Cartman is truely their epitome of their whole creation. Trey Parker and Matt Stone deserve nothing but praise for the type of boundry’s that they constantly push in today’s society.

This was the last episode of the 13th season of South Park. That makes me sad. Wednesday nights will

This was the last episode of the 13th season of South Park. That makes me sad. Wednesday nights will be forever emptier because of this. Well, not forever more. They’ll be better again in a few months when South Park is back.

In this episode, the boys go to the local water park, Pi Pi’s, where Kyle opts to stay out of the water indefinitely due to its incredibly high concentration of urine. Cartman, however, is disappointed for other reasons: the water park is filled with minorities.

Black people.

Mexicans.

Chinese.

He thinks he even saw some Native Americans.

This, of course, is less stated than it is sung in a beautiful song. Trey Parker is quite the composer – always has been. Indeed, Cartman predicts that the Mayans got the year of the Apocalypse wrong and that rather then 2012, it’s actually happening in 2009, since the water park has been taken over by minorities and Cartman is the “last of his kind.”

When warned that the pee content of his water park is so high that the park is on the verge of disaster, Pi Pi does nothing – to the detriment of human kind . . . well, human kind currently in attendance at his water park. With the urination of one final little girl, the water becomes 100% pee and disaster ensues. Everything goes to hell – in Cartman’s eyes, the Mayan Apocalypse.

In order to drain the pee from the park, Kyle has to hold his breath and swim through it down to an underwater release valve, but in order to do that he must first drink pee in order to avoid the bends. Since pee grosses him out so much, this is obviously a monumental task. It’s pretty hilarious listening to the other boys be honest about all the things they do related to pee that Kyle considers unacceptable:

- pee in the shower

- pee in the pool

- not wash their hands after peeing

Gross!! I’d never not wash my hands after peeing. Yeah . . . never . . .

Obviously the moment Kyle drank the pee they were all rescued, since is was discovered that the antidote to anger caused by the overexposure to pee is bananas. And yes, the part where the monkeys got angry while getting urinated on was hilarious and disgusting.

Funny enough, I loved that Kyle hated bananas so much and had to eat one after drinking the pee. Why? My wife loves most foods but HATES bananas. She finds them revolting, particularly the smell. Sometimes to be cruel when we’re at the grocery store I’ll hold a bunch of bananas behind her head and then say her name so that she turns around and finds them there. She hates that. I’m very mature.

This wasn’t a killer episode like a few of the other poignant ones this season, but it was amusing, particularly the unbearably racist sentiments that got called out and exposed for being illogical: minorities are beginning to make up the majority. Get used to it. It’s okay and that’s where things were going. We’re all immigrants – thanks White Stripes.

An interesting aside: there was a commercial for Avatar during South Park, which is interesting because last week’s episode made fun of Avatar and showed South Park being really angry that the movie was ripping off something else (I asked what that something else was but nobody knew to tell me).

What’d you think of this episode? Did you like it? What did you think about the 13th season? Which episode was your favorite.

My parents hate South Park. I think a lot of it is a generation gap problem. Yes its offensive, I know, but a lot of the things our parents watch are also offensive. A lot of it might have to do with the cartoons they grew up with. Looney Tunes never pushed the limits and it was just as offensive, if not worse, than South Park. The older cartoons were just racist, sexist, and bias towards certain groups of people. They openly made fun of different cultures and got away with it. South Park bring awareness to social issues, without taking a side in most cases, and doesn’t offend cultures. A lot of these perceptions about the show come form people who have never watched it. Yeah, I’m aware of the language on the show and the sexual references and on and on. The big point though is if you watch the program with an open mind instead of being scared off by “dirty” words, then you’ll find it’s one of the smarter shows on television.

None of my peers really need to hear this because we’ve now grown up watching the show and we’ve all made references back to it. everything from “Cheesy Poofs” to “They took our jobs!” have become huge pieces of our pop culture and it makes us laugh plenty, but what sets the creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, aside from other comedy writers in their category – is their message. While it’s sometimes subtle and told through an analogy, every episode of South Park has a point. No one is safe from their territory either: Christianity, Scientology, Biker Gangs, High School Musical, Pokemon, The Election, and everything else you can possibly imagine. They use satire to make you think about these topics without directly bashing them or attacking people’s values.

