DJ FREEDOM

www.mixcraftmedia.wordpress.com (01)

Of course I am my own favorite DJ. I listen to my own mixes, play them for others, remix a multitude of songs weekly and although my releases are not being played by every DJ or radio station, the respect by many is there. You should also know I didn’t get into this for the status just the respect and the music.

One of the DJ standards

DJ culture has long been the backbone of nightlife: if you have the right DJ spinning it can be the difference between a lot of folks sitting around talking over drinks or crowds rushing in to hear the best music-regardless of the atmosphere (although flashing lights are nice).

My list is just that-my opinion, lumped in with the millions of others. Only consider these guys not just because I say so but I have heard them all spin LIVE and I have at least one or more of their mixes. Ahh, now we separate ourselves from all the other bloggers online. Yes indeed!

Check them out. You’ve probably danced to one or more of their tracks if you have gone to a party at ANY major city in the U.S. Or how about the last wedding reception. Or the New Year’s Eve party. Their records are everywhere in EVERY DJ’s crate and their fame doesn’t stop there. You can hear them spin live if you live in NYC, or attend the WMC in Miami each year in March. Among my all-time favorites. Just ask Fatman Scoop!

He claims NJ as home, runs one of the most respected super club brands in the world in NYC known as Pacha, and does residencies in Miami (where I hear he has been living for a while), Ibiza (THE dance music capital of the world) and endless other places. He also has a hot dance label, Subliminal and one of the most annoying dance anthems ever, “I Like To Move It” under the name Reel 2 Real. Still a key player in radio, club gigging, and the occasional mixtape, this guy has always been one of my favorite DJs…and is a force that no other DJ in the game will deny. She plays a party-oriented style of hip-hop, R&B, dancehall/reggae and club that is always upbeat and floor-ready. I’ve had the pleasure of hiring her for a party recently and she brought the house down-more than all of the DJs on the bill (we won’t say any names). He has probably been doing it longer, but Danny gets props for being credible for keeping the marathon sets alive and well. For DJs who play 2 hours and think they are doing something for all the money they get, take note: this is a guy (like myself *ahem*) who will play for 12 hours and longer.

I originally wrote a rant on Facebook about this subject and decided to expand on it here.

So many people have asked questions regarding Philippine tribal tattoo patterns. Where can patterns be found and what do they mean? While there are some patterns to source, a majority have been lost over time as well as their meanings. Like all tattoo cultures, Philippine tribal tattoos represent; social stature, community, beautification and at times within the context of headhunting and raiding…have you taken a head lately or raided another village? You have!? Damn, you are “CORE”!

Obviously you cannot tattoo certain patterns, as they are sacred to the remaining few indigenous groups found in the highlands of the Philippine Archipelago. Should you choose to tattoo yourself with some of these patterns, do it in an honorable manner that pays respect and homage.

Yes, I have Philippine patterns on my forearms and upper arm, they are a mix of Northern and Southern Philippine tribal motifs. I chose the patterns based on their beauty and representation of flowing rivers, rice terraces and lightning. For me, they each represent subsistence living, rebirth through flowing water and the power of nature. It is my personal homage to my homeland and to those few who braved centuries of colonization and managed to keep their cultural heritage alive and vibrant.

Some Filipino patterns are similar to Polynesian patterns but are not the same, and to twist it and mix it up like halo-halo, dishonors both of our cultures and really pisses off the Polynesians. Trust me, it does, especially if you try to pass it off as strictly Filipino rather than a hybrid.

Unlike Polynesian tattoos where you could at times trace one’s geneology, you cannot create/recreate some BS that represents Filipino geneology based on a Malayo-Polynesian connection. The term defines a linguistic branch of the Austronesian languages and not culture. Last time I looked, Sinkil doesn’t look anything like Hula or Tahitian.

I am certain that not every single Polynesian pattern has retained its meaning from the original if there is a meaning at all, the same goes with Philippine patterns. Triangles are sometimes just triangles but look really pleasing when you repeat them. Furthermore, the squiggly lines could have been a knee jerk reaction from an insect bite but the “tapper” had to keep going.

