Upon arriving in London via Eurostar Mic and I had to take the London version of the subway changing trains twice, then catching a ferry to our final destination. We didn’t have time to go to the hotel and went straight to the gig. We finally made it to the Holiday Inn Express about 11:30 pm and were told by the front desk that online access was not free. We were beat by then and really needed sleep considering a 7:45 departure from the hotel to get to the airport. So, here are a few pics from the London experience.

We boarded the plane and a huge rain cloud with high winds started pounding on us. We took off 30 minutes later after it passed. The plane ride was long and had a few bumps along the way that caused a loud simultaneous ohhh from many of the passengers. The pilot changed altitude to try and settle the flight down. After a 10 plus hour ride we reached SF and had to circle for about 30 minutes and the pilot said it was due to clouds and congestion at the airport. Meg says it’s because we needed to burn off some more fuel so we wouldn’t explode upon landing. All I can say is that I really wanted off that plane after being confined for so long. Glad to be home.

The next adventure is down south where the band is playing the Nokia Theater and then traveling to a location near San Diego for a second and final gig that run.

After that we will be in Vancouver for New Years Eve.

Thanksgiving will be a special posting where we will spend the day at Meg and John’s home.

Also, I am starting culinary school in January in an effort to improve upon my cooking skills and knowledge. The New Year will be a time for great changes. Last year was tough it marked a year of great loss for us and we are ready for 2010.

Thanks for hanging out with us. ~Julia

the utah thing started with desert solitaire, edward abbey’s book about wild places and humani

the utah thing started with desert solitaire, edward abbey’s book about wild places and humanity. my ex-partner, the american, gave me a copy when we were first in love, and after we broke up we decided to rendezvous in salt lake city for a week of adventure. our first night in town, someone stole his hunting knife while we cooked dinner in the hostel. we left the next morning, taking the bus to a spot just south of provo and then walking out to the highway. it was sunday: the minivans and suvs flew past us non-stop, but every seat was filled. after spending the night sleeping near a gravel pit, we managed to hitch five good rides (all stories in themselves), and were suddenly in moab.

i love utah.

i’m thinking about the desert, and trying to remember what it felt like to be so hot, to have so much sun that you’d actually avoid it. that first visit to utah, it was november and though the days were warm and sunny, it rained at night and i bought a sweater at the mormon-run version of value village. the second trip, when i drove down with another partner-at-the-time, it was june and we baked to the degree that it actually limited our activities: hiking could only be done from 3 pm to 7 pm, between the lessening of the heat and the arrival of darkness, and anything else had to be in close proximity to either ample water or air conditioning. luckily we found the creek that the bike punks in slc had told us about, and the moab library was not only cool, it has won awards for being an amazing small-town facility.

if you and i are in love with each other, chances are we’ll go to utah at some point or another.

This morning I made my throat achy and raw by retching over the toilet for a while, trying to throw up as neatly as possible. Luckily, I managed to not throw up at all, and so went to school despite lingering doubts about my health. If I had swine flu, I’d know, right? From what I hear, it’s a more sudden and violent affliction than this sort of creeping tiredness, nausea, absentmindedness, and headache that I’ve had on and off for weeks now.

I even forgot about tonight’s Billy Bragg concert until about 6:45 this morning, at which point I pretty much decided that I don’t want to go. I hadn’t even remembered to get tickets.

I don’t know what’s wrong with me, except that it’s been cold and dark and rainy for weeks now. Summer feels like it passed faster than ever before. It took me a while to realize that I missed the first couple months of sunshine and warmth: Instead, I spent April, May, and June in Melbourne, where it was cold and dark and rainy.

I already had my winter, and am not coping well with another one hitting me again so soon.

Thailand is a country of varied natural scenery from the mountains of Mae Hong Son to the limestone islands of the Andaman Sea. With something to interest any type of tourist, Thai culture can be found in sculpture and architecture, music, dance and cuisine. Bangkok, the cultural and political capital of Thailand, has over 400 temples of differing styles to discover.

Distance from Bangkok, Thailand to other cities
The climate of Thailand is determined by the monsoon, which produces tropical weather conditions throughout the year, resulting in high average temperatures. The seasons are marked by changes from rainy to dry months rather than by any temperature differences as found in Europe and elsewhere.

A 2009 anonymous health survey given to Washington and Lee undergraduates shows that about 18 percen

A 2009 anonymous health survey given to Washington and Lee undergraduates shows that about 18 percent of female respondents have experienced rape or attempted rape. That’s two times the national college average for sexual assault, says Dr. Jane Horton, Washington and Lee’s director of student health. The report shows that 39 percent of undergraduate women attending Washington and Lee responded to the survey- 341 women in total.

“We feel comfortable that our survey is representative of our students’ experience here,” said Horton.

Commonwealth Chronicle reporter Cameron Steele takes an in-depth look at sexual assault at Washington and Lee as part of an on-going investigation about gender relations on local college campuses. To watch the package and hear Steele speak on the Rockbridge Report broadcast about her in-depth series about gender relations and sexual assault at local colleges, click the video below.

