Hey, I’m Ogg or Oggles and I’m taking up the role of the Australian/New Zealand correspondent for Travian Champions. Randomgeek said a bit about me earlier in the week and I’ll say a bit more now. I’m a New Zealander and I’ve been playing travian for quite a number of years now. As Randomgeek said earlier I’m a big poster on the AU/NZ forums and I’m the no1 attacker on au2. Some of you will probably already know me especially if you’ve given the au servers visit or were around on com a few years back. If you want to know a bit more about me just add me on skype (oggothus). I’m currently following the au3 endgame and I will be posting some info on last Aux which I played an active role in.

Well a few days ago the Natar’s spawned on the 3rd Australian/New Zealand server au3 after just over 300 days of game time. Note that au3 started as T3 and was upgraded to T3.5 shortly before mid game. FnP were quick off the mark taking 6 WWs in the first day (Cenacad taking 2 of them). Live and °I° also managed to take one in the first few hours.

World Wonder Standings after 24hrs

4 Days later Clarus and Al-caholic both from FnP take a WW as well as Learch and mirson from Insomnia. Although Al-caholic’s WW is 0 popped soon afterwards taking it out of the race for the next wee while. We also see Cenacad leave FnP after a brief 2 day stay and return to his original alliance ~E~. The only WW still unclaimed at -145|200 will probably stay that way as it is isolated from the rest of the server. The current totals are FnP with 6 WWs, Insomnia(°I°) with 3 WWs, ~E~ with 2 WWs and Live with 1. Although I wouldn’t be surprised of more WWs change hands before building plans are released. (This info may be a wee bit out of date as I have not gained access to an au3 account yet )

In an earlier post I linked to a guide for the new features of Travian 3.6 that was posted on the Travian.com forums. Now the same person has written a handy explanation of how the new Trade Routes Features work. Read it here:

This is sure to be a big time-saver during the Endgame phase when players are regularly sending crop to the World Wonder! Gaul players will get the most benefit out of this new feature because they have the fastest merchants.

In my last S6.com update I said that MFD was Brush Monkey looked to be in the lead, but like the other World Wonder that took the lead, it too went crashing down hard, this time by an attack by SL. Here’s the current standings:

The way the standings change so fast on S6.com, sometimes it feels like I’m watching the Speed Server. These guys don’t screw around. Say what you want about SL, but they sure don’t screw around!

This impressive attack above, with a high number of Rams of Teutonic Knights, comes from the biggest player in CWL, and the #5 biggest player overall on the server.

It was followed by two Gaul Hammers that and a Roman Hammer that really messed up the infrastructure in the village…

But it was this massive Teutonic Hammer by the #36 attacker on the Server that took the World Wonder down hard:

Overall it showed that the defense at Brush Monkey’s World Wonder is a little light, but it looks that’s because the defense is being concentrated at Codename’s World Wonder. Several players on S6 have talked about how a lot of defense seems to be focused there, so look for another hard battle there in the future.

You can see that Codename’s World Wonder seems to be the one in the lead, so one can expect a huge battle there soon with the fate ofthr game in the balance. Trinity’s World Wonder is in an alliance all by itself and they must be using 2 sets of plans in order to get its levels so high.

And finally, SL and OZ. One interesting quirk is that some World Wonder that were orginally tagged as SL are now with OZ, but in eneral those alliance are regarded as being part of the same side.

Once again, thanks to Globetrotter for his awesome work in making these graphs. It takes a lot of dedication to do so because you have to record the changes in WW levels and population every day, and he’s been doing them since October 13th. Give this man a round of applause!

Time for a big wrap-up of what’s been happening recently on S6.com. If you’ve need help telling which alliance is which, refer to this post. These events are presented in the chronological order of which they happened, and all of this happened over the past few days.

After you see all of these attacks, don’t be surprised if you find yourself saying “wow”. The sheer number of armies used over the span of the last few days is something you hardly ever see.

