Bali has had an image of bliss, probably since as early as the 1930′s. To this day it remains one of the most popular tourist destinations out of the whole 17000 islands that make up Indonesia. With a selection of the finest beaches in the world, and arguably some of the finest Bali beach resorts to boot, it’s easy to see why tourist flock back year after year.

There’s so much to offer in Bali – it’s home to an incredible variety of flora and fauna, and home to a wide diversity of wildlife. It doesn’t take long to explore the island either – it’s only around 70 miles East to West, and just over 100 Miles North to South. Bali’s landscape includes stunning mountains – two of which are actually active volcanoes. That’s the reason why Bali is so popular with backpackers – because of the range of excellent, well-priced hostels.

If you’ve come to Bali in search of pure luxury, then you should be looking to stay in Nusa Dua. It’s where the latest ‘hip’ crowd enjoys cocktails by the beach, and is home to nearly every international five star hotel chain. Here.  I can now reel off the 15 countries without taking breath but I don’t think anyone takes it in, so I usually just stop at saying that the first place is Japan.

2.  On hearing that the first country is Japan - “Is that going to be safe? / Are you still going to go to Japan? ”

Well, as far as I know 120 million Japanese people are managing ok and only occasionally sprouting extra limbs.  I’m sure there’s Japanese people worried about coming to London because they think they’ll get bombed on the tube.

3. “Are they keeping your job open for you?”  

Then on being told unfortunately not – “But you love your job!”   I know, I’ll be sad to leave, but if I don’t go now then I probably never will.

4.  “Do you think you will come back engaged?”

This is only asked by people who don’t know me very well.  For the avoidance of doubt, that’s a firm no.

5.  In a similar vein “Are you planning on starting a family once you get back?”

Even among my friends who were too polite to ask, a lot of them were thinking that this trip was by way of a “last hurrah” after which Mr Beet and I will promptly settle down and pop out 2.4 kids before our tans fade.  The thought had never crossed our minds, plus we will be homeless, unemployed and skint.

6.  “Do you think you’ll decide not to come back?”

Lots of people think that I’ll decide to jack it all in to become a bar-tender in Cambodia, a sheep farmer in New Zealand or a yoga instructor in India.  I’m somewhat flattered that they think I have it in me to do something that interesting, but no – I love London and I plan to come back and pick up more or less where I left off.

7.  “Are you going to Indonesia / Costa Rica / Nepal  etc?  It’s awesome!”  

No!  Stop giving me ideas – I’ve already ruthlessly pruned the itinerary as it is.

8.  “Where will you be for Christmas?”

Happy to, but there’s about 20 people in there already so it will be a squeeze.

10.  “Are you excited?”