You can watch any episode over all thirteen seasons online. If you have never watched the show I can’t push you hard enough to at least give it a try. It will probably offend you if you’re one of the people I’m directing this at who have never watched the show. Watch it with an open mind and try to appreciate it for what it is – satire. If you can’t comprehend this then you shouldn’t watch TV at all and you should start reading books more often so maybe someday you’ll be able to enjoy the art of subtlety.

I suppose the upside to this link, for everyone who already watches the show, is if you love it and you want to relive some of the classics without buying the DVDs – you now have access to them all. Here’s a list of some of the “swings they’ve taken recently”

Cartman tries to change the word “faggot” to mean annoying people who ride Harley’s

Kanye West can’t figure out why he’s a “Gay Fish” and his ego gets the best of him

Cartman wants in on the pirate crisis in Somalia

Butters tries his best at prostitution

The boys start a wrestling federation and battle with a fanatic of the real sport

A pinewood derby match gives us first contact

The economy is angered and we must console it

This is all from the current season, and it’s just a few issues amongst lots of other topics. Already offended? Good. Maybe that’s what you need. We all need to drift out of our comfort zones here and there. How do we expect to grow individually if we don’t hear the opinions of others. Being blind to the other side doesn’t make your side stronger. ignorance is less than bliss and it’s time you all did something about it. Am I saying get your news from South Park? Lord no! I’m saying it will help you see things for what they are – comedy. Nothing is so serious that we can’t look back on it and laugh. It’s the best medicine for a reason. Give it a chance, remove your expectations and just embrace it for what it is. I’m not calling South Park the final destination but it can be an important stepping stone for you as an individual – to fuel your character and to learn whats really important. Well, in this case, which I think is equally as important, it can teach you that some of the things we dwell on aren’t quite as important as we make them seem.

Is pop culture nothing more than a safe haven for the left? It is certainly easy to believe that, however, it isn’t true.

“Democrats piss me off,” are the words uttered by South Park’s most anti-politically correct character, Eric Cartman. This can be seen as an overview for what drives the social and political commentary of the hit show. Over the years creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have found a way to weigh in on every aspect of politics and pop culture that no one else would touch with a ten foot stick.

Last week’s South Park took on the recent issues surrounding the scandalous ACORN. One of the show’s most ignorant characters, Butters, starts a “kissing company.” He sells kisses to fellow students for money. His small business turns into a prostitution ring, however, he is too boneheaded to realize it. Knowing he needs assistance, he goes to the local ACORN office.

Of course, they help him out. We even find out that some of the ACORN employees in the show are his customers.

We know that ACORN has not been covered by many media outlets but was widely reported on FOX News. By acknowledging the scandal the show’s creators prove they follow FOX News or internet journalist Andrew Breitbart. While the other networks tried to downplay ACORN’s corruption, South Park has clearly picked sides.

View the South Park segment on ACORN here.

Last Thursday night Sean Hannity responded to the episode on Fox News:

“I think that’s what they mean by making lemonade when somebody gives you a lemon.”

This is something South Park has done for years in taking shots at 9/11 truthers, radical environmentalists, Scientologists and the Hollywood elite.

While it is easy to dismiss many television shows as vocal avenues for the left, South Park continues to prove that it does not adhere to that standard. The ACORN episode is a perfect example as they are not afraid to attack anyone, even the left that is usually protected in popular culture.

Earlier this year I wrote a piece titled “The South Park Generation” in which I discussed the politics of the show and why it resonates with young conservatives. One of the biggest reasons that South Park is popular with Generation Y is because it constantly attacks the hyper-politically correct aspects of our culture. It just so happens that most of the PC garbage they go after comes from the left, which is why young conservatives relate to the show.

I will continue to follow South Park as they take on the Left through their cutting edge social commentary. The series will be called “Generation South Park” as the politics of this show provide a great intellectual window into Generation Y Conservatism.