Attacks at Codename’s World Wonder:

Recently, the leading World Wonder was held by MFD, and it had reached level 94. The SL Meta-alliance, which is MFD’s biggest rival, launched a few of their massive armies at it to slow it down. I have reports of four big armies that fought a bloody battle there, here are the battle reports followed by a quick analysis:

Those are definitely some gigantic armies, and Lara Croft’s is especially fierce. But MFD must did a very good job defending their World Wonder, and the damage taken by these attacks won’t keep it out of the race. They way they were able to hold off that first army from zeroing their wall is especially impressive, that many rams would normally have no trouble taking out the wall at an average World Wonder. Not being able to bring down the wall definitely cost them, and it limited the damage their other armies could do. Still, it will take some time for Codename to recover. Attacks on Trinity:

SL also did major damage to Trinity’s World Wonder (Trinity is in the alliance ONE*JPF, but seems to be received some assistance from MFD). This one was rocked to its core, here are the battle reports from there. As you’ll be able to see, the defense was much lighter.:

Attacks on Bandrit:

 Taking out Codename’s World Wonder left SL in the lead with Bandrit’s World Wonder in the lead, but it wasn’t there for very long. It managed to get to level 96 before MFD sent a legion of attacks on it. Here’s a complete listing of all of them, including the Lv.96 Natar attack that happened during the middle of MFD’s attack wave:

These attacks set Bandrit down to Lv.82 from Lv.96, and also took out his Earth Wall and damaged some of his other infrastructure.

Attacks on Fire&Ice:

Fire&Ice was the next World Wonder to take the lead. And yes, the “Ice” in Fire&Ice is the same Ice that won S8.com and who I interviewed recently. Man, she has to be one of the most hardcore players I’ve ever seen:

But it’s not just the World Wonder cities where the action is taking place. While all this was going on, an alliance in the Southeast called ONE*OD managed to steal the World Wonder construction plans from one of SL’s players, leaving them unable to build levels on their World Wonder until they can get a set of plans back. As you can see from this report, they clearly weren’t expecting an attack on their plans:

I’m not sure which World Wonder is in the lead right now, but if I had to guess I’d say it’s MFD with Brush Monkey’s World Wonder. Fire&Ice seems to have restarted building though. I’m sure there are still some big armies out there, so this game is still up in the air.

FarmVille – Ett spel som idag har över 50 miljoner spelande människor världen över. Att det blivit så populärt beror främst på att det är en applikation till den världsomfattande communityn Facebook och att den lyckats marknadsföra sig med mycket hjälp av själva spelarna. I sin FB logg kan man välja att visa upp och skryta när man går upp i level, har klarat en viss achievement eller bara visa att man varit väldigt duktig på att hjälpa sina grannar.

Själva spelet då? Ja, FarmVille går alltså ut på att man ska bygga upp och driva sin farm på ett så bra sätt som möjligt – man ska alltså se till att tjäna så mycket “coins” och såklart experience så att man går upp i level. Man plöjer jord, sår och sedan skördar det efter ett visst antal timmar. Sedan kan man välja att designa sin farm genom att bygga hus och dekorera med alla möjliga sorters bonde saker. Skaparna tjänar miljoner på detta spel!

Jag själv har spelat det sedan i juni och på senare tid har det blivit allt fler av mina vänner som börjat spela det och på något vis har jag lyckats tagit första platsen på deras listor. Någonting som självklart motiverar en till att fortsätta spela och hålla den platsen.

Café World – Ett nytt spel ifrån skaparna av ovannämnda FarmVille. Här ska du istället öppna ditt café och istället för att så grönsaker ska du nu laga mat och servera dina rätter till kunderna som kommer förbi. Här gäller det istället att få ett bra rykte i spelet så att man får fler kunder och tjänar ihop pengar snabbare. Likheten med FarmVille är att man även här ska samla på sig experience och pengar för att sedan kunna bygga ut sitt café och bygga dyrare saker så man får fler kunder.

Även här låg jag väldigt bra till och hade förstplatsen i sikte.

