Hey! Saw a GREAT Pink Floyd tribute band last weekend at the Oviedo Diner, Oviedo, Fla.
Earthbound Misfits – my friend Carol plays the keyboards (tricky stuff). Really great performance even though they had some technical difficulties (electrical outage creamed some of their gear)… If you get the chance – go see ‘em! They do Pink Floyd justice.

The rub against cover bands is that they’re just a bunch of knock-offs making a living off of someone else’s legacy. Some of these bands wind up playing conventions or small festivals, covering everything from Frankie Valli to KC and the Sunshine Band. Others make a grander leap. Bands like Dark Star Orchestra (Grateful Dead) and The Australian Pink Floyd Show (Pink Floyd) take their craft to a much grander scale. They don’t just play great music, they look to recreate the experience of seeing those particular bands live. From the clothing styles to precise guitar tones, those bands will bring seeing the real thing to those who never have, or to those who want to relive what it was like.

Enter Rain, a touring production which succeeds not only in recreating the various eras of Beatles music, but various moments in the history that the Beatles became a part of. Throughout their two afternoon hour show in Greensboro, Rain not only told the story of the Beatles, from Ed Sullivan all the way to the rooftop of Apple Studios, they also told the story of the sixties as well. Using two large video screens,  Rain interspersed old television commercials, news clips, music from other bands of the time, as well as reenactments of key moments in Beatles history (whonever played Ed Sullivan, hats off to you!) in between the band’s various costume changes. Prell shampoo commercial? The old time Prell shampoo commercial was good enough. Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble doing a commercial for Winston cigarettes? As funny as ever.

Musically the band is spot on with its attention to the songs and styles of the time. The suits and ties were on for the first several songs as the band “performed” on The Ed Sullivan Show. The styles quickly shifted as Rain made their way through to Shea Stadium, The Sgt. Pepper era, the rest of the 60’s and finally to Abbey Road, changing costumes to match each era. While this band performed the early Beatles songs with more than enough spark, it was from the Rubber Soul/Revolver albums on where Rain truly hit their stride and seemed to have the most fun.  Almost every song was performed as it was heard on the albums with uncanny precision. Close your eyes and you’d swear you were hearing “That Boy” on the Ed Sullivan show for the first time. You’ll likely remember exactly where you were the first time you heard “Strawberry Fields Forever” on the radio.

Even though a significant portion of the Beatles catalog was never performed live, this didn’t stop Rain from making sure every sound found its way into the show. From Mark Beyer’s extra layer of keyboards and Tom Teeley’s (George Harrison) midi-electronic set up, every flute, horn, every extraneous instrument and special effect was played. If it was on the album, it was a part of the show.

The only time Rain allowed itself to stretch its legs enough to make a song their own was during “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” What started off as a slow acoustic number turned into the dramatic sounding song we’re familiar with. The only bump was Teeley unplugging his own guitar not once, but twice, during his solo. You couldn’t help but feel bad for him as he went up to the microphone with a slightly defeated stance and said, “We tried.” Oh, what could have been as he seemed ready to let loose.

The most striking aspect of Rain is their attention to detail. Nothing was missed, and if you enjoy looking for the tiniest nuances, Rain is full of them. Steve Landes went through the John Lennon’s “clap your hands, stomp your feet” in the first act. That’s easy to spot. Less obvious was Landes chewing gum while singing during the entire second set, something the real John Lennon was known to do (Don’t believe me? Watch the video to “All You Need Is Love” or “Mother” for proof). Tom Teeley was almost spooky in his resemblance to later Beatles George Harrison. Like the real George Harrison, his presence was understated, but his performance was equally as powerful. Joe Bologna had the Ringo Starr smile, head bop, peace and love act down pat, but it was him mouthing out the “shoo be doo wop’s” during “Revolution” that caught my attention.  Graham Alexander (Paul McCartney) performed the second act of the show barefoot, the way Paul was pictured on the cover of Abbey Road. If that bit of attention didn’t grab you, his two acoustic performances would. The real Paul McCartney would play bass with his left hand, acoustic guitar with his right. In staying true to the Beatles, Alexander performed the same way: bass left handed, acoustic guitar right handed. If you can teach yourself to be ambidextrous, Alexander is living proof.

Rain succeeds in everything it sets out to do. It recreates an era as well as the sights and sounds of one of the greatest bands in rock ‘n’ roll history. Most of all it does so without coming off the least bit pretentious or overbearing in what it tries to do. McCartney once said in an interview that the aspect he loved most about the Beatles was its message of love. In the end, they were still four lovable mop tops whose purpose in music was to make people smile. After seeing this show, just try leaving a venue without one.

