Today’s entertaining other sci fi list for the day is the 12 most gigantic hovering spaceships

Today’s entertaining other sci fi list for the day is the 12 most gigantic hovering spaceships from sci fi film and television. This brings me to today’s topic (admire the segue here), because it sadly doesn’t include my favourite gigantic hovering spaceships, the Vogon Construction Fleet which, in Douglas Adams immortal words “hung in the skies exactly the way that bricks don’t.” Which naturally leads to….

Trillian aka Tricia McMillan The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy series (book version)

Trillian is a mathematician and an astrophysicist. She also ends up going off with Zaphod Beeblebrox, but I think we can forgive her that much. Aboard the Heart of Gold spaceships she is, pretty consistently, the most sensible and grounded person of the lot. How she manages this when surrounded by the emotionally disturbed, slightly insane men and computers, is a matter of some concern. She is however up for adventure, willing to travel out into the unknown because, as she says, “it was either that or the dole queue.” She is the most reliable pilot of the improbability drive spaceship, brave, resourceful and in Arthur’s words “beautiful, charming and devastatingly intelligent.” She also represents an aspect of the destroyed humanity which Arthur Dent in his glorious depression cannot.

This above all appeared to Trillian to be genuinely stupid, but she could no longer be bothered to argue about it.

I came to instant messaging (IM) late by many web worker’s standards. Spending time on some locked-down client sites meant that IM was never part my communications toolbox. However, when I started working with ISP and telecom clients, everybody wanted my IM details. At the time, I settled on Trillian because it supported multiple IM protocols, so I didn’t have to keep switching clients to communicate with clients and project team members.

Now that I am getting to grips with my new iPhone 3Gs, I have been looking for an IM client for it. The good news is that Trillian for the iPhone is now available ($3.99 from the iTunes App Store) — and it’s good enough for me to come back to Trillian, at least on my iPhone.

Account Setup

If you aren’t a Trillian user (or drifted away to other clients, like I did), you’ll have to sign up for a Trillian Astra account after you install Trillian on your iPhone. This is a Trillian-specific account. Then setting up your individual IM accounts is easily done by tapping on “Manage Connections.” Cerulean Studios, the team behind Trillian, provides a very intuitive interface for the application, which makes the setup quite easy even if you are brand new to the iPhone or iPod touch.

Application Features

Trillian for the iPhone includes all of the features and management tools you’d expect in an IM application. It supports AIM (s twx), GTalk (s goog), Windows Live Messenger (s msft), Yahoo Messenger (s yhoo), ICQ, Jabber/XMPP, and MySpaceIM (s nws).

If you are like me and find IM to be a productivity distraction and like to manage your online presence judiciously, Trillian for the iPhone’s management features won’t disappoint you. I found the centralized status message controls very usable and convenient. Of course, you aren’t going to have a wide selection of status messages in this mobile application, but you probably aren’t going to need them anyway.

Instant messaging on the go for me is probably not going to be like text messaging — I’m not going to have the app open all the time, unlike a desktop client. I can imagine that IM on the iPhone is going to be useful for me when I might be on a client site and want to make myself accessible to friends and clients online for short IM chats. Another situation would be times like being out to lunch or when I am visiting family and need to be online to answer a client question.

When I was considering retiring my old BlackBerry (s rimm) and making the leap to the iPhone 3Gs, the virtual keyboard was a concern. However, I’ve found text messaging and now IM to be no problem — and I am a big guy by many people’s standards.

Using Trillian on the iPhone has been like coming back to where I started. In fact, I may even check out the Mac (now in beta) and PC clients to see what I’ve been missing.

Do you have an IM client on your iPhone? Which one do you use?

Don’t you find having to use multiple instant messenger services for all your different friends and

Don’t you find having to use multiple instant messenger services for all your different friends and contacts a real pain in the bottom, well I do, I have contacts on 3 different messenger services and Facebook which of course has its own chat / messenger service.

I have in the past gathered quite a few contacts on Windows Live Messenger, a few more on Yahoo Messenger and I even have a couple on AOL Instant Messenger, add to these all my lovely friends on Facebook and it all becomes a bit unworkable. I had more or less decided to single out only one messenger service to use along with Facebook, I chose Windows Live Messenger, I’m not sure why I just did.

But I remember quite a long time ago I used to use a bit of software called “Trillian”, this was like a shell, a front end if you like, which linked together my different messengers in one window, it worked ok, perhaps a little clunky at times but I remembered it being very useful. So I did a little search and lo and behold, Trillian still exists but with a whole new look and feel, a revamped interface, it looks all modern and stuff, it even accepts services such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace etc.

