Sometimes I run and hide when I see a smile on Fletch’s face – he’s always up to something and tonight was no exception. “Look” he says with a smile on his face. He points towards a trailer, upon which sits a pretty boat with a pretty big engine.

It’s a 14 foot Grew fiberglass run about with a 75 horsepower Chrysler outboard engine. I walk around it, knocking on the hull and poking and prodding various bits of boat as I examine it.

Then I ask the fateful question: Does it…? “No, it does not have a name”.

Oh. I see.

So here we are with another boat, the fourth boat in our fleet, another boat that along with the 18 foot Cadorette needs a name.

Send us your name suggestions and you too can win a prize if we choose your name, two prizes or maybe one big prize if you can name both the new boats!

There is a real freedom that comes when we read the wind, work the sails and head where we want, fre

There is a real freedom that comes when we read the wind, work the sails and head where we want, free of speed bumps and yellow lines. Yes, a wonderful freedom that lasts so long yet ends so early. The boats are all out of the water, the dock is empty and all of out sailors are wearing warm sweaters instead of hats and t-shirts. As much as I love the winter I do miss those wonderful days summer days spent sailing around the Bay of Quinte.

Although the bay is frozen we can recapture that sense of freedom by trading our sails for skis and enjoying the snow in a special way – it’s called Track 3 skiing. The name is derived from the three tracks left in the snow by a skier carving down a run on a single ski while using two outrigger poles with small ski blades for balance and turning. Depending on the nature of the disability, a skier may eventually do without the outriggers and use conventional ski poles.

Track 3 Skiing provides children, youth and adults with disabilities the opportunity to safely experience the pleasure of downhill skiing as a leisure activity. Post-Second World War servicemen, injured during their tour of duty, were pioneers of the specialized alpine sport (watch it during the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver). In the late 1940s, these soldiers with disabilities benefited from courses teaching them how to ski despite their injuries.

Besides being a speedy sailor, Jennifer Smith is also a downhill demon when she hits the hills at Batawa – she spoke about her experiences last year during an interview with the Trentonian.

The Batawa ski hill is the host facility for our local Track 3 program. Similar programs are operating at Georgian Peaks Ski Club, Alpine Ski Club and Craigleith Ski Club in the Collingwood area, the London Ski Club and Horseshoe Valley Ski Club in Barrie and the Waterloo Region Track 3 Ski School.

For more information check the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing, the Ontario Track 3 ski organization, the London Track 3 program, the Waterloo Track 3 program

The skiing ability is the same – the only difference is the Tracks in the snow…

He’s almost finished it, which is pretty good going by anyone’s standards.

Interesting. Earlier this year when I offered him Lean Mean Thirteen to read he turned his nose up. Maybe it was the lurid pink and yellow cover. Or the fact that it’s written by a woman! Or he didn’t like the first few pages …

Or maybe it’s the fact that One For the Money reads more like a novel than another installment in a franchise. It’s certainly a big departure from my Dad’s usual diet of Jack Higgins, Gerald Seymore, Tom Clancy, Andy McNab, Chris Ryan and Lee Child. Great writers as those all are.

Glad he loved it so much. Another convert to the tribe of Evanovich!

I parachuted into the Janet Evanovich empire at Lean Mean Thirteen – still my favourite of the canon. But like every amateur sleuth I’ve always wanted to go back to the beginning. How did it all start? Both for Janet and her heroine, the great Stephanie Plum.

Last week I was in luck. Malvern Library just happened to have a copy of One for the Money on its shelves. And there she was. Stephanie Plum, back in the days when she was merely an ex lingerie buyer, Lula still a prostitute, and Joseph Morelli still the boy who made Stephanie play the “Choo-choo’ game in his Dad’s garage.

The novel proved an eye-opener, and not just for introducing me to Stephanie’s distinctive way with automobiles. The writing here is denser than in the later novels. Janet describes more, in more depth, and with more variety.

The violence is also more pronounced. Ramirez proves a terrifying foe. Make no mistake, Stephanie really suffers in this book. And as she stumbles deeper and deeper into the mad, bad world of bounty hunting we experience real fear for her.

