<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p style="text-align:justify;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1082" title="archive" src="http://tsor.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/archive.jpg" alt="archive" width="447" height="200" />Niemal pół roku temu, recenzując nowowydany wtedy album Archive <em>Controlling Crowds</em>, wspomniałem, że zespół zapowiedział, że to, co od nich otrzymaliśmy, nie jest kompletną całością. Ich koncepcja zakładała dzieło czteroczęściowe, a brakującą na wiosennym wydawnictwie czwartą część mieliśmy otrzymać w roku następnym. Udało się jednak wydać materiał nieco wcześniej, dzięki czemu już od kilku tygodni możemy się cieszyć jedenastoma nowymi utworami od Archive, zamykającymi nieukończone dotąd dzieło.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Po bardzo dokładnym zapoznaniu się z częściami I-III wiedziałem już, czego mogę się spodziewać po ostatniej. Byłem ciekaw, czy zespół utrzyma formę, ale nie obawiałem się szczególnie o to, że wyda coś „na siłę” – od początku mówili, jak wiele mają materiału, nie różnicowali go na właściwy album i odrzuty z sesji, a to, co nie wpasowało się w koncepcję, po prostu dorzucili do pierwszego wydawnictwa jako bonusowe utwory, cztery miniatury, dopracowane i zaprezentowane fanom oddzielnie, na dodatkowym krążku.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Kwestia treści pozostawała zagadką – trzecia część z jednej strony mogła stanowić jakieś zakończenie, ale w gruncie rzeczy nie odbierała zespołowi możliwości kontynuowania całej opowieści i snucia dodatkowych przemyśleń.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Niełatwym zadaniem jest ocena czwartej części jako mniejszej całości. Wprawdzie jest to prawie pięćdziesiąt minut muzyki, ale już sam początek płyty – <em>Pills</em> &#8211; wyraźnie pokazuje, że jest to kontynuacja, a nie nowa historia. Muzyka rozbrzmiewa w pierwszej sekundzie bez żadnej zapowiedzi, intra, po prostu zaczyna się tak, jakby trwała już w najlepsze od co najmniej kilku utworów. I płynie nieprzerwanie aż do końca – wszystkie kompozycje łączą się ze sobą.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Materiał utrzymuje poziom reprezentowany przez pierwsze trzy części. <em>Part IV</em> nie różni się znacznie, ale nie jest też powtórką z rozrywki. <strong>Maria Q</strong>, otwierająca krążek utworem <em>Pills</em>, prezentuje swoje wokalne możliwości w utworze utrzymanym w stylu ostatnich osiągnięć Archive, ale, paradoksalnie, trudnym do porównania z jakimkolwiek konkretnym dotąd wydanym przez zespół utworem. Zaskakiwać może nieco rozbujane, drapieżne <em>Lines</em>, łączące rap z wokalami wyznaczającymi refren. Wybrane na singiel <em>The Empty Bottle</em> porywa płynnością. <em>Remove</em> szybko wpada w ucho dzięki chwytliwej melodii, ale zbrodnią byłoby nie pochwalenie świetnego tła, jakie budują w tym utworze organy Hammonda. <em>The Feeling of Losing Everything</em> to z kolei utwór zahaczający nieco o stylistykę musicalową. <em>Blood in Numbers</em> przyciąga uwagę dziwnym, z pozoru nie pasującym do muzyki wokalem, jednak po kilku kontaktach z płytą nie umiałbym już wyobrazić sobie tej kompozycji z innym brzmieniem. <em>To the End</em> to kolejna niespodzianka – cichy fortepian i spokojny wokal przeradza się tu stopniowo w podniosły, wielogłosowy hymn, co ma zresztą swoje odzwierciedlenie w tekście – płynnie przechodzącym od prozaicznych drobiazgów do głównego przesłania utworu. Dwie miniatury zamykające album &#8211; <em>Pictures</em> i <em>Lunar Bender</em> na początku wywołały u mnie zdziwienie – kończą album tak spokojnie, minimalistycznie, bez wielkich fajerwerków, że wręcz pozostawiają niedosyt. Jednak słuchając <em>Controlling Crowds</em> w całości można zauważyć, że to <em>To the End</em>, jako ten patetyczny utwór niosący rozwiązanie sztuki i najważniejsze odpowiedzi, stanowi rzeczywisty finał. Dwa ostatnie utwory pojawiają się po chwili ciszy i pełnią funkcję epilogu – oszczędnego w tekście jak i muzyce, dopełniającego to, co w finale już zostało powiedziane, ostatecznie zamykającego całość.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Tak więc także tekstowo część czwarta jest kontynuacją i zamknięciem. Jeśli komuś wydawało się, że <em>Funeral</em>, kończący trzecią część jest wystarczającym rozwiązaniem, to tutaj nie tylko dowie się nieco więcej, lecz też odnajdzie kilka odpowiedzi, na stawiane przez teksty pytania. Integracja warstwy lirycznej i muzycznej jest chyba jeszcze silniejsza niż w poprzednich tekstach, w dodatku wokaliści w interpretacji swoich partii brzmią naturalnie, szczerze i emocjonalnie, co oczywiście jeszcze bardziej podkreśla wydźwięk każdego utworu.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Właściwie trudno mi wskazać jakikolwiek mankament części czwartej. Wszystko, co zaprezentowało w niej Archive podoba mi się bez zastrzeżeń i wskazać potrafię tylko jeden brak – na jedenaście utworów, tylko w jednym możemy usłyszeć Marię Q. To mało, szczególnie, że na cztery części składające się z dwudziestu czterech  kompozycji Maria udziela się tylko w trzech z nich. Pozostaje nam nadzieja, że usłyszymy jej więcej w kolejnych projektach.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><em>Part IV</em> dobrze sprawdza się w słuchaniu oddzielnie, jako mała całość, jednak najlepiej wypada jako element całości stanowionej przez wszystkie cztery części. <em>Controlling Crowds</em> to prawdziwa muzyczna uczta, zaopatrzona w wielki ładunek emocjonalny i dopracowaną treść godną lepszego poznania, interpretacji i przemyślenia. Archive udało się stworzyć dzieło spójne, o równym, wysokim poziomie, na dodatek bogate w szczegóły, ukazujące się uważnemu słuchaczowi stopniowo, w miarę dokładnego zapoznawania się z muzyką. W mojej opinii jest to tegoroczna <em>pozycja obowiązkowa</em> i zarazem muzyka, która ma wszystko, czego potrzeba, by przetrwać każdą próbę czasu.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p><strong>When <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trip_hop">trip-hop</a> became safe music that were played by the litterati at the vernissages and the slams, pioneered by the assault of Massive Attack onto the pop charts, one of the former members was working on an album that was going to turn my head.</strong></p>
<p>Adrian Thaws, also known as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tricky">Tricky</a>, released the album in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxinquaye">Maxinquaye</a>, a swirling dark record that took from a bit of everywhere into a experience akin to the wall of sound made famous by Phil Spectre in the seventies. Swoshing beats, industrial patter, mechanical clangs blend on the record to form something quite unique.</p>

