Today is the first day of December and whilst the mere thought of Christmas this year breaks my heart there is no avoiding it.

So here as an early token gesture is Herbie Hancock with a cover of the Joni Mitchell classic “River” with Corinne Bailey Rae as the guest vocalist’.

“River” – Herbie Hancock with Corinne Bailey Rae

It’s coming on Christmas
They’re cutting down trees
They’re putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
But it don’t snow here
It stays pretty green
I’m going to make a lot of money
Then I’m going to quit this crazy scene
I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I made my baby cry

He tried hard to help me
You know, he put me at ease
And he loved me so naughty
Made me weak in the knees
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I’m so hard to handle
I’m selfish and I’m sad
Now I’ve gone and lost the best baby
That I ever had
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I made my baby say goodbye

It’s coming on Christmas
They’re cutting down trees
They’re putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
I wish I had a river
I could skate away on

On paper, River sounds like a match made in several versions of heaven. Legendary pianist Herbie Hancock re-imagines Joni Mitchell with his hand-picked, star-studded band–including saxophonist Wayne Shorter–in tow. Luminary guests lend vocals to a song apiece: Norah Jones (“Court and Spark”), Tina Turner (“Edith and the Kingpin”), Corinne Bailey Rae (“River”), Luciana Souza (“Amelia”), Leonard Cohen (with an unsettlingly sanguine version of “The Jungle Line”), even Mitchell herself (“Tea Leaf Prophecy”). In the event, though, a few fundamental elements go awry. Hancock plays with almost saccharine understatement throughout, and even Shorter’s seminal “Nefertiti” and Duke Ellington’s “Solitude” fall into the album’s presiding, somnolent surface, though to a lesser degree does the instrumental version of Mitchell’s “Sweet Bird.” But girding, and in some measure, saving, the proceedings, the lyrics here testify to a subtler wisdom guiding Hancock’s set list. The mix includes a continuum from intrepid classics to dusty, fans-only fare, but a distinct reverence for Joni Mitchell the Poet threads them together, and, in the end, this album works best as a sleepy window into one fan’s giddy and particular love affair with his source material. Fans of Hancock win out. –Jason Kirk

A great Advent hymn by Philip Doddridge. Oddly, I don’t even know the tune to this one. I found the words 5 years ago or so, put my own music to them with my guitar, and have been singing it every Advent since. I’ll blog a bit about the third verse in the coming days.

Hark the glad sound! The Saviour comes,
The Saviour promised long;
Let every heart prepare a throne,
And every voice a song.

He comes the prisoners to release,
In Satan’s bondage held;
The gates of brass before Him burst,
The iron fetters yield.

He comes from thickest films of vice
To clear the mental ray,
And on the eyes oppressed with night
To pour celestial day.

He comes the broken heart to bind,
The bleeding soul to cure;
And with the treasures of His grace
To enrich the humble poor.

Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim
And heav’n’s eternal arches ring
With Thy beloved name.

So usually, I reserve the Coming Attractions section for movies, but like Ron Burgundy, this is “sort of a big deal”. Its no secret that Bad Rabbits are one of my favorite bands; their live performance is insane, they have a fresh new sound, and they are all actually really cool peoples.

Well, tomorrow debuts their first major record (although its not on a “major record label”), and I’m telling you right now they will blow up VERY soon. JC was able to pull some strings and get an advanced copy of their CD, so trust that we know what we’re talking about. Along with their new style of music, dubbed “New Crack Swing” you will get some awesome MJ tributes sprinkled throughout the CD. PLUS a feature from Travis of Gym Class Heroes. Now, I understand some people will watch that video and be turned off by the word “pop” but in reality, this isn’t your little sister’s “pop” music. This “pop” is new, energetic, aggressive, and meant to be consumed with alcohol.