The Philippines has such a great textile, pottery and carving culture. Why not make that connection instead? Help preserve these patterns and motifs and truly honor what is ours. Bring them to the forefront and show the world the beauty of our art. Are we not good enough to stand with other tattoo cultures? Is our culture so devalued that we need to seek it in other cultures or make up BS to elevate ourselves? Does it really matter what a pattern means? Making a connection to one’s heritage IS important and should go much deeper than a tattoo needle and ink.

Most artists these days have heard of and respect Horiyoshi III, the world renowned tattoo artist, but how much do you know about the art he creates? Many other artists work by hand and there are many ways to mark without a machine.

Tebori is the traditional Japanese hand tattooing method, practiced by Horiyoshi III and the select few who possess the skill required. It is said that this method can create finer lines and more gradual shading than a machine.

There is a lot involved in becoming a true Tebori artist. The long road starts with a formal apprenticeship living with and learning from the master. There aren’t very many Tebori artists in the United States, but we tracked down Horisuzu out of Black Rabbit Tattoo in Bend, OR. Horisuzu started as a Western tattoo artist, but wanted to learn traditional Japanese tattooing, including Tebori. He sought out an apprenticeship, saying “After over a year of consideration and close observation I think perhaps Ryugen Sensei saw something in me, in my heart maybe that he felt was worth taking in. This is how I found my way into the Japanese tattoo culture. I am very grateful to my master Ryugen Sensei of Tokyo Japan for bestowing upon me the honor of my title Horisuzu”.

His advice to an artist looking to learn traditional Japanese Tebori is to “seek out a master to study under; it is not something to attempt without guidance from a master. The Japanese tattoo encompasses all aspects of Japanese culture therefore great care should be taken in study of Japanese culture and arts.”

The tradition of Japanese tattoo is vast, making it a daunting field to enter. Horisuzu said, “It is hard to become a practitioner of the Japanese tattoo in a traditional sense if they have not grown up in Japanese culture. The Japanese tattoo is actually very cryptic. Each motif is a hidden language based on culture, history, religion and oral mythology. This is something that books and research alone can not translate. Immersion in Japanese culture and a traditional Japanese apprenticeship is necessary.”

Japanese tattoo is rooted in tradition and the spirit is contagious. Horisuzu says, “I feel deeply connected and proud of the traditions. My genuine love for the Japanese tattoo coupled with the lessons learned with my master make me very respectful of the history and people that came before me. I believe that we should all honor traditions and the people that paved the way for us. Tattooing with no connection is very unwise. The tattoo will have no value to that person, it has no spirit. A tattoo with no spirit looks poor in my eyes.”

Getting the tattoo is also a long process. Once a design is agreed upon, the artist will do the outline, often freehand, in one session. Steel needles are used, tied in rows, stacked or alone to a long handle, traditionally of bamboo, but with the rise of sterilization practices, now of steel or titanium so it can be autoclaved. The needles are dipped in ink and pressed rapidly into the skin to create some of the finest lines and most gradual shading.

You can find more about Horisuzu’s work at blackrabbittattoo.com

There are many types of hand poking and hand tapping besides Tebori. Cory Ferguson out of Good Point Tattoos near Toronto uses a method called handpicking that uses a single needle to insert ink one dot at a time. While this is much more tedious, he says, “Without having a machine to contend with, there are far less variables. There are so many fewer obstacles between your finger tips and the skin, so the ink does exactly what you intended it to do.”

This method seems easier to try than others, even machine tattooing. Cory said, “Once you put it out there, it’s so much more accessible for someone to try their hand at, so you find that many people around you will give it a shot, especially people who’ve never tattooed at all before. I get asked how to do it a lot, and get people coming in showing me the hand poking they’ve done on their own foot.” Even though it is easy to try, it isn’t the easiest thing to make money at. “I’ve seen some people try to work only by hand, some have succeeded and some have failed. It’s a difficult way to go, that’s for sure. Finding people who want to sit through the extra time and pay for it can be very tricky. Hand work is like 1% of what I do.”

