Ibland är ett vi viktigare än rätt vi, speciellt när det är höst som går mot vinter och när grannarna som flyttat in i lägenheten mitt emot är två och är det så där tydligt att det kan få ett nyblivet singelhjärta att brista. Om det kunde brista.

De Deense producer/dj Anders Trentemøller is bij ons vooral bekend van de radio edit van “Moan” of zijn remix van “What Else Is There?” van Röyksopp. De fans denken ook zeker aan de schitterende dubbel-cd “The Last Resort” of zijn Essential Mix op BBC uit 2006 die later terecht als beste van het jaar verkozen werd.

Op “Harbour Boat Trips” verzamelt Trentemøller de muziek waar hij naar eigen zeggen naar luistert op zijn meeste intieme momenten (hierbij bedoelt hij vermoedelijk niet tijdens het kakken maar bvb. wanneer hij van een gig thuiskomt). Hoewel elektronische muziek vaak zoek is op de cd, valt de dromerige, dikwijls donkere sfeer die we gewend zijn van Trentemøller’s eigen releases gemakkelijk te herkennen. De muziek, soms meer dan 40 jaar oud, is dikwijls afkomstig van lokale Deense groepen of meer experimentele artiesten.

I Got You On Tape – Somersault

We beginnen met dromerige vocals begeleid door akoestische gitaar in “Heavy Water/I’d Rather Be Sleeping” en “I Turn My Face To The Forest Floor”. In “Lifesaver” begint alles wat te kraken en wordt alles nog intiemer met de Björk-achtige stem van Emiliana Torrini (vooral bekend van de radiohit “Jungle Drum”). In “Somersault” wordt de reverbknop weer volledig opengedraaid met erna nog het melancholische “Gila” van Beach House.
Na “Anenome” horen we de eerste elektronische bliepjes met de Nic Endo-remix van “Aly, Walk With Me”. Een donkere downtempo bas voert het woord en zet zich door in het experimentele “Back to the Burner” en wordt dan alleen nog onderbroken door een zeer coole Russische stem die zeer goed de spanning opbouwt naar “Cheree” van Suicide na een naadloze overgang.

Joy Division – She’s Lost Control

Hier lijkt een hoofdstuk afgesloten en na een fade-out bouwen minimal techno-kicks van “Phosphorescence” minutenlang de spanning op om dan de overgang te maken naar het zowaar dansbare(!) “Confidence” met onopvallend reeds de vocals van de volgende track. In “Devil’s Water” horen we Trentemøller bijna zelf aan het werk, deze beweert echter zelf de track van Rennie Foster geleend te hebben. In de Four Tet-remix van “Melody Day” door Caribou horen we terug de gitaar en als de luidsprekers luid genoeg stonden een stem die onverwacht voor een waar kippenvelmomentje zorgt. De bassen worden luider en bouwen schijnbaar op naar een climax tot we de bekende riff horen van “She’s Lost Control” van Joy Division, min of meer geslaagd gecovered door The Raveonettes. Hierna blijven we in de grimmige postpunk sfeer met het bekende “I Know I’ll See You” van A Place To Bury Strangers. Na “Ghost Rider” van terug Suicide wilde ik zelfs controlleren of de juiste cd eigenlijk nog opstond tot net op tijd alles vertraagt naar “Fantomes” van Khan dat een late-night sfeer creëert zoals alleen Max Berlin voordien beter kon met Elle & Moi. Dezelfde sfeer is ook duidelijk voelbaar in “Vamp” van Trentemøller zelf.

Tenslotte sluit Trentemøller af met het funky “Kamanda’s Response” van Two Lone Swordsmen en een even funky mashup van “Copenhagen” van Copenhagen Collective met het bekende “Tainted Love” zodat we helemaal in de juiste sfeer het eventuele nachtleven kunnen intrekken!