If I were a ho, I’d definitely want Butters as my bitch. Man, events spiraled out of control so quickly on this show. And yet Butters was in complete control the whole time. I loved how he stayed his kind and sweet self, and yet he fully embraced the lingo of the street pimp.

“Yes, I understand what you are saying. You don’t have to keep asking me.”

Wow, was that hilarious, because I’ve heard so many people from urban areas overuse the expression “You know what I’m saying.” So subtle, but brilliant. We didn’t have girls in my grade school selling their kisses for five dollars (well it wouldn’t have been that high back then anyway), but I can see why Butters saw it as a lucrative business. I was proud of him that he let those bitches go free and independent when he realizes he’s denying his girls love.

Still, he got them low-income housing opportunities via ACORN before he shut down, so that’s to be commended.

On the other end of the spectrum, we had Sgt. Yates of the South Park police force (a man) going undercover as a prostitute to try and track down this mysterious prostitution ring that suddenly cropped up in South Park. He also proved himself to be the worst undercover agent ever.

Someone should mention to them that you can arrest them as soon as they pay you. You don’ t have to go through with whatever depraved sexual act they’re paying for first. Even though you know it was coming, it was still funny every time.

Except for the last time, when it was beyond ridiculous even for South Park. Yates winds up falling in love with his pimp, marrying him and doesn’t spring the badge and gun on him until their first anniversary?! I don’t even want to know how he was performing sexually with these men … I really don’t.

South Park is my favourite television show of all time. It is hilarious, smart, witty and just pure genius.

I currently own nine seasons and am waiting patiently for more to be released here in Australia. I can’t get enough South Park. Each episode is original and funny in it’s own way. Matt Stone and Trey Parker have minds capable of comedic brilliance.

I love the way Trey and Matt aren’t afraid to go anywhere with South Park. They’ve made episodes condemning Scientology, ridiculing directors such as Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas, laughing at AIDS and even have an episode showing the Prophet Mohammed. I love how they make each episode relevant to current events at the time, but I can watch an episode made in 2000 and still laugh my ass off.

When I watch South Park, I laugh before the show even begins. I can’t contain myself. I can watch episodes over and over and still find myself in tears with laughter.

Basically, what I’m trying to say is, South Park is AWESOME and if you haven’t watched it before, you are missing out on life. If you don’t love South Park then you are lame. And if you do love South Park, talk to me about it in the comments!

(Season 13, Episode

This has to be one of Stone and Parker’s most genius episodes yet. As a response to the summer of celebrity deaths, the duo came up with a concept addressing absolutely all of them. Trapped in purgatory, none of them can move on until all of them are ready to take that next step.

Which means they must not only accept that they are dead, but also they must be at peace with their lives. That could be a problem.

It’s never too late to do a Sixth Sense, and using Ike as the little boy who “sees dead celebrities … all the time” is a master stroke. Ike is one of the most entertaining characters on the show. And that opening scene of him running through his house shouting out celebrity names as they haunted him was hilarious!

I especially enjoyed that, even dead, Billy Mays continued to pitch products. But the best product of the night was Chipotlaway. Kyle could never get his head into the game because he couldn’t stop wondering why you would eat something that makes you get blood in your underwear. I’m going to have to back him on this.

Mays’ best moment came when he announced that in two easy steps he could get over this chair and whup some ass. But Mays wasn’t the reason the souls couldn’t move on. Of course, it was Michael Jackson.

Jackson has been a constant source of ribbing by the duo since South Park premiered twelve years ago. It was definitely fitting that they honored his passing in some way. I just didn’t expect it to be by having him possess Ike’s body.

The sight of Ike grabbing his crotch and doing Jackson’s moves and little noises he makes when he sings was hilarious. Even funnier was that the only way to put Jackson at peace was to give him what he always wanted in life: to be accepted as a little white girl.

So Ike wound up in a beauty pageant and Jackson got his peace and Ike came back wondering what the hell he was wearing. As bizarre as this is to say, I think that this episode of South Park was a great tribute to all of these celebrities, even Michael Jackson. It honored their contributions to our social consciousness, and addressed every single one of them at least once throughout the episode.

It also reminded me of just how many there were in just a few months. I know notable people are dying all the time, but it really does seem like the number of famous people passing this summer was unusually high.

