This London Cab has a very special numberplate – KARL09 – as this is Karl’s Taxi… he is leaving the UK and this taxi will take him on his journey away… It is twinned with a big red Bus! I hope that these will provide Karl and his family with lovely memories of their years in London! Hurray!

Suatu malam, sebelum tidur, setelah menonton film yang kebetulan ada spookynya (hantu-hantuan versi londo yang buat orang Indonesia tidak mengerikan sebenarnya). Ada dialog antara seorang anak kecil berumur 5.5 tahun dengan bapaknya yang masih lugu dalam menghadapi anak, tentang ada atau tidaknya Spooky.

Besok paginya sisa dialog ini sepertinya terlintas di pikiran anak kecil itu waktu bicara tentang Tuhan dengan ibunya.

Papa: Tidur ya, udah malem, biar kamu besok ngga kesiangan.
Anak kecil: Aku takut sama spookie, temenin dong pa.

P: Kan ngga ada spooky, kamu ngga usah takut.
A: Aku liat di tivi

P: Ya itu kan cuman di film kartun, ngga beneran ada, digambar sama orang
A: Tapi aku takut …

P: Ndak usah takut, emang kamu pernah liat spooky?
A: Belum pernah

P: Pernah denger spookie ngomong
A: Belum pernah ..

P: Ya udah ngga usah takut. Ini dino nya diajak tidur aja buat nemenin biar gak takut. Udah ya, tidur sana, nanti Papa nyusul.

Setelah beberapa kali bolak balik nongol lagi dari kamar dan nanya ini itu akhirnya tidur juga. Paginya, setelah sholat subuh samar-samar kedengeran dialog sama ibunya

A: Mama tadi berdoa sama Tuhan ya ?
M: Iya, mama berdoa sama Allah

A: Berdoa apa ma ?
M: Minta supaya papa, mama dan kamu sehat dan kamu jadi anak baik.

A: Terus apa kata Allah
M: *mikir sebentar melirik papa yang pura pura ngga denger dan langsung jalan pelan-pelan ke dapur* ya mama ngga bisa denger langsung jawaban, tapi Allah ndengerin.

A: Aku juga belum pernah denger.
M: *beres-beres mukena dan diem *

A: Mama pernah liat Tuhan ?
M: Belum pernah, tapi Dia ada diatas sana.

A: Tapi Tuhan ada ya Ma ?
M: Iya ada sayang,

*papanya yang denger dialog itu mulai panik, teringat dialog tadi malam*
P: Nak, sini ini liat di komputer ada film dinosaurus *google Triceratops, favorite dia, kebetulan langsung nemu dari discovery*, ada Triceratops berkelahi sama Tyranosaurus (padahal ngga berkelahi ternyata)

A: *Langsung tertarik dan lari ke papanya * Mana .. mana …
P: * fiuh …. *

Ternyata ngajarin gimana supaya anak kecil  tidak takut spooky tapi percaya bahwa Tuhan itu ada, secara runut logika (tanpa harus menggunakan kata pokoknya) tidak mudah, Kali ada yang bisa membantu. Jauh lebih gampang nerangin tentang Triceratops.

Thats right, i’m street now. Well, i’m not so, nevermind.

Its has been a while, right? Since we last talked i have had a birthday. A good birthday, a bad age. I dont wanna grow up, much more anyway.

Also, my computer blew up.

Well, i say blew up. I think a more accurate description on the incident would be it slowly stopped working, and then wouldnt work at all. There was no flames, no big bangs or scary explosions, as i see i may have led you to belive with the last statement. It was a really sad occasion see, i have had my computer for-EVER! It had my life on it and when it died it dragged all my work, music and shizzle with it. Depressing days indeed. Also, i can see how the word ’shizzle’ in the last sentence could be interpreted as porn, so just know, it does not mean porn.

ANYWAY, my Nanna bought me a new laptop to replace it. And, oh my it is beautiful.

For my birthday i had friends round and we got drunk, i went out with other friends and we got drunk. Nothing much out of the ordinary but i had a bloody good time. Especially with my lovely Tor. We hit up Chinatown as well, best idea ever, and best £8 wasted on a slice of sugar ever. Yes, slice.

We also saw Lady Gaga in a club.

Dont get me wrong, i love her, i think she is brilliant… and obviously hot. The new video for Bad Romance is amazing, apart from the one shot where she looks like Winehouse but apart from that she is hot like, 99% of the video.

Tor says it wasnt her in the club, and i can kind of see where she is coming from, i mean why would someone of high class like The Gaga be mixing with such crap as Michaela McQueen from Hollyoaks, who was also there. But she was. Also saw Lily Loveless on a train a couple of days later. She though, was just stalking me, im sure.