In reality, there is no such thing as “music for the masses” because most people take pride in the idea that their favorite genre is enjoyed by few. Music is all about identity, individuality, and pure enjoyment. With that said, Bad Rabbits absolutely crosses boundaries and could genuinely be enjoyed by people from all walks of life. What other bands do you know that could seamlessly incorporate true to life covers of both Michael Jackson and Rage Against the Machine into their live performance without second thought from the audience?! I only know one… and you should pick up their new album “Stick Up Kids” as soon as possible!

Grasshopper Manufacture’s No More Heroes is one of those rare Wii titles that transcends the shovelware stereotype and delivers something fresh, challenging and down-right weird.

Carving out a niche as something of a Quentin Tarantino of game development, Suda 51 is no stranger to pushing the boundaries of mature gaming, creating games full of violence, expletives and sexual suggestion. His latest, No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle blurs the lines of bad taste even further according to age-classification body ESRB. Read on to find out why…

The report can be found on the ESRB website and gives a brief insight into the warped madness gamers can expect from Travis, Shinobu and company when the game lands January 28th.

But to save you time I’ve also posted the full assessment below, as first reported by the great team at VG247.

Here’s a snippet. Try to read on and keep a straight face. Go on, I dare you!

“Cutscenes depict more dismemberment: assassins slicing each other into several pieces in slow-motion, enemies pulling their own heads off, characters displaying trophy-heads on silver platters. These over-the-top depictions of violence account for the Mature rating; they also account for the Intense Violence and Blood and Gore descriptors. The language is strong, too, as characters sometimes use the phrases “f**king a*shole,” “f**khead,” and “You gotta be sh**tin’ me!”

Wow…

Also, here’s a game trailer in case you haven’t seen it yet. Be warned, it’s rather awesome!

The ESRB report:

Players assume the role of Travis, an anime-watching assassin who fights his way through the ranks to become the number-one assassin. Being an assassin means using a retractable katana blade (i.e., a laser sword); it means slicing, chopping, and dismembering human enemies to death in this highly-stylized (somewhat “cartoony”), cell-shaded action game. The depictions of violence in the game are intense, yet somewhat exaggerated: men in black suits are sliced in-half as blood and money flow from their bodies; an assassin with a boombox does not recover after his lower torso has been chopped off—after blood shoots from his empty waist like a geyser; and two women (clad in bikinis) get suspended in mid-air, get caught between the flashing lights, lasers, and frenetic sword swipes of an assassins’ duel—the women’s heads slide across the floor once the men stop fighting. Cutscenes depict more dismemberment: assassins slicing each other into several pieces in slow-motion, enemies pulling their own heads off, characters displaying trophy-heads on silver platters. These over-the-top depictions of violence account for the Mature rating; they also account for the Intense Violence and Blood and Gore descriptors. The language is strong, too, as characters sometimes use the phrases “f**king a*shole,” “f**khead,” and “You gotta be sh**tin’ me!”

The game contains sexual overtones and partial nudity. Players can watch portions of an anime show called Bizarre Jelly; the opening credits depict a female character whose clothes suddenly disappear, revealing her bare buttocks (one-to-two seconds). Game dialogue contains sexual references, including the phrases “dirty nympho,” “the one that’s throbbing,” and “I feel like that pervy teacher in a porn.” Female assassins are depicted in low-cut tops, thongs, short schoolgirl uniforms, and fishnet bondage-style outfits; breasts and buttocks jiggle, and the camera often lingers (there is no equivalent physics applied to male body parts). A couple of cutscenes contain strong sexual innuendo: when characters enter a store, a surprised clerk struggles with his belt buckle and zips up his pants (e.g., “I was just. Uh, doing inventory.”); a woman moves a katana blade in front of a man’s groin, kneels down, and kisses it (the blade), causing the retractable laser to extend. The battery meter for Travis’s sword is always represented by a cartoon-like penis icon in the upper-right corner of the screen: as battery power runs out, the icon starts to shrink—a sad face appears.