De moeite want:

- U zocht nog een cd die U eindeloos op de achtergrond kan opleggen

- Trentemøller mixt en deelt zijn muzieksmaak, en die mag zeer goed genoemd worden

Skippen want:

- U luistert alleen naar muziek waarbij elektronica aan te pas komt

- U luistert nooit naar muziek waarbij elektronica aan te pas komt. Wat zit U dan eigenlijk een bespreking van een album van Trentemøller te lezen, kruip maar snel terug in uw bekrompen wereld vol met akoestische gitaren en singer-songwriters, waste of time!

vicvictorious is home for the weekend! To celebrate her return to the tdot, here’s Trentemoller’s Remix of Royksopp’s ‘What Else Is There”…’cause she got to see Trentemoller live and we didn’t. Royksopp has been tearing up the Euro scene for years, but it wasn’t until the release of  their alblum Junior that I really began to dig this Norweigan duo. ‘Psychedelish’ is one of  my fave Royksopp chunes, a cruisy little ditty sans vocals that sounds like it’s straight outta ‘I Heart Huckabees’.

For a disconcerting period of time an uneasy relationship has developed between me and new music. For years it’s been one of my biggest interests, but that passion which used to lead to me catching the first train home after been out clubbing until 6am, regularly reading a whole host of music magazines or spending what limited money I had on expensive vinyl has all but ebbed away.

I feel confused. What type of music am I really into? Who would I say is my favourite band or artist? Am I getting old too quickly or have I taken a wrong turn that I can’t put right? It’s become a vicious circle; stop going out to live music as much and you’re not seeing new influences and ideas for the next act to check out; stop listening to specialist radio shows and start believing the style of music you like is running out of ideas; see a festival line up and instantly rule it out on the grounds the acts you have heard of have done something to put you off and the rest are just names which mean little.

When on the second day of this year’s Big Chill Festival one of the stage comperes tried to rile us in the crowd by reading an exert from The Independent’s review of the first day, which stated the festival is “for people who used to be cool”, I realised I was in exactly the right place to find some answers. This was the third straight year I’d attended and the first traces of my music-loving issues could be found just before my first visit.

The line up featured a smattering of acts I knew I’d enjoy seeing, but the majority were unknown until a read of their online biography and visit to their MySpace page. It was a great opportunity to experience not only the tried-and-tested but, been there with two people not suffering the same music issues I am, test if the unknown could still excite and whether my life-long love affair with seeking new music could be given the kiss of life.

The festival began with a trip to the recent past in the shape of the new Rizla dance area and Annie Nightingale. From aged 20-24 I had been hugely into clubbing before it suddenly and unexpectedly stopped been enjoyable. I’ve not been properly clubbing for over two years - just seen some DJ sets at the last two Big Chills - and recently have perplexed one of my best friends with my reasons for refusing to join him on his sudden rebirth of loving it again. Annie Nightingale had been one of those specialist radio DJs who had given me hours of enjoyment and to see her live proved a fantastic moment.

The area was beautiful, with Annie playing in a small camper van overlooking a crowd who at the back were on a raised platform. Ignore the fakeness of the palm trees and, as the sun glared down with hundreds of people going crazy to Annie’s mix of breakbeat and dub-step, it felt like we could have been in Ibiza on the Space terrace. I danced in my undignified-but-having-a-good-time-way and a flood of great memories came back. She even ended with a Prodigy record – the band which first got my into dance music. And it was 4.30pm on Friday and I could have been at work, beautiful.

Then the modern confusion came back as we went to see Roots Manuva. I’ve recently developed a taste for Hip Hop and to see one of the people who helped me make the natural leap to it from breakbeat was exciting. He came on over an hour late and performed a reasonable but flat set which failed to live up to the high expectations I had. Our evening was concluded by seeing a disappointing set from The Orb, which we had sacrificed watching The Thievery Corporation for, and a downtempo performance from Future Loop Foundation that enthralled everyone but me. Only a promising set from Daedelus in the Club Tent stopped me from giving myself up to the old people’s home for past-it music fans there and then.

But there was hope for me. Saturday began with the beautiful Swedish voice of rising star Lykke Li which had me adding her to my mobile phone wishlist of music I need to download. I saw Beth Orton for a second time, the first in Leeds nine years ago had been boring and this was no better, but a lively festival-friendly breaks set from A-Skillz had me back on my feet dancing while trading sips of my can of cider for a jig with someone’s glow stick. It wasn’t enough to get me checking out any breakbeat nights locally, mainly because I’m the only person I know who loves it, but it just maybe, maybe might make me consider a clubbing night out when it’s next offered to me.

Next up was Trentemoller, an act who’s MySpace page had convinced me were worth seeing over Mr Scruff. At last here was a hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck-and-big-beaming-smile-moment to add to my pile of musical highlights. Each song would begin melodically slowly before building up into a full on dance piece, while the supporting visuals added to the entertainment.

