Here in the English-speaking anime and gaming internet communities, analyses of translations are nev

Here in the English-speaking anime and gaming internet communities, analyses of translations are never uncommon. Whether it’s to praise a localization or to condemn for whatever reasons such as inaccuracies or censorship, it’s something that comes packaged with media coming from other countries.

One thing we do not see as often though is how Japan reacts to localizations of our cartoons and video games. As such, I’ve compiled a list of some interesting posts, blogs, etc. which look at the world of Japanese-English adaptations from various angles.

Adventures in Localization, MW2 Edition

The most recent thing to come up, apparently the Japanese release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is marred by poor translations overall, which are leading some Japanese games swearing that they will buy the Asian English-language version of the game before this. Sound familiar?

Sakae Moon Street

See this Japanese fan discuss those wild and crazy cartoons from America such as Ben 10, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Code Lyoko! He mostly posts plot summaries and information on voice actors and such, but also posts fanart sometimes, and has a gallery full of his older works. He also speaks some English and has even translated a few posts, such as in his review of the Avatar episode, “The Blind Bandit.”

I think that “Colosseum”, “Macho” and “Sumo wrestler” are loved particularly in the American cartoon. The picture of this film is wonderful. And there are a lot of highlights as for the action scene. I think this action scene is rivaled to “Matrix” or “Ghost in the shell”.

Toph’s character is like a princess more than I had thought. She is keeping the weakness secret on the other side of strength of vender power. I like it. However, of course, she is tough too. And I am surprised because Katara grew up tougher. The director of Avatar wants to show that Katara looks senior compared with Toph, isn’t it?

Dekadenbiyori

In the blogger’s own words, “I don’t know why, but translated Japanese things attract me.” Dekadenbiyori is quite unusual though in that it reviews the English translations of Japanese works FOR Japanese readers, something which I imagine doesn’t have the largest audience but is still a fascinating subject. See here as he tears apart the poor localization of the Shakugan no Shana light novel and its inability to not make the main character sound “special.” You don’t need to know Japanese in order to understand his disdain for this translation.

Burning Becky Review

Japanese Super Blogger and Mitsudomoe fan Tamagomago writes a review of a most unusual manga called Burning Becky. The comic’s style is heavily based on American super hero comics, right down to the cover with a logo in the upper left corner as well as English sound effects and the very fact that it’s a manga about a super hero. Tamagomago himself wrote the post as if he were an American speaking Japanese. This one isn’t so easy to read so I’ll provide a little sample. I had planned on translating the entire article here for English-speaking readers to enjoy, but that hasn’t happened. At least not yet.

One of the good points about American Comics is that they’re so dynamic and exciting, one might say that they’re practically illustrations in their descriptive power. This is likely the result of refining techniques for the sake of including so many characters on so few pages. Of course that’s dependent on the individual artist and so it’s not universal.

Hot on the tail of Chapter 1’s summary is Chapter 2’s! This and the translations come earlier than expected due to me realizing finals are next week! I totally forgot about them! I kept thinking they were weeks away but when I looked at my calendar, BAM! Next week. Gah Kitsune! You fool! DX

On another note, yeah! Sentai is going to release Mariaholic in the states! I haven’t personally read/watched this series but I love the manga Dazzle which is by the same author so hopefully I will have the same love for Mariaholic! =D

Man, I have so many series to get with Sentai!

Petit Four

Chapter 2: Potage

Translations: here

For Summary, click below:

The chapter starts off with Mei giving us the low down on what’s happened. Basically she’s temporarily running her grandfather’s restaurant in hopes of restoring it to its former glory along with 6 unique staff members.

Mei rushes into Petit Four as she finishes her monologue. Yuuta, the playboy server, jumps her screaming for help.

A battle has manifested between Seiji, the tightass manager, and Isamu, the crotchety chef.

Rewind the clock to find the reason behind this fight: Seiji and the servers are busy cleaning the shop. Seiji is being a tightass and demanding perfection when it comes to cleaning. His shouting pisses Isamu off who comes out of the kitchen to tell Seiji to shut it. Kazuki, the clumsy server from the previous chapter, flees to Isamu’s side and asks the chef rescue him from Seiji’s demented cleaning tactics. Kazuki notices something on his hand when he touches Isamu: flour. Isamu says he’s covered in flour because he was doing some preparations in the kitchen. He shakes out his apron to emphasis on the flour part. Seiji gets a heart attack over this as there is now flour on his once clean floors.

