Stefan Teplan und Björn Klauer auf Trekking-Tour durch die arktische Eiswüste: Weiße Wildnis statt grauer Mauern. 50 Huskys statt 100 PS.

Unterwegs in weißer Weite.

Remember those German cheeseburgers-in-a-can? The ones that were rumored to be extremely nasty? Well, the one in my living room expired a week ago, which naturally meant that it had to be eaten. Here’s a summary in ten pictures. Conclusions follow.

Curiosity killed the cat.

Our incredible volunteer popping it open. Everyone gasped. We crowded around. Nothing spewed out screaming like in Ghostbusters.

Popped open the other side and shucked it out. Dry bread! Someone said his hands now smelled like meat. Someone else said they smelled like poo. Someone had better have been wrong.

No campfire, so into the microwave it went! My. God.

I shuddered at this point. (Click the photos to expand!)

No ketchup or other condiments were added, in order not to taint the subtle flavors carefully engineered using the best in German technology.

Chompin' down. He did his best.

Our excellent volunteer with a steel stomach concluded a few points about this thing:

1. It’s better than Quick.
2. The meat actually tasted like meat.
3. The meat also tasted like paper.
4. The “cheese” had plenty of something awful.
5. If you were stuck in the woods somewhere and had this canned burger, you could eat it without dying.

So there you go. Not good at all, but in the end, you could do worse. Three cheers for German innovation!

Brrauah.

Boah, was eine Sauerei.

MOUNTAIN EXPEDITIONS – MOUNTAINEERING IN NEPAL with Mountain Sherpa Trekking and Expeditions, Sherpa Guides Company.

Mountaineering is considered the keystone activity that Nepal offers to the climbers than any country in the world. The eight out of the fourteen 8000m peaks lie in Nepal including Mt. Everest (8000m), the highest peak in the world. Ever since, the country opened its peaks to climbers in 1949, the mountaineering activity has become the most popular trend of alluring thousands of adventures seekers to Nepal every Year. The pioneer of all, this Mountaineering was the major starter of tourism in Nepal that dates back to the Successful conquering of mount Annapurna by Mourice Herzog in 1950 and the Mt. Everest by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953. Since then, the record Setting and glory hunt of conquering these peaks have been remarked as the most prestigious earnings and so has been the ultimate dream of any climber to attain. Mountaineering in Nepal is also considered dangerous and life threatening due to the unprecedented Climatic Change and other hazards led by high altitudes. So, If you join any expedition with Mountain Sherpa Trekking & Expedition, our highly experience Sherpa Climber will give you fully safety instructions before the Expedition began. This is very important to minimize the risk of unprecedented climate Change. The Nepal Himalaya has also remained as an inspiration from ages for people from every walk of lives varying from poets to researchers, climbers to trekkers, philosophers to saints and nature Lovers to adventures.

MT.EVEREST EXPEDITION

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world measuring 8,848m (29,028 feet) in height. It was first climbed on May 29, 1953 by a New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal. Mount Everest is also known by the Tibetan name Chomolangma (goddess mother of the snows), and by the Nepali name Sagarmatha (Mother of the Universe).
Everest had been attempted many times before the important expeditions being that of 1922, 1923 and 1924.The body of George H.L. Mallory who died in an earlier attempt (1924), was discovered on the mountain in 1999. More than 600 climbers from 20 countries have climbed the summit by various routes from both north and south. Climbers’ ages have ranged from nineteen years to sixty. Climbing on Everest is very strictly regulated by both the Nepalese and Chinese governments. Climbing Everest and Treks to Everest Base Camp are becoming increasingly popular on both the north and south sides of the mountain. On the north side, a Buddhist monastery is one of two whose locations were selected specifically to allow religious contemplation of the great peak. The other side is the Thyangboche Monastery in Nepal. The once active Rongbuk monastery in Tibet has required much rejuvenation from the destruction it experienced following China’s invasion of Tibet.

