This Thanksgiving, people who love food may have a robot to thank. Maybe not one to prepare and cook the meal (and only a few prototypes have been designed to wash the dishes), but somewhere in your freezer or cupboard is probably an item that a robot handled.

Since the days of I Love Lucy (and before), companies that make food have been searching for faster, more efficient handling of their product. Interactive Design, Inc. (IDI) an RIA integrator member, tackled a job that would have foiled even Lucille Ball had she been tempted to make fun of handling frozen food on a conveyor instead of chocolate candy.

Expert integrators at IDI used eight Adept Quattro (delta) robots to solve a production challenge for the maker of frozen baked goods. You’ll have to ask Nate Maholland at IDI for the details (I’m not sure how much I can reveal), but whether you are in the food business or make power transformers to keep the ovens working, IDI can help.

RIA members like IDI show us just how versatile robotics are in today’s business world. Most are just as comfortable solving food processing challenges as assembling a new kind of core for transformers. In fact, one of IDI’s customers will use their system to market a patented new process for making cores that meet new specifications from the government for more efficient transformers.

Robotics technology is often just one aspect of a member company’s expertise. IDI is also a member of Automated Imaging Association which reflects their prowess as machine vision integrators. Other times they can provide solutions that take advantage of the latest mechatronics technology, and they have capabilities in more applications and industries than I can fit into this little blog.

A call today with IDI reminded me how thankful the Association is to have members as versatile and qualified as they are and it felt right to share that on our blog site. Who are you thankful for this holiday season?

Owen didn’t come home empty handed from uncle Brandon and aunt Lizs house. He kidnaped Optimus Prime from Riley and Gavins penthouse retreat (their huge bonus room/bedroom). He loves trucks and transformers. After a couple of years little Liam can raid Owens room and reclaim the Prime. By that time Optimus might not look that good (Owen the destroyer), but I am sure there will be “more than meets the eye” (cheesy movie reference) when the time comes.

It has got to be her again. The sexy goddess… with so many controversial comments one after another, with the most remembered comment that she said she “felt like a man” in the show of Transformers 2: The revenge of the fallen, then went and spinned off to be “She is a man”!!! Lol… The news got so “real” that I have friends that went on to argue with all of my Megan Fox friends that we have fallen for a man!! haha..

Anyway, now she goes on to say that she has put up many faces to the public, so has in a way to protect herself… and we will never know what she is really like… who she really is beneath that beautiful body…
Well, it’s fair enough for me that she has her privacy… just keep herself sexy and load us with more pictures and movies and we will ALL be contented!

I went to a class run by my friend about being environmentally friendly, living with less stuff, sustainability, etc. etc. (…more on the content another time…) It was fun, good and invigorating, but yet there is that tinge of hopelessness I could not help but feel once I returned home and realized the issues are huge. Monumental in fact. And they are getting worse, not better, even despite increased awareness. Yes there are things that can be done by individuals such as myself, but it is probably easier to move mountains than it is to change the masses. One rock at a time I guess. One rock at a time.

The one thing I will tell you all is you need to watch “The Story of Stuff” if you haven’t already.

Hay para mujeres, hombres, peques y, como no podía ser de otra manera, fanáticos de Transformers y si eres uno de ellos este pendrive con la forma de su mascota. Es cierto, ya pasó el buzz de la película y no le interesará a muchos. Aunque si eres un fanático verdadero podrás demostrarlo.

Por cierto, tiene 2GB de memoria interna, cuesta US$45 y vas a tener que tener mucho cuidado cuando estés tratando de desarmarlo porque sabemos que frágiles que son este tipo de dispositivos.

A potential difference is induced across the brass pendulum, and the current flows such that it opposes the motion of the pendulum (due to Lenz’s Law). Brass is not a magnetic material, so the magnet is not slowing down by attracting the brass (as shown by the fact that the pendulum with slits in is not slowed down). However, when the pendulum with slits in is swung through the magnetic field, the eddy currents (which cause the pendulum to slow) are not so free to move within it. Thus Lenz’s Law does not have as much effect; the current does not flow as much, so the motion is not opposed as much. This demonstrates Lenz’s Law, and why a laminated core is more efficient in a transformer.

In 2001, Takara came out with a line of toys called Webdiver, which as far as I can tell, involved transforming robots duking it out in a virtual world, much like Digimon or the Rockman EXE games. Galleon here is one of the support toys for the star of the show, Gradion.

Going back to the star of this review however, we have Galleon, who is a galleon. An eastern style dragonboat pirate ship even. We know he’s a pirate ship because he has the Jolly Roger clearly shown on his sails, also, the dragon helm thingy has an eye-patch. And as we all know, only pirates and Kenpachi (and Major Bludd) would wear an eye-patch. We can therefore logically presume that Galleon is a pirate-y galleon.

This is a pretty awesome boat actually. The deck is horrible with lots of obvious robot bits sticking out, however, that’s hardly visible due to the sails. Instead, what is clearly visible is the exterior boat-y bits. From the gold plated carvings to the wood work to the individually ball jointed cannons, this guy is just an awesome boat. Or ship, if you prefer.

