With Christmas just around the corner and the holiday bug biting many around the world, I thought it

With Christmas just around the corner and the holiday bug biting many around the world, I thought it would be remiss not to post about brands and their holiday undertakings. Whether it’s about Hanukah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, or simply getting together with loved ones the common thread brands are highlighting tends to emphasize some sort of spirit. Taking advantage of the holiday spirit the general retailer, Canadian Tire, took to its agency Tribal DDB Toronto, Canada to create an interaction with two folds: to promote the store’s Christmas decorations and gifts in time for holiday shopping and to show Christmas spirit on the net in real time.

Tribal DDB Toronto, Canada took Canadian Tire’s goal to increase sales and “wish everyone happy holiday” and gave them something unexpected. From December 12th to 26th, Canadian Tire has hoisted a Christmas tree that is powered solely by holiday spirit broadcasted online. Housed in Toronto’s Union Station, the Christmas Spirit tree is a live experience in which a giant tree is illuminated by Christmas related messages posted online throughout Canada. Technology director of the project, Joe Dee, explains that the tree is composed of over 3,000 programmable LED lights whose color and intensity is powered from numeric values associated with online keyword posts. So if you’re in Canada and you tweet, update, blog, or a news article goes online mentioning anything about Christmas or holiday activities, a bulb will light the tree. For those both in and outside of Toronto, a website is up to let you watch the experience as it happens. With a video of the tree powered by Livestream, you can catch it in action as if you were there. Don’t have access to the internet but you want a light to flash in your honor? Then you can send a text message to 70734 to get your shine on. Not in Canada, don’t have access to the net, and you can’t send a text? Then maybe you can just imagine what it looks like. Here’s a tip: it’s bright.

To check it out for yourself, stop by Toronto Union Station or visit the site. Both the tree and the stream are live from 5am to 12am EST so that gives you time to check it out whether you’re on your way to work or heading out for night out with friends.

Happy holidays!