Travian – Ett webbläsarbaserat strategispel. När du registrerar dig får du först välja vilken server du vill spela på, därefter ska du välja mellan en av de tre stammar (german, galler eller romare). De tre stammarna har olika styrkor och svagheter och man bör välja utifrån vilken spelstil man vill ha. Alltså hurudvida du vill vara väldigt offensiv och anfalla mycket eller om du hellre vill vara lite tillbakadragen och skydda dina vänner genom att spela defensivt. Man spelar alltså tillsammans med andra spelare och även emot andra spelare. Skapa din egna allians, samla ihop bra spelare och se till att bli störst, starkast och bäst på servern i stort sett. Ett väldigt underhållande och socialt spel där man träffar mycket trevligt (och otrevligt) folk ifrån världen över.

Imperion – Ifrån skaparna av Travian så lanserades nu i höst ett liknande spel. Imperion är liksom Travian ett webbläsarbaserat strategispel, fast i rymden. Istället för att bygga soldater så ska du nu bygga så starka och många rymdskepp som möjligt. Uppgradera dina resursfält, eller i detta fall gruvor, för att tjäna in fler resurser och bilda allianser med andra spelare i olika solsystem. Lite mer invecklat än Travian och självklart en snyggare och nyare design än Travian.

Detta är fyra småspel som jag underhållt mig själv med de senaste månaderna. Man loggar in på datorn ibland, kollar till sina byar/planeter, sänder iväg lite anfall, bygger skepp och loggar ut för att fortsätta med vad man nu höll på med. FarmVille tog bara drygt 50min/dag, egentligen inte alltför mycket. Ibland kanske det tar lite mer tid och en snygg avrunding skulle väl vara att spelet tog totalt 8tim/vecka.

Det som alla dessa spel har gemensamt är att det inte finns någon paus-knapp. De fortsätter hela tiden och likt folk som sätter sina scheman efter tv-tablån har jag räknat ut när jag absolut senast måste sätta mig vid datorn för att skörda mina grönsaker eller servera min mat. Jag vill inte direkt påstå att jag är spelberoende.. Bara det att dessa spel tar mer tid än vad jag egentligen har och därför har jag valt att ta bort samtliga konton på dessa spel.

Förhoppningsvis kommer jag få lite mer tid över till annat, som typ plugg. Trist men jag tror det kan behövas.

There’s a lot of stuff happening in the world of Travian, and to help cover all of it and to make sure I don’t miss out on important things that are happening, I’m adding another writer to the blog, and possibly more in the future.

So,  I’d like to introduce Oggles. Oggles will be this site’s Australian correspondent, and post news and updates from the Australian/Nez Zealand Travian Servers (Travian.com.au). Oggles is an experienced Travian player and is currently the #1 attacker on Server Au2. He’s also a frequent poster on the Australian Travian Forums. Oggles will mainly be blogging about the Australian servers, and keeping an eye on all of them, but I’ve told him that he’s free to write about more general stuff from time to time as well. Look for his first post soon!

It should be fairly easy to tell which of us is writing a post by what we’re writing about, but it also says at the bottom of each post who the author is.

I have bad timing. Server 6 looks like it’s been an entertaining server and a pretty balanced endgame, with several different sides in the running and many possible outcomes. And there’s lots of great info on the forums too. I’ve finally got an account on the server from a player who’s no longer player on it so I can observe (The name of the account is Bounty Hunter – ranked 3772 – feel free to message me in-game and say hi if you’re playing on the server). So I’m excited about finally being able to write about S6.com for this site. Unfortunately, just as I’m about to do a big recap about what’s going on, this happens:

Trio (CWL): CWL-Insane’s account got hacked. We don’t know how long its password has been compromised but that would explain all Perfectly coordinated hits on our WW hammer villages (yes, in the account were google doc links to spreadsheets with all our army sizes and coordinates). Attacks were arriving ONLY against the army villages – no other villages – and were starting to arrive minutes/hours before those hammers were sent out towards a WW.