After many months of suffering, South Park fans finally got their fix last night — and what a fix it was! The controversial toon kicked off the second half of its 13th season by targetting this past summer’s bevy of dead celebrities, including everyone from Michael Jackson (as the beloved Mr. Jefferson, of course) and TV pitchman/coke-fiend Billy Mays.

Here’s the basic plot: In a nod to The Sixth Sense (Trey Parker and Matt Stone just love M. Knight Shyamalan) Kyle’s adopted Canadian brother, Ike, begins seeing dead celebrities. As the story unfolds, we learn that all the celebrities who died this summer are stuck in Purgatory, as Wacko Jacko refuses to come to terms with his own death. The remedy for this? MJ possesses Ike’s body and enters a beauty pageant, so that the world can finally accept him as a little white girl.

I have no doubt this episode will be all over the news tomorrow, and everyone will have their own opinion as to whether or not Matt and Trey went too far (again). But before we all start running our mouths (I loved it to freakin’ pieces) let’s see what Billy Mays’ son thought of his father’s portrayal on the show. Here are a few of his thoughts, via his official Twitter:

I’m seriously honored that my dad is involved in this South Park Ep. He’d have gotten a kick out of this.
Highlight for me.. My dad’s ghost ‘pitching’ his threat to Patrick Swayze’s ghost after Pat told him to shut up.. LOL

So, honestly, if Billy Mays’ son is OK with the jokes then everyone else can just quit their bitching right now. Besides, it’s pretty obvious the only people who should be offended by tonight’s episode are fans of Chipotle. I’ve dined on the meaty goodness many times in my life and not once have I ended the night with blood in my underwear.

Matt and Trey are my heroes and after watching tonight’s mid-season premiere of “South Park” I’m ready to get a shirt made that says just that. The premiere episode entitled, “Dead Celebrities” focuses on Kyle’s little Canadian brother Ike, who is being haunted by the ghost of television infomercial demigod, Billy Mays.

But wait! There’s more!! This episode was entirely devoted to showcasing EVERY celebrity that died this summer, and because they create the episodes so quickly no one is exempt, David Carradine with a noose around his neck wearing fishnets, Natasha Richardson in ski gear, not even “Point Break’s” own freshly laid to rest Patrick Swayze or MTV’s DJ. AM. Alas, it was the ghost of Michael Jackson and his shrill cries of “you’re ignorant” and “tee hees” that made my eyes rain.

With a brilliant subplot tying together ‘mexican food to-go superking’s’ Chipotle and Billy Mays’ newest product “Chipotl-Away“, and a child’s beauty pageant ,they took no prisoners. I cried with laughter at the absurdity of the lady from Poltergeist being thrown out of a hospital window and exploding on the ground after the ghost of Michael Jackson calls her ignorant, possesses the EKG machine, and with a sonic boom, puts an end to her story line.

It is always an amazing treat tuning in week after week to see how far Matt and Trey are willing to take things. The pop culture commentary is hit on the nose in ways that Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert will never be able to replicate. It’s so perfectly gauche, witty, tasteless and perfectly executed. Enough of me polishing their knobs. Do yourself a favor and head over to southparkstudios.com and see what you’re missing.

He said:

“The people screaming on this side, and the people screaming on that side are the same people.” After watching South Park, “all in all, at the end of the day they’ll be a little more Zen Buddhist.”

The Husband:

While we, the children of Saint Clare, have found the time to write about many of the biggest shows on television (and even some small ones), there is only so much time and energy we can spend on this site. The truth is, we watch a whole lot more than what ends up on the site, and since I watch most of these on my own and yet never find the ability to write about them, their absence is mostly my fault. But no matter. For those that fall through the cracks, I have here a grab bag of the 30+ shows I watch in addition to whatever ends up on the site. These are the ones that slipped through the cracks. And hell, I’m sure there are more I’m forgetting (and also not even bothering writing about, which tend to fall under instructional/educational stuff like anything on Discovery), so if you think I’ve forgotten something, please let me know. (And no, I don’t watch any CSI or L&O shows, so don’t even try to get all up in my grill.) Here they are, the missing shows of the 2008-2009 television season, in alphabetical order.