“And well…”
“This and that happened – thus bringing us to the present situation.”

Mei: =_=;

Both Seiji and Isamu go at it, Seiji yelling at Isamu for doing whatever the hell he feels like and Isamu counters saying Seiji is a tightass XD

Mei watches this and decides this can’t go on. She tries to invoke the help of the other staff members to implement the Let’s all be friends! battle plan.

Shizuka, the wine guy, goes “…no.”

Yuuta, the playboy server, says he’ll do it for a date.

Kazuki, the clumsy server, says he’ll do whatever Mei needs done.

Mei just looks at them. Really people? Really? Aren’t you worried about the fighting going on?

Then the boys start questioning if they should interfere.

“Let sleeping dogs lie.”

Chelu comes to Mei’s aid saying he wants Isamu and Seiji to be friends, much to Mei’s happiness. Mei tells Chelu he’ll cover Isamu while Mei takes Seiji. Upon hearing who he’ll have to watch over, Chelu laments that he’s not Mei’s guy after all. Lol, Chelu is scared of Isamu! This part ends with nothing being solved and dinner starting.

Dinner is going normally. Seiji asks where Kazuki is when things are so busy! Mei tells Seiji Isamu took Kazuki to wash dishes. Seiji storms over to the kitchen to demand why Isamu took Kazuki for such a reason! Isamu gets angry at Seiji’s hostile attitude.

“Shove it!”

“Just shut your mouth and carry out my food!”

This causes everyone to go quiet. Before things heat up any more, Chelu jumps in and informs Seiji that due to the large volume of people being served, they’re running low on silverware and thus the need for Kazuki back in the kitchen. Seiji swallows this with difficulty but lets it go. He turns to Shizuka, the aloof server, for aid instead. Mei asks as well. Shizuka isn’t too happy but he does as asked.

Eat your burgers and die...

Some customers get ready to leave. Mei decides to go see them off with Seiji. Seiji is very cheerful, especially when he hears the customers compliment on the restaurant – this surprises Mei. Dinner ends without a hitch.

Mei goes to find Seiji and tries to explain Isamu’s behavior. Seiji says he’s not angry over what happened. He acknowledges problems will happen.

“The food Matsuo-san cooks is first class. That fact is something I can state with confidence.”
“However, a restaurant cannot rely solely on food alone. In order to eat good food, you need to have it provided with good service.”

“That’s what we servers are for!”

That and to be pleasing on the eyes!

Seiji basically talks about his love for Petit Four. Mei realizes that because Seiji is the only one here who truly knows Petit Four, it’s only natural that he would be so adamant about restoring it. Mei and Seiji talk more. Isamu listens in and has a shit-now-I-feel-bad look on his face.

The next day, Isamu tells everyone to meet in the deluxe suite for a surprise. Chelu and Kazuki come in with a cart loaded with good looking food. Everyone is happy but Seiji takes one look at the food and trouble begins:

“Why did you use the ingredients for Lunch Set A to make this meal?”

“These ingredients are of high caliber!”
“To use them for something like this is a waste!”

Isamu says if Seiji doesn’t like it then don’t eat it. Seiji states the problem isn’t the food. It’s Isamu.

As Shizuka says: “Round 1.”

Isamu and Seiji go at it. Kazuki and Chelu try to keep the two from tearing one another apart. Mei is freaking because she doesn’t know what to do.

“I want you two to knock it off…”

Who just said that?

…

CHELU!?

Yes, ladies and gentlemen. Chelu just went bipolar. He tells Isamu and Seiji off for their behavior and how they are causing problems for everyone with their bickering.

“If you two want to be part of Petit Four’s staff, then get the @#$% along for the sake of this restaurant!”

After that grand speech, Chelu faints XD

Mei takes over, explaining how both Seiji and Isamu are important to Petit Four’s future. Shizuka totally ruins the mood by eating the food brought while this is all going on. But from his eating, Mei gets inspiration:

Food Analogy time~!

This time, everyone = soup.

=_=;

“In this soup, you have different colored vegetables merged together into one dish!”

“If we’re always fighting, we can never join together for this restaurant.”