Despite the cost and time, many customers are more than willing to sit for the experience of a hand worked tattoo. Cory says, “People who choose the lengthier handwork seem to do it because they are curious to see what it will be like to have a tattoo done in such in unusual and primitive manner. And some times people choose it because they’ve had it done before and prefer the quiet, chilled out atmosphere that hand poking provides. Clients are much more likely to fall asleep during handwork. This is why I sometimes prefer the handwork, it’s nice just to switch it up once in a while and have a really mellow, relaxed tattoo session – it’s almost meditative.”

Cory isn’t worried about the method being lost to history. He says, “I don’t think it’s going anywhere, and that’s probably most of what the appeal is. It’s the same way of putting ink into skin that was done thousands of years ago. The whole point of it is a primitive, raw, tribal sort of experience. The designs will get tighter and the quality of work might improve, but to me the feeling I get when hand poking is all about getting back to basics rather than pushing into the future. It’s an homage to the absolute beginnings of what we call tattoo.”

To see more of Cory’s work check out corytattoos.com.

Even another method, out of Polynesia, uses a rake-like tool that is tapped with a stick. The lines created are a little thicker than with a machine, but it isn’t a detriment because tribal designs rarely use fine lines. The designs are drawn on by hand and tapped in during the same sitting.
Sulu’ape Angela is the first known woman in history to learn the hand-tap technique. Her teacher is Su’a Sulu’ape Petelo, the top traditional Hand-Tap Tattoo Artist in the World. She became interested in hand tap as a child from looking at a National Geographic article. She saw tattoos being hand tapped at a conference in Tahiti and started working as an assistant, stretching the skin for the artist. She said watching the artists work she was awe-struck, “I sat and watched the patterns flow from his hands. He drew no patterns, just tapped the designs.”

After that experience she didn’t pursue becoming an artist herself, believing it was taboo. “I just wanted to watch. I was shocked when Petelo wanted to teach me.” She learned the language and ceremonies and served as a traditional apprentice. Her advice is to, “make sure you have gone through the respects, and find someone who has the blessing to teach. Pay your dues.”

People are intrigued by the history and tradition involved in getting a tattoo. Most clients choose hand tap tattoos for the experience. Sulu’ape Angela said, “They do it for the awe factor, or they went to a region where it was done or they want a more profound experience.” It doesn’t hurt that hand tap is said to bleed less and heal faster than machine work.

Aside from a hiccup converting to autoclavable tools, she says that she is getting more and more hand tap work as it gets more spotlight. “Tribal is becoming popular. People who go the tribal direction, tend to want to go further. People are becoming more interested in doing it the ancient way.”

Been really hard to find any inspiration today for something to write.
For the first time in a long while Monday has been very dull and eventless…crap.
Well maybe it is because of the weather, only rain, wetness and cold winds, isnt it really time for some snow or something right about now?
I miss the good old winters with tons of snow, that really gave both the coy winter mood but also a sense of christmas feeling.
I love to play this timeless Queen song ” A Winter’s Tale“, it really tells quite a different ‘winter’s tale’, because partly there is no mention of snow or christmassy stuff, but then again it sounds very warm and fuzzy, almost romantic in my ears, especially at 1: 45 where the guitar solo starts…if I close my eyes I can just see infront of me a romantic dance with a beautiful woman infront of a fireplace.

Feels like it’s time for a new poem soon?
Maybe this lack of inspiration, grief, boredom and longing is the material I need?

Im planning on getting one of my ears pierced, been a thought lingering for a while now.
I really would like to have a cool tribal earring, they look pretty cool.
What do you think, do you think I’d fit with one of these?