<p>This is a record that’s stayed with me since I bought it in 1995. I’ve had to replace it a few times, but it still has a given place in my CD-rack, or any CD rack that wants to call itself eclectic.</p>
<p>I’m happy that it is being re-released now, because it will allow younger generations to discover the record, and inspire because it’s up there with more popular artists’ records that lay claim to be groundbreaking. Prince’s Purple rain comes to mind.</p>

<p>Mardi soir avait lieu le concert de <strong>Massive Attack</strong> au zénith de Paris. Absent depuis plusieurs année sur scène, le groupe revient sur scène pour célébrer leur mini-album <strong><em>Splitting The Atom</em></strong>! Et également pour promouvoir la sortie du prochain album, <em><strong>Weather Underground</strong>, </em>puisque des chansons jouées dans ce concert en sont issues.</p>
<p>Il faut déjà savoir que <strong>Massive Attack</strong> est groupe particulier, pas du tout comme les autres. Aux concerts de <strong>Massive Attack</strong>, vous n&#8217;allez pas remuer comme des malades sur des sons bougeant! Du tout du tout! Si, il faut le reconnaitre, le son est souvent dense et puissant, cette musique s&#8217;écoute avant tout posément, sans se poser de question, en sachant se laissant porter par les sonorités intenses qui vous assaillissent. D&#8217;ailleurs la plupart des personnes qui assistaient au concert restaient immobiles, comme absorbés par la prestation du groupe.</p>

<p>On se surprend soi-même à être transporté dans une autre sphère, très agréable par ailleurs. C&#8217;est ainsi que l&#8217;on pourrait définir la musique de <strong>Massive Attack</strong> : absorbante, fascinante voire délirante à certains moments. C&#8217;est en tout cas le ressenti que j&#8217;ai eu en écoutant la prestation.</p>
<p>Après une première partie plutôt molle, le concert démarre violemment avec une intro fondée sur des sonorités très particulières, à la limite de l&#8217;électro répétée avec intensité. La prestation du groupe est franchement maitrisée musicalement. Aucune fausse note, les morceaux s&#8217;enchaînent en une quasi-perfection. La particularité du groupe est de compter sur scène un nombre de membres impressionnant, permettant de varier les sons, les voix, etc.</p>