24

I really should have written at least some criticism on this season, but work piled up and I simply didn’t have the time. It started off as the most intelligent season with some of the most compelling political questions being thrown around (welcome to the show finally, “debate on torture”), but by the fourth time Tony twisted his alliance and Jack was infected with the disease, I kind of stopped caring. Great first half of the season, though, and I think Renee is the best new character in a very long time.

Adult Swim (Xavier: Renegade Angel / Superjail! / Squidbillies / The Drinky Crow Show / Metalocalypse / Delocated / Robot Chicken / Etc.)

Thank you, young people of Adult Swim (who I have spent some time with, don’t forget) for freaking my mind week after week, and giving alternative comedy a major boost in America. And for freaking out my wife.

A beacon of normalcy in a world of wackiness.

Better Off Ted

It took me a couple episodes to latch onto the tone, but once I did I simply couldn’t get enough from this latest product of the mad mind of Victor Fresco. Check out some episodes online, then watch Andy Richter Controls the Universe (his previous show), and I guarantee you some of the oddest network comedy in a very long time. I still think Portia DeRossi is trying to hard, though, and should take a page from the book of Fresco mainstay Jonathan Slavin.

Castle

Bring it on, Nathan Fillion. Hypnotize me with your nostrils and your addictive but borderline-stupid mystery writer-cum-detective series. (Although how weird was that Judy Reyes episode? What the hell, Carla Turk?)

The Celebrity Apprentice 2

So sue me, I liked Joan Rivers. And the addition of the phrase “Whore Pit Vipers” to the television lexicon.

Celebrity Rehab (Sober House) with Dr. Drew

So help me, I can’t stop watching. It’s just a disaster. I will say, though, that I like the drama in the rehab far more than the sober house, as the latter seems to exist simply to destroy any progress the celebrities made in rehab. And now having seen all three of his seasons of Taxi, Jeff Conaway’s fall from grace is fishbowl television at its finest.

Dating in the Dark

Really fun, actually. I hope it gets a second season. I also hope that more matches will be made, and that people stop being massive failures.

Dirty Sexy Money

Everything I needed to say about the failure of the second season of this show can be found on this blog, and it ended its truncated run by turning itself inside-out by revealing that the show’s central mystery, who killed Peter Krause’s father, was a bust since he wasn’t dead after all. What the hell, Dirty Sexy Money? Oh well, your cancellation made room in Krause’s schedule for the much anticipated (by me) adaptation of Parenthood coming to NBC mid-season.

The Goode Family

It took a few episodes to find its footing, but by the end of its sped-up summer run, I was a major fan of the latest Mike Judge effort. (R.I.P. King of the Hill.) Vastly misunderstood by viewers who only watched the first episode, it, just like KOTH, found a middle ground between conservative America and liberal America and found the ability to make fun of both without drawing blood, choosing to love instead of hate. Some of the voice cast was misused (why was my beloved Linda Cardellini in the cast?), but as a Berkeley native, I had a blast relishing in mocking the stereotypes of my own people while rediscovering what it is I love so much about them. The bull dykes were also two of the most original characters of the season.

One Earth isn't just a grocery store, it's a way of life.

The Great American Road Trip

Any show that has two contestants debating over which is more correct, “y’all” or “youse,” gets major points in my book. A nice and forgettable summer trifle after a long, way-too-hot day. Silly, yes, but I can’t say it was bad. And it was a definite improvement over the similar family-based season of The Amazing Race. (I’m sure The Soup is really grateful for this show, too.)

Heroes

Oh god, kill me now. Volume 4 was a marked improvement over #3, for sure, but I just don’t care about anybody anymore. And yet I feel that I need to keep watching. It’s too late to give up now. There was one great episode this season, though, and that was the flashback one surrounding Angela Petrelli’s stint at a mutant internment camp. Why can’t they all be this good?

Howie Do It

Yeah, I watched it. Shut the fuck up. About one-third of it was funny, and as I watched it on Hulu at work, it’s not like I wasted any of my own time. Howie Mandel is savvier than you think, but I wish he would return to his wilder roots.

