I chose to explore the “Tremblay” surname today, my great-grandmother’s maiden nam

I chose to explore the “Tremblay” surname today, my great-grandmother’s maiden name. I have posted about Pierre Tremblay and Ozanne Achon, who were my immigrant ancestors. Tremblay and it’s variations is the most common French-Canadian surname, put it into Google translate and it comes back with “Smith”, the most common name in North America! The difference between “Smith” and “Tremblay” is that Smith is a common name that a lot of different families share, with no blood relationship, there was a smith in every village and hamlet in Europe, it was a “nickname”. But people with the name of Tremblay, Trombley, Trimble and variations in North America, ” in their tree, although a common name, are all cousins, descendants of Pierre du Tremble, from La Rochelle, France.

My great-grandmother, Celinase Tremblay was the granddaughter of Pierre Tremblay Romain, the Seignieur of Eboullements, Quebec in the early 1800’s. She was born at Charlevois and was married to Jean Desbiens of Ste-Jerome parish. They migrated to Essex County in 1890, after the birth of their third child with Celina’s parents, Philias Tremblay and Marie-Louise Dallaire, Extended family made the journey as well, but her father died less than a year after arriving, 1n 1891.

Here is my great-grandmother’s family:

As you can see, she had a large family. I found a few newspaper clippings in the Essex Free Press Archives at OurOntario as well:

I have a lot of research yet to do on this family. I found a few records on the Seeking Michigan website for the families that moved across the river. I have to find time to enter all of the sources and images that I’ve discovered into my database, but there’s a lot of searching left to do.

Here is Celina Tremblay Desbien’s pedigree chart:

La Presse announced the verdict passed down by the BAPE. In an article Denis Lessard gives his account of the events surrounding the project’s opposition and worries about the cost of the project.

The BAPE’s critical position with regard to the province’s lack of regard for local concerns will be received with a sigh of relief by those who opposed the project. The province goes back to the drawing board now and it is predicted that this will delay the project for a year or more.

This is gives mayor Tremblay and other political leaders a chance to get ahead of the horse to properly bring Montreal’s plan de transport to the table. “…now would be a good time for the experts to call for a comité de gouvernance du réseau routier et d’infrastructure transport, that brings together public health dept, community reps, STM, CN, MTQ,…” Jody Negley

Oui, tu as bien lu.

Just came back from voting and when you look at who’s on ballot and what’s been happening with the two main parties (read: corruption scandals), this occurred to me: Youppi for Mayor! The main reasons:

He’s orange (as good as a reason as any)

A vast majority of Montrealers love him

He has no mouth making it harder to lie, cheat or mutter stupidities

Maybe I should Twitter this. But I am too lazy to log in.
For city mayor, 6 candidates are running for office:

Michel Bédard
Équipe Bédard – Fierté Montréal

Richard Bergeron
Projet Montréal

Louise Harel
Équipe Harel – Vision Montréal

Louise O’Sullivan
Équipe Louise O’Sullivan – Parti Montréal – Ville-Marie

Michel Prairie
Indépendant

Gérald Tremblay
Équipe Tremblay – Union Montréal

Why not the following?
Harel is lost in translation and in her strange collaboration with dubious Najat Boughaba, a Muslim woman with links to anti-western views.
Communist Michel Prairie (The Communist League in Canada), the group’s general secretary and primary spokesperson, would better move to North Korea and live for real his adolecent views on society.
Louise O’Sullivan (born in Egypt) has a low-profile campaign and I am not expecting any surprises here.
Michel Bédard has promised to volunteer 150 hours per year, but I doubt that this is his ticket to the mayor’s office.
Richard Bergeron, married to Amina Ouaqouaq (of Moroccan origin) converted to Islam in the early ’90s. I do not think that he would bring anything fresh to this city.
Tremblay is my choice.

TIME Magazine in its August 2009 issue had an article that reinforced the fact that exercise does no

TIME Magazine in its August 2009 issue had an article that reinforced the fact that exercise does not make you thin. The article entitled “The Myth of Exercise” quoted a select few studies which found that exercise does not help very much in weight loss. I have to admit that this has cast a lot of confusion over this issue.

A lot of people out there are looking for the justification provided in the TIME magazine article. Exercise is a major pain point for people trying to lose weight. People would rather starve themselves than undergo an exercise regime.