<p>On notera peut-être comme fausse note l&#8217;interprétation timide du titre-phare <em>Teardrop </em>qui, comme le dit Xidius, reste meilleure dans sa version studio, sublime. En revanche, l&#8217;autre titre très connu et reconnu de <strong>Massive Attack</strong>, <em>Unfinished Sympathy, </em>a été joué et a été un moment très fort, en fin de concert. Les autres titres qui m&#8217;ont scotché, <em>Marrakesh</em>, issu du prochain album, et <em>Inertia Creeps, </em>assez connue<em>, </em>elle aussi très intense et hypnotique.</p>
<p>De plus, l&#8217;écran, à la fois simple et de taille réduite,  donne cependant un aspect, une coloration particulière aux chansons. Il plonge le spectateur dans l&#8217;ambiance même de la musique.</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">If Shirley Bassey went on a 12 month opiate binge &#38; linked up with the Rza during her withdrawal period, you get Portishead.  My uncle Paul put me on to this group in 1997 &#38; this album has been a part of me since.  Sometimes in hip-hop there are certain albums that producers will not touch due to the projects inability to be made hotter.  I am really surprised some of these underground cats haven&#8217;t attacked this album &#38; chopped it for all its worth, leaving nothing behind except deteriorated bass lines &#38; filtered out vocals.  DO NOT let this post be your introduction to ruining something that is already perfect.  The album sparks with &#8220;Cowboys&#8221;, a rugged never smooth compilation of wailing guitars, choppy pulsating rhodes chords, a ride symbol that must have been hit with the tip of a knife, and something that sounds like Godzilla moaning as a bass line. It automatically shoots chills down your spine when Beth Gibbons opens with &#8220;Did you sweep us far from your feet?/ reset in stone, this stark belief/&#8221;.</p>
<p style="text-align:center;">Tributes to hip-hop break beats, dope scratches, filtered samples, and excellent engineering make this album one of my favorites of all time in any genre.  You cannot exactly pin point the musical family you would find this album a part of, which is one of the qualities that make it so dope.  The beat from &#8220;Elysium&#8221; drops at 0:12 and it might be one of the hardest tracks that came out in 1997.  &#8220;Over&#8221; was an all time favorite for Little Vic when I used to puffa-lotta-pot.  Being completely obsessed with music since I was able to understand it, I always made sure I had a dope stereo system rigged up in my bedroom.  That song would blast holes in my 12 inch Sansui&#8217;s &#38; devastate my 15 inch Pioneers until my neighbors were humming the melody.  You might NOT want to listen to Portishead if you take mushrooms&#8230;I mean&#8230;I wouldn&#8217;t know&#8230;but&#8230;yeah&#8230;anyhow.  &#8220;Seven Months&#8221; always reminded me of a Bond theme.  When those 1/16 triplet boom baps hit at 0:25, you have no choice but to bob your head like you are dodging bullets from Francisco Scaramanga&#8217;s barrel.</p>
<p style="text-align:center;">Besides Beth&#8217;s lyrics being completely insane, depressing, eerie, chilling &#38; all the other things we love&#8230;the production is not to be fucked with for lack of better words.  If I could completely bite someone&#8217;s entire style &#38; call it my own&#8230; it would be Portishead&#8217;s.  The group split a few years ago, which really got me tight.  I would love to hear what type of insanity would be coming out of their studio today.  I can only imagine.  What I do know is that I will pursue them &#38; offer them my first born child to produce a song for me&#8230;(Kidding.)</p>