So in this modern, highly connected age we have “Trillian Astra”, this sleek new piece of software is a messenger client on which you can use all your different services under one roof, it works as standalone on your PC (my choice), on a web browser anywhere and on the IPhone (for anyone lucky enough to own one), it sounds like the answer to my problems so I have downloaded it to my laptop and decided to give it a try out, no I’m not lucky enough to own an IPhone.

Following download and installation, all very easy as it should be, I was asked to enter the log on details for each of the services I use, it also set up an identity and a little profile for Trillian Astra as well, there was nothing in the least bit difficult. I now discovered I had a brand new shiny messenger gadget sat on my desktop. On the contacts window were listed all my contacts from Windows Live, Yahoo and AOL, my Facebook friends did not appear on the offline list originally but as each one comes online they appear as such and when they go offline they are then added to the normal offline contact list and remain visible from then on, it also shows e-mail updates for any of the services which have it and updates by my Facebook contacts.

I can appear online, invisible, away, in fact any of the usual statuses either for all the services or individually. It is also completely skinable although I quite like the default skin myself, there is a well featured preferences editor so you can set it up more or less as you like. Another quite clever thing, well I think its clever, is the use of MetaContacts, if you have a friend who is a contact on yahoo, AOL and Windows live for instance you could leave them all showing separately, or alternatively you could lump them all together under one contact name of your choice, this is called a MetaContact and can tidy your contact list up a bit if its getting over busy.

I have already been involved in instant messaging on it with a contact on one of the main messaging services and found it easy and intuitive to use, its all pretty seamless, whichever service my friend is using it seems to me to be as if we are both using Trillian, meanwhile the other person just see’s more or less what they normally do with their own messenger. I was also chatting to a friend who was at the time on Facebook and while I saw a Trillian style chat window he was just seeing the usual Facebook chat window. The clunkiness I remember from the old version seems to have gone, so far this feels slick and smooth and I’m enjoying using it, its getting a big thumbs up from me and I see no reason at the moment for me to use anything else.

Of course everything I have said here applies to the standalone downloadable version which runs on your own PC, I haven’t tried the web browser based version and I don’t have an IPhone.

Of the main messenger services, Windows Live Messenger is still my favourite but now it doesn’t matter so much because with minimal effort I can see them all together by opening only one piece of software, coolio, I think I’ll be carrying on using Trillian Astra and therefore using all my messengers at once, well unless something bad regarding it rears its ugly head, if that happens I’ll let you know.

For anyone interested these are my 3 messenger ID’s,

Windows Live Messenger = kvnwheeler2509@hotmail.com

Yahoo Messenger = kvnwheeler@btopenworld.com

AOL Instant Messenger = kvnwheeler

and

My Facebook is here = http://www.facebook.com/thehappysnapper

If you’re interested in connecting on any of these then please be my guest, if we already know each other in some way or if we have something in common, a hobby, past time or life experience perhaps, then I will probably accept, if we don’t know each other and your just looking to amass meaningless contacts or we have nothing at all in common then I may not accept, still, if your interested then give it a try and we’ll see.

this is one instant messaging client i would spend my money on
it costs $25 USD, but its a one heck of an experience using it

if you have not one, two but trillian accounts online, this is one software that could link them all up together
whether its facebook, twitter, windows live, gmail, you name it, they have it!

you'll get a 30-day trial of the pro version when you successfully install it to your computer, and the pro version is so awesome. it lets you select the many themes available and apply it to the IM client, lets you access your astra account via the web, and many more!

for a whole list of screenies:
https://www.trillian.im/learn/screenshots/

but, im stuck with the free version for now. bleh.
it still is way better than sucky windows live messenger, which takes up too much memory, and makes your computer glacially slow.

oh, and they are making an iphone/ipod application of trillian! cant wait for it! rarrrh

So this frood named Eoin Colfer, well known for his Artemis Fowl children’s books, was asked b

So this frood named Eoin Colfer, well known for his Artemis Fowl children’s books, was asked by the widow of the late great Douglas Adams to “finish” the Hitchhiker’s Guide series. Finish H2G2?! Well doesn’t that just take the biscuit! What do you call Mostly Harmless, for Zark’s sake!?

Actually, I don’t care about all that. Hitchhiker’s Guide isn’t sacred, and has appeared in so many forms that it’s almost too difficult to count. That Colfer was approached by Adams’ widow Jane Belson, not the other way around, is the right start for me, meaning it wasn’t a vanity project. That Colfer has always been a fan that appreciates the uniqueness of the series is a critical next step. And that Colfer was quoted as saying that “this is a wonderful opportunity to work with characters I have loved since childhood and give them something of my own voice while holding onto the spirit of Douglas Adams and not laying a single finger on his five books” says to me that this is a serious effort that deserves open-minded consideration.