“But, if we believe in one another and accept each one of us for who we are…”

“The flavor that can’t be brought out by one vegetable alone…will become a delicious soup.”

I have qualms about this – like what about tomato soup? Or chicken noodle soup? But this isn’t about me.

After realizing their potential as soup, Seiji and Isamu apologize to one another. Kazuki is so moved he wants everyone to do a huddle (that’s a baseball player for you!). Seiji is reluctant but when Isamu says he’s game, Seiji is forced into joining the huddle.

The chapter ends with Seiji thanking Mei for helping realize what was going on. He smiles at Mei which makes her blush! Cute.

While she’s in fantasizing mode, Seiji turns onto the other staff members and promptly order them about, making everyone laugh. He’s still a tightass. Seiji turns to Shizuka and says if things get busy he’ll be asked to be a server again. Isamu says that if the kitchen gets busy, he’ll also be asked to help. Everyone is smiling and happy except for Shizuka who is looking to the side in an I’m-not-happy-with-this mien on his face.

I hate you people...really...I do...

The other day, I was reading about Arthur Rimbaud and how he felt he had to go through a systematic deconstruction of his entire reality in order to harness his creativity. Inspired, I wanted to read the results of that self-study and promptly high-tailed it to the university library. An hour or so and a volume of the complete works later, I was bitterly disappointed by how awful the translations were. Luckily, this edition features the original French side-by-side with each bastardization, so with my meager abilities, I was able to recognize the lyricism inherent to the original, which had been utterly lost in the translation. Not wanting to be a hypocrite, I decided to put up or shut up, and I attempted a better translation myself. I’ve attempted to retain Rimbaud’s elements of swagger as much as possible without losing the original meaning (or what I understand that to be, at least, since it’s been a full eight years since I’ve had a French class).

Alors, without further ado…

The Awestruck
To Mr. Jean Aicard

Dark ones in the snow and in the mist,
At the big vent that illuminates it,
Their butts in a circle,

On their knees, five so wee, — misery!
Watching the Baker making
The heavy light bread.

They see the strong white arm that whips
The grey paste, and that slips it
Into the chasm plain:

They listen to the good bread bake.
The fat-smiled baker
Sings an old refrain:

They are nestled, not one stirs
At the red vent’s breathing
Warmth like a breast.

When, late some night
Full of brioche pastry glaze
He takes out the bread,

When, under the smoked-out beams
Sing the sweet-scented crusts
And crickets;

This hot hole breathes life;
Their hearts in such delight
Under their rags,

That this feels like the good life
To those poor little ones all covered in frost,
That they are there, all of them,

Sticking their muzzles small and pink
To the slats, and saying things
Between the gaps,

The whisperings of prayer;
Bent toward this light
Of the reopened sky

So strongly, that they split their pants
And their white diapers shiver
In the winds of winter.

The Original

Et les grillons;

Que ce trou chaud souffle la vie;
Ils ont leur âme si ravie
Sous leurs haillons,

Ils se ressentent si bien vivre,
Les pauvres petits plein de givre,
Qu’ils sont là, tous,

Collant leur petits museaux roses
Au grillage, et disant des choses
Entre les trous,

Des chuchotements de prière;
Repliés vers cette lumière
De ciel rouvert,

Si fort, qu’ils crèvent leur culotte
Et que leur lange blanc tremblotte
Au vent d’hiver.

Send me an e-mail if you’d like to see the crappy translation (the one that’s crappier than mine, anyway). It’s still under copyright, so I don’t think I’m allowed to reproduce it here.

*Edited to say that I just found a far superior translation by Joshua Mehigan: Alarmed. I’m going to leave my own up here since this is supposed to be a blog of my projects and practicing. Maybe I’ll eventually be as good as Mehigan.

Coming back with her 3rd album ‘I Be…’, singer Ivy talks about the scandal that she had with Super J

Coming back with her 3rd album ‘I Be…’, singer Ivy talks about the scandal that she had with Super Junior Kim HeeChul 2 years back.

Ivy was on MBC FM ‘ShinDong and Kim ShinYeong’s ShimShimTaPa’ on 2nd December when she said, “After the scandal, I wanted us to remain as good friends, when I was caught in another scandal, he just suddenly stop contact with me. I tried to call him, but it was some girl who picked up the call.”

