Romaji Translator

Romaji.com is a must-have tool for all those learning to read Japanese. Instead of translating Japanese words straight into English, it only converts them into romaji.

Personally, this tool is a life-saver for me. To me, translating entire phrases or sentences directly into English kind of feels like cheating. Sure, I might get the general idea of what it’s trying to say, but that doesn’t mean I can actually read it now. Romaji.com allows me the chance to test my knowledge. Using this tool after a while (along with a few others that will make it to this blog eventually), I’ve noticed myself picking up a lot more Japanese words than I would have expected. Now, I might not necessarily understand what a particular word means, but I can at least take pride in the fact that I can effectively read and pronounce it.

However, there are some cons to this tool (although they’re not very big ones if you have a pretty basic understanding of Japanese).

1. It’s not always entirely accurate…but, at the same time, it is. The only thing I’ve really experienced with inaccuracy thus far is the translation of　”私は　（わたしは）”. Although this is pronounced “watashi wa”, it’s written “watashi ha” and that’s how Romaji.com is going to translate it. So, if you don’t already know about the wa/ha thing, you might sound kind of silly using “watashi ha” in spoken sentences.
2. Spacing. Since the Japanese language doesn’t normally incorporate spaces into their writing, this translator needs to figure it out all on its own…and it’s not always right. We’ll use ”私は　（わたしは）” again as the example. If you input “私は” into the translator, you’ll come up with “watashi ha”…but, if you input the words entirely in hiragana, it’ll tell you it’s all one word, when it is indeed two. Again, you may have to have some general knowledge of the written language to be able to tell how the words are really supposed to be broken up.

Aside from those two minor issues, I’ve never had a problem using this translator and (also aside from those cons) it’s always been accurate. It’s great to help you recognize kana and kanji characters.

Looking at the ten rules of crowdsourcing identified by Jeff Howe in Crowdsourcing: Why The Power of The Crowd Is Driving The Future of Business, few questions come to mind:

1. Pick the right model. Are you trying to create a platform for volunteers to contribute to a worthy cause or are you looking for cheap labor?
2. Pick the right crowd. Do you think that being bilingual qualifies a person to translate or do you believe that professional translation requires professional translators? How would you feel about surgery done by an amateur surgeon?
3. Offer the right incentives. Is it right for a venture capital funded company to offer a token payment for professional services? Is there a difference between that and the same token payment offered by a charitable non-profit organization?
4. Keep the pink slips in the drawer. Can you attract volunteer professionals who will deliver at the same consistently good level you are accustomed to from your paid staff or freelance translators?
5. The benevolent dictator principle. Can a volunteer community function without a community leader?
6. Keep it simple and break it down. Can you divide the work into the smallest possible components so that the crowd can divvy up the tasks? Will it work to have a collection of individual sentences translated by different people?
7. Remember Sturgeon’s Law. According to the science-fiction writer Theodore Sturgeon, 90 percent of everything is crap. Can you achieve the desired quality?
8. Remember the 10 percent, the antidote to Sturgeon’s Law. Can you identify the best and brightest in the crowd to work on your project?
9. The community is always right. Who is in control? Is it possible to guide and control an online community?
10. Ask not what the crowd can do for you, but what you can do for the crowd. Does the project meet the needs of the crowd or rather the needs of the requestor of services? Will the crowd participate if its needs are not met?

To me, the notion of translating has always held laborious connotations. A flashback to those green and white Latin textbooks with miniscule charts of conjugations and tenses. Translation equaled time-intensive research and required at least one or two dictionaries in addition. It was what the traditional librarian embodied: someone accustomed to getting lost in the stacks scouring ancient and obsolete volumes, meticulously searching for exact meaning.

What’s new?

Blokes from Down Under

This weekend I had the most interesting opportunity to help translate  for a band that came to Buenos Aires from Australia. I was translating. Well, at least that’s what I was told I would do. I ended up doing various other tasks as well. Yes, I got to be “behind the scenes”. Glamorous? No.  Really, it wasn’t them, it was more me. I had slept for 3 hrs the previous night. I was on my feet (but like, literally) for 17 hrs. I had one hot dog to eat in the entire day, and I got to deal with yelly and demanding people.

It was tough. I won’t lie. But I will say that just when I was on the verge of breaking down, something positive happened. I was extremely thirsty and a guy insisted on buying me a coke. I didn’t have a jacket (weather.com lied to me…said it was going to be 60F with no rain; more like 50F with rain and wind) and a guy offered for me to use his jacket. I didn’t turn down the offer. When I was taking the bus home, it was packed like sardines. I began to black out because I was so smooshed. Just when I was about to get off the bus and wait for the next one… the couple next to me got out of their seats and I was able to sit down for the rest of the ride. I suppose my story does have a positive side.