What fascinates me is that these pluses don’t necessarily produce a better novel. By Lean Mean Thirteen, Janet Evanovich has honed her craft. Long descriptions are gone. Aspects that worked in the earlier novels are ramped up to produce a more polished, genuinely comic tone.

Now I wonder if the Little Gods of Malvern Library will be kind to me. Next time I venture North toward Graham Rd, what are the chances that Two for the Dough will be there waiting for me?

Happy Halloween, everyone! Be really cool to have a wedding on Halloween, but this post isn’t about that.. :(

I had some free time today to scope out the locations for Nancy’s and Erik’s wedding (happening in June) where I drove up to Trenton. You know, I have lived in NJ my entire life and this was the first time I went into Trenton! Strange, right?

Well I found some really nice spots where I would want to do the bridal party sessions and just the B+G shots! I think it is pretty cool to have the wedding ceremony in a museum instead of a church. At least I think so!

Here are some shots!

TRENTON, N.J. — A Florida man accused of killing his son-in-law in New Jersey is arguing that he was unable to commit the crime because he was too fat.

When Edward Ates takes the stand in his defense Wednesday, he’s expected to tell jurors he wouldn’t have had the energy needed to climb and descend the staircase where prosecutors say the killer was perched when he shot Paul Duncsak, a 40-year-old pharmaceutical executive, in 2006.

An attorney for Ates claims that in 2006, the 62-year-old who stood 5 feet 8 and tipped the scales at 285 pounds was in such bad physical shape that couldn’t have pulled off the shooting or the fast getaway the killer made.

Ates’ attorney Walter Lesnevich said his client’s weight has caused Ates’asthma, sleep apnea and other obesity-related ailments.

“You look at Ed and you don’t need to hear it from a doctor,” Lesnevich said.

Houston defense attorney David Berg, author of “The Trial Lawyer: What It Takes To Win,” an analysis of trial tactics and strategies, said that he had never heard of such a defense but that it could work.

“It’s an unusual defense, but it would be a credible defense if the facts really fit in,” Berg said.

One of my past-times since I’ve moved to New Jersey is to spend time driving around Trenton.

One of my past-times since I’ve moved to New Jersey is to spend time driving around Trenton. Just to give you an idea, I live on the outskirts of Trenton, closer to Princeton than I am to the center of Trenton. For those not familiar, Trenton is really close to Princeton but in no way similar other than they’re both located in New Jersey.

Before I moved up here, I basically knew that Trenton was a rough place that had seen better days. It’s been rated among the most dangerous cities in the United States and is the opposite of a tourist destination – a tourist repellent, i guess. Since I’ve been here, I’ve learned about Trenton’s better days. It’s the site where the revolutionary war turned; that picture of George Washington crossing the delaware River was a depiction of him entering Trenton. It used to be a city for manufacturing, even boasting on one of the bridges crossing town that “trenton makes, the world takes”. It’s a historic city and the capital of one of our most important states.

However, I’ve also learned what happened that destroyed Trenton. The riots of 1968 were especially bad here, as well as in Newark and Camden – two other places that have experienced massive decay. (For some compelling reading on Trenton’s riots, check out this story).

I say all that to say, the city has seen better days and is still in the process of recovering from it’s worst days, even though they happened nearly 40 years ago. What I see now is urban decay and it always reminds me of Baltimore….

I was addicted to the Wire for the first 4 seasons, but stopped watching when I moved here because it felt a little too real. Literally miles from my house, I can drive around and see corner boys, graffiti depicting slain gang heroes, urban decay and poverty. I don’t need it on TV.

What I loved about the Wire was that it depicted the harsh reality of life as a poor person in a very challenging city. Classrooms in the schools were a disaster due to the corner kids who had been trained for life on the street corner not in the classroom. Many of these kids were experiencing very real challenges that I cannot even imagine – crack addicted mothers, absent fathers, constant pressure from drug pushers to work, and friends who had chosen the wrong path. The ones who just wanted to keep their nose clean and do a good job were faced with never-ending challenges as they tried to navigate this environment, many of them on their own.

