President George W. Bush once boasted, “I’m not a textbook player, I’m a gut player.” The new tenant of the Oval Office takes a strikingly different approach. President Obama is almost defiantly deliberative, methodical and measured, even when critics accuse him of dithering. When describing his executive style, he goes into Spock mode, saying, “You’ve got to make decisions based on information and not emotions.”

Obama’s handling of the Afghanistan conundrum has been a spectacle of deliberation unlike anything seen in the White House in recent memory.

The strategic review began in September. Again and again, the war council convened in the Situation Room. The president mulled an array of unappealing options. Next week, finally, he will tell the American public the outcome of all this strategizing.
“He’s establishing his decision-making process as being almost diametrically the opposite of the previous administration,” says Lawrence Wilkerson, a retired Army colonel who served as Secretary of State Colin L. Powell’s chief of staff. Wilkerson, who teaches national security decision-making at George Washington University, says the Bush-Cheney style was “cowboy-like, typical Texas, typical Wyoming, and extremely secretive.”

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE . . . On this THANKSGIVING DAY 2009 … I stand to give thanks that our current executive leadership is not cut from the Bush/Cheney mold of … “shoot first and ask questions later” … and that President Obama is capable of taking whatever heat we choose to heap on him for being contemplative as opposed to “trigger happy” …

… I invite “us” to consider not to shame, blame or criticize but rather simply ask … what would it look like when it’s fixed … and own that ONLY we have the power to bring about the change needed to fix it …

Late last week the mtvU Woodie Awards took place in NYC and the homies doing it big for the state of California were in attendance and presented an award. Such a good look. Only onwards and upwards for these three.

Voilà 10 jours que le spleen s’est installé, que l’on vit sur les dernières miettes. Finalement, je raconte.

Arrivées à 14 h sous la crachin nantais, ma cousine et moi nous installons dans la file d’attente. Clope sur cigarette pour tenter de se réchauffer, débat sur l’altruisme avec des quarantenaires fort passionnnants et sympathiques, émerveillés de voir qu’à 20 ans on peut kiffer Clash Depeche Mode et autres Doors. 17 h 30 ouverture des portes. 6 courtes vidéos diffusées pendant l’attente, on peut voter pour nos préférées sur le site off du groupe. Mais aussi la première partie, Expatriate. Une entrée rock’n'roll old school qui n’est pas sans rappeler les Eagles of Death Metal, mais qui bien vite se mélange à une pop tintée de synthés relativement agréables. Polis et reconnaissants, les australiens ont plutôt assuré, même si j’aurais préféré que le chanteur se décoiffe plus vite et n’use pas autant de ses cordes vocales. Encore 30 minutes avant de mourir. Soudain, éclipse et voix d’anges. Comme un songe. Et puis, le moment.

J’ai assisté à cinq de leurs concerts, celui-ci fut de loin le meilleur. Une cohésion entre les membres du groupe. Steve, un batteur expansif rythmant le concert par ses jets de baguettes et ses sourires ultrabright. Stef a retrouvé l’usage de ses zygomatiques et se tord dans tous les sens, occupe l’espace scénique, descend à notre niveau, pour notre plus grand plaisir. Malgré quelques problèmes techniques en début de concert, tous les autres musiciens, Fiona, Bill et Nick, assurent. Et puis le nain. Sa voix bien déployée, ses sourires (si si ça pique au début mais on s’y fait), ses manières et son regard perçant.  Ils étaient avec nous, n’avaient pas l’air de s’emmerder, ils avançaient vers nous et nous faisions de même. Le public nantais est parfois long à se lancer, il faut aller le chercher : ils ont su le faire. Une setlist surtout faites de morceaux de Battle for the Sun, le dernier opus, et de Meds, le précédent que je ne porte pas dans mon coeur (mais qui malgré tout passe bien ici). Quelques tubes de Sleeping with Ghosts (Special Needs, Sleeping with Ghosts) Black Market Music (Special K) et Without you I’m Nothing (Every you Every me). Twenty Years, celle que j’attendais au tournant, version semi-acoustique à la cambodgienne (cf. concert du Cambodge sur le DVD qui accompagne BFTS). Un morceau inédit joué seulement en concert, Trigger Happy, efficace qui prend aux tripes. Les nouveaux morceaux sont encore meilleurs sur scène, ampleur et puissance décuplées. La dernière version de Taste in Men pour finir, celle qui achève de me liquéfier. Une fois les lumières rallumées, une seule envie : pleurer. J’ai beau le savoir ça arrive comme par surprise à chaque fois. Et rien que de pensr que je devrais peut-être attendre 3 ans pour avoir ma prochaine dose, que peut-être le groupe aura fait un album merdique, se sera séparé, aura recommencé à se droguer, à être insupportable, que Brian aura peut-être fait une permanente histoire de repousser encore les limites de sa capillarité… Et merde. J’en veux de suite, encore.

Onlangs kreeg ik van iemand de opmerking dat mijn blog een beetje té ernstig begon te worden en dat het dringend tijd werd dat het er terug iets luchtiger aan toe zou gaan in de toekomst. Niet dat we aan ieders wil én wensen willen of kunnen tegemoetkomen, maar zo af en toe iets ludieks erbij: dat moet zéker kunnen. Droogstoppels aller landen: geen nood, we zullen de ernst ook in de toekomst niet schuwen!

