This article was developed and posted on the ScribD website almost a year ago and has been ranked by Google as the fourth most linked and accessed document on the Greek Church Fathers out of 965,000 documents with the same search criteria. I was quite amazed.

Τhe purpose of the document is to help those with skills in New Testament Greek to transfer their expertise into translating Patristic writings.

It has now taken a second step and is being posted in HTML format here in WordPress as an alternative to the pdf at ScribD.

Portions of the text were updated as well which it make it much clearer and more detailed. Unfortunately it was discovered that Perseus has recently updated their software and it has changed its interface. It will take time to look into this and adapt the article to these changes.

Navegando por internet encontré esta página muy interesante para todos los traductores, pero en especial para los que les interesa o se dedican a la traducción en el campo literario. Saltana es una publicación electrónica en donde encontrarán, en palabras textuales en la introducción a la revista: “poesía, narrativa y ensayo de todas las épocas y tradiciones nacionales en edición bilingüe o multilingüe, de cualquier lengua al castellano, el catalán, el vasco, el gallego y el portugués, o viceversa. Las traducciones incluyen tanto versiones modernas como versiones antiguas”.

Es muy interesante el enfoque que tiene, en donde se resalta la trascendencia del profesional de la traducción como “creador y presenta el arte de la traducción en acto, como procedimiento transitorio y provisional por el que los textos se transforman y pasan no sólo de una lengua a otra, sino de una literatura y una cultura a otra”.

While surfing the web, I came across this page, something of great interest for all translators, but in particular, for those who are interested in or work in the area of literary translation. Saltana is an electronic publication in which you will find, in the words of the journal’s introduction, “poetry, fiction and essays from all periods of history and national traditions, in bilingual or multilingual editions, from any language into Spanish, Catalan, Basque, Galician and Portuguese or vice versa. The translations range across modern and ancient versions.”

Its focus is quite interesting, as one which stresses the translator’s transcendence as a “creator by showing the art of translation in action: a transitional, provisory process through which texts are transformed and turned not just from one language to another but from one literature and one culture to another.”

Last night, while waiting for the boyfriend to come home, I decided it would be a fantastic idea to search Amazon for translation resources, just in case this mad idea of becoming a freelance translator actually turns out to be a good one.

The obvious place to start was with dictionaries. After all, nobody can translate without at least one dictionary. So I started by looking up the specialist dictionaries we use at work and went on from there.

I was amazed by 2 things. Number one, the price. OK, I was expecting them to be quite expensive (my big Collins German-English / English-German dictionary cost about 40 quid and that was 4 years ago), but some of these prices are ridiculous. OK, this one is still quite reasonable at a mere 12 pounds, but how about this… a used book for over 200 pounds?!? I wish I was joking! Admittedly it is slightly better on the German Amazon (only 120 euros for a new one) but still… who has 120 euros just lying around? Looks like this translation lark will be an expensive business!

And the second thing that I was surprised by… how many subjects dictionaries exist for. Take a look at this one for example. A dictionary for Holz. That’s wood to us English speakers. Yep, that’s right. Wood. As in the stuff you get from trees. How many words can there possibly be relating to that topic? Well, enough for an entire dictionary it seems. Or how about an English/German mathematical dictionary. And there was me thinking maths was all about numbers. It seems I have been mistaken all these years. But this is the one we all really want. The Yacht Dictionary. Oh yes. Becasue how could any book collection ever be complete without it?

Y’know, I’m not actually sure where I was going with this post. I kind of had this vague idea that it could be an interesting topic, but either it really, really isn’t or I just can’t write (spare my feelings and tell me it’s the former, ok ) Either way, I’m still going to hit publish. It’s not like I have anything else to talk about these days…