This was special. Thank goodness my top ten live music moments of all time has not been completed like I feared, as this was a strong contender.

It rained Sunday afternoon, so we found sanctuary in Media Mix tent where stand up comedians performed – a wonderful mix of clever humour and cringe-worthy awfulness depending on who’s turn it was. In the evening came more wonderful music; first from the Buzzcocks, who attracted a very un-Big Chill mosh pit that was great fun, then an hour and half of blissful crooning from Leonard Cohen.

The Bays ended my Big Chill weekend – and blew me away – for the second year in a row. This time they played with an orchestra to music composed live – no rehearsing, completely improvised. I made my way to the front and proceeded to dance like a loon. I may not see much live music over the next year, but if The Bays manage a tour in the North I’ll be somewhere near the front again.

And that concluded another amazing Big Chill Festival experience. I don’t know if one of the many friendly people I chatted to over the weekend included that journalist from The Independent, but they were describing me. The Big Chill allowed me to rock and rave at different times, lie in the sun and dance in the darkness, a mashed up bloke told me he’d found a shortcut home around some bins and Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz was upset that I didn’t realise who she was, I laughed hard – and I was stung by a bee.

Perhaps it didn’t give me all the answers I wanted, but this is a festival that can be what you want it to be and at the moment that’s perfect for me. I was 22 again dancing like an idiot on the dancefloor, I was 17 rocking in the mosh pit, I was 45 watching an old man sing wise songs about war but most importantly I was 26 years old having a fantastic weekend. I may not get out much these days, but I’ll be back next year.

The Found Fun, Lost Weekend mitxtape was something i decided to put together early yesterday morning. All the songs were chosen on the spot, i had no certain tracks or anything that i was gonna work off of they way that i usually do. I just wanted to make a soundtrack that we could stick on back home after The Bloody Beetroots gig last night (one of the top 3 gigs i’ve been to, easily, but more about that soon). So i started off the mix with a bit of humour then straight into one of my own remixes and then from there onwards just some wonky, glitchy, digital dance music followed by some fast rapping infused songs and then onto a kinda chillout section at the end.

Who needs beats when you can go Beatless?

The Beatless Collection is the ULTIMATE chill out album…and not in a boring Cafe del Mar kind of Way.

Hoje, eu fui roubada de verde-e-amarelo na Dinamarca – primeiro IDH mundial, considerado o 2º país mais seguro do planeta… Saiba como  isso aconteceu no primeiro dia de festival em Roskilde.

Mas, para poupar palavras, segue o vídeo com a minha expressa revolta e o caso narrado:

Eis o que acontece por aqui: a Dinamarca não tem pobreza e por isso importa mão de obra barata de gente de outros lugares pra que trabalhem em subempregos. O festival gera uma quantidade absurda de lixo já que a galera é muito mais desleixada e joga tudo no chão.

Mas, a Dinamarca é o país mais ECOLOGICAMENTE CORRETO DO MUNDO e, por isso, para cada pedaço de lixo, você ganha CENTAVOS quando retorna aos postos. Dinamarques não se importam com isso mas os CIGANOS, sim.

a galera senta no meio do lixo e é ok.

Ciganos chegam a pagar até 1000 reais no mercado negro pela pulseirinha que dá acesso ao acampamento pra catar lixo o dia inteiro e chegam a ganhar mais de 2000 reais por dia com o lixo que eles pegam por lá (to quase fazendo isso, depois do roubo). Mas além de lixo, eles também pegam o que tem na frente…coisas como a minha barraca por exemplo que sumiu INTEIRA com TUDO DENTRO. No fim do dia eu vi um grupo de ciganos arrastando uma barraca inteira.

Ok: não posso simplesmente acusar e condenar os ciganos, qualquer pessoa pode ter feito isso com a minha barraca, mas o fato é que eu vi estas coisas.

Enfim, vamos aos shows:

Volbeat, banda dinamarquesa de rock, esquentou a galera que lotou a arena rapidíssimo.

a galera não se mexe, só coloca, NO MÁXIMO, as mãozinhas pra cima.