Yikes. That’s quite an unfortunate development. Now before anyone panics, we should let the Travian Multihunters and Admins do their work and see if they can determine if the account was actually hacked, or if this is all a big misunderstanding. The leaders of the opposing alliances (mainly LoD (Liberty or Death) and MFD (Myth Fun Dino)) have some doubts about whether or not there was actually a hacking taking place. More on that below. All of the attacks are on CWL players, and CWL is part of the SL (Space Lizards) Meta. CWL-Insane is ranked #10 overall on the server.

They say that they were able to discover the account hacking because the password was changed on the account, and the co-player on the account had to contact the original player to get it reset in order to log in.

Six CWL villages that hold endgame armies and that were allegedly just about to launch them are now receiving attacks, which presumably have the goal of destroying the village, and thus the army, before they reach their intended target (NOTE: I’m extrapolating here, it hasn’t been outright said what the total effect of the attacks will be). 

All of the incoming attacks on these CWL villages are coming from the alliance LoD. And only the six villages with the big endgame armies that were allegedly about to launch are being attacked. CWL players have also said that these 6 villages were never attacked before or scouted. Here’s the best recap of the events from a CWL perspective that I could find on the forum: http://forum.travian.com/showpost.php?p=1498091&postcount=158 The initial poster started the thread even before they had realised that all the attacks were coming from LoD.

Hopefully the truth about this will come out. LoD says they did nothing wrong but their leaders are doing an investigation of where they got the information from to see if a player from their alliance acted improperly. Here’s a quote from one of their leaders:

the overall response from LoD leaders was they did not do this, they do not condone this, they would never ask nor authorise this.

I’m stunned with disbelief. Hopefully someone else from his alliance has decided to do so. Not giving the multihunters a chance to get to the bottom of this is takes a away the best chance to clear this up.

Quick update from Server 9 – and then I’ll head back to Server 6.

I posted earlier about how S9.com was shaping up to be a battle between North and South, and now that’s pretty much official as the northern alliances have merged under one name (all the alliance previously known as Lethal are now called Thunder). They’ve now declared war on the Meta-alliance that dominates the south, ONE.

With those two alliances merged together, here’s what the top-50 alliances on S9 look like today. ONE is red , Thunder is blue, and other alliances in the top 50, like JD, RT, RA, X.Y.Z, W.R.X., KISS, TRA, and G.O.I. are green (NOTE: I want to be clear, The green alliances are not all on the same team)

Here are the current Artifact Standings on Server 9 by alliances, after the Thunder/Lethal merge:

Thunder: 5 unique (Rivals Confusion, Titan Boots, Artifact of the Fool, Architects’ Secret, and Eagle Eyes), 11 large, 19 small

I’m looking forward to a long war between ONE and Thunder, but the other alliances that are out there can definitely make an impact on the game as well.

I thought I’d take some time to reply to some reader questions:

Dan: When do you play Travian (i.e. what time of day)? Ever try US speed servers?

I play Travian fairly often throughout the day, so long as it doesn’t interfere with my work and other hobbies. I have a schedule that varies a lot, so I’m not really restricted to a specific time. I’ve never tried the US speed servers, I’ve only ever played on Travian.com. I think I probably will give the US servers a shot sometime in the future, but probably not on the Speed server, because I prefer to play regular speed Travian.

Another reader e-mailed me a while back to ask:

Happymarius (from UKX): Are you planning on making a part regarding Travian records? I know plenty of people that always try to break records, both offence, defense and on raiding

I’ve thought about doing this, it’s something that I’d like to be able to add to this site. It’s something I’m sure a lot of people would find interesting. But, after I thought about it some more, I figured out that it’s not a very practical idea, and that I’d have to be very careful if I tried to implement it.

If I tried to keep track of World Records, for example, I’d find myself quickly overwhelmed. There are over 360 Travian servers in existence. Most of them in languages I don’t speak.