KANCHENJUNGA EXPEDITION

Kanchenjunga (8,586) is the third highest mountain in the world. From 1838 until 1839 was believed to be the highest. It is an enormous mountain-mass and many satellite peaks rise from its narrow icy ridges. It is located on the border of Nepal and Sikkim, just 46 miles northwest of Darjeeling. It is the most easterly of the great 8,000-meter peaks of the Himalaya.
Though not successfully climbed until 1955, it was first attempted in 1905, but four members of that international party were killed in an avalanche. As inspiring as Kanchenjunga’s beauty is at least the first three parties to ascend the mountain never attempted the final few feet to the summit out of voluntary respect or those who considered the summit sacred. The successful British expedition of 1955 set the standard by stopping a few feet short of the actual summit, in honor of the local religion.

LHOTSE EXPEDITION

Lhotse (8,516) is the fourth highest mountain in the world. Its long east-west crest is located immediately south of Mount Everest and the summits of the two mountains are connected by the South Col, a vertical ridge that never drops below 8,000 meters. Lhotse is sometimes mistakenly identified as the south peak of the Everest massif. No serious attention was turned to climbing Lhotse until after Everest had finally been ascended. Lhotse was first climbed in 1956 by two Swiss, fritz Luchsinger and Ernest Reiss.
In addition to the main summit, there are two subsidiary peaks, Lhotse Shar, which is immediately east of the main summit, and Nuptse, a high peak on the mountain’s west ridge.

MAKALU EXPEDITION

Makalu (8,463) is the fifth highest mountain in the world. It is an isolated peak, located just 14 miles east of Mount Everest. Its size alone is impressive, but its structure, that of a perfect pyramid with four sharp ridges, make this mountain all the more spectacular.
It has proved to be a challenging climb, as only five of its first sixteen attempts were successful. Previously, it had been admired and studied by several Everest parties, but like so many other giants in Khumbu region, it was not attempted until the summit of Everest had been attained in 1954. A French group first climbed Makalu in year 1955.
Chomo Lonzo (25,650 ft.) is a subsidiary peak of Makalu, rising just north of the higher summit, separated by a narrow saddle.

CHO OYU EXPEDITION

Cho Oyu (8,201) is the sixth highest mountain in the world, located a short distance to the west from Everest and Lhotse (the fourth highest) in the Khumbu region of Eastern Nepal along the Tibetan border. Its towering peak stands with Everest well above the surrounding mountains. It became a familiar landmark to climbers ascending Everest’s north face. Just west of Cho Oyu is the Nangpa La, a 19,000-foot glacier pass, and the main trade route between the khumbu Sherpas and Tibet. Cho Oyu’s proximity to the Nangpa la has earned it the distinction among some climbers as being the easiest 8,000 meter peak. It was the third such peak climbed, and the first climbed in autumn by two Australian.

DHAULAGIRI EXPEDITION

Dhaulagiri (8,167), whose name means White Mountain, is the seventh highest mountain in the world. It is an enormous Himalayan massif, located in north central Nepal. After its discovery by the western world in 1808, it replaced Ecuador’s Chimborazo (20,561 ft.) as the postulated highest mountain in the world. It maintained this standing for nearly 30 years, until the discovery of Kanchenjunga, which was then falsely believed to be the world’s highest mountain.
Dhaulagiri’s crest stretches for thirty miles, lending structure to an otherwise tangled topography of twisting ridges, glaciers, and ice falls. Along the main crest, several pyramid-shaped peaks rise. Four of these summits, numbered form east to west, rise above 25,000 feet.
In 1960, the Swiss/Australian expedition who first reached the summit did so despite their airplane having crashed during the approach. This was the first Himalayan climb supported by an airplane, although the plane was subsequently abandoned on the mountain.

MANASLU EXPEDITION

Manaslu (8, 163) is the high peak of the Gorkha massif, and is the eight highest mountains in the world. It is located about 40 miles east of Annapurna, the tenth highest mountain. The mountains long ridges and valley glaciers offer feasible approaches from all directions, and it culminates in a peak that towers steeply above its surroundings landscape, and is dominant features when seen from afar. The name Manaslu is derived from the Sanskrit word Manasa and can be roughly translated as mountain of the spirit. An all-female Japanese expedition successfully ascended to the summit, thereby becoming the first women to climb an 8,000-meter peak.