Transformation is simple but it gets you to where you want. There are some cheats here and there, such as the entire lower half being a “shield”, but hey, it’s a shield that shoots pressure launched harpoons/ancient Egyptian TORPEDOES.

The dragon man mode is exceptional. He looks great and is as tall as a modern Leader Class Transformer. He’s also crazy articulated for an older toy. Despite being from 2001, he’s actually pretty much more articulated than all but the most posable modern Transformers. I mean, both his upper and lower jaws are articulated, he’s got like, 3 points of articulation for the neck alone, each claw is individually articulated and even his toes are articulated.

He’s absolutely loaded with tons of gimmicks as well, which unfortunately, don’t work on mine. Since after all these years, the batteries in mine have leaked, thus rendering the light up features and infra-red interactive features no longer usable. Even without them though, Galleon is still an excellent toy.

Unfortunately, this guy is not only relatively rare due to his obscurity, but he can be expensive as well. Personally, I feel I’ve overpaid for mine. I was so excited to have found him, I asked the store guy if he could give Galleon to me for an offer price. He told me to just name a price and foolishly, I gave what I felt to be a reasonable offer (about 5000 Yen). I later realized that I should have checked the barcode to find out what the original retail price was (3980 Yen). Although I do feel he’s worth what I paid, I gotta admit, I can’t help kicking myself for not talking the price down more. Especially since my piece has the aforementioned battery leaking issue.

Overall
This is easily one of the best toys in my collection, and arguably a top 3 or 5 candidate. He’s an imminently interesting toy from an aesthetic standpoint, full of quirks and personality. He’s exceptionally articulated even against a modern toy, and he’s got loads of gimmicks you’ll probably never be able to use.

Pros: Exceptional in every way.
Cons: Minor compromises here and there. Rarity and probable price.

When I was first starting to build up my N-scale railway that I had in my office when I worked at eBay, I perused the site for larger lots of track to build up my layout quickly and affordably. I wish I had thought about doing that when I was acquiring my g-scale track. This lot would be a good way to get a bunch of curved track and some miscellaneous other things (transformer, crossing, a couple of switches, and some straight track) that would give a noobie a good start in building their first layout that goes beyond a simple, small oval. A few more pieces of straight track and you could run a layout all over the living room during the holidays…

I’m that guy. The one with the tons of toys in the cubicle. Well, not so much anymore after the reorg, but I still have about ten in plain sight including an old-school Transformer that one guy was totally enamored with.

When I first started putting toys at my cubicle, it was to single myself out as the weird guy, the one who has a personality — to, you know, combat the perception that I was just another web geek who did stuff no one understood. It worked brilliantly, let me tell you. At the new cube, since I’m not technically a web guy (the people on the next floor up do most of the actual customer-facing web design), I’m trying to cut back a bit but it’s not really working. Mostly because the people who sit in this area with me are actually weirder than I am.

Who knew?

Yonks ago, I used to read these comics by Marvel called “What If”. The premise of the stories are how things would be if there were different circumstances, for example… “What if Spiderman Joined the Fantastic Four?”. DC comics also had a similar series titled “Elseworlds” in which they looked at things like what if Superman grew up in the Soviet Union and succeeded Stalin. All the stories had familiar faces and places, but there will be a twist and the story will look at how things could have happen in such circumstances.

It was a fun, light read.. made me wonder on how a lot  of things would have happened under different circumstances. In this spirit, I’m going to present to you my own “What If” series…

After I saw Transformers 2, a film about giant alien robots fighting each other and Her Royal Hotness Megan Fox, a thought struck me.

What if KL is a Transformer?

OK, if KL was going to transform itself into a giant robot, We have to just assume that the KL Transformer can just take bits of KL here, some bits of KL there to make it’s giant robot form. It doesn’t have to be places next to each other coz if I needed to look for places and buildings that are next to each other, my head will explode and we wouldn’t want that do we?

Now we have that out of the way, let’s try to think rationally through this very important question.

The head: This is an easy one. The head has to house it’s brains and what more can be more appropriate than the National Library? I dropped by the National Library a few months back to do some research and I was pleased with the amount of local references and books there. And it only cost you RM2 to be a member! And to top it of, the design of the building is based on a ‘tengkolok’, an old school head gear for the Malays.

Body: I needed something strong, to be the spine of the robot. Options run from the spiritual such as mosques and temples and commercial buildings. But I think I’ll settle down for the Bank Negara building. Our national bank issues out money dammit! It’s like.. “ooo, I think I need RM50million tomorrow, let’s call the printers and tell them to print a bunch”. You can’t get any more powerful than that!

Hands: Hands are used to pull and carry things (among other things). I view the robot hands as a metaphor, the pulling and pushing and cajoling of the country’s prosperity via corporate and commercial entities.. These are the big companies that employ hundreds of thousands of people and produce goods that we all need.

Legs: This was much easier. I wanted something that is solid, a figurative base to the robot. I chose the KLCC building as Petronas is the custodian of our nation’s oil reserves, and the the wealth generated by oil goes back into to the people, making it the base of the nation (I’m reaching, am I?)

And thus, KL Transformer v1 is complete!
