Sim, é galhofa pura. Matadores de Vampiras Lésbicas (Lesbian Vampire Killers) vem com vários clichês do cinema trash, desde a tipografia da abertura, passando pelos adolescentes de dezoito anos que são interpretados por atores de trinta até as diversas piadas sexuais do gênero.

A história é simples, um cavaleiro das cruzadas teve o amor da sua vida roubado por Carmilla (Silvia Colloca), a rainha das vampiras lésbicas. Revoltado, o cavaleiro McLaren forja uma espada mágica para acabar com a vampira lésbica, mas antes de ter sua cabeça decapitada, Carmilla invoca uma maldição na linhagem de McLaren e sobre a cidade, que teria todas as suas mulheres, a partir dos dezoito anos, transformadas em vampiras lésbicas. Jimmy (Mathew Horne) é o último da linhagem de McLaren que por manobra do destino, vai passar as férias na tal cidade amaldiçoada e a história se desenrola.

Mesmo com tantos clichês, Matadores consegue se sobressair e ficar bem interessante. Grande contribuição do carisma dos atores, principalmente Fletch (James Corden), o gordinho que só faz gordice e que não está nem aí para derrotar as vampiras e que faz algumas citações nerds. Além de ter uma nerd gostosa, Lotte (MyAnna Buring).

O diretor Phil Claydon, que tem apenas três trabalhos atualmente, deve tomar cuidado com os recursos utilizados como slow motion seguido de fast, que é usado irritantemente em demasia. Ponto positivo para as sutilezas para quem tem o ouvido apurado, como músicas que completam as cenas, ou pequenos efeitos sonoros, que enriquecem o filme. Temos que citar Friday The 13th, seriado dos anos 90 que serviu de inspiração para Supernatural. O filme tem todo o clima do seriado e fica bem colocado na tela grande da sala escura. Matadores me fez lembrar Grindhouse e creio que esse era o objetivo. E claro, um final digno de Van Helsing. Ok, não vou soltar spoiler! Agora nos resta ficar de olho na continuação, Gay Werewolf Killers.

But, her new album, I Feel Cream, is solid solid peaches. Dirty. Raunchy. Gender bending. Back bending. ASS UP! It is only so fitting that Amanda Blank opens up for her. -There is barely any info on the dude, but his full name is Ishmael Ledesma. He’s had a great great musical history, touring with the likes of Kool and the Gang, Natalie Cole, Rick James, and more. He was a part of many disco bands in the seventies and eighties. When I first heard this song, I was addicted. It had the Anita Bell-esque disco feel to it. It took me a while to realise that it’s actually a man singing this song. Awesome. Put on your platforms!

-All I know is that they’re dutch. I guess that says enough. A.K.A. they know How To Party. They have so much knowledge that they christened their recent album with the title, The Art of Partying. The album is Italo-disco meets house. It’s alright…it’s an album that you’d definitely need more help with the first time, like maybe a few beers…shots of Jack’s…some wine perhaps? It doesn’t have the air of say, Modeselektor or Junior Boys, where you can chill out to it at home or dance to it at a house party too! It definitely has tracks that stand out but not many. Enjoy this one, my fave off the album =)

-Six piece band of Indonesian awesomeness. Seven years of playing together produced two eclectic albums, Centralismo and Ports of Lima. You can tell they are influenced very very much by the West yet there is still the Pacific feel behind their tones. Centralismo is apparently one of the TOP FIVE Asian albums worth buying (according to The Times Asia). Plus, the Rolling Stones Indonesia praised PoL as the best album in 2008. And they really really do deserve it. Their music is genius and almost impossible to put into a genre. I felt such a release listening to Sore. Finally something away from all the Stereogum and Pitchfork hyped bands. This is super fresh. Get a glass of wine.

-AAAAH yes. Another electro-pop duo from Montréal. Haven’t really heard much of their stuff…and I think Omnikrom’s alright, but their collaboration on this is pretty solid.