“Here Comes My Girl”

November 25th, 2009

Thanksgiving is a holiday about family, which when deployed in television does one of three things. The first is to emphasize the cohesiveness of a particular group of characters who work seamlessly when brought into the same setting. The second is to emphasize the sheer chaos that results from the show’s personalities coming together, to either comic or dramatic purposes. The third, meanwhile, is to demonstrate that the show is a convoluted mess where bringing the characters together is a futile exercise that will fail to provide interesting television.

What’s helpful for ABC’s 9pm comedies is that both of them have built their identity around the idea of family, to the point where bringing the gang together is like second nature to the two shows. Cougar Town has really started to charm me as of late, and “Here Comes My Girl” is yet another fine episode that brings together this group of individuals into a family of sorts that’s just an enormous amount of fun to watch bounce off of each other. And “Fizbo” is perhaps my favourite Modern Family episode yet, taking advantage of the chaos at the heart of this family and bringing things to a satisfying (and also sort of sweet) conclusion.

It made for a really comforting hour of television comedy, which is what the timeslot has been providing (on average) all season.

Perhaps the strongest individual element of the episodes were the show’s fully taking advantage of the strengths of a pair of supporting characters, in this instance Dan Byrd’s Travis and Eric Stonestreet’s Cameron. The two characters have been strong overall, but this episode allowed them to take things to another level. With Travis, this means going beyond his sarcasm and awkwardness to the heart of his relationship with his mother, resulting in Jules losing her sense of self-control and failing miserably at being anything close to “cool.” The result is a really honest, but funny, story of a son coming to terms with the role his mother will play in his adult life, and while it had its broader comic moments (the balloon gag) and its quippy one-liners (the rolling pin would make me feel self-conscious too) it was more about that moment at episode’s end (set to, thanks to the sleuthing skills of Mrs. Sepinwall, Noah and the Whale’s “Give a Little Love,”) where Jules and Travis share a quiet moment preparing Thanksgiving dinner. It was a wonderful piece of acting from Cox and Byrd, and totally sells that Travis is more well-adjusted than Jules but is nonetheless believably awkward. It was a heartfelt and funny little story that really sold me on the relationship.

As for the genius of Fizbo, I don’t really know where to start. Stonestreet’s Cameron has become the show’s breakout character: while Ty Burrell’s Phil stole the pilot (Lion King moment notwithstanding, even, I’d argue), Cameron has been able to show more dimensions and has a slightly better foil in Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Mitchell. Fizbo was a stroke of genius because of both the sheer commitment of Stonestreet and some legitimately amazing directing choices. Look at the dramatic angles the show uses to introduce the character as Cameron puts on the nose/eye makeup, or the amazing shot of Fizbo’s foot stepping out of the car when Mitchell’s about to get attacked at the gas station. The show worked to create the legend of Fizbo, and while Stonestreet was nailing the smaller moments (like the “something”/”nothing” gag with Jay) the direction was establishing just how epic this ass-kicking, balloon-animal machine really is. It didn’t have the emotion of Cougar Town’s storyline, but it didn’t have to: who needs sentiment when you have legend?

Cougar Town was less interested in creating such a huge sense of destiny, but I thought the comic rhythms the show has established in recent weeks were working in overdrive: there were a number of fantastic scenes with Ellie and Laurie playing off of one another, the dynamic between the three men was as strong as it always is, and both broader scenes (the “Hi Kylie” song and the basketball games) were executed to their full effect. I also like that they came right out and pointed out that both Bobby and Grayson are at the point in their lives where Jules is the perfect woman for them, and that they used this for both comic and dramatic effect. There was a joke to be had in Grayson’s suggestion of buying it deep inside and avoiding it, but it’s also kind of true, and the characters have a strong enough dynamic for me to buy things going slowly. Some shows I’d wish that they’d get the usual storylines out of the way, but I’m so enjoying just hanging out with this family that a Thanksgiving dinner can simply hint at some things before just being about spending time together.