On les avait manquées au Mojomatic le 4 novembre dernier alors même qu’elles jouaient en première partie de leur mentor, le new-yorkais Kevin K. Du coup, on ne les a pas ratées à la Secret Place en ce soir de 11 novembre. Surtout que la guitariste nous avait déjà bluffée par sa prestation à la harpe-voix lors de son concert à la Maison des choeurs (voir le reportage sur le festival Montpellier à 100%). Sans bassiste – elles recrutent ! – Elodie et Fausta ont livré une copie très “garage” et épurée des versions du Maître. Du bon punk-rock qui ne demande qu’à être joué à l’extérieur de Montpellier…

Vor fünf Jahren taten sich am Rande von Leipzig – nämlich am Schkeuditzer Gymnasium – fünf Jungs zusammen, um Musik zu machen. Aus dieser Idee entstand eine von europaweit sehr wenigen Bands, die sich ausschließlich auf die legendären Rockklassiker der Dire Straits und Mark Knopfler spezialisierte. Vermutlich sind die Scuttles sogar die jüngste Dire-Straits-Tribute-Band der Welt – aber mit Sicherheit die Einzige in den neuen Bundesländern.

2009 war für die Scuttles ein besonderes und vor allem erfolgreiches Jahr: Sie spielten als Vorband der unvergessenen T-Rex beim 50. Plauener Spitzenfest und begeisterten auf dem Leipziger Markt im Rahmen der Classic Open nicht nur Impressario Peter Degner sondern auch das anwesende Publikum.

Der 5. Geburtstag der Leipziger Band wird am 14.11.2009 gefeiert. Wie bereits im vergangenen Jahr werden Songs wie „Sultans of Swing“, „Money for Nothing“ und „Brothers in Arms“ im großen Saal des Ankers in Leipzig-Möckern erklingen. Die Band hat sich weiterentwickelt – neben dem bekannten Repertoire großer Dire-Straits-Hits, wird eine Hand voll Songs zu erleben sein, die die Band von und um Mark Knopfler 1986 bei ihrem legendären Sydneykonzert spielten. Daneben wird Antonio Lucaciu für einen weiteren musikalischen Leckerbissen sorgen: Der begnadete und mit zahlreichen Jazzpreisen dekorierte Saxophonist wird die Scuttles bei einer Vielzahl von  Songs begleiten.

Einlass im Anker ist ab 20 Uhr und ab 20:30 Uhr leiten die Dirty Flowers einen unvergesslichen Musikabend mit Rockklassikern ein.

Il gruppo nacque sotto con il moniker di “Jeff Killed John”, come tribute band dei Metallica e dei Nirvana già nel 1998, e fu fondato dal cantante Matthew “Matt” Tuck, il chitarrista Michael “Padge” Padget , il bassista Nick Crandle e il batterista Michael “Moose” Thomas. All’inizio era una band nu metal che voleva seguire lo stile dei Korn e dei Limp Bizkit. Tuttavia l’inizio per la band non fu dei migliori a causa dei numerosi litigi, le ostilità crebbero ulteriormente quando altre band gallesi, come i Lostprophets e i Funeral For A Friend, divennero famose e popolari. Quando arrivò anche per loro il momento di registrare un demo furono abbandonati dal bassista Nick Crandle. Non riuscendo a trovare un accordo per registrare il demo si sciolsero. Risolti i dissidi trovarono in Jason “Jay” James il bassista che stavano cercando e cambiarono il loro nome da “Jeff Killed John”, prima in “Opportunity in Chicago” e poi in Bullet For My Valentine.

For Ann and Nancy Wilson, imitation appears to be the most sincerest form of flattery.

Describing itself as a tribute band of the seventies and eighties pop rock band “Heart”, a group of San Antonio-based friends have announced they are forming a Heart tribute band.

Identifying themselves as Mike J., Sammy K., Stacie Z., Sally L. and Billy R., the five singers will perform as a tribute band and sing such Heart classics as “Barracuda”, “Alone”, “These Dreams” and other songs.

Their name: Gall Bladder.

“I don’t know if we picked it because we were all high at the time, but it just sounded right,” said Sally L. “We’d heard this weird rumor that when Ann and Nancy Wilson first formed the band, they wanted to name it after an internal organ. They thought ‘Brain’ sounded too nerdy and that ‘Gall Bladder’ sounded to autopsyish. ‘Intestine’, of course, was out. They chose Heart instead. We think ‘Gall Bladder’ suits us well, since some will say we have a lot of ‘gall’ to try to duplicate Heart.”