The only thing that will help achieve weight loss is a caloric deficit. That is the golden rule. Certain exercises provide a smaller caloric deficit and others provide bigger ones. The key to success in weight loss is to choose exercises that will give a metabolic boost even after the exercises are finished. Off course one, must not forget about the importance of correct nutrition habits. Doing any amount of exercise while eating unhealthily is not going to offer any amount of weight loss.

As I had mentioned before, any weight loss initiative that is too centered around steady state cardiovascular exercises such as jogging/cycling/swimming is going to be tough. This has been addressed in great detail in my earlier articles entitled “How to make jogging work for weight loss”, “Why jogging is a losing battle for weight loss”, “Swimming – Another losing battle for weight loss”

There is no doubt that jogging, swimming or any cardio exercises have a tremendous benefit on one’s cardiovascular system and health in general but these are the wrong exercises to achieve long term weight loss.

The most effective exercises for weight loss are interval training and weight resistance exercises. Interval training involves high intensity cardio interspersed by very short periods of rest. As an example, each cycle of interval training involves running or cycling at your maximum ability for say 1 minute followed by 1 to 2 minutes of walking slowly. This is repeated for 4 to 10 cycles depending on your fitness. Fitness usually increases very rapidly with this type of training.

A meager 8 cycles of interval training is probably all you need to do. Believe me, you probably won’t be able to get past 8 cycles.

A study conducted by Tremblay entitled Impact of Exercise Intensity on Body fatness and Skeletal Muscles Metabolism compared the difference in fat burning in one group that did steady state endurance training such as jogging against another group that did interval training. The results showed that the interval training group had nine times greater loss in subcutaneous fat than the steady state cardio exercise group. Subcutaneous fat is the fatty layer stored under the skin.

The only downside to interval training is that it could be very demanding on the unfit person. Someone who is just starting an exercise program should refrain from doing interval training until they have exercised for at least 6 months. They could instead do weight resistance training which is the topic of discussion of part 2 of this article.

I could quote a dozen other studies and references which state that steady state cardio exercises do not provide sustained weight loss. Interval training on the other hand is like a blow torch that will melt body fat away. Interval training is the tool for Correct Weight Loss.

As I had mentioned earlier, its all based on the assumption that someone is eating healthy. No amount of interval training or resistance training will yield weight loss if one is consuming too many calories.

In Part 2, we will explore why weight resistance training is so effective for weight loss and how this may have been overlooked in the TIME magazine article.

Last week was hard work for the folks involved with the Turcot ‘s BAPE. Each day the commission assembled at St-Henri’s centre St-Zotique and heard between twenty and twenty-five presentations from a public concerned about the environmental impact of re-building our urban highways bigger and better. The commissioners Mme. Parent, M. Longpré, and M. Germain aught to be commended for conducting respectful, and adroit proceedings, it seemed like their eyes and ears were open, and the issues brought to the table were taken seriously.

A remarkable characteristic of this project’s opposition has emerged through this process and over the past few years. They are consistently polite, orderly, and on-point. Perhaps this is the petrified reaction of a shocked population, feeling powerless against the threat of expropriations and worse traffic down town, this blogger prefers to believe it is a function of the inate decency in the folks that live in my neighbourhood. Whatever the reason there has been little fist pumping, no burning effigies and hardly a raised voice during this entire process. The opposition has engaged in concentrated discussions, exploring the issues and fostering open lines of communication. The quality of the “mémoires”, presented last week by a great crosscut of Montreal’s urban community, tells the story of a well informed public with a desire to help re-build this complex of interchanges in the most sustainable way possible. The overwhelming message was that this project represents a crossroads, a once in a lifetime opportunity to make Montreal a better urban environment. Bringing more cars into the downtown is not the way to do it, and public transportation should be prioritized on at least an equal footing with automobile transportation.

Mayor Tremblay for the city of Montreal, Louise Harel new head of Vision Montreal, Thierry St-Cyr Bloc Qébecois MP for Jeanne-Le Ber, Stephane Bergeron of the Parti Qébecois, and M. André Lavallé among other Montreal politicians leant weight to an effort to send Transport Quebec’s proposal back to the drawing board (check out their “mémoires” here). With the mayor talking to the likes of Sadik-Kahn things could be looking in an ever more sustainable direction for Montreal, something to be hopeful about. With any luck all of this will result in a new plan that embraces the wealth of dynamic solutions available in the design of contemporary transportation infrastructure and Montreal will get the Turcot re-build it is seeking.