So now that I’m finished with And Another Thing: Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Part Six of Three, I can truly and unequivocally say whether this Colfer chap really knows where his towel is, or whether I now have this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left side.

LIKED

Nostalgia. I listened to the audio, read by Simon Jones (who portrayed Arthur Dent numerous HHGTTG iterations), and I have to say that for the first 10-15 minutes of listening to him speaking new Hitchhiker’s, I was grinning from ear to ear. Nostalgia is not always good, as frequently the reality is not as good as you remembered it to be. But I’d say that overall the book was upbeat and fun, didn’t take away anything from what came before it, and gave us just a little bit more.

Unmistakably Hitchhiker’s. The Part Six detractors will hate me for even thinking of saying this, but the book felt like a Hitchhiker’s book. Possibly more so than Adams’ last two entries into the series. There really isn’t a series that feels like Hitchhiker’s, and someone with less appreciation or imagination might not pull it off. Colfer definitely pulled it off. Taking a new trip with Arthur and Ford and Trillian and Zaphod felt good because the tone and essence that makes Hitchhiker’s so special was there. It was a good romp in the Hitchhiker’s universe with all the trappings we know and love.

NOT SO MUCH

Guide Notes. I think it’ll probably be a universal criticism of this book that the Guide Notes were over-played. If I remember correctly, Adams phased them out and they did not appear in later novels. I appreciate Colfer bringing them back, as it’s one of those distinctly Hitchhiker’s type of things, and the early Adams’ novels that used them were more popular with fans than the later ones that did not. But they interrupted the flow of things way too much, and I really don’t remember any of them like I do about what happened to all the biros (ballpoint pens). So I appreciate their use, but wished they had been used more sparingly.

Missing the Mark. In addition to the Guide Notes, a few other things didn’t work for me. It’s hard to say that Colfer should not have done this or that, as he shouldn’t try to imitate Adams. But I found a few things distracting. Names that are puns was one of them. They didn’t really make me laugh, or groan. More like just roll my eyes. There were also a few too many references to previous things from Hitchhiker’s radio, TV, novels and so forth. When you’re on Part Six, it’s hard not to mine that previous gold for more nuggets, and even Adams may have done the same if he were the author. Not that I’d advocate getting rid of them all, but each reference used was an opportunity wasted to come up with something new and just as unique and fun.

RECOMMEND?

To people unfamiliar with Hitchhiker’s, I’d say start at the beginning. There’s too much history here to start at Part Six. But for Hitchhiker’s fans, I would definitely recommend it. There’s not much of a point in the story/plot, but is there ever in Hitchhiker’s? If you go into it expecting Douglas Adams, you’ll find ways to be disappointed. If you go into it expecting the essence of Douglas Adams, I think you will be entertained. Colfer does know where his towel is. And for Zark’s sake, listen to it read by Simon Jones!

Avagy szörföltem a Bookline-on…

“Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so” – The Hitchhiker’s Guide To the G

“Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so” – The Hitchhiker’s Guide To the Galaxy.

Time was always flexible in the hands of the late Douglas Adams. Well known for his intimate distrust of deadlines (“I love the whooshing noise they make as they fly by”, as he famously once said) and his spectacular bouts of writer’s block, he was thus an incorrigible procrastinator of the first order when it came to writing, and, on occasion, apparently had to be locked into a hotel room in order to complete the final draft of whichever novel he was writing at the time, only to be let out at intervals by his publisher for ’supervised’ walks in case he should try to make a run for it!

He was, however, also a complete and utter genius. And I’m not the only one who reckons so; not by a factor of at least 15 million worldwide – as wildly improbable as that may sound (and, after that, anything you still can’t cope with is therefore your own problem, as Trillian so wisely puts it). His books are held in great affection by people of all ages, all across the galaxy, and have now been translated into more than thirty languages (presumably not including Vogon, as they lack all sense of poetry).

The story of how this rather tall, very funny and, sadly, now equally late genius came to write the cult classic Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy novels, which celebrated their thirtieth anniversary on October 12th, is (unsurprisingly) equally unreliable time-wise. There are several versions of the moment inspiration struck, some which are more true than others. To a given value of true, of course.