Niet dat ik iets te bewijzen zou hebben, maar om mezelf geen eeuwigdurend azijnpissersimago te bezorgen wil ik jullie hier graag deelgenoot maken van dingen waar ikzelf hard om kan lachen. Voor zover iemand er hier aan zou twijfelen: ik lach graag, liefst zo hard mogelijk. Zo hard dat het soms zelfs verdacht lijkt voor mijn medemensen.

Lang geleden had ik een stevige boon voor de humor van Paul De Leeuw. Ondertussen volg ik zijn doen en laten niet meer zo erg, maar ik ben er vrij zeker van dat ik ‘m nog steeds zou appreciëren, mocht ik naar zijn programma’s kijken. De Leeuw was/is vrij vaak controversieel, maar heeft dan ook voor een aantal waanzinnig goede tv-momenten gezorgd. Hij was de laatste 50 jaar zowat altijd de laureaat in Humo’s Pop Poll in de categorie ‘Bekwaamste buitenlandse tv-figuur’. Een aantal van zijn typetjes is legendarisch, waaronder Bob de Rooij. Zoals die keer toen hij zijn Turkse buurman Nederlands ging leren.

Ik geef toe, het Vlaamse concept van Trigger Happy (later o.a. omgevormd naar Tragger Hippy en Hagger Trippy) was niet altijd origineel, omdat ze vaak inspiratie haalden bij hun Britse buren. Maar soms is het beter om goed te kopiëren dan om een slecht ‘eigen’ produkt te lanceren. De korte sketch van de meeneemchinees vond ik in ieder geval hilarisch.

Kamagurka en Herr Seele mogen zowat de huistekenaars van Humo worden genoemd, maar af en toe verblijdt Humo ons nog eens met de absurde humor van Gummbah. Het is meestal geen hapklare brok, maar ‘t is wel mijn soort humor. Hopelijk zitten er nog liefhebbers onder jullie?

Ik ken weinig mensen die zich geen breuk lachen met katten én hondenfilmpjes waarop hun favoriete huisdieren de meest rare fratsen uithalen. Die zijn er in overvloed te vinden op Youtube. Sommige katten kunnen zelfs praten of piano spelen. Eigenlijk lijken ze heel erg op mensen, maar dan net iets anders!

Of ik een fan ben van The Simpsons? Laat het me zo zeggen: ik bleef er niet voor thuis om het op tv te bekijken, maar ik heb ondertussen wel al 11 reeksen op dvd gekocht. Dus waarschijnlijk ben ik toch wel een fan! Ik vind het zo’n geweldige reeks omdat het zowel een jong als ouder publiek aanspreekt. Vooral het feit dat men zoveel zaken parodieert vind ik gewoon geniaal.

Voor mij gaat er niets boven een portie fijne Britse humor: Monty Python, Harry Enfield & Chums, The Fast Show, Little Britain, … you name it! Onze vaderlandse humoristen (enkele uitzonderingen niet te na gesproken) zijn eerder soft op humoristisch gebied. Of het nu droge humor, zwarte humor of sarcastische humor is, ook de jongens van Top Gear kennen er iets van!

Tot slot toch nog een bewijs dat er in ons land wel degelijk goede humor op tv kwam, maar het was dan wel onbedoeld grappig. In 1987 waagde de openbare omroep zich aan een uitzending, die hen nu al 22 jaar achtervolgt. In ‘De Pak De Poen Show’ liep zowat alles wat mis kon gaan gewoon mis. Men ging toen ‘live’ en dat bleek een erg grove inschattingsfout. Na enkele afleveringen (ik herinner me dat Luc Appermont de presentatie van de gebroers Verreth overnam) gaf men er wijselijk de brui aan.

At last, though long, our jarring notes agree/And time it is when raging war is done/To smile at ’scapes and perils overblown. Sad news from the mystical land of Leavenworth tonight: Shay Baker, Glamour Shot princess and friend o’ coke dealers, has been forced out of office by the cruel winds of fate — and by the heartless souls of the Leavenworth City Commission. Alas, poor Shay! I knew her, Horatio: a woman of infinite poor decision-making. The move comes, of course, after Baker lent her pen to the cause of leniency for devoted coca plant fan Billy Trinkle — a kind move, perhaps, but maybe one best done in the capacity of private citizen.

The action came after an emotional apology from Baker, who remains on the City Commission.

“Never at any time did I intend for this letter to be from anyone but me,” she told residents, adding that she did not intend to disrespect the police.

“I apologize if you feel that I have not been a good representative.”

Commissioner Larry Dedeke, a former police officer, said he felt that Baker’s letter was disrespectful to police officers and citizens.

“I think that they’ve been slapped in the face,” he said.

Slapped in the face? Methinks you overstate the matter, sir. What we’re talking about here is a rather poor exercise of judgment by the mayor, not a deliberate attempt to subvert the judicial process or put a thumb in the eye of law enforcement. What’s unfortunate is that we’ve become a scalp-happy culture, in which one must fall in order to properly rectify a wrong. We caught Shay, thanks to the magic of public records, in flagrante delicto trying to help an old friend, no matter how unwise that friendship may have been. Her aims were admirable, but her methods were deeply questionable.

Shay Baker screwed up, to be sure. Is the mistake worth her job? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe it deserves more reflection by Larry and Co. Feel free to contribute your own opinion. One thing is certain: Star commenters are here to focus on the real story.