ANNAPURNA EXPEDITION

Annapurna (8,091) is an enormous Himalayan massif, the tenth highest mountain in the world. In 1950, it became the first 8,000 meter mountain to be successfully climbed. It is located east of great gorge cut through the Himalaya by the Kali Gandaki River. The mountain has the glaciers on its western and north western slopes, which drain into this gorge.
Annapurna is a Sanskrit name that can be translated as goddess of harvests or more simply the provider. Of Annapurna’s many highs peaks, five are labeled using some variations of the name Annapurna. Of these, the two highest (Annapurna I and II), stand like bookends at the western and eastern ends of the massif.

Day 5 – Tuesday, 20th October 2009

I woke up in the morning with an awful headache, a sore throat and a red nose. I managed to catch a cold from Rafael, who himself was feeling better with each day. The perspective of walking for hours in the mountains with an exploding head was quite daunting. To be honest I didn’t feel like leaving my sleeping bag at all. Usually at home I would stay in bed trying to fight off the illness. On a trek, however, you don’t have that option. So I had to do the usual that is, wash, dress, pack my bag and join the group for breakfast. And maybe that new daily routine helped me forget about how awful I was feeling. Once I had my morning tea things started to look a bit better.

Our target for today was reaching a village called Machha Khola, which is situated at 883 metres above sea level. The scenery during our walk was stunning. As usual, we had to cross a few suspension bridges and believe it or not, I was getting better and better at ignoring the fact that they were wobbly. We climbed up onto a ridge overhanging the rapid waters of the mighty Buri Gandaki. The river has a strange colour. It seems white or light grey, sometimes silver. It is because the river carries the dust of the Himalayas. The mountains have been eroded by the water for thousands and thousands of years, hence the river’s colour.

After a while the path went back down to the banks of the Buri Gandaki. We passed a few settlements and rice terraces with even rows of this precious plant, so vividly green. Soon we reached the village of Lapubesi, which is inhabited by the Gurung people. The Gurungs live in the central part of the country, in areas such as Gorkha and Baglung and the high slopes of the Annapurnas. They are Tibeto-Burman people, usually farmers raising rice, millet and maize. They adhere to the Hindu and Buddhist religions, although they also have their own unique shamanistic religion, which certain rituals and ceremonies the Gurungs still combine with the beliefs of the two dominant religions of Nepal.

We stopped for drinks in a small tea shop in Lapubesi. We were greeted enthusiastically by a group of young people running the business. The girls served us lovely tea, while two young men enjoyed being in the centre of our attention. They were very confident and open, talkative as well, although their English was far from perfect. You could see that they are influenced by Western pop-culture. They wore black leather jackets, denim trousers, and one of them had a baseball cap. It was not, however, so much their appearance as their attitude that revealed their modern, Western inspired image – very cocky, ‘I’m a famous rock star’ behaviour. We had a little chat with them and it was quite shocking to discover they didn’t want to marry, because the girls in the local villages were ‘ugly’. Charming…

They were a bit tipsy, as they were celebrating ‘Man’s Day’ from early morning hours. They even offered beer to the guys from our group, but it was definitely too early in the day for that… Instead, the girls had a better idea: they gave each one of us a blessing by painting a tika on each person’s forehead and then putting colourful garlands around our necks. They also gave us some sort of deep fried pastry as a snack. It was very nice with the tea! As we were sitting there by the table, chatting and enjoying our break, we noticed a lively gathering in the backyard. We went to see what was happening and we saw people from the village playing instruments and dancing dressed up strangely.

Boys were pretending to be women, wearing long skirts and scarves covering their heads. They had long shawls tied around their waists. The boys spread those shawls in front of themselves, so that others could through flowers into them. At the end of the ceremony we would through money as an offering. As three young men were dancing, the others chanted hypnotising songs. Our Sherpa guides told us that during this local version of the Diwali festival, which lasted for a few days, the people celebrated animals, such as dogs and cows, but that particular day it was all about celebrating men. It is uplifting though, that they asked for offerings, which they would then, hopefully, give to the women. Everyone was included and gender equality sustained.