The best (and least true) version of this creation myth tells of how the young Douglas had been hitching round Europe sometime in the early 1970s with the aid of a book entitled The Hitch-hiker’s Guide To Europe, which was only of limited help as his language skills weren’t up to much and he couldn’t make himself understood half the time.

Despite this, he managed to get roaringly drunk one night, and – just before he passed out in the middle of an Austrian field – he was suddenly inspired as he watched the stars coming out in the night sky. With classic drunken illogic, it occurred to him that someone ought to write a helpful hitch-hiker’s guide to the galaxy too, because, as he put it later, “then I, for one, would be off like a shot”.

Nice story – but not exactly true, according to his friends.

Whatever the real, actual truth of the matter, it can safely be concluded that the idea for what became The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy occurred to Douglas Adams at some point in the early 1970s, and that it was a slightly silly idea that he rather liked. He had, however, already been responsible for quite a bit of high-quality silliness well before the advent of the original Hitchhiker’s Guide radio series in 1978….

Born in the famous university city of Cambridge in 1952, Douglas Noel Adams (his initials of DNA eventually seemed quite apt, considering his later love of science and environmentalism) was, like many writers, a scribbler from an early age; contributing spoof reviews and more serious stuff to his school magazine as a boy. He applied and was accepted to read English at St John’s College, Cambridge – a choice made for decidedly un-academic and very pragmatic reasons.

Why? Because Douglas wanted to join Footlights, the infamous Cambridge student amateur theatrical company, which was (and still is) famed for producing large numbers of popular and successful actors, comedians, satirists and writers. Apart from Douglas, its alumni include an unfeasibly long list of well-known figures, such as Graham Chapman, Tim Brooke-Taylor, John Cleese, Peter Cook, David Frost, Stephen Fry, Germaine Greer, Eric Idle, Miriam Margolyes, Hugh Laurie, David Mitchell, Griff Rhys Jones, Emma Thompson, Bill Oddie and Sandi Toksvig.

And it was one of these Footlights luminaries who ‘discovered’ Douglas’s comic talents, not long after his graduation in 1974.

Having seen Douglas’s contributions to that year’s Footlights Revue, Graham Chapman of Monty Python fame was impressed enough to ask the young writer to collaborate with him, both on Python and non-Python material. The net result of this (Python geeks, pay attention), was that Douglas became the first and only non-Python ever to receive a writing credit on the show. He also made two fleeting appearances in the fourth series of Monty Python’s Flying Circus; all of which appears to have very much informed his humour and his writing style.

However, it was his next major project that was to change everything for him – and for fans of sci-fi and comedy everywhere.

Although Douglas didn’t know it at the time, the impact of this new project was going to be akin to the effects of drinking one too many Pan-Galactic Gargleblasters on a night out with Zaphod Beeblebrox (and both his heads). This new project was going to be more successful, and become even more legendary than his later stint as a script writer and editor on the BBC’s iconic sci-fi series, Dr Who. This new project was the original radio series of Hitchhicker’s Guide To The Galaxy, which was first broadcast in 1978. The popularity of this, and the subsequent second series, led to demands for a book, which obligingly appeared in October 1979; followed by four more at appropriate intervals (or five, if you count the posthumously published and incomplete novel The Salmon Of Doubt, which had yet to make up its mind whether it was to be a Hitchhiker’s sequel or a new Dirk Gently book).

This ‘trilogy in five parts’ (“a poor grasp of arithmatic”, is how Douglas explained away this strange bit of maths) soon had a loyal cult following, which increased in size with every passing year – and is still attracting new followers three decades on, as each generation discovers its comedy genius.

Hitchhiker’s rapidly became a distinctly multi-media phenomenon (long before this sort of approach was cynically picked up on and manipulated by modern marketing types); the original radio series eventually spawning said novels, plus a TV series, a computer game, a number of stage adaptations, several official towels (for hoopy froods only, of course), and – in 2005 – the long-awaited film, starring The Office’s Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent, and US hip-hop artist Mos Def as Arthur’s best friend, Ford Prefect.

So even Douglas’s death of a heart attack at the ridiculously young age of 49 seems not to have stopped the steady stream of sparkly new Hitchhiker’s goodies, with the latest in this multitude of hoopiness emerging only yesterday.

As part of the thirtieth anniversary celebrations, a brand-new Hitchhiker’s book has been published, written by Eoin Colfer, the Irish author of the hugely popular Artemis Fowl novels for teenagers. Colfer was given the job with the blessing of Douglas’s family, mainly, it seems, because the Adams’ daughter, Polly is an admirer of his books – although it is not going to be an easy job to satisfy all the long-time, passionate, and highly possessive Hitchhiker’s fans out there (like me – I’m making no comment until I’ve actually read the damn thing!).

