that the miraculous events in the bible are historically based. This claim reveals a large misunderstanding of how history works. History can only show what is most probable. Therefore, miracles which are the most improbable events can never be used as explanations in history.

All the arguments for God also fail. The teleological, cosmological, ontological, and transcendental arguments, the argument from morality and so on fail miserably. To say that they prove anything is to pervert philosophy. There is also rampant misuse of philosophical principles such as Occam’s razor in apologetics.

Most atheists are open-minded people. It is not that we have not heard all the arguments or haven’t heard the right ones. The reason why I and many others remain unconvinced is because Christian apologetics is an epic failure. The evidence is not on your side and no amount of special pleading will change that.

Critique relates to values, not to objects. The objective world is given in phenomena, but what give

Critique relates to values, not to objects. The objective world is given in phenomena, but what gives the given? This is the domain of values. Values condition the appearance of the objective world. It follows that the method of critique must be transcendental, since the transcendental is concerned not with the objects of experience but with the conditions which render these objects knowable.

In this sense, critique is anti-dogmatic. Dogmatism is the name Kant gives to the uncritical use of existing values, or what Nietzsche called the “higher values”, to make a philosophical claim. A dogmatic philosophy makes a claim about the world on the basis of concepts the principles informing which remain presupposed. Critique entails not simply an interrogation of these presuppositions but the genesis of a new object form distinct from both knowledge and experience.

Critique thus has two components: it functions to limit the claims of philosophical reason, interrogating the pre-existing values informing it, while also constructing a new field of investigation according to new values, a field in which the object is not “always already” conditioned by values. This is the theoretical “objectivity” which critique itself makes possible. Critique, then, is paradoxical by nature: it states that we can only create something genuinely new in terms of self-imposed constraint. An intellectual impulse, dependent on the values which condition the objects of consciousness, is constrained so that a new unconditioned form of objectivity is revealed.

Deleuze writes that the Husserlian “noematic content” relating to the objects of thought or perception “is not given in perception” but “involves an ideational objective unity as the intentional correlate of the act of perception”. This objective unity hovers over objects like an impassable cloud, allowing them to be thought or perceived, but unthinkable and imperceptible in itself.

Critical thinking does not begin freely, it is not a product of free will but of constraint. It follows that there thus must be something in thought which resists the will to think (which is the “free” will par excellence). This unthinking “thing” has a long cultural heritage. It has been identified with evil, the body, death, sin. Psychoanalysis understands it as the “object cause” of desire, as the horrific or terrifying longed for object of the unconscious drive. We will understand it, however, in purely formal, i.e. theoretical, terms as the constitution of critical objectivity.

Deleuze characterises the transcendental field as being composed of a “pure stream of a-subjective consciousness” prior to the world of experience, prior to the world of subjective selves and empirical objects. Following Bergson, he says the a-subjective stream can be thought of as a beam of light. Once the beam hits a surface, it is reflected back and becomes visible. The visible conditions the appearance of visual objects. But what constitutes the visible is the interruption of the beam, and is invisible, strictly speaking. “As long as consciousness traverses the transcendental field at an infinite speed everywhere diffused, nothing is able to reveal it. It is expressed, in fact, only when it is reflected on a subject that refers it to objects.” Visibility and reflectivity are derived and secondary with respect to the obscurity which renders visible. This is why Deleuze was so concerned with cinema. Cinematic forms for Deleuze were critical objects.

One doesn’t have to join a religion to practice meditation. So why not benefit from it?:

‘Transcendental Meditation’s tangible—and significant—health benefits have been confirmed by another pair of heart-disease-related studies. In one, a nine-year look at black Americans with heart disease, those who practiced TM had a 50% lower risk of heart attack, stroke, and death compared to a control group using traditional preventative measures. The effect was so impressive that it was almost as if they were taking a new kind of medication, said the authors.

‘The results wouldn’t shock anyone who’s followed research on TM, the lead author tells the Los Angeles Times. “But this is the first controlled clinical trial to show that long-term practice of this particular stress reduction program reduces the incidence of clinical cardiovascular events.” Another study shows a 52% lower risk of developing hypertension among college students at risk for high blood pressure who attended a TM class.’ -LA Times

This volume deals with certain phenomena that one comes across when stepping out of the world of sense to that which lies beyond it; that is, to the supernormal or transcendental, or whatever people prefer to call it.

It covers a number of very diverse perceptions; and there are, of course, others beyond these in so vast a field of research.

In this region of supersense, we may expect to find the mind expanding beyond normal limits, reaching out to individuals over any distance (in a telepathic sense) and picking up threads here and there from bygone periods of history.

The annual prize includes a $10,000 cash award and was presented at The Center for Fiction’s Annual Benefit and Awards Dinner in New York City on Nov. 9, Booktrade reports.

I keep seeing this book pop up, and I continually remind myself to purchase it. I’m a huge fan of transcendentalist writings, and while Thoreau isn’t at the top of my list, this book sounds promising. Fundamentally, it’s a fictionalized account of a true story in which Thoreau accidently starts a conflagration, scorching hundreds of acres.

In an interview with Amazon, Pipkin continually asserted that Thoreau may have been driven to create his magnum opus “by his remorse over having brought about the destruction of the very thing he so loved”. An in-depth look into such a pivotal event, one that has not been well documented or analyzed, is a breath of fresh air.
I’m excited to pick it up today.