And perhaps the best thing about “Fizbo” was that this same theme wasn’t hammered into our heads. The conclusion did end on a note that Luke got a great birthday after all, one where he (and not the holiday) was the center of attention and where the whole family came together, but it came to be through a series of hilarious circumstances. After complaining about V’s in media res opening this week, it was great to see one where the views into the hospital scene made us on alert for potential maladies, and the result was a lot of brilliant comic tension as you had both legitimate threats (the scorpion, Dylan’s mayo allergy, the crossbow) and hilarious phobias (Phil’s fear of clowns, which was a great piece of acting from Ty Burrell) pulling us in various different directions. When things eventually go terribly wrong, with Manny becoming the great hero (“My dog’s still in there” was a cute touch) only to have Luke end up breaking his arm after slipping on Claire’s “comb sheaves” beads was the sort of wonderfully fitting climax that the show should do more often. The show earned that scene in the hospital in a way that previous episodes haven’t earned their tidy endings, and the result was a really great half-hour of television.

Overall, two families I’d be glad to have Thanksgiving dinner with, so long as there’s no crossbows involved and Fizbo is invited.

Cultural Observations

Want to take this chance to wish all of my American readers a Happy Thanksgiving – sure, it’s not as good as the real CANADIAN Thanksgiving, but I hear it’s still a pretty big deal and all that jazz.

There were a number of great Fizbo sight gags, but I think the battle for me is the post-badass novelty clock pullout and the running away from the scorpion like a small child. So different, and so amazing.

Although there were a few too many Michael Scott style “Make joke and mug to camera” moments for Phil in this one, I liked that the show continued last week’s trend of Phil making fun of Claire as opposed to vice-versa.

Andy’s “I’ve got a secret” heartburn was a fun bit of comedy from Ian Gomez, and Christa Miller is as lovely as always in twisting the knife.

My one question from the show: while Bill Lawrence’s usual signature touches (the use of music, the oddball comedy, the physical comedy, etc.) are all in place along with a sense of sweetness that the show was lacking in the pilot, I do wonder if the show is interested in investigating actual sadness or tragedy at all. Scrubs, as a medical show was forced to confront it, but these characters are relating to the point where something happening to a distant relative could be played emotionally, but it definitely feels more resistant than Scrubs (or, for that matter, Spin City) to the idea. Just a thought.

In general, October, like I’ve said before, was crazy and busy, and so much fun. The majority of this month has balanced it out with a lot of studying, but that isn’t to say I’m not having fun either! Anyway, that’s for another post.

Release: ROCK ‘N’ ROLL
Date: 2009
Style: Rock
Home: Alberta
Chatham Connection: Travis Nesbitt (vocals) was born and raised in Chatham Ontario Canada.

Band Members:
Travis Nesbitt – Vocals
Logan Jacobs – Bass
Ben Shillabeer – Drums
Morgan Gies – Guitar

Official band note: During the “freezing cold of an Edmonton winter” with producer John Travis, who made a name for himself working with such heavyweights as Kid Rock, Buckcherry and Sugar Ray. It strips away the pop punk and radio flavour-of-the-day tracks that Social Code had been known for, and delivers the red meat of the music. From the gloriously grinding and noisy first single Satisfied and the catchy as all hell Buy Buy Baby to the heavy, boogie rocker Fight For Love and the surefire heartbreak, prairie rock anthem I’m Not OK, the 10 tracks draw on influences as seminal as Springsteen, Zeppelin, The Stones, Cheap Trick and The Black Crowes while being entirely true to the band’s own sound.

The band will be playing Chatham Sunday Nov.22 2009 at Encore.