So what if I tried to just keep track of records for the english-language servers? That sounds more doable, but then we run into another problem: Establishing what the record is in the first place. Travian has been around a lot longer than I’ve been playing it, and no records have officially been kept.

And comparing Travian 3.5 records with Travian 3.0 records is apples and oranges anyway. Travian is also a game that goes through changes. Travian 3.6 will be a lot different from Travian 3.5. Travian 4.0, which is coming eventually, will also be very different. And Travian 4.0 probably won’t be the end-all, be-all either. So how do you compare records with one from another?

I’ll keep thinking about it and I’ll try to figure out some type of system that would work, but right now I’m not sure if there’s really a good way to do this.

After the end of S8.com 08-09, I did an interview with Red Queen, also known as “Ice,”  from the winning alliance ap.PTT. Red Queen was a co-played account and Ice was one of the two players on it.

Randomgeek:  You had some previous experience leading a Meta-alliance in Travian before, during the past S6.com. Tell us a little bit about that, and why you decided to do it again.

Ice (RQ): Last server 6 was my first time playing travian, I started the server half way through and knew nothing about travian. I didn’t take over the meta leadership until about a month before endgame. The odds were overwhelming against us but we did the best we could and gave our selves a fighting chance in the end. Although we lost I took it as a learning experience that would hopefully serve me well in the future.

Randomgeek: What were some of the things you learned on that server that helped you win on S8?

Ice (RQ): One lesson I learned was that trust was the foundation of effective cooperation between alliances. On that server I was in a similar position as SBD and LEGO were (on S8.com), with no history of cooperation but the necessity to work together with another quad to eliminate the larger threat.  There were many trust issues and no cooperation.  The server ended prematurely because of this lack of cooperation. This leads to the second lesson learned which is that effective hammer use and maintenance is critical to success.  On S8 I made sure to work closely to work with our apeiron allies and keep all hammers engaged and on track.

Randomgeek: Do you think your alliance was the most organized of the 4 Metas, and did that help make the difference in the end?

Ice (RQ): Prior to endgame phase there was very little organization and coordination between the PTT wings. PTT was not a cohesive alliance but leading up to endgame I reorganized the wings geographically, improved communication (new forums and MMs) and implemented central decision making to give us a better chance for endgame. It was not perfect as there was still some sub-alliances that did their own things mainly due to language barriers.  This new streamlined organization and goal focusing, allowed PTT to work better as a team and take 5 WWs and 5 plans in a coordinated fashion. I did not get to see the inner working of the other alliances so I cannot say we were the most organized. But I can say we were alot better organized than we were two months before endgame.

Randomgeek: Given that your side had a lot of things go your way that were out of your control – One of LEGO’s leaders - CartesianCo – deleting, the Northeast’s internal wars, SBD only grabbing one World Wonder, LEGO only grabbing two sets of plans, and the other side miscalculating how much infrastrucure you had built at the end… Do you think Ap.PTT had the most luck during the endgame of the 3 sides, and did that help make the difference in the end?

Ice (RQ): I dont believe in luck. There is only opportunity matched with preparation. It is true that CartesianCo went inactive but his account was actively played by leadership. (On our side) the original King of Defense left shortly before endgame. LEGO made the strategic decision that they could not defend 4 wonders, this was not a spot of bad luck but something decided by their leadership.  It also helped their decision that Heinz-James successfully convinced LEGO leaders that CartesianCo may have been compromised. This is not luck.  Plans are not given to you they are taken. PTT successfully conquered 5 out of the 6 plans we attempted to obtain.  Success and failure is decided by organization and activity not luck.

As for the NE, again SBD only grabbing one WW according to their own leadership was a strategic decision and even if it was not, their failure could not have been ascribed to bad luck. PTT planned for 5 wonders and conquered 5 wonders, this did not happen by accident.  As for their internal wars, one cannot dismiss faulty diplomacy as bad luck, it is part of the full spectrum of travian. Lastly miscalculation of our remaining infrastructure was not bad luck. We were all working with incomplete information trying to make the best decisions we could. Furthermore, we purposely built extra capacity as part of our strategy of having our WWs bounce back quickly from GW hits. This was not luck this was the plan.