Neither of the Wilson sisters could be reached for comment. They have been best known lately for publicly prohibiting John McCain’s failed presidential campaign from using the song “Barracuda” to introduce running mate Sarah Palin (who was nicknamed Sarah Barracuda in high school).

Every once in a while something comes along to throw a little spice into your normally mundane routine of work, eat, sleep, play. Yesterday, we had one of those crazy days where you start out thinking it is going to be just another normal day, and then boom, next thing you know Kimberlee sees a tweet from The Granada offering up a chance to win free tickets to this:

Now I don’t know about you, but I am not sure I would have been willing to shell out $10/person to go see an MJ tribute band, but when you give me the option to attend for free, then hell yeah I will give it a go.   It started off on a bit of a frustrating note, because there was a difference in times posted on the Granada’s website that doors open at 9 with the show beginning at 10, verses the Who’s Bad Myspace page showing the doors opening at 8, with the show starting at 9.   After checking with the box office, we went and killed a half our or so at the SandBar which was a tough sell let me tell you (NOT!).  We arrived back at the Granada at about 2 minutes until 10, thinking we were right on time.   But nope… we sat, and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited…   for the band to come onstage.  It was not until after 11:05 that the band finally took the stage, after we had already seen quite a few patrons leave after waiting over 45 minutes.   Now granted the DJ was solid, so it wasn’t like we were sitting listening to the sounds of silence, but seriously… we wanted to get our MJ on and go home and sleep, cuz we are kinda gettin older and have things like work the next day to worry about.

Well finally the show was officially on:

Once we got past the initial shock of the impersonator looking like he was in his upper 40’s or lower 50’s (I guess we were expecting a younger Jackson, not quite this accurate of a depiction) we settled into a fairly fun night.   I think it is a testament to how powerful the music of MJ is given that these guys could 1/2 ass it and still make a very entertaining event.   They hit on most of the major hits like Billie Jean, Smooth Criminal, Thriller, etc etc… but refused to take any requests from the audience or vary from their prepared format.   One section of the show which had us really cringing was the “Jackson 5″ portion.   We have all seen the cute clips of a young Michael around the age of 5 singing ABC, but somehow it didn’t quite translate to a 50 year old man singing the same hits, even if he did get on his knees for part of it.   I mean would you pay to see this?

In conclusion, the day of buildup talking about the show, the fun of moonwalking everywhere that day, and hearing some of the greatest hits definitely made it well worth the price of two free tickets!   However, I am kind of glad we didn’t shell out $20 for this event.

Play it in HQ for best results! Come out to the show, we’ll have this going, plus more, much more. All of Animals, all of Wish You Were Here…plus a few surprises.

La iniţiativa lui Nimrod şi Dr. V., se adună câţiva muzicieni buni de la mai multe formaţii clujene, care vor să îşi ocupe weekendurile libere cu formaţiile de care aparţin, cu cântări dedicate exclusiv pieselor din repertoriul Metallica (thrash-metal).

Este prima dată când se face aşa ceva la noi.

Masterpiece este primul proiect de gen de care ştiu la noi în ţară. Sigur, au mai fost formaţii de covers, care erau de obicei angajate de un anumit patron şi care pregăteau un anumit repertoriu-potpuriu de piese din repertoriul internaţional. Asta exista şi pe vremea lui Ceauşescu. Aici ar fi vorba de trupe de gen Hazard la Cluj sau Jukebox la Bucureşti.

Au mai fost încercări de formaţii, precum Red Rum, înfiinţat de Alex Purje la Bucureşti, care încerca să ofere un anumit gen de piese, din epoca muzicii grunge, nefiind ancorat pe o anumită formaţie.

  Rieccomi dopo un pò di tempo a riprendere in mano questo blog e parlare un pò di rock. 

Adesso vi parlo della coverband di cui faccio parte, gli ACCIDICI.  La coverband degli AC/DC nasce da un’idea di Roberto e Robertino nell’inizio del 2009. Subito dopo si unirà Marco seguito poi da Franco. Gli accidici prendono forma con l’arrivo dell’ultimo componente Francesco. La line-up è al completo! Adesso si prova molto e si cominciano a vedere i primi risultati. La qualità del rock, puro e grezzo, ricalca pienamente lo stile degli AC/DC! Appena possibile inserirò dei video dove potrete dire cosa ne pensate.

I can remember seeing this on MTV years ago, when there was M, and I thought it was really cool and sleek then and it still holds up, even with the kinda lame drum sound.