(Tor would like me to let you know she loves Michaela McQueen. Not like that! In a “friend” way. Soooo.. in a gay way then?!! ha.)

I am gonna wrap this up because i havent really got anything to entertain you with as all i have been doing is getting stoned and illegally downloading horror films and watching boys play for HOURS on, is it Call of Duty?  I had a go but five seconds in Adam was screaming to me go faster, Matt was laughing that i was gonna get raped and the first person that shot me, killed me. Discovered thats not for me.

I have certainly not been going to uni or doing coursework. I am sorry if i have a life to live. An excuse i have used since school, jolly old south chadd, and still continue to use today. It works so all is good. However i have to go to uni tomorrow, at bloody 9am, as i have a practical lecture. Shit. I also have to see my dissertation tutor as i have a meeting with a dinosaur expert at the museum in Cardiff next week. Double shit. What if i forget the dinosaur names? What if i resort to making dinosaur noises to try and impress him?? What am i gonna wear? Is it gonna be weird if i wear a t-shirt with a Triceratops on, because i have one and i will!! Worst still, i have a 2 foot movable T-rex  model that i am using to illustrate a point and so will be carrying through the streets of Cardiff on the day. It would look less wierd if i rode the bastard.

We didn’t have the heart to take away our kids mass-produced toys when we decided plastic is bad. However, I have given them some other ones to throw into the mix. I enjoy the hobby. We save some money on toys. My kids get to play with natural materials and more unique items. Whatever your talents are, I strongly suggest making some fun for your kids. It will make you warm inside. Here are some samples.

A: The dinosaur with the longest horn should come as no surprise. This honor belongs to the world famous Triceratops who sported horns that grew up to 3ft(90cm) long above the eyes. Paleontologists are still unclear what the primary point of these horns were. While Triceratops certainly could have used them for defense, other ceratopsians sport horns that were so elaborate and twisted around that they wouldn’t work for fighting.

Some have suggested that the Triceratops horns could have been used for friendly pushing matches. They would lock horns with each other and push back and forth as a competition. It is also suggested that they could have used their horns for mating purposes. The dino with the biggest horns would have been the most attractive mate. What do you think?

Arrrrrgggh! How did that happen!?! The new baby is due in 16 days (as if you didn’t know, as if I haven’t gone on about it often enough!!) and I have just had an order in for 11 new paintings!!! Caramba! Well, that is why I “front loaded” all my work. And to be honest, the customers are my brother and sister-in-law (and nephew). So there is some leeway… and they are all sets – which means “economies of scale”. 4 cupcakes, 4 ducks and 3 penguins will be winging their way to Austria soon (ish). Hurrah! (Final paintings will have  a different colour scheme to the ones displayed…).

If baby decides to stay put until its due date, I should be able to complete the cupcakes and the ducks in time. The penguins which are for my nephew will wait (my nephew is 7 weeks old, I think he is ok with that!!).

…ok, I think it is slowly becoming obvious, that I have less “Art” and more “Baby” on the mind at the mo. With officially 18 days to go, I can probably be excused. Here is a pet subject of mine (along with Waste Reduction and Real Nappies) – blood donation. As a pregnant lady, I have not been allowed to donate blood for the last 8 months. Before that I wasn’t allowed to donate for about 18 months (9 months pregnancy, plus 9 months recovery of body). I was “gutted”. Sounds weird, I know, why give away your blood – but you know, it is such a simple thing and it does SUCH good, that as far as I am concerned it is a no brainer. A friend of mine recently lost 5 litres of blood in childbirth. Without blood donors, she would have died. Simple as that. That seems a good enough reason to me… anyway, I digress.

The thing I want to go on about this time, is Cord Blood donation – from what I gather it is as valuable as being a Bone Marrow donor and yet it carries no risks, discomforts or time off for you. Something that is usually thrown away (!) is saved and can save lives… it makes up for not being able to donate blood for 18 months. If you are expecting – talk to your midwife or look here for more info: http://cord.blood.co.uk/ This is SUCH a no brainer, you really cannot not take part. Save a life, by signing a piece of paper!

…when I was pregnant with Red Ted, a good friend sent me the now adapted recipe below for yummy Granola Bars/ Flapjacks. I have since passed it on to other expecting & new mummies/ made batches to share with them. What is great about these bars is that when you need an energy fix (during pregnancy or breastfeeding), they are packed not only with the energy you need (sugar, honey) but also with goodness, such as Iron (Pumpkin Seeds, Apricots) or Omega 3 (Walnuts, Linseeds etc) – depending on what you decide to chuck in… and they taste yummy. They also last for ages. I carry one or two wrapped in foil in my hand bag for those energy emergencies and have just added some to my hospital bag!

