TravelPod was pleased to accept the award for Excellence in Social Media Applications at the Canadian New Media Awards in Toronto on Tuesday.

This year was the first time an award was given out in this category. Its purpose is to reward a website that “demonstrates excellence is connecting a community of users through a variety of different tools and functions”.

Thanks to the hard working selection committee, the judges and everyone who participated in the event.

Thing 11 – really liked the Traveler IQ challenge! And I did pretty well too I had already planned on joining the Texas School Librarians Ning when I get the jobby job. As far as the list 2.0 goes, I was surprised by how many I had heard of just through my own searches and reading.  In fact, in this week’s Time, there is a quick blurt about free software.

Thing 12 – Rollyo – have named it “Lookit” and it is now on my bookmark bar. I set it up for resources and ideas for the classes I’m taking now.

And I have to say I really enjoyed reading the posts on WordPress about “The Wire”. It, too, is in Time this week.  Now what am I going to do on Sunday nights?

If you have plans on Monday, cancel them. What you should be doing is heading over to DemoCamp7: where Ottawa startups demonstrate the next generation of tech products and services that will make the headlines.

Here are the details:

Democamp 7 will take place on Monday, January 28th from 7pm to 9pm at the Clocktower Pub on Bank Street just south of the Queensway. 

 Protecode Demo – demonstration of a tool that unobtrusively detects, logs, and identifies external content during software development. This tool is used to automatically create records of Intellectual Property ownership and licensing attributes of external code (eg Open Source modules or snippets) that enter a project.

Distributed Musical Instruments - Software that will allow MIDI files to be replayed on different sound modules. This will be a demo of an entry level process leading to a system creating a Virtual Musical Sound Studio.

The Traveler IQ Challenge – Demo of a viral marketing app gone wild. In June of 2007 the TIQ was launched on Facebook to promote TravelPod, since then it’s been launched on Friendster, TravelPod, TripAdvisor and virally on 4000 other syndicated websites. The TIQ has now taken a life of its own generating millions of monthly unique visitors and driving significant traffic to TravelPod.com.

JohnnyVoIP – Initial beta of a social communications platform tool that is currently available on Facebook allowing users to forget about downloading, installing, and finding their friends – just click on a link.

Time waster for the moment…

One that you can totally justify spending totally Inappropriate amounts of time on with the excuse that “I am brushing up on my general knowledge!”

And for those losers (like me) on facebook, you can actually add it as an app and challenge your friends to the high scores. How cool (in an entirely lovably nerdy sort of way, of course) is that???

TravelPod was named as a finalist in the “excellence in social media applications” category of the Canadian New Media Awards.

Why, you ask?

Developers at this website created a little Facebook application called Traveler IQ. The addictive geography game took the world by storm last summer. Everybody and their mom spent days trying to improve their Traveler IQ by clicking as closely as possible to the CN Tower on a frustratingly small world map.

The game is still going strong and it’s recently been set loose on other social media platforms such as MySpace, Friendster, Bebo, Hi5 and Orkut.

The winners of this year’s Canadian New Media Awards will be announced November 18, 2008 in Toronto.

Quer testar seus conhecimentos de geografia pra ver se não passaria a mesma vergonha que aquela moça que achava que a Europa era um país e nunca ouviu falar na Hungria, mas sem o constrangimento de ser visto por milhares de pessoas nem ter o vídeo exibido no Youtube?

Nesse joguinho no site Travelpod o objetivo é apontar no mapa mundi onde fica determinada cidade [ou monumento ou acidente geográfico ou... ah, que seja: lugar]. É necessário atingir uma pontuação mínima para passar de fase; quanto mais perto você apontar o lugar solicitado, maior a pontuação. E quanto menor o tempo, mais pontos também.

Um mouse que não engripa ajuda bastante.

Cheguei à fase 7, por enquanto. Sempre me dou mal no Oriente Médio e na Ásia… mas pelo menos acerto o continente!