In sum, there were too many smart people on all sides working hard for months, to say that the result was just a matter of luck.  Everything you mentioned is part of the long chain of cause and effect. None of the things you mentioned happen in a vacuum, but happen as a result of an action taken by somebody.

Randomgeek: Some people have said that Ap.PTT couldn’t have possibly lost and had the Endgame won from the start. Personally I disagree, especially as the actual finish was pretty darn close. But what’s your take? Did you feel like you had a large advantage? If so, did that impact your play?

Ice (RQ): ap.PTT’s only advantage was our coordination and cooperation. This is something that SBD and LEGO did not have until the final month of endgame. Our meta only comprised half the server meaning we still had to overcome the other half. If some of our enemies were weaker than they should have been, that is because we weakened them. We played the endgame we wanted. If our enemies cannot say the same, I think that means we did something right.

Randomgeek: How close was the finish, to the best of your knowledge? How close do you think SBD or LEGO was to winning?

Ice (RQ): We know we set LEGO back at least another week according to one of their leaders, Darkseid. They would not have overcome us.  Cassini was the only real threat. To win they needed to delay every ap.ptt wonder ahead of them. After SBD sent out its last hammers, we still believe that both indoing and obviously Obor were ahead of Cassini. Although it was a close race they wold have still needed two super hammers to knock them both out. They didn’t have them and neither did we and that is why Obor won.

Randomgeek: So two more big armies would have made the difference?

Ice (RQ): Yes, but there were only a handful of those size armies to begin with on the server in any case. And at that stage of the server no one expected to see anymore other than Kirsa’s (SBD) legendary and imaginary second hammer. I am sure all sides wished they could have found two more super armies of 250k+ hidden somewhere in their quad.  The largest remaining army was jajoh of apeiron who reportedly had a 200k army left. Both LEGO and SBD said they had no more hammers of the size necessary to change the outcome.

Randomgeek: You mentioned earlier how important proper Hammer use is, so I wanted to ask about the massive attack Ap.PTT arranged on SBD’s sole World Wonder. How did you go about planning that attack, choosing how many armies to use, which ones to use, which ones not to use, etc.?

Ice (RQ): Up until that point apeiron and PTT had not shared their full hammer lists. When it became apparent how well defended Cassini was, both sides agreed that it was time to put all cards on the table. Both sides agreed that the strike would be “make or break” and that we would not be able to do significant damage at that wonder a second time.  Therefore we needed to do as much damage as we possibly could in one strike and we would need to win before Cassini recovered.  Before the strike we had fresh intelligence on the wonder, but given the importance of the strike it we decided to overcompensate by 125%. Before the strikes went out we began faking known SBD hammer players and leaders which resulted in a large decrease in defenses once the attack landed. Our overestimation of defenses plus panicked withdrawals from SBD resulted in what some would call “overkill”.  However, the purpose was to definitively knock Cassini out of the race in one hit and it seems we did that.

On a side note, we had a few hammers attack Cassini without orders just because they knew a large strike was occurring.

Randomgeek: I know that PTT had its own leadership council, when Ap.PTT came together and you started to really share information with each other, what was the leadership arrangement like? How were big decisions made in Ap.PTT?

Ice (RQ): We had a shared skype room with all leaders of PTT and apeiron and other officers.  As issues arose we discussed them and reached a consensus but no official votes were taken.  Thinking back I don’t recall a situation in which we disagreed with each other on how to proceed.

Randomgeek: When you realized that you had finally won, how did it feel for you personally? What did you look back on most fondly?’