-Vapours is easily one of my top albums of the year. UGH, Nick Thorburn and crew have done it again. the Islands, based out of Montréal (WHAT WHAAAAAAAAAAAT!) create the catchiest indie rock with lyrics to match. I recently saw them at Théâtre Plaza and their magic on stage is no short of one feels while listening to the album. Dressed all in white, armored with silver vests and gold collars, they rocked out in style. I got there a bit late, unfortunately, and I guess they must have played my favorite song of theirs (ahem, below!) in the first fifteen minutes because I didn’t get to hear it. My heart ached a bit because of this…but I think it’s OK. This song, is defs on my top list for the year end and was my soundtrack song for New York while I was there.

Soviel Improvisationstalent sucht man im Westen bis auf den heutigen Tag vergeblich! Selbst wenn ein Wessi die dazu gehörige Anleitung zur Verfügung gehabt hätte, so gehe ich doch jede Wette ein, dass er aus den zur Verfügung stehenden Materialien noch lange kein funktionsfähiges Empfangsgerät hätte zusammen basteln können.

Sogar jahrzehntelange IKEA-Erfahrung reicht da nicht an die mangeltrainierte Findigkeit eines durchschnittlichen Ossis alter Schule heran. Ein bisschen mehr Demut steht dem Westen hier also gut zu Gesicht!
Wohl an, lieber Westen: Es muss endlich schluss sein mit dieser Überheblichkeit!

One of my good friends has a girlfriend.  They are madly in love (or in lust) with each other.  They are one of those couples that is in constant communication.  They are constantly video-chatting, Blackberry Messaging, or telephoning.  I know this because the other night, I crashed at his place after a night out.  She lives far enough away so that they can only see each other about once every two weeks.  That is, if you don’t count video-chatting as seeing each other.

Anyway, the other night, I was amazed when he disappeared for no more, no less than two hours into his bedroom for a video session.  He emerged hungry and went immediately into the kitchen.  As he was setting some water to boil for pasta, his phone rang.  His soft, delicate tone of voice revealed who he was talking to. I could only imagine what they were saying, but I’m assuming their conversation began something like this:

Friend: Hey.

Girlfriend: Hey, I missed you, and I was calling to make sure you were able to log off iChat okay.

Friend: Yes, I am fine, but the thirty-eight seconds between that time and the time you called were the hardest I’ve ever had to deal with.

Girlfriend: I know.  It was the same for me.  I was constantly thinking about you.

Friend: Same here.  So what have you been up to?

Anyway, you get the gist.  Their relationship is sickening.  I don’t think I’ve ever been able to talk to a girlfriend for three nights in a row without getting bored.  What the hell could they possibly have to talk about for the 78% of their waking minutes spent talking to each other.

i’m in this strange emotional cycle where i fluctuate between being entirely too intense and full of feelings and being completely vacant and devoid of energy and passion. it’s such an all-or-nothing pattern. quite an exhausting one.

the reality of next year is impending. i have only a few more classes left to complete before i graduate from nyu – then i’m off to find my own jobs, gigs, whatever means of making a living i can with my limited but very specific skills.

maybe i should have chosen a different art concentration.
or maybe none of them are easy right now. i suppose artist and musicians are known for working really hard and living in cardboard boxes despite being the most brilliant individuals.

anyway, i insist upon having fun despite all this anxiety.

i was “cigarette girl” at trash this weekend. i walked around in my underwear and collected emails to promote the scene/parties.
then i fell asleep in the greenroom and realized that it’s a surprisingly soothing place to sleep, what with the reverberations from speakers and such. i had a nice nap until the security tool woke me.

i did some new art too. not gonna lie – it’s based on some alt model photography. anyone who follows the genre can probably figure out who the girls are.

i’ve been told my work has a bit of a “stiff outsider feel.” i’m trying to make my pieces less 2-dimensional. something about them just isn’t coming to life.

i’m off to orchestra. rehearsing some john adams and kodaly and brahms….nice lineup for the next concert.