The only thing I couldn’t recover well from was the fact that it was my dad’s birthday. And I couldn’t give him a call for anything. My cell phone doesn’t dial out to the states and I was out of my house from 7AM- 6AM. It was impossible. And not being able to tell him happy birthday and that I love him… well, that hurt me a lot. It was icing on the cake.

The weekend wasn’t a complete loss, however, I did get to hear my DJ professor perform (and WOW! he’s AMAZING!).

Also, I made 2 new friends from here in Argentina. They’re sweethearts and I hope to get to know them better soon!

Serving

Whether you wait tables or are “serving someone/church/organization”, you learn a lot. Patience is key. You are not someone of worth. You are not the invited guest. You are expected to perform the task at hand and do it with excellence. You won’t receive strong words of encouragement, but if you do a bad job, you will get an earful. Really, doing this takes a lot of energy out of you. You’re bound to feel drained and to loose your sense of purpose quickly.

But you have to remember why you are doing it all to begin with. You can’t really be doing it for man (the person/organization/etc), even though what you’re doing is done in the physical. You see, all the little things you do, the details that are put into the job….those things will never be seen by the person you’re serving. Even if they saw them, they probably wouldn’t really care; or maybe if they do say thank you, maybe you don’t feel as if that’s enough.

I think serving is easier when you serve someone you love.

And serving is easiest when the love is mutual.

Perhaps when you love someone (or the organization/cause/whatever) you won’t feel like serving is work! Maybe it will just be something that comes naturally, and maybe it’s something that you’ll volunteer for with joy.

People who have never truly served will never be able to fully appreciate whenever they are living life in abundance. They hadn’t paid the price…how can they understand the cost?

Either way, when I am or I am not serving someone/something that I love, I have to remember to always serve unto the one I love: Jesus. Maybe this is one of the ways of storing up your treasures in Heaven. (Matthew 6:19-21) This must be what He meant.

But in order to be happy, we need each other. Well, obviously, we need God first. Then we need each other.

You can have confidence in someone and not  show them love.

But you can’t love someone and not be confident in them. Love always holds hope for a person.

Remember that what you’re doing is ultimately not for them, and their selfish ways.

What you’re doing, you’re doing for a bigger reason, and a bigger cause. You’re serving God.

Do you know?

• How much a decent recording software costs? Sonar, Soundforge, or something similar?
• How snot is formed? I have been battling allergies for a full month now, and I always have so much snot! It’s disgusting and it makes no sense to me. It’s like I have a snot factory in my head.
• Why do people rush to get somewhere, only to wait for another hour?
• Does anyone want to help me get signed up for the Master’s program here in the Universidad de Belgrano? I’m considering paying someone to help get me organized and do the dirty work for me. Not. Even. Kidding.

Die Telefonate mit fremden Ländern gehen gegenwärtig primär über zwei unterschiedliche Wege, entweder beide Parteien sprechen die entsprechende Landessprache oder eine Partei hat einen entsprechenden Übersetzer an der Hand, der die Informationen durch das Telefon weitergibt. Dabei muss die Kommunikation natürlich in einem 1:1 Dialog erfolgen bzw. sequentiell ablaufen. Die erste direkte Übersetzungsmaschine gibt es für das Apple IPhone – ein Text wird z.B. englisch eingesprochen und in eine andere Sprache z.B. Spanisch transferiert. Die Besonderheit einer direkten Übersetzung birgt natürlich auch einige Risiken ist aber mit sicherheit eine Chance um langfristig für jede Person die direkte Kommunikation in anderes Land zu ermöglichen.

Desde antes de entrar no mundo colorido da Google, já era um fã incondicional. Acredito que ninguém goste realmente do Bing, da Microsoft. Apenas gostam os que pagam de alternativos. Haha! Mas né? Vamos pro que importa: o novo design, a reformulação do tradutor do Google, que pra mim, melhorou um milhão de vezes e irá completamente mudar o conceito de tradutor. Nunca ví uma ferramenta em web 2.0 mais instantânea do que essa (o Google Wave não vale, tá?). Ou ví e não me lembro.

O novo tradutor da suporte a 51 línguas, incluindo Português e algumas das demais línguas mais remotas do planeta. Ou não. O mais legal de toda a ferramenta, foi a parte instantânea, que traduz cada palavra, quiçá cada letra, que você escreve instantaneamente, não fazendo-te clicar em botões e afins. Prático. Google.