When I say everyone was included, I mean everyone! For a while we were just standing in front of the artists, observing their dance and taking photographs. Soon, however, we were invited, or rather pulled into the circle and found ourselves dancing with the villagers. The scene was beautiful. A bunch of Western tourists, with colourful dots painted on our foreheads, flowers stuck behind our ears and colourful Christmas-like wreaths around our necks, dancing like crazy with these charming people. It was a great experience, and it was also great being able to participate in such an event, interact with the villagers, and not only stand somewhere nearby taking pictures. It’s interesting how you can communicate without words. There is a huge wall between us in terms of the languages we use, we don’t understand each other very well when it comes to exchanging ideas verbally. Non-verbal means of communication are, however, very important and often much more useful in uniting people, with such different cultural backgrounds.

Finally, when the dance finished, we continued our trek to Machha Khola. We stopped again for lunch in a village called Nauli Khola. Immediately, when we sat down to eat, a bunch of local children ran up to us asking for chocolate. We said we don’t have anything for them, but they were quite stubborn and kept begging. It was rather annoying, they just didn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. It’s interesting when Rafael compares Nepal when he visited it ten years ago to the way things are these days. One of the sad things he noticed was that Western tourism spoilt the people. They are now more demanding, even the smallest children believe they can reach their hand out and receive something for nothing. Years ago the children Rafael encountered on his previous treks certainly weren’t as cheeky as the ones we’d seen so far on this trip. They used to be shy and didn’t run out on the path shouting ‘hello, chocolate!!!’ or ‘hello, give me your pen!!!’. I understand that these children are poor and underprivileged, but I simply hate being blackmailed into charity.

We arrived in Machha Khola in the afternoon. The evening looked pretty much the same as usual. Dinner was superb! It’s amazing what our cooks were able to prepare taking into consideration the technical limits. That day we had a delicious soup, vegetable curry and spring rolls, and pineapple for desert. Yes, our Sherpas even prepared desert! Every day! After supper we had another surprise waiting for us. A group of children from the village came to our camp and started singing and dancing to celebrate the Diwali festival. They organised a show especially for us. They were chanting for over an hour, and soon the guys from our group joined in and danced with the children. That day was certainly all about dancing and celebrations!

It feels like I’ve been gone for months, but it was only two weeks. I wonder: Does time slow down as oxygen levels decrease? Should Einstein have factored O2 into his E=MC2?

Annapurna: Disneyland for trekkers; Jerusalem for mountaineers. Where the trails lead to the very heart of the Himalaya, at altitudes far more oxygen-depleted than a pair of sea-level lungs can reasonably be expected to handle – yet they are lined with teahouses serving steak and apple pie to breathless punters day and night. If overweight North Americans, responsible for the demand for said fruit pastries, can make it up there, I figured, then so can I… and booked a bus ticket to Pokhara for a somewhat belated summer holiday in the mountains.

We were an all-woman party of eight, trekking with the famous Three Sisters, who organize all-woman treks led by female guides and porters. As we clambered up the four thousand steps that mark the beginning of every Annapurna trek, our party shrank in number, as two trekkers fell ill and had to be ponied to safety. This left six strong would-be summiteers, six porters and one guide to launch an assault on Annapurna Base Camp (4190masl) at the very centre of the Annapurna massif.

After seven glorious days of clear blue skies and spectacular views, we arrived at the magical top in a sudden blizzard, and while the Americans lodged a formal complaint about the weather, this blog’s snow-starved, would-be Scandinavian authoress joyfully launched a snowball attack on the kitchen staff and built a snowman (Nepal’s highest?). Three of our party rather worryingly developed altitude sickness, leaving only three healthy team members to celebrate our achievement with an(other) apple pie and some of the most noxious custard known to man.

As a holiday, this one gets five stars. Spending twelve days thinking about how much protein you’ve ingested in the last 24 hours allows simply no time to think about anything further away than the next teahouse. My life in Kathmandu melted away entirely and I was left in a tiny mountain world with sore calf muscles – which is a lot more relaxing than it sounds. I return now to the dusty bright capital toned, refreshed, my horizons not only widened but also raised by several thousand metres.

I’m already wondering when I can go again…

Es gibt also kaum Kältebrücken.

The joys of trekking in high latitude cannot be described but neither can the adventures related to

The joys of trekking in high latitude cannot be described but neither can the adventures related to be stated in words. Lot of trekkers and even sight seers suffer from high altitude sickness. People can be affected by it at 8000 feet but it doesn’t start showing before 12000 feet. It is not the height which causes it but the speed with which you climb that height.