It was later known that Kim HeeChul has changed his contact number without notice. And Ivy talks about HeeChul changing his contacts without notice, “Really mean. And recently I met him at a broadcast centre, and I told him ‘Heechul, you wait and see’” sending him a joking warning messge.

ANOTHER ONE:

On December 2nd, during her guest appearance on MBC FM ‘Shin Dong and Kim Shin Young’s Shim Shim Ta Pa’, Ivy (real name: Park Eun Hye) addressed the supposed scandal she had with Super Junior’s Kim Heechul 2 years ago.

In 2007, back when the nation was swept with the ‘Ivy Syndrome,’ a scandal between Ivy and Heechul broke out, claiming that the two had a romantic relationship. Both parties denied the dating rumors and the scandal eventually dwindled down over time.

The sexy singer revealed on the radio show, “After that scandal, I was still able to remain good friends with Heechul. However, when a different scandal about me arose, he suddenly stopped contacting me. I tried calling him, but another girl picked up the phone.”

Later, she discovered that Heechul changed his phone number without her knowledge. “It was really mean,” Ivy expressed sarcastically. “I bumped into him during a broadcasting recently and I jokingly said to him, ‘Heechul, watch your back.’”

Netizens commented:
“Ivy must be very lonely…”
“Can’t she take a hint?”
“When I looked at the picture on the right, I thought, ‘Wow, Ivy came out pretty good,’ and then I realized… it was Heechul… kekeke”

Although most Korean netizens were pretty harsh in their response(s), I gotta hand it to Ivy for putting up with the constant barbs from the public. Despite the pretty shady move pulled by Heechul, I’m pretty sure deep down that he’s still Ivy’s #1 fan.

Tony of Tony’s Book World said Amelie Nothomb is a “Must Read Author”. He said: “If you start to read her books, you will continue to read her books.” Apparently, The Complete Review gave him the scoop. Well, Tony is right.

This book warrants every point of the B that The Complete Review gives it. I think it just missed out on a B+. But, her other grades being what they were, Amelie threatened to be a one-woman grade-inflation-machine. The Complete Review got this one right which makes me eager for her higher scoring submissions.

The Stranger Next Door is a very odd book, though the premise is simple. A retired school teacher and his wife decide to move out to the country for the peace and solitude. They find their dream house, “the House”, and settle into their golden years. Their life is ideal.
Emile Hazel narrates his and Juliette’s experiences that first year in the country.

After one week in the House, we were convinced we had never lived anywhere else.

One morning, we took the car to the village to buy groceries. The store in Mauves was a delight to us: it didn’t sell much, and this absence of choice made us inexplicably joyful.

This is not a novel about planning a dinner party or a story about strolling through Kew Gardens, however. The same afternoon they return from the charming grocer, their neighbor comes to visit:

[A]t about four o’clock, someone knocked on the door.

I went to open it. It was a fat man who seemed older than I was.

“I’m Mr. Bernardin. Your neighbor.”

What could be more normal than a neighbor coming to make the acquaintance of new arrivals, particularly in a clearing consisting of two houses? His face, moreover, could not have been more ordinary. I remember, nonetheless, standing there frozen, confused, like Robinson upon his first encounter with Friday.

Emile is onto something. This is not just a neighbor, this is a stranger. Mr. Bernardin’s opening salvo is longer than any of his other utterances on that first visit, or the second, which occurs at precisely four o’clock the following day. The pattern is set.

The stranger, only made more strange by their knowing his name, continues his routine of arriving at four every afternoon. Emile and Juliette soon realize that he intends to continue visiting at that hour daily in perpetuity. This would not seem to be a major problem, only Mr. Bernardin rarely speaks and, when he does, is very concise. Emile and Juliette find this disconcerting, plus, they have no desire to be held captive to the punctual stranger next door.

Their first attempts to dissuade Mr. Bernardin’s neighborliness consist of attempted murder by kindness. When Mr. Bernardin perseveres, they try mocking him. Nothing seems to work and they cannot decide whether he is an imbecile or diabolical.

The question becomes more urgent and more difficult to answer when they finally meet Mrs. Bernardin. Mrs. Berardin and her situation become the impetus that sets in motion a series of startling plot developments, all of which serve Amelie Nothomb’s philosophical and moral purposes.