How’s Your News

This Parker-Stone produced MTV show revolving around reporters who are developmentally delayed confused the hell out of me initially, but once I realized there wasn’t a mean bone in its body it became a warm bit of fun. I want a second season, dammit. These are some of the most joyful television subjects I’ve ever seen.

I Survived a Japanese Game Show

Better than the first season, but I’m still glad I only watch this online while doing something else.

In the Motherhood

Worst opening credit sequence of the year. Some pretty funny material hidden underneath unfunny slapstick. Horatio Sanz got thin. Megan Mullally couldn’t find a rhythm. I still think Cheryl Hines is oddly hot.

Lie to Me

I unfortunately didn’t start watching this until July, and I wish I hadn’t waited so long. While gimmicky to a fault and not nearly as intelligent as it pretends it is, this Tim Roth vehicle about an FBI specialist who studies the subtleties of the face (OF THE FACE) is clever, compelling and well drawn. I’m not sure about the addition of Mekhi Phifer’s character, but we’ll see how it works out next season, especially with Shield creator Shawn Ryan at the helm of season two.

Life

This cancellation reallllly hurts. One of the unsung gems from the 2007-2008 television, this, the smartest network cop show in recent memory, took its great season one energy and hit the second season with all it had and came up with a compelling, hilarious, devilishly clever and gleefully violent run that was only marred by a major cast shift during the final few episodes. (I’m looking at you, Gabrielle Union. Your presence was what I like to call a massive failure.) A Zen-obsessed cop recently released from prison after serving over a decade for a murder he did not commit, this show had the best cases of them all. It also gave me one of my favorite hours of television of the year in an episode that revolved around a seductive assassin, fertilizer and pigeon aficionados. And at least the major serialized storyline (who framed Damien Lewis and why) got paid off in a major way thanks to the ever-reliable Garret Dillahunt.

My Boys

Putting PJ and Bobby together was a great idea, but your nine-episode seasons are too short to gain any momentum, and the spring training season finale was a bust.

Nitro Circus

Moronic glee.

Numb3rs

Man, did they put Charlie through the ringer. First, he nearly gets his brother killed with a miscalculation on his part, he questions his own validity as a mathematician and then Amita gets kidnapped just as he decides that he wants to marry her. Otherwise, another fine, if somewhat uneventful, of this show that never captured the glory of its über-nerdy first season. Also, thanks for all the great guest star work, but sometimes it gets laid on a little too thick, such as in “Sneakerhead” which brought together Bruno Campos, Patrick Bauchau, Dr. Edison from Bones and Eve. (And points for making the Liz Warner character actually bearable. I fucking hated her in season 4.

Privileged

So apparently the CW thought that their best idea ever was to get rid of this show, the smartest show on the UPN/WB merger since the Buffyverse, one that was technically pulling in bigger numbers than 90210, one that was a delight to watch and deeply addictive, and make room for what is sure to be one of 2009-2010’s worst new offerings, Melrose Place. I gotta tell ya, this cancellation hurts. While I wrote recaps and reviews of the episodes way into its freshman (and only) season, the looming axe, as well as a more heavily serialized structure, turned me off from writing on the final stretch of episodes, and I told myself that I’d only recap them if the show came back. Lo and behold, another Joanna Garcia vehicle has gone down the tubes. I’ll miss you oh so dearly, Ms. Too-Smart-For-The-CW Palm Beach satirical melodrama known as Privileged.

I hate to say this, guys, but I think Robert Buckley might be a showkiller. And that's sad, because he's so damn pretty.

Rescue Me

I thought it was a great season, and thanks to an extended number of episodes (it didn’t air in 2008 thanks to the writer’s strike), the show was able to focus much of its energy on pages-long dialogue-happy battle-of-wits in nearly episode, which to be is melodrama heaven. Gone is the maudlin tone, returned is all the comic energy, and the stories seem to actually progress instead of just flopping around like a dying fish. Leary and Tolan deserve major praise for bringing the show back up to snuff. And now having seen all of Newsradio, I love any chance I get to watch Maura Tierney, although I’m still not going to watch ER. (I am proud to have only seen three episodes of that show ever, being a Chicago Hope fan.) Special shot-out to the Sean cancer storyline, if only to allow Broadway actor Steven Pasquale (husband of Tony winner Laura Benanti) the opportunity to belt out some songs in a handful of hallucination scenes.