Ingredients:

• 175g unsalted butter
• 140g clear honey
• 250g demerara sugar
• 350g porridge oats
• 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

+ I vary this according to what I have in:

• 85g walnuts
• 85g raisins
• 85g dried apricots (chopped)
• 85g pumpkin seeds
• 50g ground almonds
• 50g sesame seeds
• Recently, I added cranberries and Linseeds for extra goodness!

 Instructions:

1. Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas5.
2. Use a deep edge tray.
3. Melt butter and honey, then stir in sugar (I use the pan on the scales to weigh out the honey and butter, thus avoiding any sticky messes in measuring bowls).
4. Cook over a low heat until the sugar is dissolved.
5. Bring to the boil and simmer for 2 mins.
6. Mix all remaining ingredients together (again, I just use one bowl to measure these all out in, reducing the washing up!).
7. Then add to the melted butter/honey/sugar.  Mix well.
8. Tip into tin and press down (About 1cm thick?).
9. Bake for 15 mins until the edges are starting to brown (I find I bake it for 20-30min!).
10. Allow to cool & cut into fingers.
11. Store in air tight container (and hide from The Englishman & Red Ted).

"My costume roars, what does yours do?"

I can’t believe it’s been six months since my brother and his wife announced their pregnancy. Since they are expecting their little “treat” to arrive on Halloween, I couldn’t resist but do a Halloween-themed baby shower. Everything had pumpkins!

And the best part of all… the kids dressed in costume to welcome the arrival of their new cousin! Of course, my son was wearing one of le•top’s 2009 Halloween costumes. He was dressed as “Troy” the Triceratops, which he loved to wear because it kept him warm all day (now that fall has arrived in California!) and had a hidden button that everyone pushed to make his costume “ROAR!” I thought it was going to scare him when he first heard the sound, but he didn’t seem to even notice. I guess Mommy always sounds like an angry dinosaur.

P-p-p-p-p-pick up a Penguin or three.. here is a colourful little Penguin Trio all set to waddle into our Brand New Nursery. Hope Baby 2 will love them as much as Red Ted has loved his Teds..

Speaking of Baby 2 – I need an online name for the new baby – to go with Red Ted… do send me your ideas through… and hopefully come mid Nov, we will have a new introduction to make.

The last few days have been spent with getting everything in order. I have a reasonable batch of Xmas Cards prepared all ready for the “rush”. Red Ted’s room has been rearranged a little, so that a spare set of drawers and the glider can go in the nursery, the tax return has been started and I have “front loaded” any paintings I could. I think “nesting” is the word… I do still have a little over 6 weeks to go, but no harm getting it all done. Still loads to do (sadly the chickens are going, the garden needs tidying, green tomato chutney needs making http://redtedart.wordpress.com/2009/08/06/green-tomato-chutney/, babygrows need washing and sorting…….)

I want to believe.

Not necessarily in aliens or spirits or the Loch Ness Monster (at least not specifically) – but there is an awful lot of stuff out there that defies explanation. The planet’s weirdostat is set pretty high.

This image is one of the Ica Stones – a collection of well over a thousand stones, estimated to be between 500 and 1500 years old, with a variety of indigenous carvings. This one, you might notice, depicts a person riding a triceratops.

Most people will look at something like this and shrug it off as a hoax. And perhaps it is. But what of the Phaistos Disc? the Lid of Palenque? the Baghdad Battery? the Dropa Stones? The Antikythera Mechanism? The gazillions of other oddities and phenomena which sound like Robert Ludlum book titles?

Can they really ALL be hoaxes?

Isn’t there, perhaps, some small chance that maybe we’re WRONG about some of our assertions? Maybe our ‘facts’ aren’t as solid as we think they are when it comes to radioisotope dating*, geological strata, ice core sampling, or even the timing of evolutionary phases.

I’m not suggesting that people ever rode around on triceratops. That strikes me as a very good way to find oneself impaled on horns. At the very least, though, perhaps it means that someone in South America knew about dinosaurs before Westerners began digging them up in the 1850s. Similarly, the Baghdad Battery most certainly suggests that there were people 2500 years ago with some knowledge of electricity. We have pretty much accepted at this point that our ancient forebears had a surprising fluency in mathematics and astronomy – perhaps it’s time we gave a little more and began to seriously look into what else we might have forgotten.

History may be holding onto some seriously cool shit just waiting to be re-discovered.

Also? Perhaps there’s something to the aliens, spirits and/or Nessie as well.

* ‘Radioisotope dating’… if you show me uranium, I’ll show you mine?