The high altitude sickness is also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Men are more prone to it because they tend to climb the altitude rapidly. For people of both the genders it is always sensible to have enough number of days that give you time to acclimatize. To avoid getting ill in the mountains give yourself 2-3 days to get used to height. For any sort of vigorous activities let you body get accustomed to the cold, thinness of air and the general weather. Mostly doctors prescribe acetazolamide for people flying straight to high altitude places. But it is advisable to seek medical advice before consuming this medicine.

The symptoms of mountain sickness are headache, difficulties in sleeping, shortness of breath, fatigue, nausea of loss of appetite. When it becomes severe you might experience less urination, confusions, and difficulties in breathing, severe headache, loss of memory, delirium and unconsciousness. If the symptoms are intense then it can also prove fatal.

Between 6000-8000 feet trekkers and climbers should rest for a day or two before starting their journey. You can climb more when the sun’s out and rest 1000 feet above what you were the previous day. Heights can expose you to scorching sun light, spine chilling cold and wind. You should be take precaution against these as well.

Wear boots that give ankle support. Old worn out boots should be preferred instead of new ones. You should carry a pair of extra shoes to walk in around the camps. You should also carry along with you water and wind proof jacket. It’s called Parka/anorak jacket. Carry a pullover, 2-3 t-shirts, a shirt maybe and a long sleeved tee. Carry woolen bottoms as they are more comfortable than jeans. Also carry a woolen cap, woolen socks and gloves.

Lack of water in the body is a main reason behind people falling prey to altitude sickness. The air becomes thin at heights which is usually dry and results in loss of fluid from the body. Dehydration makes lowers you tolerance power, tires you quickly and makes you prone to heat and sunburns. So in the weeks prior to trekking time you should increase your water intake. If you have had enough fluid before and during trekking you’d sleep better and remain energized on all days of the trek. Get yourself a good comfortable sleeping bag and if you happen to be a light sleeper carry ear plugs.

Getting hang of the high altitudes differs from person to person. And this can be learned only from hand on experience. But if you have had no prior experience you can start by following the above hints.

On the cultural side, you will closely experience the Nepalese way of life both in the cities and in the rural areas throughout the tour. Then, in Chitwan Jungle park, you will enjoy elephant safari through the jungle to see wildlife and indulge yourself at the comfort of luxury at our best choice of resort with swimming pool.
Highlight of Pokhara:
Pokhara is an extraordinary landscape and one of the most attractive destinations in Nepal. The treasures of Pokhara include the tranquillity of Phewa Lake, spectacular views of Annapurna Himalayan range and Mount Machhapuchhare (6,977 m), luscious green hills, terraced farm slopes, countless species of vegetation, rushing rivers in a tropical-like environment. Pokhara is, since ancient times, the traditional export center for trade with India and Tibet. Merchants from remote Himalayan regions of Nepal, such as Muktinath and Mustang still come here with mule trains.
The Gurungs and Magars are the aboriginal inhabitants and remain the majority in the hill regions. But the urban population is now made up of diverse ethnic groups seeking employment opportunities. The Gurungs and Magars have reputation as hardworking farmers and valorous warriors who have earned worldwide fame as Gurkha soldiers.

This calm city of Pokhara serves as a base camp for trekking and rafting trips through the regions of Annapurna and Western Nepal. Baidam on the southeastern end of Phewa Lake and is dominated by restaurants, bars, hotels and shops, is the gathering place for travelers in the western regions of Nepal. The island temple of Barahi is accessible from Baidam by dug out canoes. This two-storied pagoda is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Ajima. On Saturdays, devotees paddle across the lake carrying live animals for sacrifice.

Bindhyabasini Mandir is a local Hindu temple on the northeast of Phewa Lake in the vicinity of the Old Bazaar. It is dedicated to Goddess Bhagwati. Devotees perform animal sacrifices and have picnics in the courtyard on Saturdays. The Old Bazaar area is still the commercial hub of merchants from the remote Himalayas while Phewa Lake site is a pleasure spot for holiday maker from around the world!