Sobre o meu final de semana eu infelizmente vou manter a discrição, falar sobre a minha vida é boring e vulgar uma vez que ela se resume em alcolismo e prostituição (mãe, é tudo brink ok). Mas vou falar da minha sexta feira 13 pelo menos.

 Depois de séculos des que eu terminei o meu ensino médio eu resolvi ir ao noitão HSBC nesta sexta feira 13, totalmente desinformado como sempre e esperando filmes de terror quando na verdade era especial amor dos 3 filmes que passaram 1 pelo menos era absurdamente engraçado! No Brasil o nome do filme foi traduzido como “À moda da casa” mas o nome original é “Fuera de carta”, odeio não costumo gostar de filmes com o tema “amor” por que eu sou uma alcolatra amargurada mas este eu tenho que recomendar por que é mara!

O segundo filme que assisti era “aceitavel”, mas não lembro o nome logo pode considera-lo como “whatever”. Ja o terceiro foi um ahaza quarterão do cinema frances para pseudo cults experientes, o maravilhoso “Perfume de Yvonne”! Ahazô geral, nocateou a sala inteira, uma sinfonia de roncos e pessoas dormindo no chão…

 A cena das pessoas dormindo e babando umas nas outras foi tão familiar que me lembrei de um noitão de sexta feira 13 que ficará para sempre no meu coração, de quando eu ainda era uma pequena garotinha…

 Foi um combo de filmes de terror maravilhosos, mas o destaque da noite definitivamente foi “O fastasma do rock”, título original “Phantom of the paradise”. Esta na minha lista de filmes trash favoritos que ficarão 4ever in my heart.

“Fuck the White Stripes, long live The Sonics!” steht zu dieser Veranstaltung auf der Homepage der Astra Stube geschrieben. War ja klar, dass ich da hellhörig werde. Die Party-Reihe TEENAGE KICKS zieht unter der Eisenbahnbrücke ein und macht ordentlich Radau mit primitivem 60s Punk, groovigem Soul und wilder Surfmusik. Dazu hat man sich The C-Types eingeladen, die beim schönen Label Hazelwood Vinyl Plastics unter Vertrag sind (u.a. auch Mardi Gras B.B., King Khan). Dort hat man ja ein Fabel für ausgefallenes. Und in der Tat lassen sich die Vier C-Typen auch net so richtig einordnen. Ist das nun Surf? Tango mit Gitarre? – Naja man sollte sich’s anhören. Der Eintritt ist übrigens frei, da kann man ja eigentlich nix falsch machen… Los geht’s um 22.30 Uhr.

Once you are level 8 or above, some customers will want to use a bathroom after eating their meal. These customers will not give you a thumbs up (to improve your popularity) until they have used the bathroom.

Therefore, if you do not have an available, clean toilet, the customer will leave with a toilet icon above their head, and will not increase your popularity. Hence, having enough toilets for your customer base assists your popularity.

A janitor (previously cleaner) will be able to clean the toilets whenever they require cleaning, hence allowing your restaurant to continue running smoothly. In addition, they can clean up trash as well (this will add to your coins, gourmet points and towards your trash trophies, as if you cleaned the trash yourself). When there are no toilets or trash to clean, they will just generally act as though they are cleaning your restaurant, by scrubbing the floor, or similar. Recently, janitors have gotten anew function; they also fix your arcade machines if you have any.

I have always spotted money in the street. Unfortunately, I only found this half dollar bill. And no, it is not worth 50¢.

Es gibt Filme, die sind einfach nur schlecht. Man langweilt sich zu Tode und hat am Ende das Gefühl 90 (oder im schlimmsten Fall noch mehr) Minuten seines Lebens verschwendet zu haben. Und dann gibt es da Filme wie “Die Faust des schwarzen Drachen”, die so schlecht sind, dass es einfach eine Freude ist, dem stümperhaften Treiben zu folgen.