Which brings me to Jasper Howard, the student who was stabbed to death after a party at the UConn Student Union on Saturday night, a story I described on my Twitter as “my nightmare”. Jasper had a tough upbringing in Miami. One story put it this way

“Howard, known as “Jazz” to his teammates, often talked about his tough time growing up in Miami. His mother, Joangila, worked many jobs to support him and his sisters, Keyondra and Jasmine, who is afflicted withmeningitis.

Howard, the first in his family to go to college, also spoke often about his dream of making it professionally so he could support his family.

“He was a good child, a wonderful, sweet, loving child,” Joangila Howard told CNN affiliate WSVN. “I just hope whoever did it turns himself in. [Jasper] didn’t deserve this.”"

For some reason, I’m sure we’ll find out soon, someone decided to take the life of this young man who was literally THE hope of his family and was simply trying to get an education and take advantage of the opportunities afforded to him by playing football.

I guess I say all this to say – the kids who are forced to grow up in difficult environments like Trenton, Camden, Newark, Baltimore and many other places where poverty ravages lives and families need all the help they can get, from all of us so that they can have the opportunity and the choice to enjoy something different. I certainly don’t have all the answers, but I do have hope when I see things like the young man I saw crossing the street today who had purpose in his eyes and a bookbag on his chest and was not wandering around the corners but instead appeared to be headed home from school. It’s kids like this who will change lives and communities.

Sadly, Jasper Howard will never get that chance but maybe this tragedy, no matter what the circumstances, will help us all to pause and remember that while shows like The Wire are not real, there are literally millions of kids trying to make the best of themselves and their families. The rest of us should be doing everything we can to help these courageous kids and keep them safe.

A little over two weeks ago I had the pleasure of shooting Tim’s High School Senior portraits at Elizabeth Park in Trenton Michigan. The weather was bad for most of the day, but the clouds parted and the sun popped out and we were able to get’er done!

For this shoot I used a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 HSM lens as well as a Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8 Fisheye lens. I usually wouldn’t shoot a portrait with a fisheye lens, but it was fun to experiment with especially when Tim had his trombone slide resting on my shoulder. Here are a few of my favorites…

Enjoy!

I would like to thank Don Van Buhler for helping me during this session. As always, it greatly appreciated.

For all my New Jersey readers (and the tri-state area in general), when I say ‘Trenton,’ what comes to mind? Poverty? Crime? Ghetto? Slum? Well, unfortunately, this is true to some extent. But many don’t know that Trenton has alot to offer to New Jersey residents and visitors alike.

Downtown Trenton (courtesy of Wikipedia)

A few days ago, I made my weekly trip down to the state capitol to visit my girlfriend who now lives in the historic Mill Hill section of the city which is in the downtown district. This part of Trenton offers everything from museums, concert halls, cultural restaurants, art galleries, sporting venues and many other arts and culture activities. I know I use this term alot but it is truely one of New Jersey’s hidden gems and… it gets no respect, in the words of the great Rodney Dangerfield. Everything important that goes down in this state, probably happens in Trenton.

I took the day to sort of wander around the downtown district and explore. And that I did…I put about 4 miles on my Odometer. But I saw alot and it made me appreciate this great state even more and adds to my hunch that I’m going to live here forever.

As I like to do in my posts, I’m going to give a little brief history of Trenton for your enrichment. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, Trenton was a major manufacturing center. One relic of that era is the slogan “Trenton Makes, The World Takes”, which is displayed on the Lower Free Bridge (just north of the Trenton-Morrisville Toll Bridge). The city adopted the slogan in 1917 to represent Trenton’s then-leading role as a major manufacturing center for rubber, wire rope, ceramics and cigars. Along with many other United States cities in the 1960s and 1970s, Trenton fell on hard times when manufacturing and industrial jobs declined. Concurrently, state government agencies began leasing office space in the surrounding suburbs. Since Trenton is New Jersey’s capital, state government leaders (particularly governors William Cahill and Brendan Byrne) attempted to revitalize Trenton by making it the center of state government. Between 1982 and 1992, more than a dozen office buildings were constructed primarily by the state to house state offices. Today, Trenton’s biggest employer is still the state of New Jersey. Each weekday, 20,000 state workers flood into the city from the surrounding suburbs. (Thanks to Wikipedia for this history lesson)

The rest of this post will show the photos I took on my daylong excursion through the city.