Ice (RQ): Personally, a sense of accomplishment and relief. My first instinct was to thank all our world wonder holders and sitters that put in ungodly amounts of time.  The two best moments for me during endgame were having Bofiwar’s (LEGO) hammer capital zero popped after he harassed King of Defense on which I was a sitter. And also the complete destruction of all of Bellhouse’s (LEGO) villages which required the coordination of over 25 players and whose success obviated the need to attack Bellhouse’s strongly defended WW (at that time) and preserved our remaining hammers for Arnold.

Randomgeek: Tell us a little bit about the person behind Ice and what she does when she’s not leading Travian alliances.

Ice (RQ): I am a happily married 28 year old attorney and practice family law. I live in Illinois. I enjoy volunteering in the community and on local political campaigns. I can list a lot more of the hobbies I used to have before travian sapped a lot of my free time, lol. I plan on cutting back the amount of time I play travian but I do plan on returning to help lead another alliance in the future.

Randomgeek: Are you really made of ice?

Ice (RQ): Some say I am but you only see that side of me if you don’t follow orders. :p

But I’m so excited about him coming on board to start writing for this site that I’m going to save that for another post so I can just write all about him and what he’ll be doing on this site. I think that by adding correspondents and more contributors to this site, it can do a lot more coverage of what’s happening around the Travian world.

I’ve also figured out how to add Digg buttons to posts, like I did with my interview with Heinz James (it’s at the bottom if you can’t find it). I’m actually really into Digg.com. Much more than Twitter, which I’m fairly ambivalent about. I’ll only add the button to stories that I actually want Dugg, so expect to see it popping up from time to time.

Travian.pk is Pakistan’s regional server. They have only 1 server running and only 3,034 players. I’m debating how hard I want to stick to my “all English servers” policy because that’s pretty small. Travian is probably just starting there, maybe I should give it some more time to grow there before I bother with coverage of it. (The India servers, which are also pretty new, are a lot more populated). I don’t want to dilute the concept of “Hall of Champions.” Do any readers want to weigh in on this?

This happened earlier with S1.com, so it was less of a surprise when there was an announcement on Travian.com saying that the Natars would be arriving a lot earlier than normal for S7.com.

Travian Champions is proud to make Ap.PTT, the winners of S8.com, the 5th induction into the Hall of Champions. It was an epic battle and the longest endgame I’ve covered yet, and all 3 sides will be remembered for how long and hard they fought. Sorry for the delay on doing the entry.

Before I do the Hall of Champions Induction for Server 8.com, I want to take this chance to look back on how the game ended, because the story of this server’s final hours is one that should go down in the history books. It was a climactic finish and a close one too. (And after this is over, I promise I’ll start writing about S6.com)

Here are the final standings from the server:

You can review how close the standings were when I wrote my last post about S8.com, but let me break it down. Ap.PTT’s leading World Wonder – Obor - was at Lv.98, meaning they just had to queue the last two levels and not get hit again in order to win. But, it had been hit hard by Silent But Deadly and it was stalled just before the finish line. Ap.PTT had several other World Wonders close to winning that were on the move, including Indoing, Dani3x, Klynch, Musi, and Fred Garvin. LEGO was trying to repair a World Wonder on Lv. 97, belonging to Arnold, that had been attacked very hard. And Silent But Deadly only had one World Wonder, but it was building levels at a fast pace over the last few days. The first time Ap.PTT took that Wonder down, it took them 39 armies to do it. They wouldn’t have enough troops for another attack like that if it came to it.

SBD looked at the battlefield and saw a lot of Ap.PTT World Wonders within striking distance of the win. So a grand operation was undertaken to attack all of them, hopefully giving their one World Wonder enough time to complete the win.

So they sent out the last big armies they had, hitting Indoing, Dani3x, Klynch, Musi, and Fred Garvin, slowing each of them enough to put their world wonder into striking distance. But the one World Wonder they didn’t hit was Obor’s.

Because they had hit Obor’s World Wonder recently, and thought that it would need several more days to rebuild, during which their World Wonder would be able to move past it, SBD didn’t think it was worth it to send any attackers to it. Even though it was on Lv.98. But they didn’t realise that Ap.PTT had built extra infrastructure and storage there before their earlier attack, so it was actually in better shape than they thought it was.