<p>When Massive Attack played the Zenith in Paris last night, they pulled ticked all 3 boxes on my scorecard (even if some people behind me could only tick off 2).</p>
<p>Earplugs. I forgot earplugs. Ever since working in that shitty Australian bar down south, my ears ring and sometimes it feels like I am wearing a sock on one ear.</p>
<p>Kandy, our friend who had calmed down a lot since getting stoned two minutes ago, had found a tissue and stuffed it into her ears.</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;Can I have some of that tissue,&#8221;</strong> I asked.</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;What?&#8221;</strong></p>
<p><strong>&#8220;The tissue. Can I have some tissue?&#8221;</strong></p>
<p><strong>&#8220;Je ne comprends pas.&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>Well of course you bloody well don&#8217;t &#8211; you have tissue in your ear and you can&#8217;t hear me properly.</p>
<p>During summer, I met a guy who had done an MBA and had hit on an idea he was not at all passionate about, but that he believed was going to make him rich. It was to sell deee-luxe earplugs at clubs and concerts, for $25 a pop no less, and they were going to come in a neat little box.</p>
<p>Good luck to him, but tissues, which come wrapped in plastic in denominations of 25, and cost about 50 cents, work just fine, with the added bonus you can discard them at leisure.</p>
<p>Listening to a live gigs with ear plugs is not necessarily a worse experience, but it is certainly different, and, for electronic music, often even better. The treble sounds are muted and you become much more aware of the bass. This can be good, since I find shrieking sounds unpleasant to listen to.</p>
<p>I snatched the tissue from Kandy&#8217;s fingers.</p>
<p><strong>The genre-defying experience</strong></p>
<p>Massive Attack like to say they are a genre defying group that cannot be classified. Everyone else said: &#8220;yeah, woteva, we&#8217;re going to dub your genre as Trip-Hop, regardless of how many groups are doing it.&#8221;</p>
<p>I say that it&#8217;s electronic, which was potentially going to pose a problem for the show&#8230;After all, when was the last time you say a decent electronic live act, not playing at a club?</p>
<p>The thing is that watching two skinny guys twiddling knobs isn&#8217;t necessarily that special. Hell, even the homeless man outside Monoprix was doing it last night, and that was just a one-man show.</p>
<p>Case in point, Justice playing the Zenith at Montpellier, 2007. Two guys, a crowded basketball stadium, and not a lot else happening. It was like watching mixed netball at high school.</p>
<p>Massive Attack, however, normally just two guys with a lot of friends, had no less than six on stage at any time, the number of musicians required to not just replicate their sound, but write it large for the live show.</p>
<p>They did a good job of it, event if, due to the tissues, the sock and the alcohol, or a combination, the notes lacked distinction. What they didn&#8217;t lack was force &#8211; each beat pulsed through like a heartbeat.</p>
<p><strong>Lights go on</strong></p>
<p>The lighting was effective. The showpiece was a large backboard of small leds (presumably), that flashed as bars of light, transformed into giant television screens, or screamed headlines and power words.</p>
<p>In fact, it was too effective. Not content making powerful music, the group had combined every song with a, not necessarily related, political message.</p>
<p>Hence for their opening number, the backboard started listing the price of the cost of living compared to wages, moving from the mundane to the increasingly extravagant.</p>
<p>Biscuits: 4 pounds</p>

<p>Private jet hire in the Gulf: 375,000,000**</p>
<p>Getting fondled by uncle while sleeping off a Christmas food coma: <img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-720" title="http://www.joke-pages.com " src="http://arbourman.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/pricelesspictures287.jpg?w=300" alt="http://www.joke-pages.com " width="300" height="214" />Priceless!!!</p>
<p>In a different song, the screen displayed words such as &#8220;RAPE&#8221;, &#8220;BEATINGS&#8221;, &#8220;GREED&#8221;, &#8220;BLACK&#8221;. I think it was called &#8220;Happy Song,&#8221; or perhaps, &#8220;<a href="http://www.theage.com.au/lifestyle/people/mike-tyson-in-scuffle-at-la-airport-20091112-icjp.html">MIKE TYSON</a>&#8220;.</p>
<p>In fact, it was tiring to look at. Tiring to either read the text or listen to the music. As a male, I cannot be expected to do both, I am told.</p>
<p>However, by the time, one hour later, the group performed a song that was accompanied by text representing the departure lounge of an airport, I was starting to understand the connection &#8211; I felt like I was at the business end of a long-haul flight; the moment when you&#8217;ve already watched 5 films in miniature including Transformers. Twice.</p>
<p><strong>I see dead people</strong></p>
<p>What was the rest of the audience doing throughout? I turned 180 degrees, and saw dead people. &#8220;I can really feel a connection with you tonight,&#8221; the singer told the audience. Was this psychic <a href="http://www.johnedward.net/">John Edward&#8217;s</a> latest reincarnation, as an electronica musician?</p>
<p>How disheartening for the group, to be putting so much energy into a performance with only minimal reaction from the audience.</p>
<p>It was surely even less reassuring that when they finally did get an enormous repsonse, with foot stamping and all, it was for walking off stage after playing their last song.</p>
<p>I fished the tissue from my ear for the encore. Even if the group hadn&#8217;t played to deafening approval, they had a least been met with muted satisfaction.</p>

<p>ich hör ihn nicht sonderlich oft und der ein oder andere wird sich wundern, dass sowas überhaupt von mir kommt. aber wenn ich was in der richtung an mich ranlasse, dann isses <a href="http://tychomusic.com/" target="blank">tycho</a>! unfassbar gut! kann einen entweder krass zu boden ziehen oder übertrieben beflügeln. je nach stimmung halt.</p>

<p>ebenfalls ist der typ als <a href="http://iso50.com/iso50.html" target="blank">iso50</a> für mich ein grafik/design/typo-gott! unbedingt mal seinen kram checken, wenn&#8217;s interessiert.</p>