Samantha Who?

One of the biggest upsets of the last two years was the rise and fall of this light-hearted, occasionally gut-busting amnesia sitcom that started off the talk of the town, only to waste away its final episodes after the conclusion of the actual television season. Ending on a shitty cliffhanger (Sam’s parents are getting divorced, so Mom is going to live with you and your formerly-estranged-but-now-love-of-your-life lover), we nevertheless found out who caused the accident that brought about Sam’s amnesia, Jennifer Esposito finally made it with the towel boy, and Melissa McCarthy continued to be one of the brightest stars of the year.

Scrubs

Like Privileged, I hesitated to continue writing due to the threat of its cancellation, but now it’s continuing on into yet another season (albeit with some major changes), so I really have no reason to stop writing about it. But let’s just say that while the hurry-up to conclude its many disparate storylines often felt rushed (those two Bahama episodes felt especially odd), the conclusion to J.D.’s years-in-the-telling tale was a lovely way to conclude the season. (No props for the awful awful Peter Gabriel song that accompanied his final walk down the hallway, as laughably bad as it was when I heard it in the remake of Shall We Dance?)

The Shield

I don’t have to tell you how amazing the final season was. Watch it. Seriously. You owe it to yourself to experience one of the hardest hitting cop shows of all time. Like The Wire, a Greek tragedy hammered into modern-day policework with some of the most finely drawn characters around. And oh man, did those final three episodes pack a major punch. Ouch, indeed.

Southland

Quite a bit like The Shield, really, had it followed Michael Jace’s beat cop instead of the Strike Team. A little too dour at times for me to really give a crap, and the sprawling ensemble needs to be cut down (which is what I hear it’s doing for the second season), but this L.A.-centered procedural has a lot going for it, not least of which its pitch-perfect direction. (I especially dig the long shots, including my favorite, which involved a cabin and a K9 unit bringing down a perp.)

Way better than dating Marissa Cooper.

Surviving Suburbia

A sitcom in serious need of finding one tone and sticking with it, this sometimes-sweet-sometimes-brutally-cruel suburban comedy worked as well as it did because of Saget as well as G. Hannelius’ performance as the precocious daughter. Still, all the jokes about disabled people, pregnant teenagers and strip clubs really didn’t mesh together with the clichés of the genre.

Survivor: Tocantins

I love Survivor, but this was one of the most boring seasons in its ten-year run. I don’t think I gave a shit about one person, and I simply couldn’t find anything compelling to write about. A waste of a good location.

True Beauty

The right person won, the losers got (mostly) schooled in this trick show designed to expose the douchery involved in modeling, Ashton Kutcher made another heroin-like show, and I concern myself for months with how they can pull the trick off a second time in the next season.

The Unusuals

When grading a cop show, I tend to focus on three things — the tone, the characters and the cases. A bizarre, pessimistic yet comedic take on all those wacky cops we’ve seen throughout the years all thrown together (one is deathly afraid of…death, one has a brain tumor, one talks in the third person, one is a closeted socialite, etc.) pushed into some remarkably dark territory, The Unusuals had tone and characters down pat, but suffered at the hands of some DOA storylines. But oh man, did the tone ever make up for most of the show’s shortcomings. Great ensemble cast, too, although I would have recast Eddie Alvarez.

Rather unusual.

Worst Week

A breezy and often hilarious slapstick comedy based off of a British hit, it could never regain its momentum after moving away from the initial “week” of the title. Kyle Bornheimer is a true find and made the more unbearable misunderstandings and embarrassing moments of the show (of which there were many) all the more palatable. I’m not the biggest fan of comedy based around humiliations, but this show found a likeable ability to have its characters not completely despise each other at every moment. This was, to say the least, very refreshing. Big points for giving me the biggest network TV laugh of the year (when Bornheimer wakes up his brother-in-law only to be thought a murderer) but major negative points for pushing back a major character-based episode into a weekend spot months after the show had already ended its run.