Note: I have been lucky enough to share shows with Social Code a few times and I can tell you that they are a great bunch of guys who are appreciative of the scene. Usually headliners get cocky and fill the stage with gear leaving opening bands with little room to do anything. When playing with these guys, they offered to share drum kits and do whatever possible to make it easiest for all bands to get a fair shake in stage show and ease of transitions. These guys deserve your support and it is nice to see that they have maintained their Canadian courtesy & politeness despite such a jaded world they travel upon. I am not a band ass kisser by any means, these guys have worked hard and do it the right way. S. Beaulieu

This band is from Scotland, and its main genre is alternative rock (basically it means punk rock, from my understanding). Fran Healy is its leader singer. Their other famous songs include: Sing, and Re-Offender, Closer. Anyway, I’d like to get all of their albums. They should be as good as coldplay.

Lyrics:

When I first held you I was cold
A melting snowman I was told
But there was no-one there to hold before
I swore that I would be alone for ever more
Wow look at you now
Flowers in the window
It’s such a lovely day
And I’m glad you feel the same
Cause to stand up, out in the crowd
You are one in a million
And I love you so
Lets watch the flowers grow

There is no reason to feel bad
But there are many seasons to feel glad, sad, mad
It’s just a bunch of feelings that we have to hold
But I am here to help you with the load

Wow look at you now
Flowers in the window
It’s such a lovely day
And I’m glad you feel the same
Cause to stand up, out in the crowd
You are one in a million
And I love you so
Lets watch the flowers grow

So now we’re here and now is fine
So far away from there and there is time, time, time
To plant new seeds and watch them grow
So there’ll be flowers in the window when we go

Wow look at us now
Flowers in the window
It’s such a lovely day
And I’m glad you feel the same
Cause to stand up, out in the crowd
You are one in a million,
And I love you so
Lets watch the flowers grow
Wow look at you now
Flowers in the window
Its such a lovely day
And I’m glad you feel the same
Cause to stand up, out in the crowd
You are one in a million
And I love you so

The Boy with No Name is the fifth studio album by Scottish Indie pop band Travis. The album was released on 7 May 2007 in the United Kingdom and on 8 May 2007 in the United States.

The name of the album came about when lead singer Fran Healy and his partner Nora were deciding on a name for their newly born son. During this time, he sent a photo of his son to friend by email and labeled the photo “The Boy with No Name”. Healy revealed this on the The Chris Moyles Show during an interview. Healy has also revealed in pre-album release performances that some tracks are influenced by his developing family status, such as “My Eyes” being about his new son or “Battleships” referring to ups and downs of relationships.

Yesterday, I sent an email to the Friends of Charla Nash, asking what can be done to convince the Cleveland Clinic that a blind person requires hands to be most efficient in becoming as independent as possible. I received the following response — it’s an excerpt, but I made no changes to the text below. Please, please, take the time to write and/or call, and please be *polite, persuasive, and calm. (Yes, I know that’s rich coming from me, but one must choose one’s approach.)
Here is the info, and then I will offer some tips for your letter and/or call. I am also going to look into putting together a petition at thepetitionsite.com, if it hasn’t been done already.

***

Hello Christine, thank for your support.

I think the Cleveland Clinic needs to have more information.

If your organization could write to the CEO and explain that

a blind person has a greater need for hands.

The CEO is Dr. Toby Cosgrove.

9500 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44195 | 800.223.2273

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

***

IMPORTANT! — Dr. “Toby” Cosgrove’s given name is Delos; I used Delos in my letter, regardless of the fact that he is referred to as Toby all over the Cleveland Clinic site. I will be posting the Clinic’s Social Media Policy here in a bit, as well as the letter I intend to send. If I make any changes to the final letter, I will update that post. The Cleveland Clinic site gave a “mail code” for Dr. Cosgrove of H18. I’ve never seen or used mail codes before; the letter probably is routed faster that way, so put it on your envelope.
I tried e-mailing on the site, but my letter was too long. His number on the site is listed as (216) 444-2300. Please use this with discretion, folks. We’re trying to gain something for Charlie, rather than use this as an opportunity to bully and chew out doctors, CEO’s, the health care system, etc.)