It is commonly assumed by the public that Communism (also called “Marxism”) was created

It is commonly assumed by the public that Communism (also called “Marxism”) was created by the German philosopher Karl Marx. Nothing could be further from the truth. In reality, a young Marx joined the already existing Communist movement and, after publishing several works on the subject of Communism and Capitalism (a term he coined), he became such a central figure that the term “Marxist” became synonymous with the term “Communist”. In much the same way Adam Smith did not create Capitalism but rather created the authoritative work on Capitalism (The Wealth of Nations) and yet is still considered the “founder” of Capitalism.

So who did create Communism?

Like most things in life, there is no short and simple answer. Communism, or at least the primitive ancestor of Communism has existed for thousands of years. At the dawn of man, humans lived in tribes, working together for survival. What one man killed was food for everyone, the spear or hammer made by one person could be used by another. The concept of private-property did not evolve until much later in human history- the reason being that selfishness and individualism simply could not mesh with the harsh realities of the time. One human could not survive on his own, the tribe as a whole could not waste time and energy on creating twenty individual hammers for the twenty men of the tribe when one could be shared just as easily. At the same time, the shared property (combined with the need for everyone to pull their own weight) eliminated any chance of a class system evolving. Without any difference in wealth or workload, society was more or less egalitarian.

So what happened?

As humans became more settled and as the barter system emerged (to be discussed in a later post), shared-property died slowly out and the class system arose. While today the vast majority of hunter-gatherer, pastoral, horticulturalist, and nomadic people groups still live in classless, shared-property systems, the majority of the world’s population began moving away from this system after the establishment of permanent agricultural communities. By the fall of the Roman Empire, most of the world’s people groups practiced Capitalism in some form. It was not until 1516 when Thomas Moore, one of Henry VIII’s closest advisers, published his work Utopia that the concepts of shared-property and classlessness were reintroduced into society (albeit merely as subjects of intellectual discussion). Only in the early 1800s were the concepts developed into actual political/economic theories. Henri de Saint-Simon, a member of the French aristocracy, created several works on the subject and while never implementing them in any major way, laid the foundations for what would become known as the Communist movement. It was not until 1848 when two young Prussian authors named Marx and Engels published their collaborated work The Communist Manifesto that Communism (or “Socialism”- at the time the two words were more or less interchangeable) became a concrete theory. Between the two men’s works, the entire Communist philosophy was created, though it was not implemented until 1871, when Parisian Socialists revolted against the imperial French government and established a short-lived attempt at a Communist government until the Commune (revolutionary government) was wiped out by the French military. While Communist philosophy spread across much of the Western world, there were no major attempts at Communism (baring the establishment of Amish, and later, Hutterite, communities- which are closer to the primitive classless/shared-property practices of various tribal societies). There was a brief attempt at Fabianism (a British Socialist movement), however it quickly devolved into a philosophy, rather than a physical attempt at the implementation of Communism. It was in Russia in 1917 that the first major attempt at a Communist revolution (since the 1871 revolution) took place. The Bolsheviks (the Russian Communist party and revolutionary movement), led by Vladimir Lenin, overthrew the Russian monarchy and the feudal system. After Lenin’s death in 1923, a split ensued that left the USSR divided between the followers of Leon Trotsky (creator and commander of the Red Army and Lenin’s second-in-command) and the followers of Joseph Stalin (the General Secretary of the Communist party). Stalin, despite the efforts of Trotsky and his followers, assumed control and eventually exiled Trotsky in 1929. Under the despotism of Stalin, the USSR, while maintaining the facade of Communism, devolved into a semi-Socialist dictatorship (Trotsky referred to it as a “deformed workers’ state). While Trotskyism grew in popularity in the West, the general Communist movement was marred by the atrocities committed by Stalin and the imperialists policies pursued in Eastern Europe after his death. In China, Mao Zedong led what is generally considered to have been a Communist revolution, but the later policies of Mao have caused many other Communists to doubt whether China could be counted as true Communist country since the mid 1950s. While the revolution itself is considered to be beneficial, the vast majority of modern Communists hold that contemporary China is no more a true Marxist country than Stalin’s USSR (this opinion is viciously opposed by Maoist factions of the Communist movement). While Communism was quickly becoming popular in the third-world (due largely to Western neo-colonialism) the next major advancement of Communism occurred in Cuba after Fidel Castro and Che Guevara defeated the dictator Batista. Once again Communists are split on the subject of whether Cuba may be considered a true Marxist government- much like China, there is popular that the revolution was a positive event but the movement is split on whether Cuba did or did not devolve into another deformed workers’ state. Indeed, the same could be said for almost every country where a Communist revolution has taken place (though almost all Communists are united in believed that North Korea is not a true Communist country). While the collapse of the USSR in 1990 has led many to believe that Communism has been defeated, the Communist movement is technically as active as it ever was.