Although Douglas had often spoken of wanting to write a sixth book in the trilogy, this is not a case of the relatively common literary practice of other writers completing an almost-finished work after its original author’s death – this is a brand, spanking new tale set in the Hitchhiker’s universe; and this time, it features the return of Arthur Dent’s snotty teenage daughter, Random, whose adventures appear to be an attempt to give the series the more upbeat ending its creator had wanted, according to reviews.

It seems that thirty years on from the first novel, and despite Douglas’s unfeasibly early death in 2001, this series of books are clearly as popular as ever. Which begs the question – why? What makes these books so infinitely readable and re-readable? What’s so special about a deeply silly space opera, full of really bad, geeky jokes in base 13, and with a cast list of an Everyman, a chronically depressed robot, several towels, two white mice and a selection of utterly ridiculous aliens who write bad poetry?

In my view, it is at least partially because most of the characters are comfortingly recognisable, almost archetypal – they are immediately identifiable as examples the different types of people we meet and interact with every day. Arthur is your classic, very English ‘man on the Clapham omnibus’, nondescript and ordinary. Ford is trying too hard to be something he’s not, a bit like many human teenagers. Marvin is that one whingy friend everyone has; the one who’s always complaining about something. Zaphod is that egocentric idiot posing down the gym who quite obviously fancies himself. The computer on the Heart of Gold is everyone’s mum – and the Vogons are everyone’s bullying, jobsworth bosses (the petty bureaucrats of the galaxy). I like the fact that even the aliens seem very human; a suggestion that we are all more alike than we may think. You’ll all have met at least one Vogon at some point, at least…

However, Douglas’s female characters suffer from being thoroughly two-dimensional and much less memorable than their male counterparts, which is my only major quibble about this most paradoxically sharp and funny of all comedies. Sure, it has its minor faults and a selection of oddities and strangenesses – for a start, it’s a comedy set in space rather than funny sci-fi, it’s very English and very middle class, the plotting is a bit weak in some of the later books, and every version of the story (radio, books, TV, film) is different, often in some significant ways. I’m also aware of people who consider it to be too smug for its own good, something which, at times, can’t be denied.

But the Hitchhiker’s trilogy is far better than that makes it sound. This is a series that quite clearly manages to be far, far more than the sum of its parts. It skewers life, the universe and everything with a sharp and silly wit, and is not afraid to confront the big issues like intergalactic politics and a sudden lack of dolphins – this is unashamedly part-comedy, part-satire and part-environmentalism. Conservation and environmentalism became crucial, central themes of the books; after all, this is a series that begins with the complete destruction of the Earth, blown to smithereens by an alien road-widening project.

For me, odd as it may sound to some, these are comfort books. I re-read the complete series once every couple of years or so, but the Hitchhiker’s trilogy are also books I can turn to when I need a familiar, funny and much-loved story to cocoon me in its silliness, when I need to escape from the stress and worry of the real world. For a few hours anyway.

Because that’s what the best stories can do.

And the story of Arthur Dent’s attempts to deal with the fact that his home and the Earth have been demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass (and the fact that he can’t find a decent cup of tea in the whole of the galaxy) is one such good story. It’s a story of an ordinary man finding himself in extraordinary, yet strangely recognisable situations – with the exotic and the mundane placed side by side by Douglas’s overactive imagination. We can all sympathise and identify with Arthur’s bemusement, confusion and understandable sarcasm, all while simultaneously finding the gently familiar but frustrating comedy in his disgruntled and bewildering adventures through a life he just doesn’t recognise any more.

Which is a bit like living on Earth in the 21st century, really…

“In many of the more relaxed civilizations on the Outer Eastern Rim of the Galaxy, the Hitch-Hiker’s Guide has already supplanted the great Encyclopaedia Galactica as the standard repository of all knowledge and wisdom, for though it has many omissions and contains much that is apocryphal, or at least wildly inaccurate, it scores over the older, more pedestrian work in two important respects. First, it is slightly cheaper; and secondly it has the words DON’T PANIC inscribed in large friendly letters on its cover” – The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy.

Threadsy claims to be the world’s first integrated communication client. They group all of your Twitter, Facebook, and email messages into one smooth console. Although kinda buggy, this is something I would actually use. It’s a nice dashboard that you can login to and manage multiple threads. Read all about it at: http://blogs.zdnet.com/weblife/?p=915&tag=nl.e019 and read the posts after the article to learn about competing services, Digsby and Trillian