Tips for social media sites, letters to the press, e-mail, snail mail, phone calls, recruitment of others to the cause . . .

1. Emphasize that with the many emotional and other challenges Charlie must face, it is unfair to saddle her with a handicap which they can remove if they decide to do so.
2. State that by not giving her hands, they are making it more difficult for her to gain the most rudimentary independence: feeding, toileting, bathing, dressing, accessing computer technology, traveling with a white cane or service animal, etc.
3. In addition to charlie herself gaining more independence and living as rich and full a life as possible, discuss the impact upon her family, particularly her daughter, Briana, as well as the inspiration that can be fostered if she is able to use her hands to defy the expectations misinformed and cynical health professionals and the public in general often have.

4. Charlie Nash is still a relatively young woman. She has spunk, spirit, humor, and a will to live that few under the same circumstances could match. If anyone is a candidate for any and all measures that will elevate her prospects for a higher quality of life, she is that candidate.
5. I do not think anything will be gained by being abrasive, sarcastic, or by playing the sob story card. (The latter is already far overdone by the very circumstances of the situation, and the former will merely alienate the policymakers at the clinic. Trust me, if I thought differently, I would be after them full tilt.)
Our goal is simple: Charlie needs hands, and the therapy to get them to bend to her strong will, the will that will make her even more formidable one day than she already is.
Please feel free to email me if you want any feedback on letters. I would also really appreciate it if people would let me know when they write or call, and what kind of response was received. I would like to track this. No matter how many people write or call, it is better if we keep a repository of outreach and responses to assess our progress.
Let’s do it!

Otherwise this much awesome wouldn’t be possible on the planet Earth. Talk show guru Oprah Winfrey defended her decision to reveal the face of chimp attack victim Charla Nash on her show last week, revealing she considered blurring the image but decided against it.

“There was great concern as to how to show the face, whether to show the face, and how to do it,” Oprah shared on friend Gayle King’s Sirius Radio show late last week. “And I finally thought that she has to live with it. First of all, she wanted to show it, and she has to live with it, so how dare us think … because we even considered, ‘Should we blot out the face? Should you blur the face?’ And then i said no, we’re not gonna do that, because it’s more important for us to not have to look at her than for her to be willing to show it? That’s not right.”

Listen to Oprah’s Interview With Gayle:

An admission regarding other subject matter she refused to air helps clarify some of the ethical issues concerning censorship in daytime television. “I have done shows – just recently actually – I did a show where at the end of the show I felt people should not see this, this should not happen,” Oprah told King regarding an interview with a sex addicted mother.

“On the show, the mother told me she had 3 children – a 10-year-old, a 14-year-old, and a 17-year-old – and she’s talking about all these crazy explicit things she was doing. We finished taping the show and I said to the producer, ‘We’re gonna ruin her life if we put that on the air, so that is not going to air.’ She was saying, ‘I wanna go on.’ I said, ‘You don’t know what this is gonna do to your 10 year old son. This is going to ruin his life having you on television talking about these things.’”

That marks the second time in a year that Winfrey pulled an already-taped episode of her show.

In April, Winfrey nixed ‘10 Years Later: The Truth About Columbine,’ which was to air on the anniversary of the massacre in Littleton, Colo., that killed 12 students and a teacher.

“I decided to pull the Columbine show today. After reviewing it, I thought it focused too much on the killers. Today, hold a thought for the Columbine community. This is a hard day for them,” Winfrey wrote on Oprah.com, Facebook and Twitter.

Despite the media firestorm involving the Nash attack, The Oprah Winfrey show did not garner huge rating gains with the Nash interview. The New York Post reported that “preliminary ratings for Wednesday’s ‘Oprah’ averaged only about 6 percent over the day before — and were lower than what she got on Monday when Ellen DeGeneres and Portia DeRossi were on talking about their recent marriage.”