This week’s news of a chip designer leaving Sun (s JAVA) to work for Microsoft (s MSFT) could

This week’s news of a chip designer leaving Sun (s JAVA) to work for Microsoft (s MSFT) could be a sign that the Redmond giant is trying to build a closer relationship between its software and others’ hardware as a way to boost performance of applications and use the underlying chips more efficiently. It may be trying to optimize its software for a growing (but still small) number of users trying specialized servers in a bid to boost performance while saving energy.

The issue of getting software performance to scale linearly with the addition of more cores has become a vexing problem. Plus, as data center operators look for better application performance without expending as many watts, they are experimenting with different kinds of processors that may be better-suited to a particular task, such as using graphics processors for Monte Carlo simulations. This means that, on these specialized servers, in addition to a program running on multiple cores, it may also run on heterogeneous architectures. So the next step in this quest for better chip utilization and application performance could be optimizing software to run on specific types of hardware. Other options are better compilers or finding easier targets for efficiency gains in the data center.

It’s a problem that is receiving increasing attention in the computing world, especially as energy efficiency becomes more of an issue. So when the New York Times reported earlier this week that Mark Tremblay, a Sun fellow and chief technology officer for Microelectronics, left to work for Microsoft, it appeared that Microsoft was adding a silicon viewpoint as it explored how to boost performance of its software on the underlying hardware.

Microsoft has been tackling these issues with its investment into university research into multicore programming; it’s been conducting its own research into energy efficiency as well. Tremblay is working in Microsoft’s Strategic Software/Silicon Architectures group, which focuses on making Microsoft’s software work better on various types of hardware. Microsoft hasn’t returned my email for comment, but given’s Sun’s focus on multicore chip design, Tremblay will at least be helping Microsoft build better software for multicore chips.

My Tremblay and Desbiens lines are all tangled up, with generation after generation of intermarriage

My Tremblay and Desbiens lines are all tangled up, with generation after generation of intermarriages between the families for over three hundred years.

For example,
Etienne Debien II, first-born Desbiens in New France, married Marie-Dorothee Tremblay in 1715,
their grandson,
Etienne Desbiens IV was married to Marie-Francoise Tremblay in 1744,
their son,
Etienne Benjamin Desbiens married Felicite Savard in 1768, great-great-granddaughter of Etienne Desbiens II and Marie-Dorothee Tremblay through their daughter, Marie-Francoise Desbiens .

That’s just the tip of the iceberg, just my direct ancestors before 1800. My great-grandparents, Jean Desbiens and Celinase Tremblay, married in 1883, are just one of the many Desbiens-Tremblay marriages in the 19th century.

I imagine there were lots of inter-marriages in New France and Acadia, and everybody is related who live in or came from the area. It seems like any time I meet someone with French-Canadian roots, I have at least one ancestor and more often, several ancestors in common with them, and that’s with only one French-Canadian grandmother.

It doesn’t seem that illogical, when I think about it, with the religious restrictions of marrying outside of the Catholic faith, and the population increases in New France were from reproducing, not from immigration after the 1600’s. They were from already established families with a limited gene pool to fish from. After the expulsion a lot of families from Acadia came to New France , and, over the years moved back, so the Acadian surnames are found in Quebec as well.

My grandparents, Joephine Desbiens & Wm. Hines with my older brother, Fleming, and I. My grandmo

My grandparents, Joephine Desbiens & Wm. Hines with my older brother, Fleming, and I.

My grandmother, Josephine Desbiens was born in 1897 in Essex County, the daughter of John Desbiens And Celinase Tremblay. She grew up on her father’s farm in Maidstone Twp., Essex County with several brothers and sisters.
She married William Edgar Hines, son of John Haines and Harriet Doan of Rochester, in 1917 and moved to Essex in the house that her husband and his brother built. He worked for the railroad, so he built his garage from railroad ties. The railroad ran right behind their property. It was a modest house on Arthur Avenue in the town of Essex. It was well-taken care of, but showed the efects of the history of the town and railway, the walls weren’t square, as a result of a nitro-glycerine explosion in a traincar at the railyard. Most of the homes in town at that time were moved from their foundation a little that day.
That was not the only incident in the house, while my grandmother was out hanging laundry, the house caught fire with their two daughters inside. The oldest daughter was able to get out, but the youngest daughter died of burns. They had three more children after that, a daughter and two sons.
She passed away on July 4, 1994 at the age of 97.