My connection is really slow, so hopefully I can get my post finished tonight. Last night we were in Copenhagen and it was rainy, windy and cold. The hotel was nice and the venue was good. TOP sold out and the crowd enjoyed the band.

During the train ride Mic and I met a drummer from Sweden named Hokan Nyberg who is from Malmo and is a David Garibaldi fan. He plays in the Nationaltheatre Rockorkestra. I will be posting a picture of Mic and Hokan once I can get a connection in which I can post pictures.

We are in Gronau for 2 nights and heading to London on Saturday. We had a wonderful dinner at the hotel. We enjoyed salads from the salad bar, cream of tomato soup, and I had perch in a coconut curry sauce and Mic had beef and chicken with mushrooms and potatoes in a light gravy.

It will take us 8 hours on 4 different trains (3 transfers) and the tour bus will take about 10 hours to get to London. We will be traveling under the English channel in a tunnel on the bullet train…it should be interesting. We traveled once again on the ferry from Copenhagen traveling from Denmark to Germany and this time it was during the day, so we got to see the channel crossing. We fell asleep and the conductor had to wake us up to get us off the train and we were the last people off. Everyone gets off the train when it is on the ferry. The London gig is supposed to a be big deal, so hopefully all will go well. I’ll try and keep you posted.

We will be walking to the town of Gronau today where the venue Burgerhalle is located. Gronau is very suburban and reminds me of Hayward. We had to walk 5 kilometers from the rail station to get the hotel with all our luggage last night. Mic and I have had to be resourceful to get from the train stations to the hotels. It is important to stay out of the way of bikes. They have their own paths and get really upset when luggage toting Americans gets in their way. Sometimes we take busses, cabs or we walk. It normally requires asking 3 people to find our way. My job is to look for the person most likely to speak English.

I’ll make sure that I get a lot of pictures today. The gig is at the Gronau rock ‘n’popmuseum. I think you can look it up at http://www.rock-popmuseum.de/

Why do you let society drag you so far away from your true nature? All your little doo-dads and ipod

Why do you let society drag you so far away from your true nature? All your little doo-dads and ipods and tv’s are only slowly prying you out of mother natures grip. You are becoming disconnected with the Earth and all the Universe has to offer our brilliant souls. Cut loose. Who needs all those posessions? All those expensive items that you can’t use without a wall plug to charge it up? Wake up, my zombie masses. See what you have to gain in a random conversation with a stranger. I got criticized a lot when I skipped out of Asheville. For what? For listening to the call of the Universe and dropping my things and taking only what I could carry on my back. For wanting to see what was on the other side of this landmass, and everything in between. For balancing out my soul and experiencing love-filled energy flowing into and through me by simple interaction with aware strangers and comunicating with Gia and the elements of this world. You can be angry with me all you wish, but it just shows off your own ignorance and anxiety. You mean I may not be able to contact anyone for months? oh no! you mean I wont be able to pop a CD into my stereo so I can listen to someone else’s over sold music in order to calm down my anxiety instead of meditating on it and balancing out naturally? Dear goodness! that’s completely unacceptable! Just let go. Please. See what this world throws at you.

My life isnt so hard now, like some of you assume. Hell, I ate 3 full healthy meals yesterday free: Breakfast- Eggs, bacon, toast and orange juice (i cooked it myself) Lunch- homegrown/homemade vegetable soup, bread, and oranges. Dinner- Deep fried turkey, greens, potatoe soup, sweet potato pie, bread. This is aside from the 5 slices of pizza Leonardos gave us after dark and the random snack food we munched on all day. See, I’m far from starving. Im living a life of luxury in my eyes. Not to mention, the weather here in Florida is mid 80’s during the day and 60’s at night. And rain? What rain. Ha, even if it DID rain, we sleep on this sidewalk with a roof over it, so we’re all set. I just got doen drinking coffee and watching the news and eating dounut holes. And now im checking my mail on a laptop. See, you don’t need money and cool stuff to live comfortably. Step out of that mindset. Set yourself FREEEEEEEEEEEEEE Please? at least think about it. And stop criticizing me for my lifestyle, when you know nothing about it. I have reconnected myself with nature and my universe, and if that scares you, then all hope is lost for you.

Should I even start discussing all the secret messed up things going on in FEMA right now? Hm, no I think that might be to much at this time =) haha. I love you all.

As always, we are delighted when a reader offers a concrete suggestion as to how to improve the airline mess. Here is a terrific example from Mr. Bob Schaeneman.

I have a suggestion to save all of our financially strapped airlines. I suggest that they all raise the price of soft drinks and water to $10 each, the price of movies to $25, the price of food to $50 per tray, the price of having a ticket agent wait on them to $100 and the price of their first piece of luggage to $200 (which by the way only encourages people to carry gargantuan bags onto the planes and try to cram them all into the overhead bins; pretty smart, huh?) They could also put coin slots on the display monitors to check for departures and arrivals, say $1.00 each viewing. And maybe another fee to use one of the chairs at the terminal gate, say $5.00 per hour? Then, once they have jacked up the prices of all the incidentals, the ticket itself could actually be given to the customer free of charge!!! Seems like an idea that might appeal to the airline marketing wizards, doesn’t it??? Feel free to pass these suggestions along to all the folks who are so rapidly ruining what little positive image they have left.