So, these are the highlights of my little local on-foot excursion. I encourage all of my New Jersey area readers to take a day trip to the state capitol and experience the buzzing state center. I say the same for any of my readers, no matter where you live. Get familiar with your surroundings. Experience everything your state has to offer. Taste it. Hear it. Smell it. Touch it. Appreciate it. These are the joys of life…stop and smell the flowers. If you do, you will gain a greater appreciation for the place you call home. I know I have…

Our state government is an overwhelming bureaucracy. New Jersey has a “Department” for every imaginable aspect of our lives. We have a DEP, DOT, DOE, etc., etc. What you won’t find in Trenton is a DOCS—Department of Common Sense!

Each of these Departments has grown extensively since their creation and has morphed into powerful entities operated by appointed “officials” with the apparent ability to make life difficult, if not intolerable, for the residents of New Jersey.

The State laws which are interpreted and enforced by these Departments are often antiquated, irrelevant, arbitrary, contradictory or otherwise unfair in their application.

In the absence of a magic wand, these entities are here to stay. However, why can’t the legislature create a common sense procedure which affords immediate relief to those individuals or municipalities which find themselves boxed into a Catch 22 situation by one (or more) of our State Departments. Every municipal engineer and borough administrator could cite numerous examples of such crippling bureaucratic red tape. Currently, the only relief available is the white flag of surrender or litigation. Law suits are time consuming, expensive and more often than not, result in decisions which perpetuate other bad decisions and confuse rather than clarify the law.

Why not a simple procedure where, under the proper circumstances, the three State legislators of any particular district can craft immediate relief for their aggrieved constituents?

In reference to the title of this post, who the heck knew that the great state of New Jersey had its own state boat?? You see, as corny as it sounds, you do learn something new every day. Cliches are cliches for a reason folks…

I had the opportunity recently to take a 3 hour cruise on the AJ Meerwald which is, in technical terms, a Delaware Bay oyster schooner. In layman’s terms, it’s a fishing boat. She was a very majestic, classic boat…one similar to the ones you probably saw in Pirates of the Caribbean.

Before the sails went up

We (my girlfriend and I) went on a nice 3 hour evening cruise up the Delaware River, leaving out of the Trenton Waterfront. The evening was full of enriching educational talks, live music on the boat, and all the wine, cheese, grapes and crackers one could ever hope for (if that’s something that people hope for anyway). The waters were calm, the breeze was gentle, the temperature was balmy and comfortable. Can’t ask for much more than that.

Sails flying high

On to the boring history stuff…I know, I know…bare with me. As stated before, The A.J. Meerwald is the state ship of New Jersey. She is a restored oyster dredging schooner, whose home port is in Bivalve, Commercial Township, New Jersey. Launched in 1928, A.J. Meerwald was one of hundreds of schooners built along South Jersey’s Delaware Bayshore before the decline of the shipbuilding industry which coincided with the Great Depression. Today, A.J. Meerwald is used by the Bayshore Discovery Project for onboard educational programs in the Delaware Bay near Bivalve, and at other ports in the New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware region. (Thank you Wikipedia for this beautifully succinct and detailed history)

Heavy duty rigging

Okay, done. No more history. Now, on to a little free plug (and I mean free…I get nothing for doing this) for the Bay Shore Discovery Project which runs the AJ Meerwald cruises. They have cruises going on throughout the fall season leaving from all different ports throughout New Jersey. Tickets are decently priced anywhere from $15-$30 for different types of cruises. Support these people! Without stuff like this, life is boring! Go check them out and support New Jersey culture…see their website below.
