Sorry I haven’t been around lately.  After the wedding, the visitors, the honeymoon and the job stress, I wound up taking a small hiatus from knitting.  I made some Christmas ornaments for family members.  Now, I’m preparing to go back to NY for Christmas and while they enjoy their snowstorm, I know I am going to freeze.  Living in Southwest Florida has been a blessing for me, but has spoiled me to cold weather.  I used a pattern from ravelry to make a floppy beret to keep my head warm and wanted to make a scarf that would go.

This is my Triple Cabled Scarf made with Plymouth Alpaca Prima yarn double strandled with size 10 straight needles.  I am in love with this scarf!  The yarn had been in my collection for well over a year, waiting for the perfect project.  Thank you Gabriella’s Yarn Shop  for this!  She no longer has this in stock, but she has many many great yarns.

Cabled Gauge 18 stitches x 4 in  /      4 rows x 1 in

C4F = hold 2 stitches to front with cable needle.  Knit 2 from left needle, then knit 2 from cable needle to create left twisting 4 stitch cable.

We went from DES to Triple-DES (3DES), so it might seem we skipped Double-DES. We did. Double-DES has a key length of 112 bits, but there is a specific attack against Double-DES that reduces its work factor to about the same as DES. Thus, it is no more secure than DES. So let’s move on to 3DES.

Many successful attacks against DES and the realization that the useful lifetime of DES was about up brought much support for 3DES. NIST knew that a new standard had to be created, which ended up being AES, but a quick fix was needed in the meantime to provide more protection for sensitive data. The result: 3DES.

3DES uses 48 rounds in its computation, which makes it highly resistant to differential cryptanalysis. However, because of the extra work 3DES performs, there is a heavy performance hit. It can take up to three times longer than DES to perform encryption and decryption.

Although NIST has selected the Rijndael algorithm to replace DES as the AES, NIST and others expect 3DES to be around and used for quite some time.

3DES can work in different modes, and the mode chosen dictates the number of keys used and what functions are carried out:

• DES-EEE3 Uses three different keys for encryption, and the data are encrypted, encrypted, encrypted.

• DES-EDE3 Uses three different keys for encryption, and the data are encrypted, decrypted, and encrypted.

• DES-EEE2 The same as DES-EEE3 but uses only two keys, and the first and third encryption processes use the same key.

• DES-EDE2 The same as DES-EDE3 but uses only two keys, and the first and third encryption processes use the same key.

EDE may seem a little odd at first. How much protection could be provided by encrypting something, decrypting it, and encrypting it again? The decrypting portion here is decrypted with a different key. When data are encrypted with one symmetric key and decrypted with a different symmetric key, it is jumbled even more. So the data are not actually decrypted in the middle function, they are just run through a decryption process with a different key. Pretty tricky.

Heya ppl. Your friendly neighbourhood wide eyed cyclist  offering another update on Project: Carbonize My Ride!!! I swear I made the biggest newbie mistake ever… *groan*

So here I was bringing my bike and frame (picture cycling on 1 bike, with the frame <handlebars n forks all attached> slung across my back. Wasn’t pretty…) to Soon Seng to swap the parts over. And horror of all horrors, the mechanic told me that my front derailleur bracket that was attached to the carbon frame was a braze-on version, while the 0ne coming off my Merida was a clamp on version. So it can’t be done without me getting a new braze on front Derailleur, and he didn’t have any. So I had to cycle home (again, not pretty) thoroughly defeated and disheartened by the experience… Was super damn sad, but my never-say-die attitude kicked in..

This time, I decided to send my bike into another bike shop… Rodalink in the east. Rodalink is the distributor of Shimano parts… so I figured that if they didn’t have the ability to get the part, who did? So happily (this time I used my car and bike rack) I drove down to Rodalink to get a 2nd opinion…

Basically, the 2nd opinion was the same as the 1st. Cept that these guys could actually order the part in… which could take anything from a week to 3 months. On its own, a braze-on derailleur doesn’t seem hard to find, but I needed a braze-on derailleur for a TRIPLE crankset. Now, THAT is hard to get… By this time, I had almost given up hope and so just agreed to leave my frame (Got confirmation from the Rodalink mechanic who was V experienced in frame from the 90s that my carbon frame’s actually a Trek carbon from ‘95… woohoo…) at the shop and wait for the parts.

So now I’m going to play the waiting game and wait for the part to come in while cycling on my heavy assed Merida bike for now…. Its the *grumble* engine that counts anyway…*grumble grumble*

*New update: I’m gonna call up all the major shops in Singapore to check for the part. Finger’s crossed for the part 4!!! Hopefully I can wrap this one up by then!!

Single Column Cash Book

 You’ve seen him as Lee Tae-ran and Ji Hyun-woo’s younger brother in My Precious Child (KBS). Since then, he has moved on and appeared in an MBC drama entitled Triple.

Song Joong-ki talked about his feelings and what’s in store for him after wrapping up his latest drama.

In Triple, the 24-year-old plays an infatuated boy named Ji Poong-ho who is in love with figure skater Lee Haru (played by Min Hyo-rin). Poong-ho’s adoration for Haru is dubbed “sunflower love” because the sunflower constantly follows the sun.

Song admits that in real life, he doesn’t subscribe to “sunflower love”.

He revealed, “I’m the type of person who has to own things — whether they are objects or people.

“I would want my girlfriend to be with me and I would try to get her heart like Poong-ho did but I think “sunflower love” is a unique story. Poong-ho continues going after Haru for 2 and a half years because he couldn’t stop loving her…I think I’m a bit different from him.”

The actor also revealed that he almost cried when filming for his drama wrapped.

“Triple was a very precious and beautiful one to me. It was my first time doing this kind of mini-series and I learned a lot,” he explained.

“Most of all, it was meaningful because I worked with a director whom I admire. I will miss everything and will remember this forever.”

So what’s next for Song?

“I want to try everything!” he enthused. “Not only various genres of dramas but also musicals, plays and MC-ing entertainment shows. I would do all these things if it helped me improve my acting.”

Song also revealed that he has been going for auditions after Triple wrapped.

“I hope to do better in my future projects. You can expect it.”