This novella is packed with delights which are humorous, grotesque, philosophical, and moral. Despite being so slight, the book is not an easy read. The prose is crisp, but the mood is unsettling for everyone, including the reader. Emile and Juliette and the reader have time to consider whether lack of choice really is “inexplicably joyful”, and the answer is driven home with the force and speed of thumb screws. The payoff is worth the wait, however, when deeper questions regarding manners and morals begin to demand answers.

Emile and Juliette are reactive characters, but circumstances eventually force them to choose. Husband and wife each answer in their own way, with serious consequences for both of them and for the Bernardins.

While this is not one of my favorite reads of the year, the originality of the story, the sprinkling throughout of literary, philosophical, and mythological references, the prose, the humor, and the weight all guarantee that I will try others of Ms. Nothomb’s works. If this is her worst, I am in for some treats.

GD: What makes the song attractive is the melody that’s like a whisper in your ears, and the stringed instruments in the background that fill up the atmosphere of the song.

TOP: Also note the lyrics that reflect the image of the drama.

The MV is about wanting to express how you feel to the person you love, and is definitely worth seeing. The Big Bang members, who always show a different side of them in each music video, also film their own love scenes.

VI: When I was performing as a solo artist in Korea, the concept was ‘sexy’ so I asked the director to put in a kiss scene in the music video. (laughs)

YB: I kept thinking to myself that it’s just acting since it’s I’m not in love with the other person, but it was still awkward and embarrassing.

DS: I’m the only one who hasn’t filmed a kiss scene yet! (laughs)

In Korea everyone’s busy with individual activities. G-Dragon released his solo album and stole the number 1 spot on the charts. TOP is acting in the drama ‘IRIS’ starring Lee Byung Heon.

DS: The fans loved Leader’s solo activities and so did I! His performances were really great.

GD: TOP’s drama is really exciting. Even when I’m in Japan, I watch it online because I want to know what happens next.

Big Bang has no time to rest, not with activities in Japan, Korea, and solo promotions. Are there times when you just want to run away from it all?

TOP: We really thoroughly prepared an escape plan once. But we failed. (laughs)

YB: If we ever run away, I want to go to Okinawa. But we’d get caught straight away so maybe it would be better to go to America. Just kidding, we’ll work really hard in Japan too so keep rooting for us!

-Long time no see.
YB: It’s been a while. Well it’s actually only been 3 months since we last came to Japan but it seems like it’s been ages!
TOP: We can finally let everyone hear a new song. Our last powerful single, ‘GaraGaraGO!!’ let us show the power of Big Bang before returning to Korea, but we’ve now returned with a song perfect for the cool weather nowadays. It will warm your hearts.

-I see! Your new single ‘Let Me Hear Your Voice’ seems like a soft, truthful song that has blended all five of your voices together in perfect harmony.
All: Yes! Please listen to it.

-It’s got a completely different atmosphere to your last song. Was there any difficulty in singing a quiet, calm song? You also once said that “singing in Japanese is hard”.
DS: It isn’t a genre that we’ve never attempted before, so it wasn’t that hard. It’s a lot easier to sing in Japanese now because of all the difficult pronunciation practice.
YB: When we sing a dance song, it requires a lot of preparation. Before we sing it, we have to consider our movements and expressions through performances so it takes a lot longer to prepare for. But ‘Let Me Hear Your Voice’ had a slow tempo so the singing was the most important part. It didn’t take as long to make as a dance song, so it was very easy to prepare for.

-When you’re recording a fast-beat dance song, do you think about your dance moves as well?
YB: Of course. When it’s that type of song, T.O.P actually dances while he records. We consider these things even during recordings.

-It must’ve been nice then since it’s a song where you can just concentrate on your singing.
GD: Yes. It makes me happy when I’m singing it, too. It makes me feel warm inside. I also really like the lyrics.
DS: There are so many parts we like.
YB: But when we sing it on music shows, it’s disappointing that we can’t sing the whole song. The parts we like are cut to make the song shorter. It would be nice to be able to perform the whole song…It’s disappointing. Really.
VI: Yes. Like this part (sings his favourite part)
Everyone: Sounds good~
(Everyone starts singing their parts- the interview studio has become a live accapella concert hall?!)