I can hardly wait for all of the airlines to begin asking the government to bail them out because business has dropped off so much, never realizing that they actually ruined their own companies by “nickel and diming” their customers to death.

Now seriously, how did it not occur to the airlines to simply raise the price of each ticket $50 or $100 bucks, with an explanation that the increase was for additional fuel charges (which we all could have easily understood and related to), leaving soft drinks, water, baggage and movies free??? Of course, that wouldn’t have contributed to the airlines lousy image, which they seem so skillful at creating.

We walked to the train station to reserve our ride to Stockholm tomorrow and then went trippin. The buildings and streets shown were along the way. We stopped at the Moose Head Bar and Restaurant and had the drinks shown. Mine had mashed melon and Brazilian rum. There was a ferris wheel in one of the squares and the sun came out. We traveled to the gig on the bus and after the sound check had dinner. It consisted of curry chicken and salad. The marshmallow dessert shown did not appear edible, so we didn’t indulge. Yes, the picture of the stickers is upside down, but I thought it looked better that way. Hopefully we can get online in Stockholm. Mic’s pic’s will be next.~ Julia

We stayed at the Marriott in Hamburg and it was one of the nicest hotels we stayed in so far. They had a nice indoor pool, hot tub, and sauna. Online fees were crazy, so I wasn’t online for several days. We took a walk downtown where they were preparing the streets for Christmas. We did a little shopping and had a great mocha at an outdoor cafe. We had a little sushi snack at the Marriott. Here’s Hamburg.

(another post inspired by another blogger… vegan activist asked about my other bike trailer, w

(another post inspired by another blogger… vegan activist asked about my other bike trailer, which i mentioned in a recent post where i showed off the new one we got for taking the puppy on road trips, so here’s way more than anyone ever really wanted to know about it!)

this is my bike trailer, full of groceries and resting on its lower edge:

here’s another view, now resting on its hitch:

(as an aside, i must say that the hardest part of this post is showing y’all pics of my groceries, cuz i’m the sort of asshole who judges people based on what food they buy so i tend to expect the same from others… actually, that would be a really good sort of behavioural-modification exercise for me, if i posted photos of all my groceries… not so exciting for the viewer, but a chance for me to get the fuck over my issues)

i bought this trailer for $50 at a consignment shop seven years ago. the guy was asking $65, i asked if they had a student discount, and he said he’d give it to me for the lower price if i paid cash. done! since then, it has been used for countless food not bombs servings, dumpster diving missions, and house moves. it has carried individual large humans in a completely sketchy sort of way, and on several occasions, one or two small ones, nicely secured and contained.

i love this trailer because it is rugged: as you can probably tell, i almost always store it outdoors, but the only damage is some superficial rust. though it does not fold up like other trailers, it has a narrow profile when sitting upright (see first photo) and can be leaned against a wall. the wheels are quite large, allowing it to easily ascend bumps and curves. i added the metal hooks around the sides and bottom edge, so that multiple bungee cords (or old inner tubes!) can be used to strap in a big load. like all two-wheeled trailers, it has a tendency to flip if one wheel hits a bump, particularly at high speeds when there’s little weight in the trailer, but this can be avoided by careful riding.

the hitch goes around the bike’s seat post. originally, there were just two carriage bolts held on by wing nuts, in front and behind the seat post, but this rattled quite a bit and damaged the metal. i found the kevlar hitch in a random bin at the community bike shop, and replaced the front carriage bolt with the linchpin, simultaneously securing the metal outer ring and the kevlar inner band. i like it because there’s so few parts that there’s very little that can go wrong. also, the long shafts make the trailer very convenient to use as a wheelbarrow or hand cart, because seat post level is around hand level so it’s comfortable to pull/push the trailer to the grocery store like we did this morning.

i don’t like the fact that a child (or dog!) riding in this trailer faces backwards, but at least the solid plastic offers more protection than the tent-style trailers… better for a kid than a puppy. however, there’s nothing to shelter a passenger from wind or rain! with mo being so bloody cold all the time anyway, i think any attempt to get him to ride in this open-style cart would have him hating all bike trailers, which is why we’re happy to have gotten the other one for him.

luckily, he was happy to act as a model for this last pic: as shown above, the molded seats are quite good for holding boxes.

i don’t know if i’d ever take this trailer on a trip, though i’ve seen photos of the same one in the road trip section of a bike book… the cyclist had even strapped a whole extra wheel across the underside of the trailer’s hull! it’s not particularly aerodynamic, and must be packed carefully to avoid having too much weight resting at the lower edge, which causes the hitch to slam up against the bottom of the bike seat. also, it collects water, and requires a cover that can pull tight around the edges and some drainage holes.

however! as an all-purpose, haul-everything, so-worthwhile-it’s-practically-paying-ME-every-time-i-use-it sort of a tool, this is pretty much the best $50 i’ve ever spent.
