Das britische Electro/TripHop Duo Soulsavers begründete auf “It’s not how far you fall, it’s the way you land” die Zusammenarbeit mit Mark Lanegan, welcher früher unter anderem Sänger der Screaming Trees und Mitglied der Queens of the Stone Age war.

Im Vergleich zum Vorgänger “Tough guys don’t dance” klingt “It’s not how far you fall…” weniger elektronisch, was sicher auch an Mark Lanegan – welcher ja auch mehrere Soloalben, welche in die Blues/Folk sparte gehen, veröffentlichte – liegt. Das unterstreicht auch der Opener “Revival” mit seinem Gospelchor und der sparsamen Instrumentierung. Doch das Album versteht es durchaus, einen zu packen. Die Anleihen an religiösen Themen, das Flehen nach Hilfe des früher drogenabhängigen und von Albträumen gebeutelten Lanegan geben dem Ganzen eine irrsinnige Tiefe, welche einem in Verbindung mit Textzeilen wie “Jesus, oh Jesus, i don’t want to die alone” einen kalten Schauer über den Rücken gehen lassen.

Für “It’s not how far you fall, it’s the way you land” braucht man anfangs sicherlich etwas Überwindung. Wer sich aber darauf einlässt, wird mit einer der besten CDs der letzten Jahre belohnt.

I love the accent! When I had this web project in Ortigas, I sneaked out in one of the drives and saw this mp3 folder named Euro Rock.. I’m a thief! I copied those files to my iPod =) cool finds..

this time it was a somehow serious situation because it marked the spot of the death of my former alias ‘FX-INTRUDER’ and the birth of my current alias ‘hell g.’ .

While the is no reference to the late comedian Andy Kaufman, if you were to turn his energy from performance into a soundtrack, Kid Cudi’s Man On The Moon: The End Of Day could represent literal translation. Its obscure lyrics and cosmic tune, layered with multiple beats and distorted synth show strong among piano guitar and various instruments, with recurring narration from artist Common.

Cleveland born Kid Cudi has jumped on the 21st century hiphop game, and his incredible debut has projected itself into the world, just creeping in to the end of the decade. Yet it’s hard to restrict this record to hiphop as it follows along the same route as albums from The XX, Ratatat and the electro powers of 808 And Heartbreaks, genre-d somewhere in between trip hop, electronic, and psychedelic rock. That’s not to say he dominates in a playing field of his own, but it’s hard to compare Kid Cudi to Kanye West’s latest, or DJ Shadow’s best. Its routes go far back as UNKLE or Jedi Mind Tricks, with Kanye’s influence splattered all over the record.

The strongest points of the record come from singles that you may have heard a million times now if you get out enough. “Day N Nite” is the easiest to listen to and appreciate, while the awesome “Pusuit Of Happiness” gives off the better example of the record, of which I think was influenced by the movie with Will Smith, based on the life of Chris Gardiner. A fantastic movie produces a fantastic track. Like the artwork implies, Man On The Moon: The End Of Day is like something out of this world. For an easy escape from the woes of life for an hour this record has you covered, though once you get there you may never want to return from what Kid Cudi offers.

I ♥ techno: diluvienne / Mélanie

When I was doing my doctorate in Ottawa I went through a huge techno phase as it was called back then. All the university radio DJs played it like crazy, in both French and English.

So happy I was when I found this CBC Ottawa streaming channel, called ‘The Chill Lounge’ on Cable.

Seems to be a good mix of laid back, atmospheric stuff without getting too angry or odd.

Otro grupo de trip-hop que se me cuela al blog. Nomás que esta vez son de LA.

Se llama Bitter:Sweet. Es un dúo que hace poco entró al Top 10 de ventas de iTunes, y su música ha protagonizado pelis como The Devil Wears Prada, Because I Said So o Shoot ‘Em Up y series como Law and Order, Grey’s Anatomy y Lipstick Jungle.

Particuarmente su último disco, Drama, me parece una mezcla exquisita entre el pop bailable y ligero californiano y un trip-hop electrónico de altísima calidad. Sin duda es lo ideal pa relajarse cualquier día. A mi particularmente siempre se me antoja un helado cuando los oigo.