Die ersten 20 Minuten allerdings sind erst einmal pure Langeweile. Da muss man durch. Hier wird dem geneigten Zuschauer die völlig wirr erzählte und belanglose Story um einen Mädchenhändlerring, sowie alle inhaltslosen Charaktere vorgestellt. Wirklich kein Charakter bekommt irgendwie ein paar nennenswerte Eigenschaften verpasst. Sie sind alle einfach “irgendwer”, entführtes Mädchen, amerikanischer Agent oder Mädchenhändler, das war’s dann auch schon.

Nachdem der Zuschauer dann mit den Charakteren und der Handlung vertraut gemacht wurde, geht’s los mit der Action. Die Handlung vergisst der Film ab diesem Punkt komplett und stattdessen wird geprügelt, was das Zeug hält. Und hier beginnt der Film dann endlich unterhaltsam zu werden, denn so viel unfreiwillige Komik findet man sonst nur bei Steven Seagal.

Die Schnitte sind zum Teil absolut grausam, man merkt es sofort, wenn die Kampfszenen nicht am Stück gedreht wurden. Doch abgesehen davon legt der Film auch keinerlei Wert auf Logik. Hier springt man mit Motorrädern über Autos, ohne jede Rampe oder holt ein Auto zu Fuß in weniger als einer Minute ein. Auch wird in den Kämpfen kein Martial-Arts-Klischee ausgelassen. Die Bösen tauchen immer aus dem Nichts auf und natürlich muss während der Kämpfe auch ordentlich geschrieen werden. Dass die eine oder andere Choreographie ganz ordentlich ist, fällt zwischen diesem ganzen Blödsinn kaum noch auf.

“Die Faust des schwarzen Drachen” ist purer Trash. Wirklich gut ist hier gar nichts. Doch wenn man das ganze mit Humor sieht, kann man hier trotzdem unterhalten werden und mit seinen Kumpels eine Menge Spaß haben.

While I was at the Pacific Garbage Patch this summer, the crew found a plastic umbrella handle in one of the nets they were dragging behind the ship. Apparently, umbrella handles are a common type of plastic pollution in the ocean. Captain Moore has a whole collection of umbrella handles he’d collected from various beaches over the years. He said you find so many types of plastic trash on beaches that you have to decide what you’re going to collect. He chose umbrella handles. Still, it baffled me. How did umbrella handles appear out here? Water bottles I understood, but umbrella handles?

Today I got my answer. While on a jog through Brooklyn I saw umbrellas strewn across the wet pavement now that the rain had passed. I saw at least ten broken umbrellas lying on the sidewalks and in the streets. And then I saw a lone umbrella handle less than a foot from a garbage can. The photos above are the two umbrellas.  I realize that the wooden handle probably won’t end up in the Pacific Garbage Patch, thus the arrow isn’t intended to be misleading but rather to show a general trend, trash on land = trash in the ocean. The handle may end up in the mass of trash forming in the Sargasso Sea.

Making these connections, now that I’m back on land, is really quite unsettling.

A few weeks ago Enviro Girl stumbled across PERF Go Green biodegradable tall kitchen garbage bags for sale at her local hardware store.  She’s noticed this store stocking many environmentally friendly products; no surprise, as the owner seems to appreciate nature and wildlife.  (If the three aisles of bird seed and bird feeders indicates anything.)  When her roll of garbage bags ran out, Enviro Girl remembered the “green” garbage bags and grabbed a box.

Her box of PERF garbage bags totaled just under $6.00 with tax, but Enviro Girl is used to paying a little more green for greener products.  She shrugged it off and brought it home.  The bags fit her kitchen wastebasket like a glove, the handles slightly elastic and gripping the top of the container.  Maybe they were a better bargain, she mused, they were much stronger than the cheap roll of “Ruffles” bags she usually bought.

Enviro Girl’s family of five (plus one semi-stray cat) generates 1.5 tall kitchen garbage bags of waste every week on average.  About 20.5 gallons of trash total each week — a little more during the holidays and less during the summertime — so she estimates their landfill contribution at 1,066 gallons of trash a week.  These bags are made from recycled plastics and within 2 years they are completely broken down.