Obor’s World Wonder was often thought to be a fake World Wonder, and as Heinz James from Ap.PTT said when I interviewed him, Apeiron managed to pull off a “Non-fake Fake World Wonder Trick”. It was a long time ago, but at the start of the Endgame, Obor’s World Wonder changed hands 5 times. Apeiron was late in taking it at the start of the Endgame, then LEGO took it, then Apeiron took it back but it had been reduced to zero population. A lot of people thought it would never come back from that, and no one would have predicted it to be the winner after a start like that. (You have to respect to Obor and his sitters for never giving up on it).

And because it was already on Lv.98, by the time they realised their mistake, it was too late for SBD or LEGO to do anything about it. Like I said in my earlier post, “Living Dangerously“, when a World Wonder is on Lv.98, there’s no room for error when a World Wonder is only 2 levels away from being done, because you can queue the last two levels at the same time. By the time someone on Lv.98 has started building the final two levels of the World Wonder, it’s too late to do anything about it.

SBD was running light on big armies, and LEGO was pretty much tapped out too. But if they had been hit Obor’s World Wonder a little bit harder, the game would have gone on and someone else’s World Wonder would have won. So it goes to show how making the wrong guess of where your enemy is at can have a dramatic effect on the endgame.

There are varying opinions on what would have happened if Obor’s World Wonder had been hit again. Of course, that would have required at least one more big army on SBD’s or LEGO’s side, because the defense at Obor’s village was stacked quite high.

There was an operation in place to attacks Obor’s villages so he couldn’t hold a plan, but the attacks didn’t have enough time to hit. Who knows if the operation would have actually succeeded or not if the attacks had enough time to hit? (I’ve heard from Ap.PTT leaders that they would have been ready for it, Obor’s plans were moved to somewhere safe after the build order for Lv.100 was entered)

I’ve been told by some people that SBD’s World Wonder would have gone on to win if they had been able to stop Obor. Others say that Indoing’s World Wonder wasn’t damaged enough from SBD’s attacks and that it would have been ahead of Cassini’s. I don’t know for sure and a lot of the people who say these things don’t know for sure either, so in the end I guess all you can say is that it was a close finish and Ap.PTT won it just before it possibly slipped out of their hands.

Ap.PTT leaders were definitely not looking forward to doing another assault on SBD’s World Wonder. They used 39 armies the first time, and it still managed to almost come back and get the win. Even those who thought they could have slowed down SBD’s World Wonder enough for Indoing or another Wonder to finish ahead of it didn’t think they’d be able to do it by much. It came down to SBD and LEGO being a just few armies short. It was definitely a close finish.

There was some talk on the forums about how Ap.PTT were too big for the other alliances to stand a chance, and that the Server was going to have a boring ending. In the end, it was proven that that wasn’t the case. LEGO and SBD both came very close, and if some things had gone their way, either one of those could have ended up as the winner. The endgame took a little while to get interesting, but LEGO made a brilliant move to force Ap.PTT to break the Non-Aggression Pact with SBD by taking out the

LEGO’s leaders used their armies very effectively and in a future server, if they can bring a few more hammers and keep all their top players until the end, they definitely have a great chance of winning. I hope they come back for the next S8.

In the end, Ap.PTT didn’t win because they were the biggest. They won because they were the best. I’m not going to say the battlefield was even. I also think that there were some things that went in Ap.PTT’s favour that were beyond their control. But there’s a big difference between having an advantage and being unbeatable. Ap.PTT had to work hard to beat two very skilled and deadly foes, and the close ending shows it.

I’m going to finish the Hall of Champions entry for S8.com now. And then post my interview with Red Queen from PTT (also known as Ice). That seems like a fitting way to wrap up the coverage of S8 and to segue into S6. There’s a lot more I could write about, and I regret that I don’t have the time to get to it. Like any epic war, there are stories that will be untold.