Logo em seguida, veio Kayne West que, subiu ao palco e já deu vexame pois chamou ao invés de ‘HELLO ROSKILDE’ soltou um ‘HELLO COPENHAGEN’ e fez 60.000 pessoas  usando os famigerados óculos-hype-hip-hop que TODO mundo usa por aqui normalmente nas ruas, vaiarem em tom uníssono.

Mew, banda dinamarquesa de soft-rock, sensação na Europa e que aposto ser a próxima sensação por aí, tocava ao mesmo tempo na outra tenda e eu só consegui ver 10 minutos do show antes de correr pra fila do Trentemoller.

mew entrou vestindo capa preta em clima de mistério e medo.

A noite fechou, depois de shows como LUCY LOVE, IN THE THRONE ROOM, VASARAT, PETTER, SOCIAL DISTORTION, TRIO CAMPANELLA, HOT 8 BRASS BAND, GROUNDATION,VOLBEAT, PISTOL, LUCINDA WILLIAMS, FUCKED UP, ZIZEK CLUB, GASLIGHT ANTHEM, ST. VINCENT, JALTALÍN, KASSAV’ e ainda o INCRÍVEL E HIPNOTIZANTE show do TRENTEMOLLER.

Trentemoller subiu ao placo 12:30 sob uma lua amarela íncrivel e com o palco montando no MEIO da galera. No palco central, um corpo de balé usando chapéu com franjas longas cobrindo o rosto, fazia uma dança que parecia um ritual indígena. Além de ter trazido os vocais originais dos remixes, Trentemoller também trouxe uma orquestra pessoal com direito a violino, violencelo, harpa e flautas transversais, além dele mesmo tocar um pandeiro.

O ápice foi quando dois guarda-chuvas com franjas se abriram atrás do artista e dois olhos foram projetados e lágrimas em formas de balões d’água foram içados no cabo que subiram por cima das 70.000 cabeças dançantes em Roskilde.

O vídeo tá com o som estourado e ruim mas veja e você entenderá. Foi o maximo que consegui filmar antes que me pedissem pra guardar a câmera.

É isso, não conseguirei fazer o resto da cobertura já que eu estou sem tenda, não existe mais espaço pra acampar e não consigo voltar de Copenhagen-Roskilde todo dia porque custa aproximadamente 200 reais ao total.

Deixo a foto da única cerveja que eu consumi até agora desde que cheguei na Europa e ainda assim, só o fiz, porque um grupo de suecos alegres me deu uma ao saber que eu era brasileira.

Schools out for the summer and I’m on my way back to Sweden. Just went thru the most embarrassing security control in my life. Apparently I’d left my sharpest scissors in my computer bag beneath all of my underwear. Marta and Sofia got the year’s biggest laugh out of it; they had to x-ray the bag three times before I found the bloody scissors.

It has been a truly intense week. It started last Friday by picking up my sister at the airport and somehow ending up in a car with amazing DJ Trentemöller and his lovely girlfriend and getting free passes to his show at poble Español in the Terazza, all thanks to Emma who is the one that introduced us. I must say, it was quite the experience, and although my sister had the flu and a terrible cough and she felt really bad, neither one of us wanted to leave that party ever.

The week continued altering school, beach, collection shopping/ planning with cold long drinks in the warm Barcelona nights. A pretty nice week actually that after spending the celebration of san Juan in Razz ended with me having an interview a British fashion empire, which went so well that I’m interning as assistant designer there starting September.  I can’t wait!

As I’m writing this I look out from my planes window beholding the spectacular sea of clouds beneath me. I’m not to thrilled about going home just jet, one weeks sun and relaxation wouldn’t have been bad.  Got to enjoy the new Barcelona airport though, very Scandinavian in it’s design, a lot of light, glass, white, beige, wood and minimalism. It even has a nice atrium where you can sit and sunbath and not smoke. We found the smoking part a tad peculiar since the atrium with its massive bronze sculpture in the middle was surrounded with sand filled trays with big signs with the symbol of non smoking and with the following text beneath: smoking is not allowed on airport premises unless marked otherwise. Should have taken a photo but I got so puzzled that I forgot all about my camera.

Anyhow, I’ve got all my collections parts gathered, now starts the fun part, assembling it. The necklaces are cut out, and some of them already painted. I’m so happy, because the turned out really nice.

I think we are flying over Stuttgart now, we’re almost home, I can’t wait, it’s going to be a great summer.