Feeling virtuous with her new “green” trash bags, Enviro Girl consciously upped her compost heap contributions.  At $0.50 a bag, these babies weren’t cheap and she would try to save both money and garbage by committing to filling only ONE 13 gallon bag per week.  She’d pay extra for these greener bags and that would be an incentive to use fewer trash bags, all good for the environment, right?  By reducing her garbage by 1/3, she’d have to become an even more vigilant consumer and recycler, but she’s Enviro Girl, it’s what she does!

And then realization smacked her in the face like a bamboo bo staff! Enviro Girl was the hapless victim of green-washing.  She’s embarrassed and mortified to admit it.  She should have known better.  She began thinking about her self-righteous investment into biodegradable plastic bags made out of recycled plastic and realized the contradiction.  Biodegradable plastic?  There is  no such thing! Plastics are not biodegradable — they are “oxo-degradable.”  They don’t degrade into nothing or even into anything helpful or harmless.  According to this article in The Guardian, these biodegradable plastics require very specific temperatures and humidity to break down, neither found with any reliability in a northern Wisconsin landfill.  And these special bags take a lot of energy and oil to make.  They’re not a “green” choice for the environment by any stretch of the imagination.  Enviro Girl was as well off using her “Ruffles” plastic bags for 7 cents a bag for all the environmental benefits of either option.  And arguably the best option is NO trash bag, or reusing bags.

Enviro Girl will use up her expensive green-washed trash bags and return again to using “Ruffles” until she can find a better option.  And she’s going to speak to the manager of the hardware store and tell him what she learned.  For all she knows, he’s a hapless victim, too.

We aaaall know who they are. Antonia Marat and the infamous Redd Corrumbia. No one can pull off doing chores (while still looking great) quite like them. I’m really excited to show off this laundry room because it’s hard trying to manage a completely bare room and transforming it to something unique. Hopefully this will give you an idea of how you can finally decorate that extra space.

euni’s blog hq

Oh dear, Euni. I think we spent atleast 6 hours a day trying to put this puzzle together. Euni Kira had asked me to help her put together a blog hq. A very genius yet diffcult plan. Euni definitely wanted a vintage yet modern theme so we got the ball rolling quick because I thought it was a great idea as well. Just remember though, money cannot buy precious moments like jumping on a 350L couch.

Hace algo menos de un mes, la banda madrileña “InsomniA” presentó su primer álbum, que lleva el nombre de la banda y ha sido totalmente autoproducido. El evento tuvo lugar en la sala “Ritmo y Compás” de la capital, que estuvo a rebosar.

El quinteto madrileño ha trabajado muy duro para “dar a luz” este álbum y no defraudó a su gente. Sus temas, que van desde el heavy-rock hasta el rock tradicional, pasando por el trash y toques de metal progresivo, hicieron las delicias del respetable.

Ahora, se encuentran preparando una serie de conciertos para dar a conocer este primer álbum.

La banda formada en 2002, está compuesta por Luichi, Kiler, Alberto, Mike y Ángel aunque originariamente Alberto y Ángel no formaban parte de la misma. Os dejo sus dos webs para que podáis escuchar sus riffs agresivos y melodías más clásicas.

Brownfields are abandoned once industrialized locations that suffer from pollution and deserted heavy factory industries. Unfortunately, as hazardous as these locations might sound, the poor make up a large population in these dreadful lands.

A newly proposed green movement actually advocates a full sweep of a green revolution into these neighborhoods. With the combination of reducing poverty and protecting the environment, a switch to a greener life-style can actually be what those in poverty need. With greener jobs and a switch to new forms of alternative energy, these brownfield dumps can be the starting point for the domestic transition to a greener world.

Not only is equality and the economic status change to a richer community, but the abandoned locations can make as great wind farms, solar power sites, nuclear power plants that give the poor jobs and incorporate them into the policy making process that opts for the green movement. Is it a coincidence that both “eco” show up in both economy and ecosystem? The two are both dependent on each other and luckily, we’ve found our starting point in the revolution.