-Thank you (laughs). About “Let Me Hear Your Voice”, how did you feel when you heard it was chosen as the opening song for the drama “Ohitorisama” starring Mizuki Arisa?
YB: We were so happy that people would be able to hear our song through a drama.
GD: I was really surprised that our song would be used as the opening song for a Japanese drama. I’ve seen quite a few Japanese dramas before and the opening songs were all really good songs, so it made me wonder ‘Are our songs classified as one of those good songs now too?’
YB: I have a question; Do the lyrics to our song fit the content of the drama?

-Yes they do. It sort of wraps around the drama.
YB: That’s a relief!
DS: I’m so happy. I’m seriously happy to hear someone say that.
TOP: At first I thought that not many people would hear our song, even through the drama. But I hope that lots of people will become interested in us and our other songs as well. Because it’s so cool to have a future where you can enjoy music and dramas together.

-The main character is a woman in her 30’s who works very hard. What do you guys think about women like that?
YB: My type of girl. I like women who are independent and can think for themselves.
VI: I like them.
GD: I think they’re brave in a way. It would be cool to be able to share thoughts and feelings with a woman like that.

-You have another new song “Ora Yeah!”
YB: The beat and chorus is good. It’s easy to sing along to and I think it’s a song that makes you want to get up and dance.

-It’s a dance song so did it take lots of time to prepare for?
YB: Yes. This song makes us want to sing “Ora Yeah!” with the audience, and that’s the type of performance we want to do.
DS: We danced while singing during the recording too.
YB: We really want to perform this live. We even put in performance parts, imagining how excited everyone will get. It’s a song that I hope you’ll look forward to.

-I’ll look forward to your live performance. What kind of year was 2009 for you guys?
TOP: I think we spent our time really well, especially since we were able to perform in Japan and stay here for so long. We were really busy though.
YB: We were here for so long that we were able to appear on Japanese TV shows. We had a great time following our Japanese schedule.
VI: It was a year where we felt close towards Japan.
TOP: We discovered lots of attractions in Japan too.

-For example?
TOP: We found lots of yummy Japanese restaurants and were able to enjoy our time promoting in Japan. At first everything was new and strange to us so we felt lonely and confused, but after finding out how great Japan is, it has become a year where we’ve been able to become used to life in Japan and concentrate on promoting more.
YB: It was also a year where we were able to meet lots of new people. We’ve met so many people in Japan and made lots of friends. That’s another way we’ve come to like Japan.

-Give us a prediction of what Big Bang will accomplish in the future.
GD: I predict … that 5 boys with great strength and power will soon dominate Japan …
TOP: I really want that to happen. We weren’t able to have a Japan Tour this year, but next year we plan to. It’s still only being planned at the moment so we’re promoting heaps so we can reach our goal of having a Japan Tour.
YB: Our Korean schedule has already been made so we’ll be really busy next year too but I really want to have a tour in Japan.
DS: We’ve already started planning it now, so I think once we carry it out it will be the best performance ever. I’m confident that it’ll be great so I hope everyone looks forward to Big Bang next year, even more than this year!

Richard: I never thought two players from different schools would be such a great combination!!

Mifune: Stop right there!

Page 19

Mifune: It’s the High Schoolers’ win

TRANSLATION:

This is Champagne which was sent to the neighbour 1 year and 5 months ago
This kid who had grown up well came back

Even though he’s definitely just back for a whileㅋㅋㅋㅋ

The reason why Champagne was sent to the neighbour last year is
As much as this sounds like a nonsensical lie;; It’s not a lie;;

Heebumie was suffering from aphasia* (-┏)

After Champagne came, this kid doesn’t even cry (make noises) and just move around with a smile on his lips
After bringing him to the hospital, the doctor said..

“As the owner doesn’t play with him and only took care of the other kitty, this kitty became stressed”

The dorm auntie and I, both of us were shocked….

Thus, Champagne was sent to the neighbour to stay for a few days, and when did this happen

“Meow!!”

(-┏)

For some reason, the feeling of this meow

“Ah, other than me, you don’t need anyone else!! Think of me only, take care of me only, treasure me only!!”

This feel..

Ah! The crowd has gathered together^-^ I’m going to play my game ㄱㄱ

* Aphasia is an acquired language disorder in which there is an impairment of any language modality. This may include difficulty in producing or comprehending spoken or written language. – As quoted from Wikipedia.