In short, the history of Communism is far from simple. Much of its history can be interpreted depending on your sympathies and opinions.

Then again, the same could be said for any aspect of history.

Author’s Note: Since Communism isn’t merely an economic or political or social theory but rather a combination of all three, you can see how describing the theory itself- let alone its history- is a massive undertaking that could easily fill a book. Considering my space and the attention span of the reader is sorely limited, I have been forced so skim over the major events of Communist history. Don’t be ticked off at me if I missed some (though if I have something that might be wrong, please correct me).

THIS IS CERTAINLY WORTH READING AND PLEASE, SEND IT AROUND THE WORLD.

This is one of the best explanations of the Muslim terrorist situation I have ever read. His references to past history are accurate and clear. Not long, easy to understand, and well worth the read. The author of this email is Dr. Emanuel Tanay, a well-known and well-respected psychiatrist.

A German’s View on Islam

A man, whose family was German aristocracy prior to World War II, owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism. ‘Very few people were true Nazis,’ he said, ‘but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of the world had come. My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies destroyed my factories…’

We are told again and again by ‘experts’ and ‘talking heads’ that Islam is the religion of peace and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace. Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the specter of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam.

The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history. It is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars worldwide. It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire continent in an Islamic wave. It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honor-kill. It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque. It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals. It is the fanatics who teach their young to kill and to become suicide bombers.

The hard, quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the ’silent majority,’ is cowed and extraneous.

Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. China’s huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.

The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet.

And who can forget Rwanda, which collapsed into butchery. Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were ‘peace loving’?

History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our powers of reason, we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points:

Peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence.

Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don’t speak up, because like my friend from Germany, they will awaken one day and find that the fanatics own them, and the end of their world will have begun.

Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late. As for us who watch it all unfold, we must pay attention to the only group that counts — the fanatics who threaten our way of life.

Lastly, anyone who doubts that the issue is serious and just deletes this email without sending it on, is contributing to the passiveness that allows the problems to expand. So, extend yourself a bit and send this on and on and on! Let us hope that thousands, world-wide, read this and think about it, and send it on – before it’s too late.

All the gurus flying around the country (charging fees to tell us what time it is –with our own watch) use great vernacular: engage, touch, contact, mindshare, differentiate, listen. I made up a couple myself (one was even jacked by a high charging guru): member-centric, memberevolution, memberevolt (don’t want that one).

Seth Godin shares his brilliant ideas on tribes in a variety of mediums, so look him up. If service and retention are your passion – creating a tribe is the first step to being a retention leader. And with a tribe, all of the guru-speak prescribed stuff happens without a studies, checklists, scripts, meetings, process or an invoice. It is ingrained, its an organic occurrence.

Godin refers to tribes as silos of interest that incite curiosity inside the tribe and outside the tribe. Nothing better than receiving a call from a colleague stating, “I’m hearing amazing things…what are you doing over there?”

Going tribal does require an effort in recruiting, one must recruit real well. Surround yourself not with individuals like you, but those that honestly share your ideas. Find the true believers — it takes time, however, they are out there.

Build a culture around the tribe’s ideas and create a movement within your walls, throughout the community, in social media and then the globe.

Commit your passion to the tribe and retention is simply one of the wonderous outcomes.

Enact to customer/member/fan retention, don’t react to it. It’s a culture, not a statistic.