La rola que les dejo es el tema de Lipstick Jungle. Cuándo lo vi en la serie tuvo probablemente el mismo efecto que debe tener para algunos oír otra rola de Arjona en una novela. Me cagó que la escogieran. Pero sin duda es una excelente pieza pa mover sus huesitos.

this week I wanna start with a 3-in-1-Remix-Package of mine so that yall may forget the general awkwardness of mondays…
these tunes were from the first remixcontest I ever participated in 1999 and it was for my favourite hiphop-group, the Beastie Boys.

I remixed their track ‘Alive’ from their compilation album ‘Beastie Boys Anthology – The Sounds Of Science’ and I got completely mad while remixing. I had so many ideas, that I made 3 completely different remixes of ‘Alive’ and here they come just for you:

Version 1:
My first version is a solid-grooving dopebeat/funky-breaks/hiphop-mix of ‘Alive’ featuring aswell myself rapping a distorted verse in german under the alias of ‘Hoellen-G’. In that time I had also a small german hiphop-project running named ‘A, D & Hoellen-G’ where I stole that verse from.
this remix also features the good old apache-break again aswell as some nice vocal cuts and heavy pitching-action.

Version 2:
This version is way more experimental than the first. I was experimenting with 3/4 beats and robotized raps that I used as melody parts. later on the tune turns into fat, distorted and chopped-up 4/4 dopebeats and breaks back into 3/4 count at the end. you can file that remix under lofi-illbient-triphop-dopebeats.
Beastie Boys – Alive (hell g’s Brand Nu Hype Remix)

Version 3:
I needed to let the dogs out completely and thats what I did in this aggressive rolling jungle version. I was influenced by Dj Zinc, the Ganja Kru and also stuff from Digital Hardcore Recordings and this is what mostly makes the vibes in this harsh version.
this remix features again the amen-break in several distorted, filtered and chopped-up variations.

this weeks oldie is the youngest oldie I´ve posted so far.
it´s from my 2003/04 unofficial album-release ‘total consuming satisfaction’ and the tune is called ‘u took my love’.

stylistic it ranges from downtempo/dopebeats to illbient/triphop and has lots of shifty bassline-action, electro-laden synths & sounds and robotized vocoder-vocals.

Album “Maxinquaye” Tricky’ego, który wpisał się w na stałę w kanon arcydzieł trip-hopu, doczeka się reedycji. Poza odświeżonym materiałem muzycznym, w nowej wersji znajdziemy też kilka tzw. “extrasów”.

Na nowym “Maxinquaye” znajdą się oryginalne nagrania oraz zestaw remiksów, jak to zwykle w przypadku tego typu wydawnictw bywa.

Reedycja kultowego krążka będzie miała premierę 2 listopada.

Jak informowaliśmy jakiś czas temu, producent Portishead, multiinstrumentalista Geoff Barrow na początku tego roku założył nowy zespół – Beak>. Towarzyszą mu dwaj bristolscy muzycy – Billy Fuller i Matt Williams. Ich debiutancki krążek jest już gotowy.

Pojawi się 19 października nakładem wytwórni Invada, która należy do Barrowa. Oficyna Ipecac wyda płytę dzień później na terenie Stanów Zjednoczonych.

Wielu może zastanawiać się jak to możliwe, że Barrow – perfekcjonista, który kazał na nowy krążek Portishead czekać ponad dziesięć lat, stworzył debiut Beak> tak szybko? Magazyn internetowy Pitchfork wyjaśnia tę kwestię.

Grupa Beak> ma bardzo rygorystyczne zasady. Trio nagrywa całą swoją muzykę w jednym pokoju i nie używa overdubów (dogranie części wokalnej lub instrumentalnej do wcześniej już nagranego materiału). Zespół napisał cały swój album podczas 12-dniowej sesji. “To naprawdę dobre tworzyć muzykę na zupełnie innych warunkach, niż robiło się to do tej pory” – skomentował system nagrywania Barrow.
